Abstract:

Abstract:
In this thesis, we intend to study the following topic: The poetic writing in West Africa. This involves a comparative analysis of the works of Tijan M. Sallah, a Gambian writer who writes in English and Amadou Lamine Sall, a Senegalese writer who writes in French. Our objective is particularly to study their works, extract their main features by linking them to their sociocultural environment through a comparative angle. To talk about writing is another way of merging two complementary elements which are content and form. Language is therefore that element of literature. Style is form, expression and content. Images, debit side, lexicon which are part of the body and the past of the writer gradually become the automatism of his art. Literature in general, and especially poetry, cannot merely be read as documents or simple messages. The transposition of referential elements in a writer’s work and the irruption of imagination make the work singular. This thesis also takes into consideration the role of the poet, that is to say the writer in general who is a witness to matters affecting humanity. Tijan M. Sallah and Amadou Lamine Sall, through their works, restore hope for a new world, a world where Justice, Freedom, Peace and Love will prevail forever. The powerful weapon to wage this revolution is Love

Dufresne, Lucie Marie-Mai. "The Salish Sxwaixwe in historic Salish society." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/10412.

Full text
Abstract:
The Sxwaixwe, a mask and cleansing rite of the Salish Indians of the Southern Northwest Coast, seems to have been in continuous production and use since the late 1700's. It has shown both consistency of underlying form and increased complexity and ambiguity of surface decoration probably resulting from an expansion of its use and the effects of contact with other cultural groups. An inherited and restricted family privilege, it continues to necessitate inter-kin group and gender co-operation for its production and use, thus serving to raise the owning group's status relative to non-owning groups and acting as an emergent crest for this group without affecting gender equality within the owning group. The proliferation of mask types, extension of the Sxwaixwe image to non-mask artifacts, and its expanding geographical distribution may be symptomatic of this developing group ranking. The examination of the Sxwaixwe according to Salish cultural patterns of ancestral benefactor, supernatural being, healer/transformer, male/female mediator, and bestower of wealth, worth, and ethnic identity demonstrates how its production and use is a means of manipulation and defining power, be it spiritual, political, economic or social. This examination of the Salish Sxwaixwe complex is based on an extensive inventory of museum collections, photographic and text archives, and an in depth analysis of the available written records. A typology of Sxwaixwe forms is included as well as an inventory of known Sxwaixwe objects and photographs.

Abstract:
This thesis presents the concept and the application of the otherness in the french writing Author Salah Stétié. Three topics are particularly covered : linguistic otherness, female otherness and cultural otherness. A theoretic study of the concept of otherness as well as an historic insight into the representation of the other are the subject of the preliminaries. The first part is devoted to the study of the identity components of the poet : Lebanon, the Arabo-muslim culture and the Mediterranean. It shows how these components are related to the meeting of the other in East but also in Occident (countries) creating the composite of the Poet. The linguistic identity is the subject of the second part. Here we study the conditions which made that French language become the favourite mean of expression of the poet and how he proceeds to reconcile identity and otherness in this “foreign” language. The third part is devoted to the application of the otherness. We first analyze here how S. Stétié represents female otherness as well as social and literary influences. Secondly, we study his application of the cultural otherness. The cultural interbreeding and the mediation are the broad axis of our reflection. During this study, comparisons are brought together with other poets and writers to show that the works of S. STétié are at the same time original and open

Abstract:

Thompson, James J. "Syntactic nominalization in Halkomelem Salish." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/42183.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is a detailed exploration of two constructions in Halkomelem Salish – Predicate Nominalization and Clausal Nominalization – which I group together as syntactic nominalization. I use these terms throughout to refer to the particular operations, and refer to the results of those operations as nominalized predicates and nominalized clauses, respectively. The two constructions examined here share some nominal morphological features. Both possess an /s-/ nominalizer, identical in shape with the nominalizer used to create (theme) participant nominals. Possessive agreement morphology appears in both nominalized predicates and nominalized clauses, indexing the highest argument in each. Despite these surface similarities and a common source, I argue that these two operations are synchronically distinct, and, as a corollary, that they are formed with distinct, homophonous nominalizers. In Chapter 3, I address predicate nominalization, which is used to create a predicate whose subject is interpreted as the theme of the non-nominalized predicate. I argue that predicate nominalization forms a reduced relative clause at the edge of the thematic domain, with the nominalizer functioning as a relative pronoun. I further argue that the nominalizer projects after remerge, thus creating a constituent with the internal structure of a relative clause and the external distribution of an NP. In Chapter 4, I argue that clausal nominalization forms a defective CP, which is used as the default embedded clause and as the dependent clause(s) in a clause chain. I analyze nominalizer in clausal nominalization as a complementizer that cannot convey illocutionary force. My analysis captures the fact that nominalized clauses have the formal properties and distribution of clauses rather than DPs, along with their embedded and clause-chaining uses. I take a cross-Salish perspective in Chapter 5, showing how attested variation within the family is compatible with my analyses.

Abstract:
Most frequently enunciated as a questioning the notion of identity appears only when an interrogation such as "Who am I?" becomes even conceivable. Thus any reflection on the issue of identity involves an inquiry into the conditions of emergence of this questioning. Considered in the multi-faceted Palestinian context, this concept is particularly complex because of its political ramifications and its national and collective dimensions. Facing the Zionist project that claimed Palestine (supposedly a land without people) as the land of return for the Jews (a people without a land), the Palestinians had to face a denial of their existence that is rare in modern history. The creation of the state of Israel in 1948 (the Nakba for the Palestinians), expelled more than 700.000 Palestinians in the neighboring Arab countries of Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria, transforming them into refugees who also had to face the societies of their host countries. This situation sharpened the Palestinians' conception of national identity and their awareness as a people even in the absence of an official state. The books by Elias Sanbar and Racha Salah that this dissertation examines share not only a historical background but a vision of a distinct Palestinian identity in which, I contend, collective memory and lieux de mémoire (Pierre Nora) play a crucial role. Yet in many ways these works are also strikingly different. The main objective of this dissertation is to study their respective representation of the Palestinian struggle to preserve and consolidate a particular identity as well as demonstrate how the particular literary forms they use are integral to the struggle they depict. Chapter I sets the historical and socio-political framework: Going back to the period when the fall of the Ottoman Empire was followed by the British mandate on Palestine, it analyzes the ways in which Palestinian nationalism developed in contending with both the British colonization and the Zionist ambition of establishing a Jewish national homeland. Chapter II considers several 20th-century theories on nationalism (by Ernest Gellner, Eric Hobsbawm, Benedict Anderson and Anthony Smith, among others) to assess the light that they help shed on the "Palestinian question" and its specificity. Chapter III first investigates the three historical periods whereby Elias Sanbar (a celebrated, second-generation Palestinian who lived mostly in exile in Europe) constructs the Palestinian identity in his socio-political essay entitled Figures du Palestinien. Identité des origines, identité de devenir; the second part of this chapter shows how Le bien des absents, in resorting to the different mode of biography (unusual in Sanbar's production) and a nonlinear narrative mode, builds upon various "sites of memory" and cultural artifacts to shape its representations of Palestinian identity. Chapter IV is devoted to Racha Salah's L'an prochain à Tibériade. Lettres d'une jeune palestinienne du Liban. It examines the situation of refugee camps and more specifically Salah’s representation of the camp within a host country in which she was brought up as a third-generation Palestinian refugee. This chapter shows how, paradoxically, this situation of near-detention enabled her persona to distance herself from the official discourse, not only to develop her own hopeful, yet sometimes disenchanted, vision of a reunified Palestinian nation but also to question, through the specific genre of epistolary fiction, the role and responsibility of the Western world in the "Palestinian question." Overall, this dissertation also seeks to draw attention to the important contribution made to the Palestinian cause by Francophone Palestinian writers (and Francophone studies scholars in general).

Abstract:
There is a triple analytical interest into poetic work of the lebanese french speaking poet. Mythical or mythological elements evoke the common genuine content of the work. This work is built on three main elements : the myth of the Tree, Graeco-roman legend and biblical and koranic narratives. In this way, we will show how Salah Stétié brayght up to date some complex legend topics. Thus, these writings are rooted in history, thaht is to say in a space and time context. Insertion into space and time is made clearer by using the je poétique and by the developement of the relations to women subject. Salah Stétié suggests an authentic individualization with a picture network. But soon, the violence of the writings will urge to go in search of a balance. That's why mystical perceptions prolong the quest. To reach this aim, philosophical and religious thought from Occident and Orient (characteristic of Judaeo-Christianism and Islam) are closely imbricated and have permited to built an original thought. Lastly, it seems thaht the discovery of a kind of perfect humanism and confirmation of wonder are exactly illustrating the harmony of Stétié's thought

Abstract:
This study addresses the question of the nature of indigenous people's connection to the land, and the implications of this for articulating these connections in legal arenas where questions of Aboriginal title and land claims are at issue. The idea of 'place' is developed, based in a phenomenology of dwelling which takes profound attachments to home places as shaping and being shaped by ontological orientation and social organization. In this theory of the 'senses of place', the author emphasizes the relationships between meaning and power experienced and embodied in place, and the social systems of property and territory that forms indigenous land tenure systems. To explore this theoretical notion of senses of place, the study develops a detailed ethnography of a Coast Salish Aboriginal community on southeast Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Through this ethnography of dwelling, the ways in which places become richly imbued with meanings and how they shape social organization and generate social action are examined. Narratives with Coast Salish community members, set in a broad context of discussing land claims, provide context for understanding senses of place imbued with ancestors, myth, spirit, power, language, history, property, territory and boundaries. The author concludes in arguing that by attending to a theorized understanding of highly local senses of place, nuanced conceptions of indigenous relationships to land which appreciate indigenous relations to land in their own terms can be articulated.

Abstract:
Abstract Salla disease (SD) is a rare lysosomal storage disorder, belonging to the Finnish disease heritage. The condition leads to intellectual disabilities. Two main categories of the disease have been identified – a conventional subtype and a severe subtype. The gene locus of SD has been assigned to a restricted region on the long arm of chromosome 6. The gene SLC17A5 is responsible for lysosomal-membrane sialic acid transport. The objective of this study was to describe the neurocognitive developmental spectrum of SD in a long follow-up study. In the original study (1997–1999), the sample consisted of 41 Finnish patients with Salla disease. They were examined by a paediatric neurologist, a psychologist and a speech therapist. The follow-up study (2010–2012) concerned of 27 (66%) patients from the original SD patient sample. The study included neurological and neuropsychological investigations. A case study of a mildly affected female patient was also reported. In the first study, the typical neurocognitive profile of SD was outlined and the different phenotypes confirmed. The neurocognitive profile of SD consisted of a strong motor handicap, but also well-developed skills in verbal comprehension and interaction. In the follow-up study, the main finding was that the verbal skills related to comprehension did not diminish over time. However, the skills that demanded productive speech were worsened by both dyspraxia and dysarthria, markers of dysfunction of the cerebellum. The neurocognitive and neurological status of the mildly affected female patient remained stable during the long follow-up time. In addition the MRI findings revealed mild dysfunction. The results indicate that the neurocognitive deficits related to SD are clear in childhood, but the illness does not have a rapid progressive nature after teenage years. The motor handicap is strong but the cognitive skills related to verbal comprehension, and interactive skills, do not deteriorate in adulthood. Four different neurodevelopmental periods can be outlined
Sallan taudin aiheuttavan geenin sijainti on paikallistettu kromosomiin 6. SLC17A5-geeni vastaa sialihapon kuljetuksesta solujen lysosomeissa. Ensimmäisen tutkimuksen (1997–1999) aineisto koostui 41 suomalaisesta Sallan tautia sairastavasta potilaasta. Neurologi, psykologi sekä puheterapeutti tutkivat jokaisen potilaan. Seuranta-aineisto (2010–2012) koostui 27 (66 %) potilaasta. Tutkimukseen kuului neurologin sekä neuropsykologin tutkimus. Lieväoireisen naispotilaan kehityskulku julkaistiin erillisenä tapaustutkimuksena. Ensimmäisessä tutkimuksessa selvitettiin Sallan taudille ominainen neurokognitiivinen profiili, lisäksi vahvistettiin kahden eri fenotyypin olemassaolo.

Khodr, Fadi. "Pour une archéocritique du texte poétique contemporain. Yves Bonnefoy, Salah Stétié et Adonis." Thesis, Sorbonne Paris Cité, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016USPCA001.

Full text
Abstract:
Studies on the poetic writings of Yves Bonnefoy, Salah Stétié and Adonis did not really manage to provide a practical decoding model. This is mainly due to their confinement hermeneutics. Far from us to oppose these studies, we intend to complete or reorient them. In order to fill the gaps that remain and try to access to the meaning, we propose a new approach that draws on archaeological methods and is able to federate other critical approaches for the sole purpose of a better understanding of the figural at work in the literary text. As a prospection, we choose to analyze three poems referring explicitly to archaeological remains or ancient cities. This introductory part which may be considered as a study of archaeology in the imagination shows us the need to operate archaeology of the imagination to lay the foundations of archaeocriticism. A rescue excavation of some poems of Adonis, mostly from his collection "Singuliers", plans to offer a new reading redirecting articles and studies published about them. However, the section on the work of Salah Stétié adopts a rather extensive excavation in order to illuminate new facets remained in the shadow. Over the chapters, and particularly from the analysis of the poem “Le K”, archaeocriticism allows gradually elucidate the main issue of the ontological quest by clearing “cultural interferences” posed by the background-texts detected. Finally, “the translation writ large” illustrated in a poem by Yves Bonnefoy calls us to a careful reading of another poem in which it is explicitly question of translation. One of the background-text of the poem urges us to reread “La longue chaîne de l’ancre (Ales Stenar)” already analyzed in the beginning of our work, in order to validate certain assumptions and conjectures. Thus, this study – in which many passages intersect the texts of the three poets and others – leads to discover ontological strata of each poet work, and to draft an archaeocritic terminology

Abstract:
In recent years, much has been written about the changing relationships between museum professionals and First Nations. However, most of these accounts have been authored by the former group, while First Nations perspectives are conveyed through second hand accounts or less frequently the writings of indigenous scholars and artists. This thesis explores another type of viewpoint by presenting perspectives shared by individuals living and working in Coast Salish communities in Canada and the United States. The intent is to gain a clearer picture of something that has been referred to as the “democratization of the museum” by Canadian museum professionals such as Duncan Cameron (1982). Has access to museums and their resources dramatically increased? Is this reflected in current museum practice, exhibits, and public programs? To better understand the current status of community and museum partnerships I explore what drives Coast Salish communities to participate in museum representations (and other public commemorations). I also discuss some of the legal implications such representations have for establishing or defending aboriginal rights and title. From this vantage point I proceed to explore specific museum projects and partnerships, analysing the diverse experiences of those Coast Salish individuals who were invited and then chose to participate in this research project. A critique of museums results, but it is presented with the intent of providing a moment of reflexivity – an opportunity to re-evaluate current museum and community interactions, so that we can take another step forward on the path to equal partnership.

Omar, Rahilah. "The history of Boné A.D. 1775-1795 : the diary of Sultan Ahmad as-Salleh Syamsuddin." Thesis, University of Hull, 2003. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:5502.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis uses an interdisciplinary approach, combining the findings of anthropology with historical and archival research, to evaluate Bugis diaries to provide historical information relating to the kingdom of Boné in the late eighteenth century. The diary of Sultan Ahmad as-Salleh, which covers the period 1775 to 1795, forms the primary material for the study, and is examined alongside other, selected Bugis diaries. The first three chapters form the conceptual framework against which the Bugis diary must be understood. The methodology is set out in Chapter One. The second chapter provides historical, geographical and ethnological information about South Sulawesi; it introduces the Bugis and the regency of Boné, and discusses Bugis written tradition and the knowledge it reflects. Chapter Three is concerned with the Bugis language, its origin and the development of the written script. The specificity of the Bugis diaries as a distinct category of indigenous written works is discussed. Chapters Four, Five and Six apply the methodology to the diary of Sultan Ahmad as-Salleh, cross-referencing its entries to other contemporary primary sources. Throughout, the function of the court diary is considered, and its limitations, most notably concerning the objectivity, are identified and discussed. Chapter Four examines the political life of Boné, the most powerful and important of the Bugis kingdoms of South Sulawesi in the eighteenth century. Centering on particular episodes that occurred during his reign, the reliability of the king's diary is tested. In Chapter Five, information from the diary is used to produce an account of the economy of Boné and to describe a number of traditional economic practices of the inner circle at court. Chapter Six analyses what can be learned from his diary of the diverse social, cultural and religious practices in which the king was involved. Chapter Seven, in conclusion, reflects on the character of Sultan Ahmad as-Salleh, who ruled Boné from 1775 until his death in 1812. No physical memory of him has survived in South Sulawesi. His memorial is his diary and the light that it sheds on Boné's past.

Lindgren, Lisa.

Full text
Abstract:
Cadmium, lead and arsenic are critical metal(oid)s for human health due to consumption of vegetables from the Kingdom of Crystal in Sweden and other contaminated sites. Root uptake from pore water is the dominant pathway for metals in crops. To assess the concentration of contaminants in vegetables the soil concentration can be used in association with crop bio concentration factor (BCF). The BCF shows the ratio between the concentration of a certain contaminant in the vegetable and the soil concentration. Soil concentration values, however, depend on extraction method. In Swedish risk assessments for contaminated sites The Environmental Protection Agency uses generic BCF values. But metal uptake varies and these BCF values are not constant for a specific metal in a specific vegetable. This work is a literature study in uptake of cadmium, lead and arsenic in lettuce and potatoes. Bio concentration factors for these elements show great variety in literature and in data from Kingdom of Crystal. The uptake depends on plant specific characteristics and total metal burden in soil but is affected also by other factors. Controlling bioavailability through solubility makes pH the most crucial environmental factor. Metal uptakes dependence on environmental factors and the great variability in BCFs shows shortcomings in reliability for the use of generic BCFs.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Kiyota, Masaru. "Situation aspect and viewpoint aspect : from Salish to Japanese." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/586.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates lexical and grammatical aspect in two unrelated languages, Sencoten(the Saanich dialect of Straits Salish) and Japanese. In particular, the main focus is on how various perfect readings are derived in the two languages, which show striking similarities in this respect. In Sencoten, a particle kwlh yields various readings depending on the situation aspect and viewpoint aspect of the predicate with which it occurs (Kiyota 2006b). These various readings include an inceptive reading, an on-going situation reading, and a completion reading. The Japanese aspectual marker -tei- also induces a range of different readings: a progressive reading, a resultant state reading, and a perfect reading (Ogihara 1998a, Nishiyama 2006, a.o.). To account for these various readings, I propose that both kwlh in Sencoten and -tei- in Japanese are perfect markers. However, the actual semantic function of each is different: kwlh in Sencoten introduces a perfect time span (Pancheva 2003), whereas -tei- in Japanese denotes an anteriority relation between an event time and a reference time (Reichenbach 1947, Klein 1992, 1994), where the event time can be the time interval of a sub-event of a larger event. -Tei- also has a pragmatic component (or presupposition), just as Portner (2003) claims for the English perfect. Aspectual properties of predicates also play a crucial role in yielding the range of different readings. Therefore, this thesis also proposes a new aspectual classification of predicates in Sencoten and Japanese, which departs from the common classification of predicates based on Indo-European languages. In Sencoten, various readings are derived by interaction between the semantics of verbal predicates (i.e. lexical aspect), the semantics of the grammatical aspect (perfective or imperfective), and the semantics (and possibly pragmatics) of the perfect. In Japanese, the range of interpretations is due to interaction between the semantics of verbal aspect, the function of an adverb, and the semantics and pragmatics of the perfect. In other words, the same factors enter into my analysis of both Sencoten and Japanese, though there is one striking difference between the two languages: the perfective/imperfective opposition is involved in Sencoten, but not in Japanese.

Koch, Karsten. "Intonation and Focus in Nte?kepmxcin (Thompson River Salish)." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/2848.

Full text
Abstract:
In this dissertation, I examine the marking of focus and givenness in Nte?kepmxcin (Thompson River Salish). The focus is, roughly, the answer to a wh-question, and is highlighted by the primary sentential accent in stress languages like English. This has been formalized as the Stress-Focus Correspondence Principle. Given material is old information, and is de-accented in languages like English. Nte?kepmxcin is a stress language, but marks focus structurally. However, I argue that the structure has a prosodie motivation: the clause is restructured such that the focus is leftmost in the intonational phrase. It follows that Salish focus structures lack the special semantics that motivates the use of English structural focus (clefts). As a theoretical contribution, I show that the Stress-Focus Correspondence Principle does not account for focus marking in all stress languages, nor does the "distress-given" generalization account for the marking of given information. This is because focus surfaces leftmost, while the nuclear stress position is rightmost. Instead of "stress-focus", I propose that alignment with prosodie phrase edges is the universally common thread in focus marking. This mechanism enables listeners to rapidly recover the location of the focus, by identifying coarse-grained phonological categories (p-phrases and i-phrases). In Thompson River Salish, the focus is associated with the leftmost p-phrase in the matrix intonational phrase. The analysis unifies the marking of focus across languages by claiming that focus is always marked prosodically, by alignment to a prosodie category. The study combines syntactic analysis of focus utterances with their phonetic realization and semantic characteristics. As such, this dissertation is a story about the interfaces. This research is based on a corpus of conversational data as well as single sentence elicitations, all of which are original data collected during fieldwork. The second contribution of this dissertation is thus methodological: I have developed various fieldwork techniques for collecting both spontaneous and scripted conversational discourses. The empirical contribution that results is a collection of conversational discourses, to add to the single speaker traditional texts already recorded for Nte?kepmxcin.

This research focuses on the recognition of the importance and the need for emphasis on form readers of movies that they can find a common thread to understand the universe. The use of cinema as educational practice significantly facilitates the dialogue between curriculum content and the more general knowledge. The analysis of images and tools used by seventh art contribute to the development of critical understanding of the world and new forms of entertainment and thus the formation of the citizen. From the problematization of the cinema as able to transform the spectator into player and bolstered by theoretical supports Rosalia Duarte, Jacques Aumont and Robert Stam, among others, this research seeks to introduce paths for a pedagogical practice involving the film and school. In addition, presents a significant set of discussions and ideas that allow the formation of the reader, from a phenomenological analysis of tree films by Walter Salles, "Foreign Land" (1995), "Central of Brazil" (1998) and "Behind the Sun" (2001), as well as comment from other directors who influenced the field of film studies, art, culture and aesthetics. This dissertation seeks a response of dimensions that this theme, the cinema, has influenced the formation of the reader, search also the expansion of the concept of reading from a cinematic experience where the Viewer is participatory and recognize the language tags and the knowledge gained throughout their schooling. Search still incorporate the art of cinema to the cultural repertoire of the spectator, increasing, so your potential in a critical and reflective stance in life.

Our goal is to reach the comprehension on how a documentary filmmaker turns into a cinematographic author, by analyzing his or her film`s characters. We believe that, in observing the construction of these narrative existents, one can identify some of the processes that lead to the film director’s manifested personal style, guaranteeing him or her a author status. This research`s object is the work of João Moreira Salles, one of Brazil’s most distinguished documentary filmmakers. We will investigate three selected scenes from Nelson Freire (2003), Entreatos (2004) and Futebol`s third chapter (1998). Our major interest in each segment is to observe the main characters and the traits that compose them, is to say, the actions and habits one can perceive on these existents through the narrative structrures. Our approach on the object is modeled by film analysis, following the scene description instruments proposed by Aumont and Marie. Serving as a guide to this observation, three typologies were defined: these are recurrent types that can bring a better comprehension on certain phenomenons connected to the research’s object. The typologies – character, nomadism and authorship – were conceived from a selection of ideas we consider fundamental in the investigation’s purposes and its chosen theme and objects.

Abstract:
In this thesis, I examine circulating discourses of “women’s empowerment” in Dar es Salaam, one of Africa’s urban epicentres of NGOization. Through the ethnographic fieldwork that I conducted in Dar es Salaam’s NGO sphere from May to August of 2016, I illustrate why development critique and intersectional feminisms must emphasize agency and variation, and avoid falling into binaries and Eurocentrism. Based on participant observation in “local” and “expat” circles, and formal interviews with Tanzanian NGO workers, I address the following questions: how does development discourse in Tanzania use tropes of women’s empowerment? Whom do these discourses serve? In what ways do participants’ comments on development speak to their geopolitical locations, race, class and gendered positionalities? I argue that “empowerment” language is easily co-opted to obscure structural inequalities among international and local agents, as well as the state and its citizenry. I caution against simplistic and prescriptive applications of critiques of “Western” development activities and white liberal feminism in an analysis of how empowerment discourse too often produces narrow images of power, recognizing that empowerment discourses are strategically activated within differing contexts and must be examined in their particularities.

Brighouse, Jean Alison. "Coast Salish children's narratives : structural analysis from three perspectives." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/28923.

Full text
Abstract:
Narratives serve many functions within a given cultural group. As well as reflecting and transmitting the social values of that group, narratives provide children with a cognitive framework that is an important factor in the learning process. Although the structure of narratives has been described for mainstream children, there is some debate as to whether different cultures share the same narrative structure. A culturally-based difference in narrative structure may contribute to the fact that Native Indian children (as well as children from other minority cultures) are overrepresented among those children who have difficulty in school. The present study set out to investigate whether there was a discernable difference in the structure of narratives told by five Coast Salish children aged 5;0 -8;6 and those told by mainstream children reported in the narrative development research literature. Two types of narratives (personal experience and fictional) were collected and analyzed according to three analysis procedures: high point analysis, which emphasizes evaluation of events; episodic analysis, which emphasizes goal-based action; and poetic analysis, which emphasizes the poetic form of the narratives. The high point analysis revealed that the Coast Salish children ordered events in their stories in a different order than mainstream children do. Both the high point and the episodic analyses showed that the Coast Salish children expressed relationships between events implicitly more frequently than mainstream children. The poetic analysis was the most revealing of potential intercultural differences. This analysis revealed that falling intonation, grammatic closure, lexical markers and shifts in perspective (reference, action, focused participant, time frame, comment, etc.) defined structural units in the narratives of the Coast Salish children. This evidence of structural unit markers was consistent with predictions based on research by Scollon & Scollon (1981, 1984). The results of this investigation have implications for educators and speech-language pathologists in their interaction with Native Indian children. In addition, the results provide a useful indication of the necessary considerations and appropriate procedures for carrying out a more focused study of the narratives of a larger group of Native Indian children.
