Full textBuilding on the literature on class and gender in community organising, read through the conceptual lens of "translocational positionality" (Anthias, 2002a), I tell a story of the journeys of a group of ten women activists through four decades of neighbourhood organising. I show that although all the women were first involved in citizens' committees around practical needs such as housing, welfare, urban renewal and education, most of them, stimulated by feminist agitators in their midst, came to new awareness about gender inequalities, to new and deepening analyses, and to individual and collective actions around strategic gender needs. Part and parcel of this spiral of change (Nadeau, 1996) were the tensions that emerged with their families, friends and neighbours, and even with the agitators themselves. Out of these tensions came transformations at the macro level---community, public opinion and government, at the meso level---organisational structures and cultures, and at the micro level---family and selves.
Next I do a metanarrative on the methodology that underlies the project upon which my thesis is based, one that borrows from feminist community organising practice (Gutierrez & Lewis, 1994) to deal with the many ethical dilemmas inherent to feminist life history methodology (Geiger, 1990). In line with the notion of "translocational imaginings in dialogue", the project was conceptualised to pre-figure power-with (Starhawk, 1987) in order to construct narratives of belonging that break with processes of differentiation and stratification. The project is about doing community history with the people who make that history. Because of this, when tensions emerged around power relations, instead of paralysis, individual, interpersonal and collective transformations emerged.
Through this work, I am not only releasing new voices into the collective narrative, but I am also contributing to debates on life history methodology. And, my thesis, and the other historical products that will emerge from this project, will enable organisers and activists to learn from the past, and will, hopefully, entice younger people to get involved in community activism.

Full textThis dissertation documents the environmental history of Québec City, preceding and after the first European establishments in New France. Archaeological excavations at the Intendant Palace’s site, in Lower Town, has revealed an undisturbed sedimentary sequence and a section of a wooden palisade. This research is based on environmental and historical analyses and includes three sections. The first chapter describes a paleoecological reconstruction at two sites (Intendant’s Palace: PDI and Chateauguay: CHAT) located on the lower course of the Saint-Charles River, and dating as far back as the mid-Holocene up to the beginning of the European settlement of Quebec City. Geomorphological and macrofossil data along with a chronological framework established by using radiocarbon dating, suggest that the former river floodplain was influenced by two marine transgressions (Laurentian and Mitis). Macrofossil assemblages at the two sites indicate that the late-Holocene vegetation consisted of a mosaic of plant communities largely influenced by the local topography and proximity to the river bank. In the second chapter, we document the ecological and historical contexts of palisade construction at PDI. White cedar (Thuja occidentalis L.) posts were used to erect this defensive structure, a species which was probably common in the site’s vicinity. Based on tree-ring data from archeological wood, we conclud that the palisade was quickly assembled in 1690 and 1691, for protection against enemy attacks. A long regional tree-ring chronology for white cedar, called the Saint-Laurent chronology (1489-2001), was constructed from the posts analysed. In the third chapter, we synthesize historical data in order to identify the environmental perceptions of the first european occupants of the Quebec City region and, to a broader scale, of New France. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Europeans experienced their new environment often through contacts with indigenous populations. Human settlement was possible through human adaptation to this new territory with the aim of exploiting its resources. Discovery of New France reflects the learned society’s passion for sciences and a sensitivity to nature.

Full textThe changes of Lac Saint-Charles toward eutrophication have been demonstrated. Septic systems are suspected to contribute to its enrichment in nutrients. Literature reveals that aged septic systems can lead to groundwater contamination, including release of phosphorus which is responsible for lacustrine eutrophication. This study presents a conceptual model of contamination from septic systems as described in the literature and a general description of the hydrogeology of lac Saint-Charles’ watershed. Column tests were carried out on three sediment samples from the study area. Results suggest an eventual exhaustion of retention sites and the release of important concentrations of phosphorus following the introduction of pure water. Presence of an oxidizing zone will increase the retention and diminish the reversibility of the phosphorus attenuation mechanism. Aged septic systems most probably contribute to lac Saint-Charles eutrophication, more importantly when their use or design do not favour effluent oxidation.

Full textThe occurrence of harmful blooms of cyanobacteria in freshwater ecosystems is subject to growing public as well as scientific concern. An improved understanding of the factors controlling the proliferation of bloom-forming taxa is an essential requirement for the adequate prediction and management of this water quality problem. The overall objective of this thesis was to understand the cyanobacterial community dynamics of a north-temperate reservoir. The Lake St. Charles reservoir is a major source of drinking water for Quebec City, Canada, and cyanobacterial blooms have appeared episodically in the lake since autumn 2006. Physical, chemical and biological variables were measured over 5 consecutive summers (2007-2011). This confirmed the mesotrophic status of the lake, and underscored the large interannual variation in limnological conditions that provided intermittently favorable conditions for cyanobacterial growth and dominance. There were pronounced variations in cyanobacterial community biomass and structure among the 5 years, including in the dominant species (Microcystis aeruginosa, Anabaena flos-aquae and Aphanocapsa/ Aphanothece sp.). In addition, large differences in community biomass and composition were observed spatially, with significantly higher cyanobacterial concentrations in the north relative to south. These results indicated that there were contrasting environmental controls (phosphorus, temperature, stability of the stratification) acting on the different taxa of cyanobacteria. This large spatial and temporal variability also reflects the dynamic nature of high through-flow reservoirs such as Lake St. Charles. In situ sediment mapping implied that benthic resting cells, if present, were mostly below detection at all sites. This low potential to inoculate the water column from sediments contrasts with many lakes affected by cyanobacteria blooms and indicates the potential for a rapid response to nutrient loading control in the Lake St. Charles watershed. This research has highlighted the markedly dynamic nature of freshwater reservoirs, their potential sensitivity to eutrophication despite a short hydraulic residence time, and the need for continuous monitoring in order to detect the appearance of bloom-forming cyanobacteria.

Full textThis proposal is inserted in the research line \"History, Theory and Teaching of Comparative Biology\" and will work with Aesthetics seeking to verify the possible contributions of this theoretical reference for the study of the environment in Biology, particularly in field classes focused on Higher Education in Biology Graduation. The Aesthetics, described by Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914), is not limited to a science of the beautiful. Aesthetics has a more comprehensive character and resides in the essence of any object apprehended in our experience that arouses our attention, be it considered beautiful or not by the conventions. It it something that we consider \"admirable\". We found in the ideas of Aldo Leopold (1887-1948), that deals with an Aesthetics focused on the conservation of living beings, a dialogue with Peirce\'s Theory. Leopold (1949) proposes five categories of Conservation Aesthetics: trophy, isolation, change of scene, perception and husbandry. Based on these categories it was proposed a Didactic Sequence having the trail made by the naturalist Auguste de Saint- Hilaire (1779-1853) in Serra da Canastra as a background. We chose to adopt an interdisciplinary approach, and while the students revisit the points visited by Saint- Hilaire, field classes are developed with the aim of investigating the environment as the naturalist himself did

Full textOur research entited : the experience of the desert and of islam according to rene caille, charles de foucauld, ernest psichari and saint-exupery, is above all a comparative study attempting to qhow the original and specific character at the time of the afore mentioned experience, relative to each author. Written in the general context of firstly penetration followed by pacification of the morrocan, mauritanian and algerian sahara from 1860 to 1934, this experience offers a triple aspect. It is caracterised first of all by its scientific aspect : discovery of land, of bedouin populations, of their way of life, their habits and beliefs by rene caille, from 1824 to 1828, in senegal, mali, touat and morocco, and by charles de foucauld from 1883 to 1884 in the south of morocco. It is also caracterised by its military aspect: ernest psichari and charles de foucauld were military officers having participated in the french penetration of the sahara. Il is singularised above all by its spiritual aspect dimension: less so with saint-exupery, this spiritual dimension of the desert is felt most strongly in psichari and charles de foucauld, after having been moved by the spirituality of the maures and by their simplicity. Foucauld remains the one who has felt this experience along the lines of the purest biblical tradition

Full textAs early as the reign of St. Louis, criminal justice represents a major part of the work of the Court of the King. Indeed, from the middle of the thirteenth century, while a true “State of law” is being developed, especially through its daily activities, the number of criminal cases risen before it increases steadily. Their settlement becomes soon an area where a specific judicial policy is adopted, of which it is necessary to determine the objectives, the means and the outcome. The judicial decisions taken by what is becoming the “Parliament”, tend to fall in line with the ideas of that time about the duties of the monarchy concerning the punishment of offenses and the maintaining of peace, while revealing that the judges are confronted on a regular basis to the difficulties posed by the composite character of the judiciary, and the entanglement of customs, privileges and personal laws. Applying justice consistently with the ideals of the monarchy makes it a necessity and a prerequisit to set a judicial and legal framework, respectful for acquired rights, but also binding for criminal judges of the kingdom. The sovereign court forces them to respect a number of principles, partly inherited from those it itself defines, in its own developing procedure, as the fundamentals of the criminal trial. The way to solve the disorder caused by the criminal act becomes essential: after defining the elements necessary for the attribution of a punishable offense, the court applies and enforces penalties that are always meticulously “arbitrated” accordingly to the damage and to the guilt. Thus, the prosecution of crimes, the settlement between judges in criminal matters, or between the judges and private persons are all privileged areas for the defense of “public good”: through those, the court makes sure that “crimes do not go unpunished”, even if room is always left for mercy, and will be dealt with through law, that is through a royal criminal law in accordance with “what justice recommends”

This opinion seems past beyond and rather acceptable for the honour of this seventeenth century "honnete homme" who has a share in the litterary history as one of the most pragmatical philosophers, a precurseur of the philosophy of the "siecle des lumieres". Whe shall so devote, on synthesizing his philosophical ideas liking them to his mundane and social behaviour. Graf, Tobias. "Physically-based assessment of intrinsic groundwater resource vulnerability." Doctoral thesis, Université Laval, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11794/26110.
Full textApproaches that rely on process-based models to assess groundwater vulnerability, as opposed to empirical relationships, have recently gained more attention as they have the potential to provide a general framework for all types of (re)source and stress relations. A comprehensive and sustainable management system is needed, based on integrated surface and groundwater models, for effective surface and groundwater protection on a scientific defensible basis. Using a process-based model, an approach to assess intrinsic groundwater vulnerability is proposed and demonstrated for the Saint-Charles River catchment, Québec. A fully integrated 2D surface and 3D groundwater flow model is implemented to simulate quasi steady-state flow in the catchment. Groundwater transit times, which represent an intrinsic system characteristic, are simulated with the flow model. They are then combined with future DPSIR (Driving forces - Pressures - State - Impact - Responses) vulnerability scenarios to assess the system sensitivity. Climate change (decreasing precipitation) and land use change (urbanization) scenarios are simulated. Sensitivity coefficients are calculated for multiple state variables and form the basis for the system vulnerability prediction, with system threshold values of well-being. The scenarios are then compared with a MCDA (Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis) framework, which provides a common evaluation basis, accounting for quantitative (e.g. highly vulnerable catchment percentage) and non-quantitative (scenario relevance and probability) criteria. The MCDA ranks vulnerability and response investigation for the urbanization scenario with highest priority. When combined, the physical and generic framework-based vulnerability approaches represent a powerful tool for analyzing human- environmental interactions and impacts. An integrated surface and groundwater consideration is essential because the vulnerability is a function of the nature and origin of pressure (i.e. scenario specific) and the state variable chosen. Most system changes and impacts can be measured, analyzed and validated within a calibrated model for (quasi) steady-state conditions. The reliability of predicted system vulnerabilities is mainly subject to conceptual and parameter uncertainties and can suffer from the non-unique model calibration issues. Future work should focus on improving the combined approach by providing a clear guidance for the vulnerability evaluation with a threshold rating system which classifies the system damage state in space and time.

Full textThe main part (57%) of Quebec City drinking water comes from the Saint-Charles River watershed. Most of this water is pumped directly from the river but a significant volume of groundwater is also supplied from municipal and private wells in bedrock and granular aquifers. The anticipated climate change and the probable urban area development of Quebec City could have an important impact on these water resources. To assess and quantify the impact of climate change and urban development on water resources of the Saint-Charles River watershed, a 3D numerical model was developed. This numerical model simulates surface water and groundwater flow dynamics for the catchment, using the physically-based, fully integrated, variably-saturated 3-D surface-subsurface simulator HydroGeoSphere (HGS). The first step of the methodology was to build and calibrate the model under current climate conditions (1971-2000). The second step was to identify climate projections from general circulation models (GCMs) with different emission scenarios and to downscale their output (with the “delta change” method) to the catchment scale, as well as to propose urbanisation scenarios. Using the calibrated model as a starting point, the output of the GCMs and urbanisation scenarios were then used as boundary conditions in the numerical model for predictive simulations. Results show that, compared to current conditions, the amount of water (snowmelt water and rainfall) could be about 4 to 7 times greater during warmer winters, according to different emission scenarios, and evapotranspiration could increase by about 15 % to 25 % during warmer summers. These changes could increase winter stream flows by a factor of 2 to 3, and lead to earlier occurrence of snowmelt floods during springs, (by 10 to 30 days), and a reduction of 10 % to 25 % of summer stream flows. In winter, hydraulic heads would dramatically increase, by more than 15 m, mainly in the high-elevation areas and, in summer, hydraulic heads would decrease in the high-elevation areas as well as in the low-elevation areas for the granular aquifers. The simulated effects of urban development on hydraulic heads and stream flows are lower than those induced by climate change. The main effect of planned urban development is an increase (max +0.6 m3/s) of monthly mean stream flow during winter.

Full textAs soon as the day after the Saint-Barthélemy, everyone, according to his faith and political beliefs suggested an interpretation, and magnified the legend. In each epoch, the issue was reopened, giving rise to new controversies. The writers of the nineteenth century were primarily interested in the sixteenth century and the Saint-Barthélemy because the country was actually facing bloody confrontations again. Indeed, these two centuries are famous for great political turmoil, wars, threats from abroad and religions polemics. The authors interpreted the episodes and situations of this period by drawing parallels to political and social contemporary concerns. This dissertation shows that this massacre, perpetrated for religions and political reasons, was treated in different ways by miscellaneous authors in various eras

Full textThis doctoral thesis is based on a biography of Wenceslas of Bohemia, duke of Luxembourg and of Brabant, concieved from the point of view of the familial and “international” relations between France and the Holy Roman Empire. It describes the role of the duke in several great political projects in the 2nd half of the 14th century. The thesis also deals with the literary patronage of the duke, in particular with his relation to Jean Froissart. On the one hand, the Froissart’s Chroniques are one of the sources of this Wenceslas’s biography, on the other hand, the thesis finds an affinity between the duke’s life and the particular poetic work by Froissart, namely the romance Meliador and the “dit” La Prison Amoureuse owing to the Wenceslas’s patronnage. It also pictures the cultural milieu of the court of Luxembourg-Brabant in relation to the other courts of the Netherlands as well as to the emperor’s and to the the French king’s courts

Full textThis thesis is about the part played by the Holy Spirit in the life and work of Little sister Magdeleine de Jésus, Magdeleine Hutin (1898 – 1989). Following the path marked out by Charles de Foucauld, she founded in 1939 a congregation of contemplatives living as semi- nomads among the poor of the Sahara, the Fraternity of the Little sisters of Jesus. But in spite of herself she left Africa in 1946, remembering that the apostles had been dispersed and wishing to see her little sisters everywhere, “scattering like sparks of love”. Seeking out the poorest and the most abandoned people throughout the world, she travelled all over the planet leaving her Little sisters among distant tribes but also in factories, circuses, shantytowns and even behind the Iron Curtain where she spent months travelling in her camping–car every summer in over 30 years till she died, aged 91

Full textModern Milan is marked with the seal of Carlo Borromeo, archbishop from 1564 to 1584. Though his canonization in 1610 establishes him as a model for the entire Christian world, Carlo Borromeo defines his historical role mainly within the boundaries of Lombardy, where he secures an unprecedented control over the written production. Whereas previous studies have focused on the social discipline enforced by the Tridentine bishops, this thesis draws the attention on the Borromean governance of the written production, from Carlo’s to his cousin Federico’s archbishopric (1595-1631). Its scope is not limited to the members of the archbishop’s family: the remarkable careers of individuals writing for the archbishop, members of his « workshop », are thoroughly studied. The examined sources encompass hagiographic, learned, as well as administrative and legal texts. Through an analysis of these various kinds of writings and of the constraints weighing on whoever served the archbishop with a pen, this thesis links two usually separated historical topics: the elaboration of a model of bishop and the specific practices imposed by a Modern bishop in the written production. We examine successively the forming of the archbishop’s workshop just after the Council of Trent, the local elaboration of Carlo Borromeo’s authority in the early 17th c. and finally Federico Borromeo’s dissociation from the model of the workshop through the setting up of a college of learned men endowed with an erudite library, the Ambrosiana (1609). The description of the mechanisms, shapes and media of the texts written for the archbishop of Milan sheds light on a conception of power in Modern Times

Full textThe thesis aims to explain why the Guadeloupe population renounces its traditional taste of local food by focusing on imported food in the colony. We tried to anthropologically observe Guadeloupean food for daily use to identify what reports favorably condition in contrast to the taste of Western food. The period that concerns us is the colonial period and the resistance of the last chocolate in Guadeloupe (1920- 1951) which presents itself as a driving force during a period of uncertainty and economic inequality. It is with this thesis to discover the distinctive characteristics of Guadeloupe, between the consumption of local industrial chocolate. Faced with these changes that determine food uses of a story, a place, and a way of life, we ask ourselves the question: Is it in the customs of Guadeloupe resources a food that involves unequal to the preference of taste an imported product? We note and show that through the behavior of Guadeloupe despite the highly nutritious local resources such as cocoa, indifference taste -country products has continued to grow to the point of view of the colonizer products prevail as economic stranglehold is general

Full textBorn in marseilles in 1689, charles levens was, in turn, choirmaster at st-pierre cathedral in vannes and at st-etienne in toulouse before he was established as a talented composer and theoretician in bordeaux a witness of the first topographic and architectural alterations which turned bordeaux into a classical city, levens occupied the post of music master at st-andre cathedral from 1738 until his death in 1764. The renown he enjoyed proves the importance of artistic life in the provinces in the days of the undisputed rule of versailles and paris. Levens, who wrote a cantate for the toulouse academy in 1724, is first and foremost a composer of sacred music. His creative activity is revealed by the masses, requiem, magnificat, christmas hymns and grands motets he left us. His te deum was played in bordeaux for the entry of the duc de richelieu in 1756 and on august 12th 1789 for a "revolutionary" celebration. Levens's style combines the natural quality of classicism "a la francaise" with the baroque charm of italian music in whose concerted virtuosity he sometimes indulges together with ormamental lightness. The stylistic and comparative study of the manuscripts allowed the authentification. .

Full textThroughout our study, we have aimed at pointing out a new literary genre appeared between 1660 and 1715 : "l'entretien artistique" through six works : « Les délices des arts » by Desmarests de Saint-Sorlin (1659), « La peinture » by Perrault (1668), « La gloire du Val de Grâce » by Molière (1669), a dialogue about art in « Le songe » by Vaux de la Fontaine (1673), « Le songe de Philomathe » by Félibien (1683) and a "prologue d'opéra" by Boileau (1713). Not only has the comparing of these texts stressed the existence of a new literary genre but also helped to detect close links between pictorial aesthetics which is what "l'entretien artistique" is about and theatrical aesthetics. As a matter of fact, it has seemed to us of a paramount importance to emphasize the necessity of the dramatizing of art, an idea which gained recognition in the 17th century and which succeeded in associating painting with theatre. Close to the theatrical world, "l'entretien artistique" by advocating the "gathering of arts" becomes a kind of clear meditation about the art of opera. Disclosing the tastes of a period by giving prominence to a certain aesthetical conception, "l'entretien artistique" seems then to find its justification in theatre by offering the seventeenth century man a "modus vivendi" so that he should become more of an "honnete homme"
