Abstract:

Abstract:
Background and objective: The antisecretory factor (AF) exerts antisecretory and anti-inflammatory properties in the bowel. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of exogenous AF (Salovum) or cereals stimulating the endogenous AF (SPC-Flakes), given alone or in combination, in patients with short bowel syndrome (SBS). Methods: Patients received Salovum alone at T0 -T1, Salovum plus SPC-Flakes at T1 -T2, and SPC-Flakes alone at T2 -T3. At T0 and T3, water balance, weight, lean mass (FFM), total body water (TBW), extracellular water (ECW), and nutritional and inflammatory biochemical parameters were evaluated. The water balance was also measured at T1, T2, and 30 days (TS) from the end of treatment. Results: Among the 7 patients enrolled, 2 discontinued treatment due to side effects and 1 was excluded after a cancer was diagnosed. Salovum alone or with SPC-Flakes did not improve the intestinal absorption in patients with SBS, while the administration of SPC-Flakes alone lead towards a trend of increased faecal volume. Weight, FFM, TBW, and ECW, as well as nutritional and inflammatory status, did not statistically change at the end of treatment (T3) as compared with T0. At TS water balance was restored. Conclusion: The administration of exogenous AF or the stimulation of endogenous AF seems to be unable to offer an effective therapy in patients with SBS. On the contrary, their administration appears to aggravate fluid loss and induce side effects.

Abstract:
Consumption of mugilids is widespread in Senegal, especially in the estuaries, where there production is of economic importance. The prevalence, mean intensity and pathologic effects of Anisakis sp. and Contracaecum sp. larvae which infected mugilids from Senegalese estuaries were investigated. In 2009, individuals of mugilids belonging to 6 and 5 species were trapped from the estuaries of Saloum, Senegal and Casamance rivers respectively. The prevalence and mean intensity of Anisakis sp. and Contracaecum sp. are higher in Senegal and Saloum estuaries respectively. The increase in the load of Contracaecum sp., related to the season in L. falcipinnis, the season, the size, the weight and/or the sex in M. cephalus from the estuaries of Saloum and Senegal and M. curema from Saloum estuary were due to an accumulation of parasites over time. Liver, kidney, body cavity and mesentery and ovaries are the respective sites of infection of Anisakis sp. and Contracaecum sp. larvae. The immune response observed is the formation of a fibrous capsule surrounding the parasites with melanin granules all around the capsule. The implementation of the capsule and the presence of melanin granules suggest the involvement of lymphocytes, monocytes, neutrophils and macrophages. The lesions caused by Anisakis sp. and Contracaecum sp. larval settlement in target organs may cause the death of the host and/or a reduction in fertility.

Abstract:
Mugil curema, known as white mullet, was one of the fish species encountered in the fisheries landings of the Saloum Delta. In this study, the morphometric parameters and the reproductive biology of this species were studied as well as the influence of environmental parameters on its reproduction. Experimental fisheries were carried out monthly in the Saloum Delta. The fish were caught using surface drift nets. The captured individuals were measured and weighed. The gonads were collected to determine the sex and the stages of sexual maturity. Out of a total of 406 individuals sampled in the Saloum Delta, 306 females and 100 males were identified, no individuals of undetermined sex were obtained. The sex ratio was globally in favor of females. Individuals in this study ranged in size from 102 to 385 mm and weight from 34.9 to 395 g. The allometric coefficient b was equal to 2.40 and indicated a negative allometry. The exploitation of the monthly IGS results indicated that reproduction was in April, May and June. The size at first sexual maturity indicated that the males matured at a size of 220 mm, lower than that of the females 226 mm.

Abstract:
The mangrove areas in Senegal have fluctuated considerably over the last few decades, and it is therefore important to monitor the evolution of forest cover in order to orient and optimise forestry policies. This study presents a method for mapping plant formations to monitor and study changes in zonation within the mangroves of Senegal. Using Landsat ETM+ and Landsat 8 OLI images merged to a 15-m resolution with a pansharpening method, a processing chain that combines an OBIA approach and linear spectral unmixing was developed to detect changes in mangrove zonation through a diachronic analysis. The accuracy of the discriminations was evaluated with kappa indices, which were 0.8 for the Saloum delta and 0.83 for the Casamance estuary. Over the last 20 years, the mangroves of Senegal have increased in surface area. However, the dynamics of zonation differ between the two main mangrove hydrosystems of Senegal. In Casamance, a colonisation process is underway. In the Saloum, Rhizophora mangle is undergoing a process of densification in mangroves and appears to reproduce well in both regions. Furthermore, this study confirms, on a regional scale, observations in the literature noting the lack of Avicennia germinans reproduction on a local scale. In the long term, these regeneration gaps may prevent the mangrove from colonising the upper tidal zones in the Saloum. Therefore, it would be appropriate to redirect conservation policies towards reforestation efforts in the Saloum rather than in Casamance and to focus these actions on the perpetuation of Avicennia germinans rather than Rhizophora mangle, which has no difficulty in reproducing. From this perspective, it is necessary to gain a more in-depth understanding of the specific factors that promote the success of Avicennia germinans seeding.

Abstract:
Recently, many users prefer online shopping to purchase items from the web. Shopping websites allow customers to submit comments and provide their feedback for the purchased products. Opinion mining and sentiment analysis are used to analyze products’ comments to help sellers and purchasers decide to buy products or not. However, the nature of online comments affects the performance of the opinion mining process because they may contain negation words or unrelated aspects to the product. To address these problems, a semantic-based aspect level opinion mining (SALOM) model is proposed. The SALOM extracts the product aspects based on the semantic similarity and classifies the comments. The proposed model considers the negation words and other types of product aspects such as aspects’ synonyms, hyponyms, and hypernyms to improve the accuracy of classification. Three different datasets are used to evaluate the proposed SALOM. The experimental results are promising in terms of Precision, Recall, and F-measure. The performance reaches 94.8% precision, 93% recall, and 92.6% f-measure.

Abstract:
In West Africa, as in many other estuaries, enormous volumes of marine water are entering the continent. Fresh water discharge is very low, and it is commonly strongly linked to rainfall level. Some of these estuaries are inverse estuaries. During the Great Sahelian Drought (1968–1993), their hyperhaline feature was exacerbated. This paper aims to describe the evolution of the two main West African inverse estuaries, those of the Saloum River and the Casamance River, since the end of the drought. Water salinity measurements were carried out over three to five years according to the sites in order to document this evolution and to compare data with the historical ones collected during the long dry period at the end of 20th century. The results show that in both estuaries, the mean water salinity values have markedly decreased since the end of the drought. However, the Saloum estuary remains a totally inverse estuary, while for the Casamance River, the estuarine turbidity maximum (ETM) is the location of the salinity maximum, and it moves according to the seasons from a location 1–10 km downwards from the upstream estuary entry, during the dry season, to a location 40–70 km downwards from this point, during the rainy season. These observations fit with the functioning of the mangrove, the West African mangrove being among the few in the world that are markedly increasing since the beginning of the 1990s and the end of the dry period, as mangrove growth is favored by the relative salinity reduction. Finally, one of the inverse estuary behavior factors is the low fresh water incoming from the continent. The small area of the Casamance and Saloum basins (20,150 and 26,500 km² respectively) is to be compared with the basins of their two main neighbor basins, the Gambia River and the Senegal River, which provide significant fresh water discharge to their estuary.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In an agro-ecosystem, phosphorus (P) is found in organic and an inorganic form which includes soluble P, sorbed P and mineral bounded P. In soil, added P sources undergo various soil processes like mineralization, immobilization, precipitation, weathering, dissolution, sorption and desorption. For understanding the P dynamics in clay loam (Vertic Ustropept) soil, the present study was undertaken in P dynamics under rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere environment of maize in Long Term Fertilizer Experiment at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. The results revealed that the fractions of various pools of inorganic NaOH extractable Fe - P, H2SO4 extractable Ca- P, NH4F extractable Al- P, NH4Cl extractable Saloid P and Na citrate - Dithionate extractable Reductant soluble P were dominant in the non-rhizospheric soil than rhizospheric environment. The order of inorganic P fractions in the non-rhizospheric and rhizospheric region of the soil was found as Ca-P > Fe-P > Al-P > Reductant soluble-P > Saloid P and the knee-high stage of the non - rhizosphere soil recorded the highest inorganic as well organic P fractions. Irrespective of P fractions, Ca – P was recorded high (192.5 & 186.7 mg kg-1 ) followed by Fe - P (40.8& 34.9 mg kg-1) at a knee-high stage in non-rhizosphere and rhizosphere, respectively. Practising various nutrient management systems, application of 100% recommended dose of fertilizer along with FYM @ 10 t ha-1 (T8) recorded significant changes in all inorganic (Ca-P, Fe-P, Al-P, Reductant soluble-P, Saloid P), organic fractions and also Total P followed by 150% NPK (T3) in sandy clay loam soil. Nowadays, increasing demand for P fertilizer in India, judicious use of P fertilizer is important. Despite that, intensively cultivated soils have a lot of P reserves like organic and inorganic P pools and effective way of P transformation management could reduce the quantum of P fertilization in soil.

Abstract:
AbstractThe 2250 km2 Saloum delta, south of Dakar, Senegal, consists of a Holocene sedimentary sequence deposited during five evolutionary stages: submerged postglacial ria, funnel-like estuary, barred estuary, cuspate delta, and reverse estuary. The passage from one stage to another was marked by the deposition of sedimentary units consisting of shelly sands, silty or sandy clays, and an extensive thick green mud. Muds in the lower strata, dating between 6130 and 3500 yr B.P., were deposited on a subtidal mudflat, while fine sands and silty clays characterize intertidal deposits. A drastic change in sedimentation patterns, resulting in the accumulation of a series of beach barriers, likely was associated with a major climatic change. The regional climate was then very dry, and silt and sand were trapped in the water behind the barriers in two stages, from 1990 to 1510 and 1020 to 600 yr B.P. Each event was accompanied by construction of shell middens that demonstrate the presence of humans who exploited newly available shallows and banks. Relative sea level did not change significantly between 6000 yr B.P. and the present. Morphological and sedimentological changes observed in the late Holocene sequences were apparently induced by a constraining climatic background.

Abstract:
The sequencing and availability of inorganic and organic fractions of phosphorus at different days interval in two soils after the fertilizer (SSP) application was the objective of this investigation. The study helped to obtain the sequence of dominating pool of phosphorus at different days intervals and the rate of release in the soil. This sequential fractionation was used for two native soils i) Alluvial soil and ii) Acidic soil, with 0 to 80 ppm SSP/ 100 gm soil added in a pot experiment and the soil samples were analyzed at different days intervals started from 5 days to 60 days. The result revealed that amount of maximum total P fell in the range from 325.14 to 387.30 mg kg-1 and 284.60 to 330.25 mg kg-1 for alluvial soil and acid soil, respectively up to 30 days. In case of inorganic P fractions under alluvial soil the dominating species were like Ca-P > Fe-P > Al-P >Saloid-P, while under acidic soil the following order Fe-P > Al-P > Ca-P > Saloid-P was observed. These two observations also drew the concentration of organic-P fractions in soil. The work concluded that the availability of dominant phosphorus fraction up to 30 days received the maximum Ca-P concentration in alluvial soil and Fe-P up to 60 days in acidic soils, respectively.

Abstract:
Hydrogeochemical analyses were conducted on groundwater sampled from the Saloum aquifer, in southern Senegal. The objective was to identify the chemical processes that control hydrochemistry and to assess the quality of groundwater for determining its suitability for drinking and agricultural purposes. Water samples were collected from 79 wells during the dry season in May 2012, and were subjected to analysis for chemical characteristics (major ions), pH, electrical conductivity (EC) and total dissolved solid (TDS). The dominant hydrochemical facies observed for the groundwater samples are NaCl and CaHCO3. Gibbs plot depicts predominance of rock water interaction and evaporation processes controlling the water chemistry. Percentage of Na+, Residual Sodium Carbonate (RSC), Total Hardness (TH) and Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR) values were calculated. The results were compared with the standard guideline values recommended by the World Health Organization and agricultural water standards. The TDS in groundwater is less than 1200 mg/L and SAR values are less than 10. RSC values overall are less than 1.25 meq/L. Results show that the groundwater in the area has generally a low hardness and is fresh (95%) to brackish. The majority of groundwater samples are appropriate for domestic uses. The indexes for water irrigation compared with standard limits revealed that most of the Saloum groundwater samples fall in the suitable range for irrigation.

Abstract:
Data from 12 surface soils (0 – 15 cm depth)of three cropping systems (enset, maize and grazing land) and path analysis was used to evaluate effects of soil properties: pH, texture (Clay, silt and sand) , organic carbon (OC) cation exchange capacity (CEC),citrate-dithionite-bicarbonate (CDB) extractable Fe and Al (Fed and Ald) on total phosphorous (Pt), organic phosphorous (Po), Olsen P (Available P) and Chang and Jackson (1957) inorganic phosphorous (Pi) fractions. Correlation analysis was performed to study the relationships between soil properties and different soil P pools while path analysis model was used to evaluate direct and indirect effect of these soil properties on the P pools. Only soil properties that significantly contribute to the fit of the model were used. High significant values of coefficient of determination (R2) and low values of uncorrelated residual (U) values indicate the path analysis model explains most of the variations in soil Pt, Po, Olsen-P, Saloid-P, Ca-P, Al-P, and Fe-P pools. Soil pH had significantly high and positive direct effect (D = 0.618*) on Pt, (D = 1.044***) on saloid P, and (D = 1.109***) on Fe-P with modest and negative indirect effect (D= -0.478 and -0.405) on saloid P and Fe-P, respectively, through OC. The direct effect of clay on Ca-P, Al-P and Fe-P (readily available P forms) was significant and negative with a relatively higher indirect effect on Fe-P through pH suggesting that clay is dominant soil property that influences readily available P pools in Nitisols of the study area. Fed had significant and negative direct effect (D = -0.430*) on Olsen available P with low negative indirect effect ( D = -0.154) through pH results in significant and negative correlation (r = -0.657*). The significant and negative direct effect of Fed on Olsen P indicates that crystalline iron is the sink for available P. Relative influence of the soil properties on the soil P pools was in the order: pH > clay > Fed > OC. These results show that most of P pools of Nitisols of Wolayita are best predicted from pH, clay (texture), Fed and OC. On the other hand, our data also show that the inclusion of other soil variables is needed to fully predict Ca-P and stable P pools.

Abstract:
Soils in boundary conditions of contrasting ecosystems generally show unique features. Transition often leads to changes in soil-forming processes, whereby the environment never comes to equilibrium and therefore the soil chemistry and mineralogy show different influences. Such an environment was analysed in the Saloum River basin, west-central Senegal. The objective was to identify the main pedogenic processes prevailing in this saline and acid pedoenvironment and to assess the influence of environmental factors (climate, topography, soil salinity and acidity) on local soil formation and mineral distribution. The terrace landscape is built up by a floodplain, a low terrace, which is still influenced by groundwater, and a middle terrace. The results show that soil properties are strongly influenced by hydrology, salinity and acidity in the entire toposequence: Gleyic Hyposalic and Hypersalic Solonchaks (Sulfatic) in the floodplain, Haplic Gleysols (Thionic) in the low terrace, and Endogleyic Arenosols in the middle terrace. The oxidation of pyrite followed by the redistribution of the main products (Fe2+ and SO42–) represents the major chemical process responsible for iron oxide and jarosite formation. Mineral distribution and crystallinity are linked to the landscape position, which controls the hydrological behaviour and reactions of Fe and S ions. Finally, we observed intrapedon processes such as gleysation, sulfidisation and sulfurisation, as well as interpedon processes such as salinisation, colluvio-alluviation and lateral eluviation. The combination of processes depends strongly on the landscape positions.

Abstract:

Abstract:
SummaryUsing data from a 1982–83 survey, infant and early childhood mortality are investigated in a large rural region of Senegal. Because of evidence of under-reporting of early mortality an adjustment factor was applied to the data. Infant mortality was estimated to be about 113 deaths per 1000 live births. Childhood mortality was very high relative to infant mortality. Some noteworthy differentials in mortality between geographic, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups were recorded. It was estimated that diarrhoeal and respiratory diseases accounted for about one-half of reported deaths. Tetanus was an important cause of death during infancy. Measles and malaria were important causes only after the first birthday.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Jednak oburzające i prowokacyjne zachowania maskowałoy głęboką świętość. Formy tej radykalnej formy ascetyzmu były różne: ekscentryczne zachowanie, narzucanie sobie ubóstwa, nieskrępowana prostota, wyobcowanie i prowokowanie publicznego upokorzenia. „Święty głupiec” – salos przyjmował taką postawę, aby skuteczniej głosić Ewangelię i o niej świadczyć.

Abstract:
SummaryThis exploratory study aims to understand and improve the performance of Gambia Indigenous Livestock Multipliers’ Associations (GILMA – Fulladu and Saloum) as a way of enabling them to better respond to the challenges faced in fulfilling their institutional responsibilities. Using participatory institutional diagnosis, the GILMA members and experts were able to examine their associations and to stimulate collective reflection as a means of making the associations more efficient and effective. The findings of this diagnosis showed that functioning of both GILMAs was closely linked to the operations of their technical partners. This resulted to GILMAs which clearly lack defined vision and mission. Main issues to address include capacity development of GILMA's executive committee in terms of institutional management, group facilitation, participatory planning, effective strategies for partnership and ownership. Overall, this study developed pathways for revitalizing GILMAs into vibrant and self-sustaining indigenous ruminant livestock multipliers’ associations that can effectively carry out specific roles and responsibilities within the three-tier Open Nucleus Breeding Scheme of the International Trypanotolerance Centre.

Abstract:
AbstractChronogaster tessellata n. sp. is described from soil samples collected around roots of weed plants in the Saloum region, Senegal. It differs from all the species hitherto described by the presence of 40 longitudinal lines over the entire circumference of body giving the cuticle a tessellated appearance. The new species comes close to C. magnifica Andrássy, 1956 (20–24 longitudinal lines) but is less slender (a = 20–29.5 vs 29–44), with a shorter tail length (78–104 vs 114–147 μm), the radial tubules originating at 16.5–17.2 vs 19–21.5 μm posterior to base of mouth cavity. It can be separated from C. alata Gerlach, 1956 (18 longitudinal lines) by its shorter body length (0.63–0.77 vs 1.44 mm), smaller a and c′ ratios (20–29.5 vs 53 and 5.8–7.5 vs 17, respectively), and tail terminus with a mucro bearing four ventrally recurved prongs vs finely rounded in C. alata.
