Ziegler, Ellen. "Application of a salutogenic design model to the architecture of low-income housing." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/51366.

Abstract:
A strong correlation exists between inadequate housing and stress, and between stress and health. Studies have found that inadequate housing places both mental and physical stress on residents and that families and individuals living in low-income housing are often facing more stress and suffer from ill health more than those living in market housing. Salutogenesis, a concept developed by Aaron Antonovsky, focuses on what causes health rather than what causes illness. He links health with the ability to comprehend, manage and apply meaning to stress. This ability is called a Sense of Coherence. The higher the sense of coherence, the less negative the impact of stress will have on mental and physical health. It has also been shown that residents in low-income housing are often confronted with multiple social, physical, emotional and financial stressors, which can further weaken their sense of coherence. In this regard, low-income residents share a similarity with the hospital patients documented in many studies of salutogenics in healthcare, in that they face an abnormally high amount of stress and may be in situations that have weakened their sense of coherence. In the 1990s architect Alan Dilani suggested that Antonovsky’s salutogenic principles be applied to the architectural design of healthcare facilities as a means to promote health. More recently, this design model has also been applied to long-term care facilities and workplaces, however it has not yet been applied to low-income housing. Although the presence of stress is not solely due to architecture, architecture and design can either intensify or mitigate the effects of stress on health. Countless studies show a relationship between the design of our built environment and health. For example, there is a direct link between access to natural light and blood pressure, between over-crowding or chronic noise and psychological stress and between healing and nature. With over 8% of the Canadian population living in low-income housing and 3.3 million households paying more than what is considered affordable on rent (>30% of their income), addressing the health impact of low-income housing design is critical.
Applied Science, Faculty of
Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA), School of
Graduate

Abstract:
Orientador: Alexandre Janotta Drigo
Participaram seis prof... How physical education can contribute and respond to this situation? It is well established in the literature how exercise prevents chronic diseases. Nevertheless, knowledge about the ways physical education might contribute to health promotion is lacking. In this context, the present study was designed to address the topic of how Health-Physical Education (HPE) professionals might help older adults to develop their health and experience ageing positively. The aim was to investigate the practices adopted by HPE professionals to deliver bodily practices for disadvantaged older adults in healthpromoting programmes, and to understand what health development processes the older adults experienced and perceived as related to their participation in bodily practices. The study was informed by salutogenesis, a theory for health promotion proposed by the sociologist Aaron Antonovsky. Alongside this theoretical perspective, the investigation drew on the notions of bodily practices and pedagogy. The study was conducted with a qualitative approach and a grounded theory research design. Theoretical sampling guided the inclusion of four health-promoting programmes, located in the southeast and south regions of Brazil. Participants were six HPE professionals, three health centres´... Karlsson, Sofie, Åhlström Erica Ljunglöf, and Amandaklara Sagemar.

Abstract:
In this study, we have chosen to look at the physical activity that counts as the wellness that the workplace offers. It is about helping your employees to good personal health, at the same time as the employer itself benefits from healthy employees. The study's health pedagogical idea meant to shed light on what enables physical activity and how the workplace can contribute to personal development regarding physical health. The purpose of the study was to shed light on how employees and employers describe aspects that affect the possibility of performing physical activity under the auspices of the employer. To analyze and interpret the study, we have used a theory and a perspective, Bronfenbrenner's developmental ecological model and a salutogenic perspective. The study was based on a qualitative approach where individual interviews were used as a data collection method. The sample consisted of eight respondents, four of whom were employers and four were employees. The study was able to establish from the results that it is important for the employer to involve the employees in the range offered so that as many as possible will use the wellness at the company. It is also important for the employer to take advantage of the social affiliation that has been stated to be a major motivating factor and maintain it as a positive aspect in the employees' everyday lives.

Abstract:
Our work is a description of how one school works in a health promoting way. The possibility and possible diffuculties with health promoting work in school will be presented. With help of questionarie and interviews we examen how the principal, the teachers and the schoolsister look at their role in their health promoting work. Our question is: what does the school give credit for in the conception health and how do they put it into practice?Worldhealthorganisations (WHO) coprehensvie view on health isn´t just to prevent sickness and bad health, it is to promote health, both physical and mental care. Since school is the place where you can meet most of the children it is important that the healthcare starts there. A health promoting work can improve both the student’s health and their knowledge.A salutogenic model is the theory we think is the most appropiate for our work. The theory is about how we manage to maintain what´s good and well in a students´ life. Not the bad things or what kind of problems that could appear. Our conclusion is that the school has a vision about how they should work but today it isn´t working. Some of the teachers are already working in a healthpromoting way but they wishes to have more clearly instuctions. To make the healthpromoting work success, it needs more clearly instructions and a working management.

Hallenberg, Carin, and Lisa Karlstrand. "Skyddsfaktorer : hur begreppet synliggörs och hur kunskaper tillämpas inom tre skolbaserade preventionsprogram." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Sociologiska institutionen, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-216124.

Full text
Abstract:
This bachelor thesis aims to explore how the concept of protective factors among children and youths are made visible and how knowledge on the subject is implemented in three Swedish school-based prevention programs: Social och Emotionell Träning (SET), Örebro Preventionsprogram (ÖPP) and Community Parent Education Program (COPE). Existing research on protective factors among children and youths suggests that a promoting of these factors within the lives of vulnerable children and youths can help them resist a development of an antisocial behavior. This bachelor thesis will be looking at school-based preventions programs because school is the social arena where most kids spend a majority of their time spent outside of their home. The study aims to answer the following questions: - How is the concept of protective factors made visible in the program descriptions of the three school-based prevention programs? - How is knowledge on the subject of protective factors implemented in the practice of the prevention programs according to how it is described in the program descriptions? - Are there any similarities or differences between the programs in regard to their implementation of knowledge on the subject of protective factors and their importance? A content analysis was performed on the literature of the three prevention programs on the basis of two chosen themes: the prevention programs design and background as well as protective factors – how the concept is made visible and how knowledge is implemented. The results have then been connected to existing research on protective factors among children and youths. The theoretical framework of the study consists of Antonovsky’s theory on the salutogenic model and SOC (Sense of Coherence) as well as systems theory and Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological model. When analyzing the material it was found that the three prevention programs were different in their design. Partly whether they are universal or selective preventions, and partly whether they have chosen to aim their focus at the children and youths individual protective factors or on their parental protective factors. Only one of the prevention programs explicitly mentioned protective factors in its material and implemented the knowledge on the subject in the programs design and execution. In the material belonging to the other two prevention programs the concept of protective factors and knowledge on the subject was not as apparent, but the subject was still visible in more implicit ways.

Abstract:
Health defines a person’s general condition, both mind and body. Being healthy or have “good health” is something that people, on a daily basis, can read about in the newspaper or on the internet, but what is health or being healthy? Health is often taken for granted and is also often associated with training, but many claim that health is not only about being fit or train hard. There are different definitions of health; world health organization (WHO) has one that has been acknowledged for many years: “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. This definition has been controversy because it says that a person only can have good health if the person is free from illness, injury or pain which can seems quite possible to achieve. WHO:s definition about health, is not the only one, there are many more definitions that has been created by dissimilar people. The aim with this study was to see how teachers look at health (and health studies) and where they got their knowledge about health. If you look at previous studies it says that health is a personal thing, each individual has their own opinion what health is, something that the teacher in this study agreed about. This is a qualitative study and sex teachers were interviewed. The result has been analyzed by two health models, the continuum model and the clinic model. The result showed that the teachers look at health from a continuum perspective and the teachers also said that their athletic background were the main reason for there value of health and how they look at health overall.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Sick leave due to mental ill-health, caused by poor working conditions in the social and organizational work environment is a growing problem in the society. There is a lack of research on working conditions’ impact on health from a salutogenic perspective. The purpose of this study is to investigate the extent to which perceived working conditions can be associated with self-rated health from a salutogenic perspective among warehouse workers at a workplace. The study is based on questionnaire data. Univariat- and multiple linear regressions were performed to investigate the relationship between working conditions and health. The result showed that there are significant associations between working conditions and self-rated health. The strongest associations were found with supportive working conditions, time experience, individual inner experinces, and health. This means that it is important to have a high social climate in the workplace with access to support from both colleagues and employer, that work is perceived as meaningful, to have opportunities for development, that personnel education matches the requirements for the job and that there is enough time to perform tasks without stress. Self-rated health increased with age but there were no significant differences by gender, employment status, education or ethnic background. The result has been discussed on the basis of sense of coherence (SOC) and the demand-control-support model as a theoretical perspective.

Abstract:
In this study we have attempted to create an understanding of which circumstances help women who are victims of trafficking for sexual exploitation to go ahead and build a new life. To achieve this understanding a qualitative interview study was made where people who help these women shared their experience and knowledge. Based on their statements five themes, that describe the helping circumstances, have been identified in the analysis. These themes describe for example how women get away from their traffickers through others, how they are described as strong survivors, how they need time, encouragement and to get order in practical issues and how relationships and a hope for the future can give them strength. These circumstances, which emerged help women to build a new life, were then interpreted based on the salutogenic model with focus on general resistance resources and a sense of coherence. With these theories as a starting point, it became clear how some general resistance resources can be seen in the helping circumstances and how the women seem to be able to find a sense of coherence. Taken together, this could explain why these circumstances help women build a new life.

Abstract:
This study provides an orientation towards coping with stress management through salutogenic functioning. Six constructs, namely, sense of coherence, hardiness, self-efficacy, potency, learned resourcefulness and locus of control, were studied as it manifest amongst random sampled university administrative staff. The literature review focused on salutogenic functioning, coping and stress, integrated in the salutogenic personality profile. The results from the research revealed positive correlations between external locus of control and self-efficacy and meaningfulness, autonomy and self control, internal locus of control and meaningfulness, internal locus of control and meaningfulness, challenge and meaningfulness. Negative correlations existed between autonomy and self-efficacy and comprehensibility, potency and all locus of control dimensions, males and females differed in their self control and external control, black africans had the lowest score on external control, and there was no relationship between age and the constructs. Conclusions and recommendations were made regarding the optimisation of salutogenic functioning among university administrative staff.
Industrial and Organisational Psychology
M.A. (Industrial and Organisational Psychology)

Kossuth, Stephen Patrick. "Team building and salutogenic orientations contextualised in a performance model." Thesis, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/17120.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this research has been to investigate the relationships between team building, salutogenesis and performance. Team building was investigated by focusing on the directive and interactive dimensions of • climate • supervisory support • team work. Salutogenesis was investigated by focusing on the concepts of • sense of coherence • locus of control • self-efficacy. Work performance was investigated by focusing on • performance measurement criteria • self-appraisal as a cognitive mediator between performance and salutogenesis. In the literature survey a performance model was postulated to explain the relationships between team building, salutogenesis and performance. The personality profile of the optimal functioning individual in the context of the performance model was compiled from the personality profiles of the optimal functioning team member, the optimal functioning individual and the optimal performing individual. In the empirical investigation a sample (N = 245) of mine employees completed a battery of questionnaires using computerised data collection. The battery was subjected to item-test correlations, Cronbach alpha coefficient measurements and factor analyses, to establish the reliability and structure of each questionnaire. lntercorrelations were calculated and analysed to test the relationships between the dimensions, and concepts. Following this, the factor analysis of a five factor model established the relationships between the dimensions and concepts of team building, salutogenesis and performance. Finally, LISREL-analyses were performed to test the conceptual structure of the relationships. The empirical findings indicate that team building forms a construct based on directive and interactive dimension of climate, supervisory support and team work. Salutogenesis forms a construct and it includes the incorporation of work performance as a concept of salutogenic orientations. The relationship between the constructs was confirmed using LIS REL-analysis, thus validating the integration of the dimensions and properties within each construct into the properties of a performance model; and the personality profiles within each construct into the personality profile of the optimal functioning individual. The empirical results were integrated with the literature review. Team building and salutogenic orientations are integrated into a performance model which explains the relationships between the work environment, the behaviour of the individual and his/her performance within the context of the work environment.
Industrial and Organisational Psychology
D.Litt. et Phil. Abstract:
In this qualitative, interpretive, multi-perspective study a new and promising salutogenic imagery approach developed in Germany, called Value-Oriented Imagery (Wertimagination/WIM®) was researched in regard to its applicability in multicultural (non-European) contexts. A second question researched was whether specific cultural or regional “dialects” would be encountered in the universal inner picture language of persons from other (non-European) cultural backgrounds than the one the approach was developed within. A WIM® study with eighteen participants from African South African, Asian South African and European South African cultural backgrounds was conducted in Johannesburg in 2011 and 2012. The results were analysed and compared with WIM® work experiences from Germany. Subsequently the results of the comparison were discussed in three WIM® expert interviews: with Uwe Boeschemeyer, Stephan Peeck and Andreas Boeschemeyer. The main outcome of this research study is that Value-Oriented Imagery can be seen as a rewarding contribution to South African multicultural (logo)therapy/ counselling contexts. Only minor cultural and regional “dialects” occurred in the universal inner symbols of the RSA study participants, such as the occurrence of more water features, especially waterfalls, and more spontaneous, unintended Healthy Inner Child encounters. The present study suggests that work with Value- Oriented Imagery could make a valuable contribution within any cultural and multicultural (logo)therapy/counselling context.
Psychology
D. Abstract:
In this qualitative, interpretive study a new and promising imagery technique, called Wertimagination (WIM®) [Value-Oriented Imagery] was researched. It was developed by the logotherapist Uwe Boeschemeyer in Germany. At the main focus of this study are the psychotherapeutic work experiences of logotherapists applying WIM®. Their perceptions with regard to Wertimagination’s potencies, limitations and its overall contribution to Logotherapy are explored. Eight semi-structured expert interviews were conducted with German logotherapists offering WIM® at their practice. The interview contents are analysed and compared with supplementing perspectives: with Wertimagination experiences reported by other (logo)therapists, by clients and by the developer of the method (Boeschemeyer), extracted from the existing body of literature. The results show that Value-Oriented Imagery by all three researched parties – (logo)therapists, clients and its developer – is experienced to be a high potential logotherapeutic, salutogenetic (resources-oriented) approach contributing inter alia towards a person’s inner meaning finding, selfacceptance and trust in life.
Psychology
M.A. (Psychology)
