Abstract:
Salim Bachi, a contemporary Algerian author, is one of the most promising writers of his generation. In other books, he focuses on important historical events affecting the whole world, such as the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The purpose of our thesis is to analyze the different modalities (imaginary, stylistic, narrative) of the presence of History in the work of this author

Alnajdi, Abdullah Ahmad. "Shaikh Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah, 1895-1965." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/15340.

Full text
Abstract:
This is the first monograph-length academic study of Shaikh Abdullah al-Salim al-Sabah, Ruler of Kuwait between 1950 and 1965. It is based on British and US government records, interviews, and a wide range of secondary sources in Arabic and English. It traces the development of modern Kuwait from the mid-eighteenth century under the al-Sabah up to the accession of Shaikh Abdullah in 1950. It considers the succession question in Kuwait before 1950, and Abdullah’s lengthy period as a candidate for succession, which enabled him to develop and expand his ideas for his country before becoming ruler. The study also examines the way that Abdullah transformed Kuwait into the first rentier state in Eastern Arabia and analyses his impact on the development of Kuwait’s administrative system. The influence of Arab nationalism and Britain on his decision-making and his relationship with Arab nationalists and the British Government, as well as his subtle handling of Kuwait’s border dispute with Iraq, are also investigated in detail. This study focuses on the six major challenges that Abdullah overcame in order to transform Kuwait into a rentier state: (1) his political victories and defeats prior to his reign that shaped his political ideas, (2) his twenty-nine-year struggle to become ruler of Kuwait, (3) how he changed the direction of Kuwait’s development process by moving away from the politics of his predecessors, (4) his troubled relationship with the al-Sabah in Kuwait’s government administration, (5) how he dealt with the pressure exerted by Arab nationalists and the British Government on his political decisions, and (6) how he handled Kuwait’s troubled relationship with Iraq. This thesis argues that Shaikh Abdullah al-Salim al-Sabah was an exceptional leader not only among the rulers of Kuwait (1752 to present), but also among the rulers of the Gulf Arab states in general. He was the first ruler to introduce a rentier state system that provided extensive welfare services for all of his country’s citizens, securing his family’s position in government in the process. He led Kuwait to independence in 1961 and oversaw the drafting of its constitution in 1962. He was a skilled politician and diplomat, who negotiated a delicate balance between the competing interests of the Kuwaitis, the ruling family (the al-Sabah), the Arab nationalists, the British Government, and the Iraqi government. As a result, he has enjoyed a popularity within Kuwait second only to the founder of modern Kuwait, Shaikh Mubarak al-Sabah (r.1896-1915).

Salim, Sarel Frederik. "An assessment of brand loyalty of banking clients / Salim S.F." Thesis, North-West University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/7264.

Full text
Abstract:
This study measures brand loyalty of banking clients in South Africa. To do so, the study employs the newly developed brand loyalty conceptual framework of Moolla (2010) from the fast–moving consumer good industry as point of departure, and firstly, test its applicability to banking clients, secondly, adapt the framework where needed, and thirdly, used the adapted framework to measure the brand loyalty levels of the banking clients. The results show that the Moolla model could be used with minor adaptations in the banking industry, and that the reliability as measured by Cronbach alpha coefficients are acceptable. In measuring the brand loyalty levels, it is clear banking clients are not very loyal, scoring low on all the brand loyalty influences except customer satisfaction (which falls in the fair to good margin).
Thesis (M.B.A.)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012.

Hitti, Bassam Salim. "Effect of strain on muon diffusion and trapping in metal by Bassam Salim Hitti." W&M ScholarWorks, 1986. https://scholarworks.wm.edu/etd/1539623760.

Full text
Abstract:
Positive muons implanted in metal distort the surrounding lattice; therefore, in addition to electronic interactions, the elastic forces have to be considered in determining the muon state. to explore the elastic and electronic diffusion and trapping mechanisms, we studied AlCu(,420ppm), AlMg(,1000ppm) and AlAg(,1000ppm) alloys. These alloys were selected for the different effects on the host lattice of these impurities; Cu contracts the Al lattice, Mg expands it and Ag has nearly no effect. On the other hand Cu and Ag are monovalent while Mg is divalent. For AlCu between 5K and 14K the temperature exponent (beta) of the two-state-model trapping rate ((nu)(alpha)T('(beta))) was 0.93 (+OR-) .26 for zero field and 1.16 (+OR-) .14 for a 14.2G longitudinal field. A (beta) of 1 implies a one phonon induced diffusion process. For AlMg the transverse field (150G) second moment of the static random fields was 0.317 (+OR-) .007 (mu)s('-1) between 10K and 60K, 0.221 (+OR-) .013 (mu)s('-1) between 60K and 150K and 0.150 (+OR-) .013 (mu)s('-1) between 150K and 300K. The changing value of the second moment indicates a change in the muon trapping site from tetrahedral to octahedral to vacancy as the temperature is increased, this was confirmed at appropriate temperatures by zero and longitudinal field studies. Comparing the AlMg results with earlier work on AlCu two types of trapping sites can be identified, those dependent on the magnitude but not sign of deformation, and thought to be a few atomic distances away from the defect, and those which are possibly close to Mg. For AlAg, since Ag has almost no elastic effect the weaker depolarization structure suggests a different trapping mechanism, possibly due to the electronic interaction. to study the muon interaction with a uniform strain field, uniaxial stress was applied to an Fe (3 wt. % Si) single crystal. We measured the temperature dependence of the frequency shift versus strain to be -0.348 (+OR-) .007 MHz/100(mu)(epsilon) (25.7 (+OR-) .5 G.100(mu)(epsilon)) at 300K and -0.279 (+OR-) .010 MHz/100(mu)(epsilon) (20.6 (+OR-) .7 G/100(mu)(epsilon)) at 360K. The agreement of the room temperautre result with earlier work on pure Fe shows that these shifts are inherent to Fe and not impurity dependent. That the shifts are proportional to (1/T) confirms that these effects are dominated by a strain-induced-muon-population shifts between crystallographically equivalent but magnetically inequivalent sites.

Abstract:
Nur na escuridão (1999) tells the story of a Lebanese family that decides to leave their homeland and emigrate to the Americas, in order to find better living conditions. The crossing from this family between distinct worlds, as the East and West are, is constituted as indelible mark in the way of being and feeling from the characters and the narrator himself. In this scenario, crossing between worlds, cultures and traditions, it is inscribed the Salim Miguel s narrative, and their own life experience as an Arab immigrant. From these initial considerations, this dissertation sought to verify the role of narrator and his relationship with the memoirist discourse, as well as to examine, in the work, the interrelation of different literary genres such as (auto)biography, memories, biography and fiction itself.

Al-Hashimy, Sa'id b. Muhammad B. Said. "Imam Salim b. Rashid and the Imamate revival in Oman 1331/1913-1338/1920." Thesis, University of Leeds, 1994. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/3257/.

Full text
Abstract:
The principal aim of this thesis is to assess the performance of Imam Salim b.Rashid and the Imamate revival in Oman during the second decade of the 20th century. It presents biographical information about Imam Salim, with special reference to the military and political policies by which he established and consolided his Imamate in the Interior Province, and his relations with the Sultan and the latter's British supporters. An attempt is also made to explore the relationship between the Imam and the Omani tribes and to evaluate his administrative success. This thesis comprises eight chapters, and the introduction and conclusion. The introduction reviews the relevant literature on the topic. The first chapter describes the geographical setting and provides a historical background, relating to three principal matters: the rise of the Iba<;liyyah and the development of the Imamate in Oman; the events in Oman after Sd. Sa'id's death up to 1913; and the effects of the First World War. The second chapter seeks to give an account of the career of Imam Salim's life and the Imamate revival. The third chapter discusses the manner in which the Imam was elected, private and public allegiance (bay'ah) and the Imam's aims and policy programme. Chapter Four deals with the Imam's military operations and the spread of his authority over Oman. Chapter Five examines the attempts at negotiation between the Imam and the Sultan, and the role of the British Government and the local figures in this regard. Chapter Six is devoted to a discussion of the role of the tribes in support of Imam Salim, and the extent of the Imam's influence over these tribes. Chapter Seven assesses the Imam's administrative machinery, including the political system, the bureaucracy, education policy, and financial apparatus. Chapter Eight examines the causes behind the assassination of Imam Salim and the signing of the Treaty of al-Sib. In the conclusion, we present the findings of the research as they have emerged from the assessment of the course of events in Oman. We have said that the Omanis succeeded in reviving the Imamate and elected Imam Salim al-KharU~i who devoted his efforts to establish the foundations of the state, and peace prevailed in the country after the treaty of al-Sib in 1920.

Abstract:
In July 2008, Sakhalin Energy Investment Company (SEIC) had successfully retrofitted its SALM system offshore Sakhalin Island in the Russian Sea of Okhotsk following its Universal Joint (Uni-joint) connection failure in November 2007. This SALM system is part of the “Vityaz” Production Complex in which the produced oil is exported from the Piltun-Astokhskoye-A platform via a subsea pipeline and the SALM to the Okha floating storage and offloading (FSO) unit for subsequent loading onto tankers for delivery to customers. Yearly oil production using the SALM system starts normally in June and lasts till December, during the ice free period. Full year round production were planned using a pipeline replacement for the SALM system (on-stream early 2008). However, in the interim period, there was a significant production opportunity if the SALM could be reinstalled in time for the summer 2008 ice-free season. Another significant incentive for SEIC was an early gas flow through the offshore pipelines to the Onshore Processing Facility for commissioning purposes, which expedites first gas delivery for the whole project by an estimated 4 months. In order to make this production season possible, a unique and fast track project to reinstate the SALM was necessary. SEIC, Shell International E&P in Rijswijk and Single Buoy Moorings Inc. in Monaco, had jointly undertaken this project, incorporating proven engineering standards with an immense amount of creativity to meet these time constraints. The SALM project, that would normally take 2 years, has been hailed as a great success with design, fabrication and installation completed in just 7 months time. This paper describes the key challenges overcome to successfully deliver a fully working SALM system to an extreme time schedule. The emphasis is on a description of the technical challenges and the engineering repair solutions developed with reference to the constructibility, transportation, installation and operation. The challenges include: Re-engineering of the SALM Unijoint cast components to meet the limitations of the available foundries, implementation of a novel pull down installation method using a subsea linear winch, design and construction of independent contingency option, installation trials, worldwide logistics and project coordination. All these aspects form an integral part of the project execution strategy with prompt decision making to meet the required schedule.
