Abstract:
This article deals with Philippe Druillet's three-volume comic adaptation (1980–1985) of Salammbô, Gustave Flaubert's historical novel from 1862, set three centuries BC. Flaubert was famous for not wanting his texts illustrated: he argued that the preciseness of images would undo the poetic vagueness of his written words. The article examines how Druillet tackles the challenge of graphically representing Flaubert's canonical work without reducing the priestess Salammbô into a given type. The analysis shows a dynamic adaptation process in which Druillet gives a kaleidoscopic form to Flaubert's text. His variation on the Salammbô character foregrounds photography, a medium historically relevant to the novel but also to Druillet's own artistic training. Featuring his character Lone Sloane in the role of Mathô, the adaptation proves to be a highly personal appropriation of the novel, where Druillet enhances an autobiographical dimension of his work previously hinted at in La Nuit and Gaïl.

Abstract:
The Polish edition of the comic book adaptation of Salammbô – towards editorial and peritextual study The author of this paper discusses the problem of peritextual and editorial issues, using the French 19th century novel Salammbô by Gustave Flaubert as an example. The following study consistsof peritextual analysis of the Polish version of Druillet’s comic book adaptation, which is the object ofthis research. The methodological approach is based on semiotic analysis. Umberto Eco’s conceptsof model reader and closed/opened texts are also applied. The aim of this paper is to define the role of editorial peritexts of literary comic book adaptations in the world of mass media.

Abstract. In this study we implement a data assimilation tool using a 3-D radiation belt model and an ensemble Kalman filter approach. High time and space reanalysis of the electron radiation belt fluxes is obtained over the time period 5 October to 25 October 1990 by combining sparse observations with the Salammbô 3-D model in an optimal way. The convergence of the ensemble Kalman filter is analyzed carefully. The risk of using a biased physical model is discussed and relative consequences are highlighted. Finally, a validation against CRRES data and major improvements compared to pure physics based model are presented.

Abstract:
The paper brings a motif of Salammbô’s preparations undertaken prior encountering Mathô. The scene becomes a motive for analysis of the paradigm of relation between a copper mirror and a daguerreotype plate. Both artefacts are made of the same matter. Being tools for discovering reality and outpouring into an imaginary world at the same time, both provide special dimension to the visual experience. Finally, both are epistemic metaphors. Since second half of 19th century copper finds a new place in mythology of the industrial object. Vast presence of copper in Flaubert’s Carthage impacts historical and oriental picturesqueness. Does Carthage resemble the legendary City of Copper?

Abstract:

Abstract:
Fiction that had Punic Carthage as subject was, until the beginning of the 19th century, exclusively based on the historic sources written by Greeks and Romans. Nevertheless, the first – rivals of Carthage, and second – their enemies, have necessarily proposed to their posterity a biased story, full of subjectivity, rivalry or even hate. The development of archeology as a field of research as well as an auxiliary science of history has allowed to confront the ancients texts with the material coming from the Punic civilization, and consequently questioned centuries old ingrained stereotypes about Carthage. The decolonization of two countries that were directly influenced by Punic Carthage – Tunisia and Lebanon – has then emerged new stakes: the ideology used historic information to support the national identity of these freshly born countries. In Salammbô the autor of the Dictionnaire des idées reçues paradoxically mentions the historic stereotype that nourished the existence of Moloch god. In Elegie à Carthage, Senghor use the Didon myth to support the Panafricanist ideology. Finally, the Tunisian Fawzi Mellah and the Libanese J-J Tabet both dispute Elyssa identity.

Abstract:
Abstract. Wave particle interactions play an important role in controlling the dynamics of the radiation belts. The purpose of this study is to estimate how variations in the plasma density can affect diffusion rates resulting from interactions between chorus waves and plasmaspheric hiss with energetic particles and the resulting evolution of the energetic electron population. We perform a statistical analysis of the electron density derived from the plasma wave experiment on the CRRES satellite for two magnetic local time sectors corresponding to near midnight and near noon. We present the cumulative probability distribution of the electron plasma density for three levels of magnetic activity as measured by Kp. The largest densities are seen near L* = 2.5 while the smallest occur near L* = 6. The broadest distribution, corresponding to the greatest variability, occurs near L* = 4. We calculate diffusion coefficients for plasmaspheric hiss and whistler mode chorus for extreme values of the electron density and estimate the effects on the radiation belts using the Salammbô model. At L* = 4 and L* = 6, in the low density case, using the density from the 5th percentile of the cumulative distribution function, electron energy diffusion by chorus waves is strongest at 2 MeV and increases the flux by up to 3 orders of magnitude over a period of 24 h. In contrast, in the high density case, using the density from the 95th percentile, there is little acceleration at energies above 800 keV at L* = 6, and virtually no acceleration at L* = 4. In this case the strongest energy diffusion occurs at lower energies around 400 keV where the flux at L* = 6 increases 3 orders of magnitude.

Full text
Abstract:
Electric Orbit Raising (EOR) for telecommunication satellites significantly reduced on-board fuel mass at the price of extended transfer durations. These relatively long transfers, which usually span a few months, cross large spans of the radiation belts, resulting in significant exposure of the spacecraft to space radiations. Since they are not very populated, the radiation environment of intermediate regions of the radiation belts is less constrained than on popular orbits such as low Earth orbit or geostationary orbit in standard environment models. In particular, there is a need for more specific models for the MeV energy range proton fluxes, responsible for solar arrays degradations, and hence critical for EOR missions. ONERA has developed a specification model of proton fluxes dedicated for EOR missions as part of the ESA ARTES program. This model can estimate the average proton fluxes between 60 keV and 20 MeV on arbitrary trajectories on the typical duration of EOR transfers. A global statistical model of the radiation belts was extracted from the Van Allen Probes RBSPICE data. For regions with no or low sampling, simulation results from the Salammbô radiation belt model were used. Special care was taken to model the temporal dynamics of the belts on the considered mission durations. A Gaussian Process model was developed, allowing to compute the distribution of the average fluxes on arbitrary mission durations analytically. Satellites trajectories can be flown in the resulting global distribution, yielding the proton flux spectrum distribution as seen by the spacecraft. We show the results of the model on a typical EOR trajectory. The obtained fluxes are compared to the standard AP8 model, the AP9 model and validated using the THEMIS satellites data. We illustrate the expected effect on solar cell degradation, where our model shows an increase of up to 20% degradation prediction compared to AP8.
