Abstract:

Abstract:
The following paper intends to draw an incomplete map of some possible routes to guide an approach to the poetry written by Saharawis, an ancient Bedouin community who currently lives divided between the Western Sahara’s Liberated Territories, the territories occupied by Morocco and the refugee camps in southwest Argelia. This text seeks to emphasize the priority role that the Saharawi people have given to poetry as part of their daily work, and how it is inseparable from their vital relationship with memory, conceived not as a steady acquis, but as an endless fountain that flows and renews the arteries of life. Hence, the legacy of these nomadic poets is not limited only to their written traces: in the languages of gestures, as well, there is a po-ethic to be discovered, an ethic of patience and lightness to safeguard our future steps.

Abstract:
In October 2016 I made my first visit to the refugee camps of Western Sahara’s Saharawi people near the Algerian town of Tindouf. This was an opportunity to advance my research on the work of an “informal collective” who work with a collection of photographs belonging to Moroccan soldiers, seized by SPLA (Saharawi People’s Liberation Army) over the course of 15 years spent fighting Moroccan forces. In this essay, I conceptualize the relationship between two disparate practices centering around photography—that of the Saharawi’s political organization, the Front Polisario, and the work undertaken by this informal collective. The latter’s work involves exploring the ontological coordinates of these photographs in a dialogical setting. Besides probing the many resonances between the group’s work and the Polisario’s treatment of the photographs of Moroccans in their possession, this essay is also concerned with the relationship between the conflict and its medial representation.

Abstract:
Abstract From its beginning, the Organisation of Solidarity of the Peoples of Africa, Asia, and Latin America (ospaaal) used its print media to campaign on behalf of Palestinian nationalism, articulating the concerns of displaced Palestinians from a perspective of unrecognised and thwarted national liberation movements. This organisation, responsible for carrying out the activities of the Tricontinental group that began meeting in Havana in 1966, identified the issue of Palestinian statelessness as a key feature of ongoing colonialism. From this perspective, ospaaal developed a platform from which to articulate solidarity against ongoing imperialism, one which could be usefully extended to explain and render solidarity with other causes. We argue that ospaaal’s visual and narrative framework, extended to the anti-colonial advocacy first for Dhofar (from the late 1960s to middle of the 1970s) and later for Western Sahara (late 1970s to 1990), presented a powerful, though limited, critique of international governance institutions from the Global South. Tricontinental publications’ reporting and solidarity media, in framing statelessness as an inherent problem of an incomplete process of decolonisation, critiqued the rhetorical strategies employed by imperial powers to maintain colonial relationships through international organisations like the United Nations.

Abstract:
By 1994 Africa had only one major unresolved colonial question. Namibia and Eritrea having acquired their independence in March 1990 and May 1993 respectively, the former Spanish colony of Western Sahara remains controlled by the Kingdom of Morocco (as it has since 1975), despite the expenditure of thousands of human lives, billions of dollars, and strenuous diplomatic efforts to resolve the dispute through the Organisation of African Unity (O.A.U.) and the United Nations. Both Morocco, under the monarchical régime of King Hassan II, and the Frente popular para la Liberación de Saguia el-Hamra y Río de Oro (Polisario Front) composed of Saharawis dedicated to the establishment of an independent Saharan Arab Democratic Republic (S.A.D.R.), have found each other far more resourceful and less willing to compromise than they could possibly have surmised almost two decades ago.

A major number of positive animals was revealed in goats and sheep, with higher prevalence in subjects over 36 moths of age. One positive case was reported also in camels. Following reports of increased mortality in the small ruminant population of the Sahrawi Refugees Camps, between January and May 2010, local veterinary authorities suspected an outbreak of PPR. Between May and October 2010 an outbreak investigation was implemented in the Sahrawi Refugee Camps, with the objective of confirming the circulation of the Peste des Petits Ruminants virus (PPRV). Laboratory results confirmed the presence of PPRV in 33.33% of the samples. Sequence analysis revealed that the virus belonged to Lineage IV and phylogenetic analysis indicated a close relationship (99.3%) with the PPRV isolated during the Moroccan outbreak in 2008.

Abstract:
Refugee studies often focus on the devastating effects forced migration can have on a refugee population, both mentally and physically. This research investigates the case of Saharawis living in refugee camps in south-west Algeria and the social change experienced over 30 years. The method was a case study with qualitative interviews supported with secondary data. The Saharawis went through a period of positive social change, to some a revolution, while living in the refugee camps. The empirical study identifies three theme areas; Education, Women??s rights and Democracy. These circumstances are unlike many other refugee studies, thus providing what may be a unique case of positive social change. The case demonstrates how forced migration of a population may not just be a destructive process, but instead has the potential to reconstruct a society. Theories of social change and unanticipated outcomes are explored. Utilising the theories of Bourdieu and Merton, it is proposed that the Saharawi refugee experience is the unanticipated outcome of forced migration. This thesis explores commonalities and differences between Bourdieu??s study of the Kabyle population, and whether his theory of habitus is applicable. Bourdieu??s theories, heavily criticised for being too structuralist, show their limitations when dealing with positive social change. Bourdieu??s approach can suggest that it is inevitable for refugee populations to spiral into despair. The Saharawi case challenges these presumptions and highlights that neither sociologists nor populations should exclude the possibility of unexpected outcomes. Unanticipated outcomes are an acknowledgement of social change and the fact that at its heart no one can predict the future.

Doctoral thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2018. http://amsdottorato.unibo.it/8474/1/Maltese_Giulia_tesi.pdf.

Abstract:
The goal of this dissertation is to propose a critical study of contemporary Sahrawi poetry in Spanish (from 1972) by elaborating a corpus-based analytical model which insists on the osmosis between the poet’s autobiographical and the collective experiences of the Sahrawi people, the latter being considered as the basis of identitarian consciousness. To achieve this main goal, the following specific objectives have been accomplished: (1) the contextualization of the phenomenon by defining its historical-political, anthropological and cultural dynamics; (2) the definition of the theoretical bases of the corpus-based analytical model; (3) the application of the analytical model to a selection of representative texts from monographs and anthologies. Thus, the present dissertation combines a descriptive conceptual approach with an empirical experimental focus: first, by deepening the historical, anthropological, political, linguistic and cultural dynamics that define the Sahrawi identity, second by developing the corpus-based analytical model. The latter aims to trace the discursive manifestations of the polyphonic nature of the poetic I in its attempt to rewrite a collective biography (multi-biography) that switches between autobiography and autofiction. This is done mainly by integrating the Critical Discourse Analysis with the pragmalinguistic approach and by using some corpus linguistics tools. The complex macro-concept of identity has therefore been implemented in several approaches and disciplines. In the specific case of the Sahrawi people identity entails an even more complex reflection on the stages and spaces of the colonization, the occupation, the Algerian exile and the diaspora. Moreover, within this context, identity also comprehends three different meanings: the national identity, the political identity and the cultural identity. In this sense, Sahrawi's contemporary poetry in Spanish becomes the mouthpiece of the Sahrawi people, claiming their national identity as a bridge between intimate and communitarian aspirations, ultimately providing a tool for both intimate and communitarian self-recognition and resistance.

Abstract:
Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Medicina Veterinária
Between 1970 and 1975, 72 (36♂.36♀) Saharawi dorcas gazelles (Gazella dorcas neglecta) arrived in Finca Experimental la Hoya, Almería, southeast Spain. They were the founding individuals of a captive breeding programme, now managed as an European Endangered species Programme, currently with 236 (104.132) living individuals distributed among 12 institutions. Previous demographic and genetic assessment of this population was published in 2002 (Abáigar, 2002). An updated analysis was commended, ultimately motivated by the recent establishment of in situ reintroductions in Senegal. Besides the inclusion of the last 14 years of studbook data, this is the first thorough study to use the software programmes Population Modelling, ENDOG and SplitsTree4 for this taxon. The census history shows an overall increasing population, consistent with the incorporation of more institutions in the programme, although a tendency towards a stationary population is observed since 2010. Such tendency is corroborated by the current demographic parameters of annual growth rate (1.058), instantaneous rate of change (0.056) and net reproductive rate (1.283). Age-specific life table parameters show higher mortality rate, fecundity rate and reproductive value in males in almost all age-classes in contrast with higher survival rate and life expectancy in females. Sex and age structure of the global living population is close to pyramidal shape, as would occur in demographically stable populations. Plotting of annual gene diversity and mean inbreeding coefficient shows a positive impact of the incorporation of eight wild-caught individuals in the programme in the 90s. Current genetic parameters are the result of proper reproductive management of threatened species, and are in accordance with standardised targets when planning cooperative metapopulation breeding.

Abstract:
The thesis presents ethnographic data and musical analysis (in the form of transcriptions) of Haul music which is the music style performed by Bedouin societies in Trab el Bidan region (Mauritania, Western Sahara, northern Mali, southern Algeria and northern Morocco). It is based on field research undertaken in Algeria in 2004-05 in the refugee camps of Tindouf, Algeria, where Saharaui people (a Bedouin society)live in exile. This research is unique and original as Haul has not, until now, been explored in depth by any scholar. My research on Haul reveals that the changes in Saharaui music in the refugee camps of Tindouf reflect changes in the musical traditions of Bedouin societies as whole; changes that can be traced to the revolution which occurred in Western Sahara in 1975, and changes that are a result of the migrations and life in exile that followed. I argue that these changes occurred due to the transnational experiences undergone by Saharaui people in their forced exile (caused by the Moroccan state) from their homeland in Western Sahara to Algeria. Further, I assert that the invocation of memory in Bedouin musical styles is evidence of past musical practices being retained in contemporary Haul performance, although other musical changes are similarly in progress.

Abstract:

Gimenez, Amoros Luis. "Transnational habitus : Mariem Hassan as the transcultural representation of the relationship between Saharaui music and Nubenegra records." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1017819.

Abstract:
This thesis expands on primary field research conducted for my MMus degree. Undertaken in the Saharaui refugee camps of southern Algeria (2004-2005) that research - based on ethnographic data and the analysis of Saharaui music, known as Haul ¹- focussed on the musical system, the social context of musical performance and the music culture in Saharaui refugee camps. This doctoral research examines Saharaui Haul music as practised in Spain and is particularly focussed on its entry, since 1998, into the global market by way of the World Music label, Nubenegra records. The encounter between Saharaui musicians and Nubenegra records has created a new type of Saharaui Haul which is different to that played in the refugee camps. This phenomenon has emerged as a result of western music producers compelling Saharaui musicians to introduce musical changes so that both parties may be considered as musical agents occupying different positions on a continuum of tradition and change. Nubenegra undertook the commodification of Saharaui music and disseminated it from the camps to the rest of the world. A musical and social analysis of the relationship between Nubenegra and Saharaui musicians living in Spain will form the basis of the research in this thesis. In particular, Mariem Hassan is an example of a musician who had her music disseminated through the relationship with Nubenegra and she is promoted as the music ambassador of the Western Sahara. I collaborated with her as a composer and performer on her last album, El Aaiun egdat (Aaiun in fire), in 2012² and gained first hand insight into the relationship between Mariem and Nubenegra. This thesis reflects on this relationship and my role in facilitating this encounter.
