Abstract:
Abstract This article investigates Beethoven’s connection to the Bavarian Catholic theologian Johann Michael Sailer (1751–1832), the importance of which has been understated or misunderstood in the existing Beethoven literature. Drawing on historical studies of the complex relationship between Catholicism and the German Enlightenment, it provides a detailed and nuanced account of Sailer’s theology, situating it within the fierce debates that took place among German Catholics in this period. The article goes on to examine the contents of three books by Sailer in Beethoven’s possession, and to show how key ideas in these books resonate with features of Beethoven’s Missa solemnis, which he worked on around the time he was exposed to Sailer’s ideas. In conclusion, the article argues that a deeper understanding of Sailer and his possible influence on Beethoven should prompt a reconsideration of long-standing assumptions regarding the composer’s religious outlook, which may have been more sympathetic to Catholicism than has previously been supposed.

Since the phylogenetic analysis of the Herrichella clade (Ochlerini) new genera were described to fit monophyletic groups inferred and considered to be new taxa. The clade I supported by two synapomorphies of the female genitalia, grouped Alitocoris brunneus Sailer together to two new species. Alloeogyna gen. nov. is described here for this clade including the two new species Alloeogyna ampla sp. nov. and Alloeogyna poecila sp. nov. and a new combination is proposed for Alloeogyna brunnea comb. nov.. Also, Alitocoris maculosus Sailer recovered within the clade E in the Herrichella clade is here redescribed in the monotypic Sailerus gen. nov. resulting in the new combination Sailerus maculosus comb. nov..

Abstract:
Abstract Motivation Single-cell sequencing assay for transposase-accessible chromatin (scATAC-seq) provides new opportunities to dissect epigenomic heterogeneity and elucidate transcriptional regulatory mechanisms. However, computational modeling of scATAC-seq data is challenging due to its high dimension, extreme sparsity, complex dependencies and high sensitivity to confounding factors from various sources. Results Here, we propose a new deep generative model framework, named SAILER, for analyzing scATAC-seq data. SAILER aims to learn a low-dimensional nonlinear latent representation of each cell that defines its intrinsic chromatin state, invariant to extrinsic confounding factors like read depth and batch effects. SAILER adopts the conventional encoder-decoder framework to learn the latent representation but imposes additional constraints to ensure the independence of the learned representations from the confounding factors. Experimental results on both simulated and real scATAC-seq datasets demonstrate that SAILER learns better and biologically more meaningful representations of cells than other methods. Its noise-free cell embeddings bring in significant benefits in downstream analyses: clustering and imputation based on SAILER result in 6.9% and 18.5% improvements over existing methods, respectively. Moreover, because no matrix factorization is involved, SAILER can easily scale to process millions of cells. We implemented SAILER into a software package, freely available to all for large-scale scATAC-seq data analysis. Availability and implementation The software is publicly available at https://github.com/uci-cbcl/SAILER. Supplementary information Supplementary data are available at Bioinformatics online.

Abstract:
Relative abundance of stink bugs was determined from 01 May 1989 to 30 September 1992 in 80 commercial rice fields in Colombia and in 12 selected rice-producing countries of Latin America. Fifteen stink bug species from nine genera were found in Colombia. The species are Oebalus ornatus (Sailer), Mormidea maculata Dallas, Tribraca obscurata Bergroth, M. pictiventris Stål, O. pugnax torridus (Sailer), Proxys punctulatus (Palisot de Beauvois), O. insularis (Stål), T. limbativentris Stål, and O. ypsilongriseus (De Greer). In Valle del Cauca Department in southwestern Colombia, the most abundant species was O. ornatus representing 94.1% of the stink bugs collected. Seven species comprised the remaining 5.9%. Oebalus ornatus and O. ypsilongriseus were recovered from seven Latin America countries and had the widest geographical range of the stink bugs species collected during the study.

Abstract:
Several nomenclatural problems were found while studying the types of Ochlerini in the Natural History Museum, London. These problems are addressed and corrected: Hemingius Distant, 1899 syn. nov. is removed from the synonymy with Moncus Stål, 1867, and considered a new junior synonym of Ochlerus Spinola, 1837; Ochlerus scaber Walker, 1867 is removed from the synonymy with Ochlerus obscurus Dallas, 1851, and it is proposed as a senior synonym of Ochlerus cotylophorus Breddin, 1910 syn. nov. Herrichella Distant, 1911 is a senior synonym of Alitocoris Sailer, 1950 syn. nov., with the resulting new combinations: Herrichella grandis (Garbelotto & Campos, 2013) comb. nov., Herrichella lateralis (Garbelotto & Campos, 2013) comb. nov., Herrichella ornata (Garbelotto & Campos, 2013) comb. nov., and Herrichella schraderi (Sailer, 1950) comb. nov. A key for the species of Herrichella is also given. Eritrachys antennata (Distant, 1911) comb. nov. is a senior synonym of Eritrachys bituberculata Ruckes, 1959 syn. nov. Phereclus punctatus (Dallas, 1851) is transferred to the genus Lincus Stål, 1867 as Lincus punctatus (Dallas, 1851) comb. nov.

Abstract:
The male genitalia, including the pygophore, parameres, and inflated aedeagus, and the female terminalia, are compared between Mecidea major Sailer and M. minor Ruckes (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae). These structures are markedly different between these species, particularly the inflated aedeagus. In M. major, the penial lobes tof the aedeagus diverge in the basal 1/3, converge distally, with each lobe subquadrate apically. In M. minor, the penial lobes diverge midway to the apex, weakly converge distally, with each lobe rounded apically. We suggest the same 3 structures should be examined in the remaining 15 species of Mecidea to determine if the taxonomic status of each of these species is supported by the results.

The life history of the stink bug Mecideamajor Sailer was studied in the southern half of New Mexico primarily from January 2005 through December 2007, and the nymphal instars were described. This species was active throughout the year as adults and nymphs, including the winter months. It occurred on various species of grasses during this time but primarily on Lehmann lovegrass, Eragrostislehmanniana Nees; grama grasses, Bouteloua spp.; and tobosagrass, Pleuraphismutica Buckley. The times of occurrence and abundance of the eggs, nymphs, and adults suggest this species is bivoltine with the possibility of a third generation. Instars can be distinguished by several morphological features including body size and presence and relative development of wing pads.

Abstract:
In controlled-environment chambers, the scentless plant bug Niesthrea louisianica Sailer damaged reproductive structures of velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medik. # ABUTH) and reduced viable seed production by 98 to 99%, in comparison with insect-free control plants. The insect completed its life cycle on velvetleaf in two temperature regimes simulating warm growing-season conditions in Mississippi (29/23 C day/night) and Minnesota (24/18 C). Feeding by N. louisianica delayed flowering, capsule development, and capsule and seed maturation in biotypes of velvetleaf from Mississippi and Minnesota, in both temperature regimes. Numbers and weights of capsules and seed were lower in the infested plants. Augmentation of natural populations of N. louisianica to increase population density early in the growing season might be effective in reducing velvetleaf seed production.

Abstract:
The original version of the Monkey and Coconuts Problem describes a hypothetical situation where five sailors and a monkey are trapped on an island and plan on equally sharing coconuts. The number of coconuts turns out to be one more than a multiple of 5. The first sailor tosses one coconut to the monkey, and then takes his equal share out of the pile. Each subsequent sailor finds the number of remaining coconuts to be one more than a multiple of 5, and repeats this process one at a time. After the last sailor has tossed one coconut to the monkey, he too takes his share. The number of coconuts that remain at this stage is a multiple of 5, and is shared equally by the five sailors. In a variation of the original problem, the number of coconuts that remain after the fifth sailor has had his share is again one more than a multiple of 5. Therefore, one coconut is again tossed to the monkey before the remaining pile can be equally distributed among the five sailors. The problem is to determine the least number of coconuts, and the final share for each sailor in each version. We find explicit solutions for both the original version and the variation in the general case of n sailors in which at each stage r coconuts are tossed to the monkey. Even more generally, we also investigate the two versions when the n sailors leave r_1,\ldots,r_n coconuts to the monkey.

Discocephalini e Ochlerini compartilham três sinapomorfias: primeiro segmento do rostro longo, alcançando o prosterno; metasterno carenado longitudinalmente; e superfície dorsal do segmento X do macho membranosa no terço basal.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction Exposure to light at appropriate times can improve alertness and mood; however, light can also interfere with sleep if exposure occurs before bedtime. Therefore, light management is important for sailor well-being and operational performance. One approach to administer light in field settings is to use personal wearable devices. This pilot study assessed the challenges in using the blue-light blocking goggles (BLBG) and light emitting goggles (LEG) for crewmembers of a US Navy ship while underway. Methods Longitudinal (~2 weeks) assessment of sailors (N=18) during deployment. Sailors completed a questionnaire asking whether they used the devices, reasons (if any) they may have had for not using the devices, what they liked/did not like about the devices, and whether wearing the devices made a difference in terms of fatigue, alertness, ability to fall asleep, and reported sleep quality. Results Sailors reported that the LEGs seemed to increase alertness (n=8) and helped wake up faster (n=5), but the devices were bulky/heavy (n=9), too bright (n=4), and made it difficult to see in dim light (n=2). The reported reasons for not using the devices include: the devices were heavy/uncomfortable (n=5), they caused eye strain (n=4), and the LEGs interfered with sailor ability to see while on watch (n=3). Also, wearing the LEGs made sailors feel less tired (71%) and more alert (59%). Sailors reported that the BLBGs kept them drowsy before bed (n=3) and reduced eye strain (n=5). Sailors complained, however, that BLBGs were bulky/inconvenient (n=3). When not wearing the BLBGs, it was because the devices were easy to forget (n=2), sailors had to work after their shift (n=2), and other reasons (n=3). Wearing the BLBGs during watch made falling asleep easier (47%) and improved sleep quality (47%). Conclusion This study provided valuable insight regarding the use of personal wearable light management devices in field settings. Even though not conclusive, our results are promising. We will continue assessing the utility of such devices with a goal of improving sailor well-being and operational performance. Abstract:
This article explores the representation of British sailortown and merchant sailors onshore in the context of their representation in Victorian writing and contemporary journalism. It proposes that sailortown functioned as an urban setting which offered the traveling or returning sailor an important sense of homeliness—a homeliness that was paradoxically based on the promotion of a collective and worldly belonging. This sense of “worldliness” was articulated through aspects of ornamental material culture ranging from sailortown's visual display of nautical and transnational symbols, to the interior arrangements of places of hospitality such as Sailors’ Homes, to sailors’ own forms of portable property. By thinking more closely about the relationship between the domestic and the global in the context of maritime culture, the article proposes that the ornamental features of the seafarer's life, in all its diverse manifestations, serves to reveal the paradoxes and rich ambivalences that underscore the situation of the nineteenth-century sailor onshore.

Abstract:
The paper by Saller and Shaw in JRS 1984 calls for some comment on its treatment of epigraphic evidence, and especially on the question of what we can expect inscriptions to tell us about the people of a given area.A first point to make in relation to their argument is that the poorer classes throughout the empire could not in any case afford stone inscriptions. If, then, the extended family is (as could be argued) an adaptation of the nuclear family induced by poverty, rather than its biological or cultural predecessor, evidence for it will naturally tend to be absent from the epigraphic record, even if it is in fact quite common at the lowest levels of society. But my present purpose is to consider a different aspect of the use of inscriptions—the question of habit, a subject recently raised by Ramsay MacMullen. After examining the relevance of this matter to the claim by Sailer and Shaw that there was little or no local recruitment to the Roman army in Britain, it will be argued that the epigraphic evidence cannot be used to support this view.

Abstract:
During the impressment crisis of the 1790s and 1810s, sailors drove American commerce and shaped ideas of national sovereignty. ‘American Tars’ captured the imagination of the nation. Newspaper articles lauded their perceived independence and emphasized their key role in the nation’s economy. However, though national discourse presented sailors as American citizens, sailors themselves challenged the confines of citizenship, either adopting or rejecting the designation as necessary. Sailors’ use of protection papers – documents created by the U.S. government to claim sailors as American citizens – complicated the national narrative of the American sailor. This article examines how this diverging rhetoric played out in New York City, a port that was home to a large population of sailors and other transient labourers. Through their use of protection papers and through street action, sailors created solidarities that were not solely national, but instead looked towards a broader maritime world.

Abstract:
We assessed the utility of the 3-section, fixed, 4hrs-on/8hrs-off watchstanding schedule on a ship of the Swedish Royal Navy (HSwMS ORIOΝ). Data from the ORIOΝ (n=12 sailors) were compared with data from three USN vessels (n=22). Daily sleep duration, number of sleep episodes/day, and daily work duration were equivalent in the two samples. Compared to their USN peers, however, sailors on the ORION were more alert, reported better sleep quality, less severe insomnia symptoms, and better mood. Also, sailors on the ORION were faster and made fewer errors on the psychomotor vigilance task (PVT). Analysis of daily activities suggests that Swedish sailors may have felt and performed better because sailors working night shifts were allowed to wake up later. Our findings suggest the sailor well-being when standing watch on the fixed 4/8 can be improved when sailors are allowed flexible wake up times in the morning after a night shift.

Abstract:
China has the largest population of sailors in the world, but little is known of their social participation. This study examined Chinese merchant sailors’ social participation using a nationwide survey. Across 12 Chinese provinces, 7,296 merchant sailors completed the questionnaire on sailor' willingness to engage in and status of social participation. The results showed that most Chinese merchant sailors were willing to participate in social affairs, but few of them reported having joined relevant social organizations, over half of sailors reported never having participated in public affairs, and half of them chose to ignore when they faced with an obvious mistake in shipping-related information in the media. Most of sailors reported unknowing the role of the labor union related to Chinese seafarers and NGO related to navigation well, and their evaluation of these organizations were mostly negative. Chinese merchant sailors reported higher expectations of services in terms of protection of rights, providing information and technology, and providing employment opportunity. We conclude that Chinese merchant sailors have willingness to social participation although the reality is not positive and discuss implications for improving the social participation of Chinese merchant sailors.

Abstract:
In hisMemoirs of anUnfortunate Son of Thespis(1818), the actor Edward Cape Everard recalled a performance of Sheridan'sSchool for Scandalthat was interrupted in its third act by a rowdy bunch of sailors. At the sight of Charles Surface drinking, the sailors allegedly left the auditorium, entered the stage, and accosted the actor playing Charles, “exclaiming ‘My eyes, you're a hearty fellow! Come, my tight one, hand us a glass’” (qtd. in Russell 104). As apocryphal as the encounter seems, it is not the only account of mariners rushing the early-nineteenth century stage to join in with the drama. In her analysis of these anecdotes Gillian Russell comments that though they may have been intended to depict the sailor “as naïve and unsophisticated, unable to make the distinction between fiction and reality. . . it is not surprising that the sailor should have disregarded the rules of mimesis and the distinction between stage and auditorium” (104), for the sailor's life lent itself to, and was structured by, theatricality. Service in “the theatres of war,” or more generally in the “wooden world” of the ship, demanded strict performance of custom and ritual in the forging of social identities and relations, not least of all in the ritualistic initiation ceremonies and corporal punishments that were enacted in front of the amassed audience of the crew (Russell 139–57; see Dening). At sea and in dock sailors entertained themselves with amateur theatricals. On shore, they were keen theatre-goers, and in auditoriums and elsewhere they played up to the characteristics of the sailor in the brazen assertion of an identity that was celebrated in stories, songs, and plays, but frequently also belittled, bemoaned, and victimized, the latter particularly while the press gangs were active.

Abstract:
When discussing the current state of art with regard to the use of new technologies in foreign and second language learning one thing is blinking sharply: Simulation Games. Simulator games have prepared a great pedagogical context for young sailors and mariners. The importance of creating pedegugical context for sailors and mariners to learn English as a second or foreign language is the essence of this study. Simulation games show potential not just for engaging and entertaining users, but also in promoting language learning. In this research we survey the effect of simulation Games on sailor and mariners’ English vocabulary and pronunciation learning of Khoramshahr Navy University. The results clearly showed that these kinds of games have a significant impact of learners, especially when they learn English as ESP like the sailors and mariners.

Abstract:
Carpathia was a vessel owned by the British Cunard Line which went down in history as the rescuer of the castaways from the Titanic, a passenger ship that famously sank in the early morning of 15 April 1912 in the North Atlantic Ocean. Since 1903 the Carpathia had sailed on the transatlantic line between Rijeka and New York and was mostly used for the transportation of emigrants, employing many Croatian sailors, especially from Istria and the Kvarner. In this paper I discuss the names and fate of the unknown Croatian sailors from Labin area who participated in the rescue of Titanic passengers in April 1912 drawing on eyewitness accounts, their written records, and the available literature. By analysing the British Cunard Line official list from 1912 I discovered that out of the 240 crewmembers, 83 sailors came from Istria and the Kvarner. This well-known list is now expanded with 17 names of sailors from the Labin area. Fieldwork also helped find the families of their descendants. These new mariners were located by checking the surname frequency in Labin’s environs. Most came from Sveta Nedelja, Kršan and Labin. By analysing the list I conclude that they worked as waiters, stokers and greasers with a monthly salary from 76 to 127 Austro-Hungarian crowns. They were proficient in foreign languages and often served as interpreters. For some, that ship was a ticket to a better life. I was also able to determine that 20 mariners from Istria and the Kvarner who sailed on the Carpathia in 1912 defected from the ship and stayed in New York.

Abstract:
Among the private shipyards, of great importance was the Vavchuga shipyard of the Bazhenins who were merchants of the Gostinaya Sotnya (Guest Hundred – a privileged corporation of Russian merchants). The shipyard was situated opposite the city of Kholmogory. In the course of the 18th century, this enterprise launched to water about 120 ships of different ‘new-mannered’ types which sailed in the basin of the White and Barents seas and the Arctic Ocean. In addition, a number of the sailers were sold to West-European merchants. This paper is devoted to studies of the activities of the Bazhenins – merchants of the Gostinaya Sotnya and the first shipbuilders.
