This study was done to determine the effect of different seed priming methods on germination and seedling parameters of black gram. The experiment was laid out in Completely Randomized Design replicated thrice. Treatment combinations were; control (no priming), hydro priming, Osmo priming (PEG-10% and 20%), halo-priming (1% NaCl and 1% KNO3), and hormonal priming (Salicyclic acid 125ppm). For all treatments, seeds were soaked for 12 hours and dried in ambient conditions, and grown for 8 days at 24°C in a germinator, and readings were taken. AbstractThe present study was undertaken to develop a novel adsorbent for heavy metal ions, and this paper presents the synthesis and characterization of a composite material-silica gel microspheres encapsulated by salicyclic acid functionalized polystyrene (SG-PS-azo-SA) with a core-shell structure. SG-PS-azo-SA was used to investigate the adsorption of Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Fe(III), Hg(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), Cr(VI), Pd(II), Cu(II), Ag(I), and Au(III) from aqueous solutions. The results revealed that SG-PS-azo-SA has better adsorption capacity for Cu(II), Ag(I) and Au(III). Langmuir and Freun

Salicyclic acid (SA) is an important signalling molecule in plants that is involved in resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. I examined the effect of SA on induced thermotolerance and heat shock protein (HSP) gene expression in plants. At the beginning of this project a number of studies had already been carried out with animal cells that indicated a link between salicylates and heat shock. However, no similar studies had been conducted in plants. In this study I demonstrated that SA inhibits the acquisition of induced thermotolerance in tobacco (<I>Nicotiana tabacum</I> L.). Acne is a skin disease that affects most adolescents and young adults. There are four abnormalities in acne namely, sebum production, inflammation, hyperkeratosis and the presence of Propionobacterium acnes. To treat acne effectively it has been proved that combinational therapy is essential to be able to eliminate all four abnormalities. Both salicylic acid and tea tree oil have the properties to eliminate the four abnormalities of acne. These active ingredients were therefore chosen to be formulated into one cosmetic acne product. South Africa is the second largest exporter of citrus fruit in the world. There has recently emerged a strong demand for lemons in the world market due to their nutritional value, culinary and non-culinary uses. During exportation, fruit are subjected to low temperature (-0.5°C) for varying periods of time as an obligatory quarantine treatment. However, lemons are sensitive to low temperatures and easily develop chilling injury during this obligatory quarantine treatment. This has become a major limitation to the expansion of South Africa’s lemon industry. Postharvest treatments with methyl ja

Abstract Plants lack antibody-based immune systems, but they do have a robust system of defenses against pathogens. Constitutive defenses are a broad array of constitutively-produced physical structures and chemical compounds that protect most plants from infection by most pathogens. The three major groups of plant chemical defenses are phenolics, terpenoids, and the nitrogen-containing alkaloids and glucosinolates. Pathogens have evolved enzymes and specialized growth structures to overcome the constitutive defenses of their host plants. Inducible (or induced) defenses are produced in respons
