Full textThis thesis is linked to the actual research movement on Métis ethnogenesis, which is getting in vogue since few years in the faculties of Social Sciences and Humanities of many universities in Canada and – to a lesser scale – United States. The aim of this research movement is to identify the process by which Métis communities (resulting from the contacts between European settlers and Aboriginal peoples) came into being during the North American history. This thesis uses the conceptual and methodological tools of this research movement and adapts them to a new historical context, that is to say the Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean region during the 16th and the 17th centuries. The choice of this spatio-temporal frame is based on the fact that it has been the scene of regular and prolonged meetings between Europeans settlers and Aboriginal peoples. For generations in that historical context, these two populations have been engaged into a profound process of intermixing (or métissage) at both genealogical and cultural levels. This work exposes what this process was, from its beginning when the first European sailors came on the banks of the Saint-Lawrence up to the time where the inhabitants of the French colony started to establish a fur trade posts network in the forest of the region. It is neither a history of the aboriginal peoples of the Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean region, nor a history of its settlers: it takes as its main object the intermixing process of these two populations and its result within the two first centuries of their encounters. More than just a case study, this thesis analyses the very fundamental mechanisms by which ethnogenesis processes work, and identify some of the contextual factors that induce and inhibit these phenomena. Its ultimate achievement is to suggest researchers tools that are intended to help explaining why, in certain historical contexts, there can be no ethnogenesis process even though there is a lot of métissage between two cultural groups for a long period of time. At the end of this thesis, to understand why an ethnogenesis process doesn’t occur appears as important as to understand why it does.

At the request of the “Réseau du Sport étudiant du Québec”, the “En forme au secondaire” fitness test (B-EFAS) was developed. A total of 1626 high school students in Montreal and Saguenay were tested through a series of physical fitness tests : the 20-metre shuttle run test with 1 minute stage, the RSEQ anaerobic test, the fifteen-metre sprint round trip, the vertical jump, the paced push-ups, the paced sit-ups and the V-test. Multivariate analysis with distinctions of sexual and regional disparities was used to obtain a portrait of fitness. It is corroborated that boys get higher score at muscular tests and that girls perform better in flexibility. Forty-four percent (44%) of participants have obesity-related health risk. Between 1981 and 2014, the young were taller (♀ +1.67 cm, ♂ +2.25 cm), heavier (♀ +5.8 kg, ♂ + 5.6 kg) and their VO2max fell 13% (♀ -5 ml min-1 kg-1, ♂ -7 ml min-1 kg-1). The VO2max regresses between the ages of 12 and 17 among Quebeckers. Preliminary norms were built using LMS methods for all tests. Our research demonstrate that the RSEQ battery is evaluating and monitoring the progress of fitness at the High School level. Our study also shows that the physical condition of young people is likely to be affected by the global obesity epidemic and that significant changes in their lifestyle will be needed in order to reverse the situation.

Full textAt the end of World War II, Quebec city was the subject of a vast modernization program that went through a reorganization of urban space. Willing to align with the new North American sociopolitical context, the city’s public authorities decided to call upon planners Jacques Gréber, Édouard Fiset and Roland Bédard to help aid the various urban problems that had arisen. Employed by the local planning commission, they had to manage, by rational means, the urban questions and proceed to the conception of the town’s first comprehensive plan. In doing so, the municipal administration wanted to materialize their desires of modernization by inscribing them within a technico-scientific discourse about the city and its organization. After eight years of work, Gréber and his collaborators presented the Projet d’aménagement de Québec et de sa région, an 86 pages long document offering a series of solutions and advices concerning the urban structure and its relation to present, past and future. Our thesis focuses on this salient moment in the urban history of Quebec. By confronting the planners’ production with foucaldian theories on knowledge and powers, we tried to understand how the desired modernization of the urban environment induces a particular vision of public space on both spatial and political levels. Not only the solutions proposed by the planners depended on a specific vision of urban planning – mainly functionalist theories and modern architecture – but the insertion of the expert figure in the city’s political organization were indicative of a reconfiguration of power relations within the urban government. Thus, behind the dreamed landscape for the old capital was hiding a particular conception of the polis, which redrew the web of relations between public authorities, technical expertise and the civil society.

Full textThis thesis concerns the process of institutionalizing madness in asylums, during the middle of the XIXth century in Quebec City. More specifically, this study is concerned with the Asile de Beauport, the first permanent asylum in the province of Quebec. This establishment was managed by three generations of owners, from its opening in 1845 until 1893, when it fell under the management of the Soeurs de la Charité de Québec, using the farming-out system. The main focus of this research examines the experiences and interactions between different players involved in the process of institutionalizing madness: owners, medical and non-medical staff, the State, the patient’s family and community. This approach to the history of the Asile de Beauport allows the examination of a reality often different from the legal context, a reality born from the adaptation of the various players to the system whose therapeutic objective was replaced by a capitalist enterprise. This profitfocused management model was manifest at every step of the asylum’s institutionalization, such as admission, internment and release of patients.

Full textThe Economy of Speed: Automobilism and its Stakes in the Rhône region and the Quebec Area (1919-1961) Our thesis analyzes automobilism in the rural West during the twentieth century. It is based on a study crossing the Rhône region in France and Quebec area in Canada. Our documentation relies on archives for the Rhône region and national sources for Quebec area. These are supplemented by periodicals, reviews, statistical sources and iconography. Our demonstration wishes to answer to the question of the adoption of speed and its consequences in rural areas. By crossing territories, it highlights how an object produced by industrial city – the automobile and its variations – changes the rural and agricultural landscape, attitudes and practices of mobility. This work show that mutations about automobilism are much more numerous and complex in the rural than in urban areas. It also highlights the relative speed with which rural people have adopted this mode of transport: rural anti-automobilism is re-evaluated and sociocultural impacts of mechanization are underlined. Finally, it posits the idea that the car speed is part of a logical and coherent system that is revolutionizing the mode of travel, but also and especially the space occupied and attitudes. Full textThe history of the eel fishery has been an activity emblematic of the evolving culture of the Kamouraska region and a source of identity for the region’s fishing population. The snake-like appearance of the eel and its mysterious life underwater made it a fish subject to multiple interpretations in the belief systems of several peoples. From its rise to its decline, the historical geography of the eel fishery is a medium for exploring the larger relationship of the peoples of Kamouraska with their environment. An integral part of the transhumance of First Nations peoples, it was equally an essential part of the fishing and agricultural subsistence activities of the French colonists of the region and became an economically important market activity in the 19th and 20th centuries.. The decline of the eel fishery in the 1970’s provides testimony to the long-term effects of environmental degradation of the St. Lawrence River. Keywords: Eel, Eel fishery, historical geography, Nature and culture, ecosystem management, identity, social and economical development, Kamouraska, Maoris.

Full textThis thesis examines the socioeconomic and political impacts of a massive recreation tourism project on the territory and habitants of Petite-Rivière-Saint-François (PRSF), a rural municipality of 750 people located in the Charlevoix region, 100 km northeast of Quebec City. Since the early 2000s, PRSF has been at the heart of an important real estate development project engendering important investments in the municipality by Le Groupe le Massif, which hopes to make PRSF a world-renowned ski destination. This research is divided in two parts: the first aims to situate this phenomenon in its broader geohistorical context. In doing so, it is possible to see how the material conditions of a society determine the representations of its territory and, by doing so, influence its relations to space. The second part is a case study of PRSF that uses tools derived from geographical sciences to illustrate the different socioeconomic dynamics that underlie massive recreational tourism development in a rural municipality and the problem of “absentee landlordism” and loss of local control that has come to dominate life in contemporary PRSF.

Full textTo this day, Dorset culture continues to be the subject of numerous debates in the field of Arctic prehistory, regarding its exact définition, the methods it used to establish itself, its expansion, and its disappearance from the eastern portion of the Canadian Arctic, as well as its characteristic socioeconomic organization. An understanding of the chaînes opératoires related to their material culture represents a privileged path to access a universe of technical and socioeconomic choices. By following the ethnographical documentation, we consider that the analysis of the skins working process, for the purpose of producing the garments and equipment necessary to survive in an Arctic environment, could provide access to methods to manage the different phases of this technical activity in time and space, in addition to showing the nature of female contributions throughout seasonal cycles of resources availability. This study demonstrates that, by looking at the différences and similarities gathered through a comparison between the management methods of production processes to treat animal skins used by the Inuit and Dorset cultures, it is possible to suggest a relevant model of the socioeconomic organization of the latter, as well as to approach the nature of their underlying social and gender relations. Being subject to a seansonal cyle of availability and access to resources, while experiencing material needs équivalent to those of the Inuit, the Dorset peoples were able to create a particular method for managing their technical activities and their social relationships, consistent with a cultural and social reality that differs from the one experienced by their successors. A combination of use-wear analyses (identification of the use of tools in chert and quartz) and spatial analyses, completed by an analysis of gender relationships, allows the data necessary in this type of study to be generated. The three archaeological sites chosen are located along the southern coastline of the Hudson Strait in Nunavik. The cultural period covered by these sites covers the transitional phase from ancient to récent Paleo-Eskimo (Pita KcFr-5/2800-2600 B.P.), as well as the one knows as the Dorset phase (Tivi KcFr-8A/2600-1000 B.P. and Tayara KbFk-7/2125-1186 B.P.). Keywords: Paleo-Eskimo, Dorset, skin process chaîne opératoire, lithic analysis, use-wear analysis, archaeological experiments, ethno-archaeology, gender analysis, household analysis, seasonal cycle, tools function, microblades.

Full textThis dissertation offers elements of a response to the question of "how to organize church in small rural parishes today. " Three periods in the history of parochial networking in the diocese of Rimouski are first identified and analyzed. In the periods from 1867-1891 and 1928-1950, we find two different dynamics which lead to the foundation of small parishes in the rural milieu: the recognition of a stable community and the support for a colonization effort in the context of economic crisis. The period from 1968-2000 presents, on the other hand, a dynamic of struggle for the survival of small parishes faced with diminishing populations. In each instance, the ideal of Christian society is sought within the framework of parish. Three ecclesiological marks are identified in view of reshaping parishes. These three marks-structured communion, fraternity-solidarity, hope-involvement-reveal much about Christian life in a parochial milieu and are suggestive of a new and motivating pastoral project
