Yves de Vallone’s manuscript treatise La Religion du chrétien conduit par la raison éternelle has become something of a landmark in the history of free thought, since it bears witness to the erratic intellectual career of its author. Initially a canon of the Congregation of Sainte-Geneviève, Vallone denounces a Socinian plot led by the directors of the institution. He is persecuted and eventually escapes to Switzerland, then to Germany and finally to Holland, where he arrives in Zwolle at the height of the Leenhof controversy. He embarks on a “metaphysical” defence of Calvinist doctrine but is

Formation of the cult of St. Paul of Constantinople (the Confessor) at St. Petersburg was connected with the ascension of Paul I on the day of this saint. In 1797 the home church of the Naval Cadet Corps was dedicated to this saint of the 4th century. According to the description of Fr. Capiton Belyavsky, the icon of St. Paul of Constantinople in this church had a curious feature: on St. Paul’s chest the order of St. Anna was depicted and according to the local tale it was depicted on demand of the emperor Paul I himself. Such unusual detail confirms by its extreme strangeness the indication o

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter reinterprets Quatremère’s vision in spring 1791 to transform Soufflot’s church of Sainte-Geneviève into the temple of the nation. Quatremère’s vision guided the only large-scale architectural project during the Revolution, but his ideas are overshadowed by the Panthéon’s later republican and anti-clerical associations. The chapter therefore revisits the project’s origins, showing how Quatremère defended the Constituent Assembly’s demand to repurpose the church. It explains his vision for modest architectural changes, a wooded Elysium around the temple, and decorative scul
