Au sein du quartier ouvrier de Pointe-St-Charles à Montréal, le Carrefour d’éducation populaire, organisme mis sur pied et contrôlé par les citoyens, a organisé au cours des douze dernières années diverses sessions d’alphabétisation. L’article évoque les principales étapes qui ont structuré la réflexion pratique et théorique, pédagogique et politique de cette importante expérience d’alphabétisation au Québec. Dans sa dernière partie (1978) l’article rapporte de façon détaillée la méthodologie d’intervention utilisée et en dresse le bilan.

Abstract:

AbstractTheology lives in the days of the frost. Postmodern philosophers question the very possbility of God-language. In response, Edith Wyschogrod's Saints and Postmodernism attempts to develop an ethics grounded in lives of saints. Her definition of “saint” as one devoted to the alleviation of pain is problematic; moreover, her definition does not in fact grow out of hagiography. Rather, it reduces saints' lives to didactic tales. Still, Wyschogrod points toward a more adequate description of the saint as one who sees the being of others as constituted by a lack. An emphasis on otherness is developed in the theologies of Mark Taylor and Charles Winquist. Using their insights and Wyschogrod's, I propose that Christianity turn to the “minor sun” of saints' lives to rethink theology in light of the postmodern critique.

Abstract:

RÉSUMÉ Le complexe du Cap Charles est emboîté dans les rythmites de Leclercville, sur la rive sud du Saint-Laurent, en aval de Deschaillons. Il est composé d'une lithozone inférieure de till de fond (diamicton I) dont la base incorpore les argiles des rythmites de Leclercville et dont la fabrique indique un écoulement glaciaire vers le SE. Au-dessus, une lithozone de sables turbiditiques, puis deux zones de till flué (diamictons II et III), séparées par une zone d'argile stratifiée, représentent une sédimentation de marge glaciaire en milieu lacustre. Le sommet est une surface d'érosion. Les turbidites de Parisville à lits diamictiques couvrent le complexe du Cap Charles et précèdent le Till de Gentilly. Faute de repères, la position stratigraphique du complexe du Cap Charles est incertaine. Il représente soit des phases préliminaires à l'englaciation majeure représentée par le Till de Gentilly, postérieures à l'Intervalle de Saint-Pierre, soit des phases associées aux tills immédiatement antérieurs à l'Intervalle de Saint-Pierre. Il a été mis en place par des glaces allochtones venant des Laurentides puis par fluages, vraisemblablement à la périphérie d'un lobe. Le complexe du Cap Charles révèle que l'histoire glaciaire de la vallée du Saint-Laurent est complexe et reste encore peu connue.

Abstract:

Abstract Cet article présente la démarche de modélisation bio-chimique réalisée à l’aide des données existantes sur le bassin versant de la rivière Saint-Charles. L’objectif est de comprendre le comportement global du milieu récepteur de ce bassin versant. La modélisation de la qualité de l’eau avec le modèle QUAL2E est effectuée en considérant un état existant et un ensemble de scénarios. Les incertitudes sur les paramètres de dégradation et les données d’entrée ont fait l’objet d’une analyse de sensibilité. En général, les résultats des simulations de la qualité (DBO et coliformes fécaux) sont satisfaisants pour la partie amont mais pas pour la partie aval de la rivière. Une approche par scénarios a été développée pour mieux équilibrer le bilan des coliformes et de la DBO ainsi que pour estimer la réduction des charges polluantes sur le bassin nécessaire afin d’obtenir une qualité d’eau acceptable en regard des critères de qualité pour activités récréatives. Les résultats suggèrent qu’un ensemble de sources de coliformes et de DBO actuellement non répertoriées sont responsables de la mauvaise qualité de la partie aval de la rivière. L’hypothèse émise est que ces charges polluantes proviennent de fuites du réseau d’égouts.

Charles de Saint-Gilles Lenfant, page du roi Louis XIV et sous-brigadier de la première compagnie des mousquetaires, fit paraître, entre 1677 et 1678, quatre fables dans Le Mercure Galant qui, plus tard, furent rassemblées, avec vingt-quatre autres apologues, dans un volume intitulé La Muse Mousquetaire. Nous les analysons et en donnons le texte en appendice. Elles sont toutes construites en forme de rondeau et, pour respecter cette structure stylistique fixe et rigide, la matière ésopique subit des adaptations.En prenant le parti de se servir du rondeau, Saint-Gilles s’inscrit clairement dans la lignée de la galanterie mondaine et ses fables acquièrent une atmosphère de douceur et de finesse. Elles sont l’aboutissement d’un exercice de style très ingénieux, bien que dissimulé, qui paradoxalement les rend plus désinvoltes et décontractées, atténuant leur tempérament souvent sentencieux et sévère. La fable, enfermée dans le moule strict et tout à fait insolite du rondeau, gagne en gaieté, aisance, liberté. Quant au rondeau, il prend ses distances par rapport aux frivolités et affectations et s’ouvre sur une dimension plus réfléchie et instructive.

ABSTRACTThe work of fiction has many signs and meanings are different for each reader. Signs could reflect what might happen in real life, such as the about communication. Similarly as novella titled The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry which have a lot of interpretations. As a result of the extensive interpretation, a lot of readers do not understand what the thing to be conveyed by the author. Therefore, this study looked for signs that confuse the reader and interpret it using semiotics by Charles Sanders Peirce. The study also outlines the signs associated with intrapersonal and interpersonal communication in real life, especially studied of Symbolic Interaction Theory and Coordinated Management of Meaning. ABSTRAKSKarya fiksi memiliki banyak tanda dan makna yang berbeda untuk setiap pembaca. Tanda dapat mencerminkan apa yang mungkin terjadi dalam kehidupan nyata, seperti tentang komunikasi. Demikian seperti novella berjudul The Little Prince karya Antoine de Saint-Exupéry yang memiliki banyak interpretasi. Sebagai hasil dari interpretasi yang luas, banyak pembaca tidak mengerti apa hal yang ingin disampaikan oleh penulis. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini mencari tanda-tanda yang membingungkan pembaca dan menafsirkannya menggunakan semiotika oleh Charles Sanders Peirce. Studi ini juga menguraikan tanda-tanda yang terkait dengan komunikasi intrapersonal dan interpersonal dalam kehidupan nyata, terutama yang dipelajari tentang Teori Interaksi Simbolik dan Manajemen makna terkoordinasi.

Abstract:

Este artigo procura contribuir para as discussões em torno do conceito histórico de educação integral, tendo em vista que existem algumas lacunas em torno desse tema. Aqui iremos abordar os conceitos de educação integral no pensamento dos intelectuais: Claude-Henri de Rouvroy ou Conde de Saint-Simon (1760-1825), François Marie Charles Fourier (1772-1837) e Pierre-Joseph Proudhon (1809-1865). A pesquisa utiliza as obras dos autores escritas/publicadas no século XIX. A metodologia procura entender a produção intelectual de maneira dialética e dentro do contexto histórico em que foi produzida. Indicamos como conclusões que Proudhon, Saint-Simon e Charles Fourier, consideravam no processo educacional que a parte literária estaria diretamente vinculada com a científica, unindo teoria e prática. Podemos aventar que as contribuições desses pensadores foram importante nas reflexões educacionais e na defesa de uma educação comprometida com a transformação social presente no pensamento socialista e no movimento operário do século XIX e XX.

Abstract:

This study fits into the scheme of research work being carried out to control stormwater rejects. Its main objective is to represent, with the help of a water quality index, the deterioration of the quality of the Saint-Charles River, caused by the combined sewer overflows of Quebec City, Canada, during a rainstorm. The proposed quality index has been applied to evaluate the recreational use of the river.The overall results obtained in the case of a 20 mm rain show index values that characterize a water of poor quality. Moreover, within the region of the combined sewer overflow, a minimum delay of 24 h is necessary to allow the water quality of the Saint-Charles River to return to the level where it was at the dry period, which generally has a value less than the critical value for recreative use. Key words: water quality index, urban runoff, water pollution, nonpoint source of pollution, water quality, water use, environmental impact, pollution control.

Abstract:

In the year 1953, a New Testament scholar named Charles Harold Dodd published a book titled The Interpretation of the Fourth Gospel which revolutionized the way of thinking about Christian eschatology. In his opus vitae, Charles Dodd argued based on the Gospel of John that apocalyptic realities are in fact already realised through Jesus and His Apostles’ ministry. On this premise, he coined the term “realized eschatology”, in which all announcements concerning the Kingdom of God had already been realized according to Dodd. This “realized eschatology” can be seen through various realities of everyday life of the community of believers. In the case of Saint Jerome of Stridon, he saw the eschatological reality in the monastic lifestyle. This article aims to show what eschatological signs are present in the description of the monastic community found in the letters of Saint Jerome. For in his letters many times he refers to eschatological realities already present in monastic life, which is for him a kind of paradise on earth and the fulfilment of Christ’s eschatological prophecies.

Abstract:

Abstract Cet article présente la démarche de modélisation hydrologique qui a été réalisée à l’aide des données existantes sur le bassin versant de la rivière Saint-Charles. Les débits sur le bassin sont obtenus à l’aide du modèle CEQUEAU. Les débits obtenus par CEQUEAU sont utilisés par la suite lors de la modélisation bio-chimique, qui est le sujet d’un second article. Cette étude est réalisée dans l’optique de voir dans quelle mesure une telle approche de modélisation est facile d’utilisation pour le gestionnaire de la ressource eau. Les résultats de simulations de CEQUEAU sont bons pour la partie rurale du bassin. À cause du manque de données disponibles sur les bassins des principaux tributaires, en particulier celui de la rivière Lorette, les résultats y sont moins bons. Pour la partie urbanisée du bassin les différences entre les débits observés et les débits simulés sont imputables au manque de données observées, à une forte influence anthropique sur la gestion de l’eau et vraisemblablement à une trop grande simplification mathématique des processus hydrologiques en milieu urbain.

Abstract:

This article explores the nexus between Giuseppe Tartini's concertos for violin and orchestra, written for the Franciscan Basilica of Saint Anthony in Padua, and the devotion to this Saint's tongue, still preserved as a relic. Anthony's tongue, hagiographers write, was the instrument of a rhetoric that transcended verbal signification, able to move people of different languages and even animals. Soon, the tongue of Saint Anthony became a powerful symbol of universal language. In the eighteenth century, the Catholic Church, and especially the followers of Saint Anthony, revitalized their global mission to overcome cultural and linguistic barriers. Commissioning orchestral church music was part of this strategy. Like Anthony's preaching, Tartini's music was informed by the utopian goal to reach out to a pluralist community. His music and ideas attracted the attention of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Charles Burney, both engaged in contemporary debates on the quest for universality of music in a multicultural world. Newly discovered evidence sheds light on the liturgical context of Tartini's violin concertos, as well as on religious rituals of music making and listening that left long-lasting traces of sacrality in the secular rites of production and consumption of instrumental music.

This essay examines the conversion of Charles Ryder that interacts with his, and Waugh’s, reaction to modern art. Parallels are drawn with the conversion of Saint Augustine. The essay concludes that Waugh’s critique of modern art theory is superficial, and ignores the relationship between Christianity and modern art. This relationship is explored through the work of Joseph Masheck. The history of pictorial flatness is traced through religiously inspired art and is seen to be in continuity with modern art such as the black paintings of Ad Reinhardt. Saint Augustine’s theology of art as a means rather than as an end functions in Brideshead Revisited as a way to reconcile Waugh’s Catholic and artistic intentions.

Abstract:

Marie Barbier (1663-1739) was a Congrégation de Notre-Dame of Montreal nun, superior and mystic. The story of her life remains in the form of two biographies. The first biography was written by Charles de Glandelet, her confessor and spiritual advisor, some time before his death in 1725. The second biography is an edited version of the Glandelet manuscript, almost 40 years after Marie Barbier's death. This article examines the many challenges faced in the attempt to construct a biography of this woman. It will explore not only the physical difficulties involved in interpreting these hand-written manuscripts, the obstacles presented by their hagiographical and 18th-century scholarly tradition, but also the barriers presented by post-modern scholarship with respect to the accession of "truth" and "voice."

The construction of the Royal Corpus Christi College-Seminary in Valencia was begun in the late sixteenth century. The building was designed in accordance with the principles laid down by the Council of Trent and explained in detail in a treatise by Saint Charles Borromeo. In the present study a laser scanner was used to achieve a high degree of accuracy in tracing the building's outer walls and internal floor plan. The two most important of the outer walls, the south and west, were given special attention as regards regulating lines and different proportional relationships.

En 1967, Charles Frostin, historien spécialiste de l’étude de la colonie française de Saint-Domingue, proposait une première interprétation « atlantique » du procès d’« américanisation » de la société locale. À son avis, au XVIIIe siècle, le rôle de la contrebande avait été centrale, à la fois comme instrument de communication et vecteur d’échange de sentiments autonomistes. Cette approche historique, minoritaire à l’époque, fut largement reprise depuis les années 1980. Toutefois, de récentes recherches ont démontré qu’il reste encore beaucoup à étudier pour comprendre la complexité des lignes évolutives des communautés dominguoises du XVIIIe siècle.

Résumé Cette étude analyse les conditions de réalisation du soutien social dans les quartiers de Saint-Henri et de la Pointe Saint-Charles, en comparant un groupe de 61 prestataires de la sécurité du revenu avec un échantillon de 21 personnes de la population vivant au-dessus du seuil de la pauvreté, et en fonction du degré de détresse dans chaque groupe. Elle vise également à décrire comment une adversité vécue par les prestataires avec ou sans détresse vient briser ou modifier le réseau de soutien. Les résultats indiquent que le réseau social est moins fiable en présence de détresse qu’en son absence, que les personnes en détresse se sont vues plus fréquemment refuser du soutien ou être abandonnées et qu’elles ont davantage de personnes nuisibles dans leur entourage. De plus, les événements vécus comportent souvent une atteinte à leur réputation, des menaces, des trahisons et des refus à un droit légitime. Les personnes en détresse sont aussi davantage isolées.

The first argument set out in 1877 by the Parisian astronomer Charles André, founder of the Observatoire de Lyon, to justify the establishment of an astronomical institute in Saint-Genis-Laval was the fact that it offered the opportunity to install remote marks along its meridian. André had used this argument three years before to reject another site selected by a local committee. However, at that time remote meridian marks had been abandoned by most astronomers in favour of close ones. We have conducted field research to discover the remains of these marks, as well as to seek evidence – both in the literature and in archives – of their use. This investigation shows that the argument for remote marks was in fact driven by geodetic considerations. The choice of Saint-Genis-Laval was actually made by geodesists of the Dépôt Général de la Guerre and its director, François Perrier, who wanted to institute new observatories in Province as key points in the primary geodetic network of France.
