Full textThis work concerns the social functioning of the contemporary pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, based on fieldwork carried out in 1998, 1999 and 2002. The main thesis is that this pilgrimage has become a metaphor for 'going forth' and 'life as a journey' and is no longer only travelled by Catholics but attracts a much larger international and intergenerational public. The surroundings are conducive to both the religious experience within the Catholic Christian tradition and to a self identity quest, personalising the camino and distancing it from the Church's idea of a 'pilgrimage'. In this context, the word camino becomes fundamental for understanding the different spiritual attitudes implied in the walk and the reconstruction of believing on this pilgrim route

Full textThis study - conducted over the period of time from 12th to 15th century - has led to the statement that French pilgrims were not as numerous as was originally believed. That the galician shrine occupied such a large place in the minds of the kings and knights of the time, each of them aspiring to identify either with charlemange or with roland and his companions, was a result of the success of the turpin chronicle. It was by rushinh upon pierre le cruel or the english taht the knights accomphished their pilgrimage, or alternatively through a passage of arms, a dramatization of the same theme. As for ordinary pilgrims, the literature may leed us to believe there were milions of them, but in actual fact they numbered only a few hundred, dotted along the road of time. Pilgrims crowds did exist however, and could be met with on the roads leading to the many shrines dedicated to Saint James, who was both one and many and was woven into many legends, most of which had been imported from the orient at the times of the crusades ans reshaped by chivalrous and popular imagination. The importance of these local shrines which held Saint James's relics, or even his body, can be attested to by the political stakes which they representated at times, and by the hospital and hospitable structures as well as brotherhoods they generated

Full textDuring the last twenty years, the pilgrimage to Saint James has experience'd unprecedented growth, which ranks among the most interesting phenomenon produced by Christianity in modern times. This apprently new reality is here explored through a wide ethnographic research. First of all, our investigation necessarily bring to the fore the processes of one's culture's reformulation and reconstruction when faced with historical changes that end to reduce its own influence. Insofar as this pilgrimage has been, first and foremost, made to encompass in one's universe, that is, in a typical set expertly restored, scattedred elements of the culture, the way individuals and groups of people coming from different backgrounds may be required to establish new appertaining relationships or to convert to the norms and values of this alternative world, becomes a critical issue. In this perspective, the investigation of social interactions will be extended to different categories of beings and things with whichy men and women come - ritually or not - into contact as long as they are embedded, to varying degrees, in this universe. The opportunity is thus given here to question the intercourse between remote ancestors and participants and to interrogate, beyond figures and symbolic forms introduced by the pilgrims or imposed by the authorities, the nature of the connections and relationships the propose to meet and stabilize in the temporary but nvertheless striking experiment of this totality

Full textThis doctorate thesis is based on the study of particular musical aspects bound to the cult to Saint-James-the-Great and to the pilgrimage to St James of Compostelle. It is set in Spain, France and Italy in the XVIIth century and first half of the XVIII th. The historical, political, sociological, cultural and religious links which oppose or bind these three nations at the time of the setting of the Catholic Reformation stemmed from the Council of Trente show that the place held by the routes to Compostelle and St James is more important there than anywhere else at this time. There is a rich bibliography but it doesn’t associate nor synthesize the different aspects of what can constitute an only set of problems. In the same way, no draft of a systematic census of the works of the sacred repertory had been attempted so far whereas the restitution of the works is only exceptional. Therefore, dealing with a set of problems which is based on a spiritual matter through a way which has never been taken – the way of Baroque music – so as to understand it better, the thesis aims at observing, recording and analysing a whole range of the aspects which constitute as many « joists » and in any case a complex framework, especially due to the variety of the sources, their nature and content. Nevertheless, in the light of a renewed methodology, of a wide range of original sources and a whole of musical events and works associated to the cult of St James and the pilgrimage to Compostelle which is also a musical roving, the richness of which is due to the extent of the repertory it aroused as well as the exchanges and encounters it allowed, this research aims at opening new ways which will be taken to enrich knowledge

Full textWe aim here at giving an idea of the evolution of sprirituality through centuries since the Middle Ages. Using literary evidences and movies we wanted to find out what make pilgrimof today different from pilgrims of the Middle Ages. First and foremost we tried to understand the real motivations of pilgrims. Our first question was : Do pilgrims of today share the same ones as pilgrims of yesterday ? Pilgrims of the Middle Ages had at their time many different reasons to take the road towards Santiago de Compostela. Some where, for instance, looking for redemption, hoping a miracle whereas others did it for political reasons. But pilgrims nowdays don't walk for political reasons any more. Most of them just want to take a good walk or need to feel themselves closer to Mother Nature. However it remains a very hard challenge for all. New dangers effectively threaten them on the orad although modern equipments make now the crossing of natural obstacles, like rivers or mountains (the so-called "loca horribila"), quite easier than before. If highwaymen are not to be feared any longer, falling in with dishonest false pilgrims (people using tourist traps to dupe exhausted pilgrims) may always happen. Pilgrims of today are really quite different from pilgrims of the Middle Ages. Their feet are no more accustumed to covering so great distances. Moreover, carrying rucksacks is a real ordeal. Nevertheless they share the same spiritual quest as pilgrims of yesterday. It has just taken different forms through the centuries. Anyway that pilgrimage knows a real revival today. Its future looks so promising that we will probably see for a long time yet courageous and anonymous people following in pilgrim footsteps, marching on the road to Santiago de Compostela
Huang, Lei. "L'abbatiale Sainte-Foy de Conques (XIe - XIIe siècles)." Thesis, Paris 1, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018PA01H052.
Full textThis archaeological study of the building of the abbey church of Sainte-Foy in Conques, which is mainly focused on facing stones, has a double objective: on the one hand, to discern, as much as possible, material indications likely to enlighten the progress of construction work; on the other hand, to understand technical and economic dimensions and, more generally, the site organisation of this major Romanesque building project. Archaeological data, such as masonry discontinuities, distribution of different petrographic types, stone-cutting techniques, masons’ marks and putlog holes, make it possible to propose a construction phasing, which offers an independent and efficient framework for study of the sculpture of Sainte-Foy. The sculpture evolution is thus traced, through a global stylistic approach. Artistic transfers between Conques, Santiago de Compostela and Auvergne have also been better defined, which leads to reconsider the chronology of Romanesque churches of Auvergne, especially as Conques and Auvergne were located in the same technical geography during the second half of the eleventh century
