Abstract:
Abstract Since 1970 the Saldanha Bay region on the West Coast of the Western Cape Province has been high on South Africa’s national development agenda. The region has been struggling for years to meet the preconditions for economic take-off. In this analysis the Saldanha Bay region is positioned in the contexts of global competition among steel-producing countries, South Africa’s national development plan and the Greater Cape Town functional region. The aim is to explain the nature and extent of the relationship between a single secondary industry - ArcelorMittal Saldanha - and the economic development of the larger Saldanha region. Following a brief introduction and background to the Saldanha Bay region, the evolutionary economic geography (EEG) approach and the role of institutions in the development of regions are reviewed. Saldanha Steel (ArcelorMittal), the pioneer industrial firm, is analysed by using a mixed-method approached, where semi-structured interviews and a questionnaire survey are the main research instruments. The contribution of Saldanha Steel to regional development is explored.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Perepsilonema benguelae sp. nov. and Leptepsilonema saldanhae sp. nov. are described and illustrated from coarse sand sediments in Saldanha Bay, along the west coast of South Africa. Perepsilonema benguelae sp. nov. is characterised by a large swollen body in the genital region, the annuli are not clearly orientated into anteriorly and posteriorly directed margins and copulatory thorns are restricted to three pairs in the precloacal region. In Leptepsilonema saldanhae sp. nov. the somatic setae in the pharyngeal region are very long and the first ambulatory setae of the external subventral row are short. Other distinguishing features include the shape of the amphidial fovea and the copulatory apparatus, and the presence of six ventro-lateral copulatory thorns around the cloaca. These descriptions are the first for the family Epsilonematidae from the west coast of South Africa.

Abstract:
Abstract Previous studies have shown that the 542 Ma Saldanha eruption centre, situated on the west coast of South Africa, consists of the basal Saldanha Ignimbrite, which is partly intermingled with and partly overlain by the Jacobs Bay Ignimbrite, both having S-type characteristics. Together, the Saldanha eruption centre and the Postberg eruption centre (to the south, across Saldanha Bay) form part of the volcanic phase of the Cape Granite Suite. The lowermost parts of the Jacob’s Bay Ignimbrite contain magma clasts that are chemically dissimilar to their host ignimbrites. Some clasts are recrystallized ignimbrites that are chemically distinct from any unit that has outcrop expression, and are inferred to form part of a previously unrecognised volcanic event. Other clasts are non-fragmental, hypabyssal rocks that were evidently intruded prior to the explosive intracaldera eruptions that formed the Saldanha ignimbrites. Beach cobbles and pebbles, sampled from the Trekoskraal coastal area, include three texturally and chemically distinct groups – rhyolitic ignimbrites, rhyolitic hypabyssal rocks and dacitic hypabyssal rocks or lavas. Only a minority of these rocks (from the rhyolitic ignimbrite group) show some chemical affinities with the Saldanha Bay ignimbrites. The other pebble types show neither chemical nor textural similarities with the rocks of either the Saldanha or the Postberg eruption centres. The pebbles and cobbles also have no chemical affinities with any of the granitic intrusive rocks of the region. Their chemical and isotopic characteristics suggest that a variety of different magma batches were formed through partial melting of heterogeneous Malmesbury Group metamorphic rocks, at depth. LA-ICP-MS dating of igneous zircon crystals from two of the pebbles (a low-silica rhyolite ignimbrite and a dacite) yielded magmatic ages of 540 ± 4 Ma and 533 ± 4 Ma, respectively. Taking uncertainty brackets into account, these new dates suggest that there may have been a 3 Myr hiatus in eruptive activity, between the eruptions responsible for the exposed Saldanha ignimbrites and the eruptions that produced the volcanic units from which the pebbles were derived. This confirms the inference that there was a previously unidentified, later, volcanic event associated with the Cape Granite Suite in the Saldanha area.

Abstract:
The fishing industry is the socio-economic base of coastal towns in the West Coast region of South Africa. Regional development focussed on Saldanha Bay is locked into a tight relationship between the Port (oil, gas and iron ore), the local government and two industrial sectors, namely steel and maritime fishing. This paper examines the role Sea Harvest Corporation (Pty) Ltd has played in the evolution and development (socio-economic transformation) of the Greater Saldanha Bay region. 1 First, the literature on the roles of institutions in regional development in general and fishing in particular is reviewed. Second, the state of fish resources at global, national and local levels is discussed to provide the wider context. Third, a mixed-method approach is used in a case study of Saldanha Bay’s deep-sea trawling industry where the evolution of Sea Harvest as a company in the Greater Saldanha Bay region and its role in the region’s development are treated. Sea Harvest is shown to play an important role in the local and regional economies – where more than 2000 permanent jobs have been sustained over the last 10 years and at least 25% of all households in the Greater Saldanha Bay region have benefitted from involvement with the company. Last, some lessons from this highly specific case study are shared.

This paper examines the obstacles in translating inter-lingual subtitling, and then suggests some weighty theoretical strategies to deal with such difficulties from English translation into Persian. The present study makes an effort to analyze three main strategies such as deleting, condensing and adapting in the subtitling translation (Baker & Saldanha, 2009). This study is a corpus-based, comparative, descriptive and non-judgmental analysis of English-Persian parallel corpus. Moreover, this research is comprised of English audio scripts of four American movies with Persian subtitles. The result indicates that Baker and Saldanha’s proposed strategies are applicable, and the most frequent strategy is deleting at 53.47%.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT On July 16, 2000, a rupture of a pipeline occurred in the Scraper area of the PETROBRAS refinery located in Araucaria, in the state of Parana, south of Brazil. This resulted in the spill of approximately 4,000m3 (1,060,000 gallons) of a crude oil (Cusiana − 41°API). The spilled oil spread over part of the refinery area, affecting the wetlands that are crossed by the Arroio Saldanha creek before discharging into the Barigui River, which is a tributary of Iguassu River. This entire area crossed by the creek is referred to as Point Zero (PO). This paper presents the chemical data of 2 monitoring programs: the Barigui, Iguassu and Arroio Saldanha Rivers, and the groundwater of Point Zero. The programs were carried out in 2 phases: for 3 months immediately after the spill and 1 year later. They included the analyses of BTEX, TPH, PAH, n-alkanes, UCM and biomarkers for the water and sediment samples. The rivers program encompassed 13 stations along Barigui and Iguassu Rivers and 1 station at Arroio Saldanha Creek. The results in water and sediments demonstrated the efficiency of the recovering of the spilled oil from the water. That suggested that the impact of the spill on the Barigui and Iguassu Rivers was of a short duration after the spill. On the other hand, the hydrocarbon concentration data for Arroio Saldanha Creek during the 3 months after the spill revealed high levels of hydrocarbon contamination, which corroborated the visual inspection. The groundwater monitoring program in the terrestrial area of Point Zero was initiated shortly after the spill. The groundwater program included about 80 monitoring wells (piezometers) installed, along the Arroio Saldanha Creek and in the wetlands crossed by the creek. It could be observed that BTEX and TPH groundwater concentrations decreased significantly after one year.

Abstract:
Abstract Granite commonly contains high concentrations of uranium, with consequent high exhalation of radon. The geology of the West Coast peninsula of South Africa is dominated by granite, and a recent article predicted potentially high indoor radon concentrations in this region’s two largest towns, Vredenburg and Saldanha. This research aimed to measure indoor radon levels in these towns. Measurements were first done for a minimum of 3 d during warmer months, with houses typically being more ventilated. Thirty-four homes in Vredenburg and 27 in Saldanha were measured, and the average indoor radon determined to be 40 and 58 Bq m−3, respectively. The measurements were then repeated during the colder months, and an increase in average radon concentration of 173 Bq m−3 for Saldanha and 153 Bq m−3 for Vredenburg was found. The granite geology and lifestyle of occupants during the colder months seem to contribute towards elevated levels of indoor radon concentrations.

Abstract:
Abstract Invasive bivalve molluscs, Mediterranean mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) were used as sentinel biomonitors of pollution by inorganic contaminants in Saldanha Bay and the Langebaan Lagoon area of South Africa. Two complementary analytical techniques, ICP-MS and NAA, allowed for determination of concentrations of 31 major and trace elements including heavy metals and arsenic in the soft tissues of the mussels. Distinct seasonal patterns were found in the dynamics of these concentrations, with the mussels accumulating much more trace elements in winter than in the summer. In general, the mussels that grew naturally also demonstrated higher concentrations of As, Cd, Fe, Hg and Zn than those that were farmed. Fe showed the highest levels with a maximum concentration of 444 mg/kg followed by Zn with a maximum of 228 mg/kg. The concentrations of Mn and Pb were significantly higher in the Port of Saldanha close to the jetty where ores containing these metals are loaded in comparison with the other sampling sites. It was concluded that bivalve molluscs present themselves as effective biomonitors when assessing marine aquatic pollution by inorganic contaminants in the Saldanha Bay region.

The reader of translations has gained increasing attention in Translation Studies in recent years, with more focused studies looking into the reception of translated works either through textual analysis of reviews (Zhao 2009, Bielsa 2013, D’Egidio 2015, Saldanha 2018) or the analysis of interviews and focus groups with real readers (Arnold 2016). The reception of works by anglophone readers, in particular, has raised interest among scholars who wish to understand the expectations and patterns of literary consumption by a hegemonic, central culture. This article explores how Galician writers Manuel Rivas and Domingo Villar’s work is perceived and re-constructed by an anglophone readership through an analysis of professional (press) reviews and semiprofessional (blog) reviews based on the homogenization- eterogenizationexoticismcontinuum posited by Saldanha (2018).

Abstract:
ABSTRACT On July 16, 2000, a crude oil spill occurred at the PETROBRAS refinery Refinaria Presidente Getúlio Vargas-REPAR, located in Araucária, PR, Brazil. A significant quantity of oil was retained within an area known as Ponto 0, between the spill site and Rio Barigüi, contaminating the hanks of a small stream (Arroio Saldanha), the soil adjacent to the stream, and the soil of four small wetlands, over a distance of 2 km. This paper presents an overview of the remediation program for Ponto 0, and draws preliminary conclusions regarding the efficacy of different remediation technologies. The major remediation technologies are: 1) injection and recovery trenches for free-product recovery in the sector adjacent to the spill site; 2) in situ bioremediation along the floodplain of Arroio Saldanha; and 3) a treatment wetland near the discharge of Arroio Saldanha into Rio Barigüi. The trenches appear to have removed most of the free product from the sector adjacent to the spill site. There is preliminary evidence, based on soil monitoring data, for the efficacy of in situ bioremediation, but further data will be required before a firm conclusion can be drawn. The treatment wetland was successful in restoring wetland vegetation (an essential component of this technology), and appears to be capable of removing hydrocarbons from groundwater. Data of the groundwater monitoring program indicates a general decline in TPH concentrations, over the October 2000, August 2001 and April 2002 sampling campaigns. BTEX concentrations are generally below the method detection limit.

ABSTRACT This paper presents the results of the evaluation of contamination in the Saldanha Creek basin, caused by an oil spill at Refinaria Presidente Getúlio Vargas belonging to PETROBRAS, in Araucária – state of Paraná, which occurred on July 16, 2000. The oil reached Saldanha stream following 4 distinct paths and, over its course, overflowed the canal banks contaminating a total of 17.70 hectares of existing wetlands. The oil infiltration into the subsoil occurred in two main areas: (1) around the scraper, which is where most of the oil was infiltrated (approximately 43,000 liters of oil in free phase); (2) in Wetland 4, where the contaminant is mainly adsorbed to the soil particles. The characteristics of the former favor the implementation of a subsurface drainage system, with an oil separator. In the second, flooding the area would allow the removal of part of the contaminant by a difference of density, and part with a reactive barrier to which the groundwater flow would be induced.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to know 1) Types of moral aspects contained. 2) The dominant moral aspect is found. 3) Correlation of morality aspects with a sociological approach to literature. The research method used to analyze this film is a qualitative method that contains two elements, namely intrinsic elements in characters and characterizations as in morals through the approach of literary sociology. Based on the results of the study it can be concluded that 1) There are 7 moral aspects found in the “Ferdinand” film based on Michelle Borba's theory, namely Empathy, Conscience, Self-Control, Respect, Kindness, Tolerance, Justice. 2) The dominant moral aspects found were kindness (11 data), empathy (6 data), conscience (5 data), and self control (5 data). 3) the correlation of morality aspects with the approach of literary sociology, both of which highlight the conditions and social problems that are taking place in social life.

Full text
Abstract:
Protected areas for the South African rock lobster, Jasus lalandii, were sampled by using divers, traps and ringnets at sites within and adjacent to four protected areas (St Helena Bay, Saldanha Bay and Table Bay rock lobster sanctuaries and the Betty’s Bay marine reserve), over two years. Virtually no rock lobsters were found in St Helena Bay sanctuary, probably because of periodic harmful algal blooms. Abundance was greater in Saldanha Bay sanctuary than in adjacent fished areas, but only once in two years. Sizes were, however, larger in this sanctuary than the fished areas. By an order of magnitude, fewer and smaller rock lobsters were caught within the Table Bay sanctuary than in adjacent areas. Only at Betty’s Bay were rock lobster sizes and abundance consistently greater inside than outside the reserve. Fecundity was similar among sites, with females in protected areas contributing no more to egg production than would be expected by the proportional area occupied by protected areas. Rock lobsters do benefit from protection in Betty’s Bay reserve, but the west coast sanctuaries appear poorly located and seemingly contain large areas of unsuitable substrate. They clearly need relocation to be effective.
