Abstract:
Astrology is no longer regarded as a science by many, because its claims are almost impossible to test empirically in controlled laboratory conditions and it can not meet the scientific need to be reproducible. However, the majority of those who read their `star signs' can identify aspects of their personality in what they read and it is possible that this may influence their attitudes and actions. The literature has neglected astrological signs as a possible predictor of suicide ideation. To see whether astrological birth signs are associated with suicide and the method used, data was collected from the Public Health Department in North Cheshire representing all the Cheshire Coroner's verdicts of suicide, and open verdicts, in all deceased aged 60 and above between 1989 and 2000. The observed occurrence of deaths due to natural causes, and suicide, in relation to birth signs did not differ significantly from what would be expected from chance. However, the distribution of suicide by hanging appeared significantly higher in those with a birth sign of Virgo and lowest in Sagittarius and Scorpio. The distribution of violent and non-violent suicides in relation to star signs showed higher occurences of violent death in persons born in the summer months.

Abstract:
BM 47762 is the rest of a circular tablet, which was divided into 12 sectors by lines from the center to the rim. Each sector was labelled by a zodiacal sign. Our tablet consists in part of the sectors IX, X, XI, and XII, which are concerned with the zodiacal signs of Sagittarius (month IX), Capricorn (month X), Aquarius (month XI), and Pisces (month XII). In lines 2 to 5 of each sector, some four numbers are written, which in pairs can be understood as a date (month, day) or as a position (sign, degree)—just as in the Dodecatemoria and its inverse, the Calendar Texts (Kalendertexte). The combination of number pairs on BM 47762 do not appear in those schemes. However, the difference between the pairs in lines 3, 4, and 5 is always equal to 277, a very special number which is known from the Calendar Texts. Evidently, our number pairs must somehow be connected to those number schemes. This paper investigates and finds a very interesting connection. It shows that all number pairs stand for dates, for which the Dodecatemoria scheme will give the position of the schematic Moon in its four important phases. The second number pairs refer to the months of the section, while the first pairs give the dates of the four important lunar phases three months earlier. The two dates on each line correspond to lunar positions taking place at almost the same position in the zodiac. The zodiacal signs of the lunar phases on days 7, 14, 21, and 28 join to squares which are mostly known from Greek astrology. For example, for month XI, the signs of the Moon have the numbers 2, 5, 8, and 11, i.e., the zodiacal square with 11 as one of the corners. Maybe we here have found the origin of the quadruplicities of the zodiacal signs. Abstract:
The article deals with the peculiarities of rendering texts of astrological discourse in Ukrainian. Astrological discourse – is a verbalized way of thinking, functioning of thoughts that is based on a real astrological model. As a structural element it is based upon acceptance of the material space that correlates with the energy of celestial objects. The present paper concentrates on analyzing how to systemize and generalize information on the definition of astrological discourse in scientific field and to find out the directions of astrological discourse research in the aspect of translation. The paper proposes a new approach to determine the peculiarities of rendering pragmatics in astrological discourse. The objective of this article is to analyze cognitive-pragmatic characteristics of astrological discourse, to identify communicative strategies and tactics in astrological discourse and to consider the features of rendering communicative strategies and tactics in the texts of astrological discourse in Ukrainian. It was revealed that daily horoscopes use certain communicative strategies to manipulate the audience. In this paper we proposed to categorize these strategies using the following classification: 1) Forming emotional state: «to catch a glimpse of its mysteries»; «astrology primes us»; «super-powered ruler Mars»; 2) Pointing to vital events: «protect what is valuable»; «spend time with yourself»; «study the needs of what you are doing»; 3) Emphasis on valuable information: «for the first time since 2016»; «won’t be back in Sagittarius until 2030»; 4) Revealing possible or real results: «today might startle the senses»; «Mercury solidifies plans, help us define our days»; 5) Advice: «pay attention to...»; «take your time to...»; «stay open to...» 6) Affirmation: «I set myself free»; «I make my mental health a priority»; «I am intentional about ...»; «I am worthy of being ...»; Reflection: «I remembered the power of my word»; «I need to know»; «the living is in trying»; 7) Conclusion: «over the past year, I have ...»; «the last year has shown me ...». It was ascertained that in daily horoscopes the author uses universal archetypes to appeal to the readers, such as «The Ruler», «The Scientist», «The Judge». They are interconnected with the horoscope signs and conceptual beliefs regarding each realia. This special feature of astrological discourse gives the opportunity to use a wide range of semantic devices in Ukrainian to render author’s intentions. The results of the analysis showed that cognitive pragmatics characteristics of astrological discourse are rooted to the rational and astronomic dimensions. A high demand on daily horoscopes proves that people tend to rely on astrological horoscopes as they make their mood better, show positive directions and boost confidence.
