Abstract:
AbstractAry Scheffer (1795-1858) is so generally included in the French School (Note 2)- unsurprisingly, since his career was confined almost entirely to Paris - that the fact that he was born and partly trained in the Netherlands is often overlooked. I would particularly like to thank my supervisor, Professor Barry Rose, and Professor Michael Roe of the Department of History, University of Tasmania, for their generous and patient support during the time this thesis took to write. Dr Fred Levine, School of Art, University of Tasmania, read the thesis in its first draft and also offered me a number of valuable suggestions regarding the re-organisation of its structure for which I have been most grateful. The bulk of the research, particularly for Chapters 1, 4, 5 and 6, was carried out during a three-month visit to Paris in 1988, for w
