Abstract:

THE PUBLIC SPACE(S) IN AN UNEQUAL AND SEGREGATED CITY

This article analyzes the uses of the public spaces in the contemporary urban life, discussing their relevance and ability to express diversity and produce intersubjectivities. For that, it discusses the validity of the thesis indicating the existence of a dilution/restriction process of public spaces. Through literary review, secondary data collection, and interviews with city residents, this work sought to analyze the dynamics of public spaces in Salvador before the recent urban transformations in the city. The findings indicate that the contemporary ransformations favored privatization and selfsegregation, restricting the use of public spaces. However, one cannot speak of the “death” of public spaces in Salvador, for their uses survives – although pressed by several factors such as their heterogeneity and inequality, their segregated and fragmented character, and by privatization and commodification processes, violence and fear, forms of disputes, distinctions and competitions.

Keywords: Public space. Abstract:

INFRASTRUCTURE AND DEVELOPMENT: what can be expected from the bridge Salvador-Itaparica? This review was used to assess the project and to examine the social and economic preconditions that are present in four Territories of Identity that will suffer more directly their impacts (Metropolitana de Salvador, Recôncavo, Baixo Sul and Vale do Jiquiriçá). The analysis of the data and information does not allow us to postulate that the project of the Road System of the West and its Bridge could contribute significantly to mitigate the significant inequality and promote the endogenous and sustainable development of the territories. The approach used in this analysis, by rejecting the traditional economic view, extends the discussion of the relationship between investments in infrastructure and regional development using evidences from this case study.

Key words: Infrastructure; Development; Territories of identity; Productive Settlements; Regional Policies

TO INHABIT OCCUPIED MANSIONS IN THE HISTORICAL CENTER OF SALVADOR, BAHIA, BRAZIL: old collective houses and new experiences and rights

The objective of this article is to describe, analyze and reflect about a modality of housing that has been gradually gaining quantitative and qualitative importance in the city of Salvador (Bahia, Brazil) and in its historical center (CHS). The ethnographic field work carried out with six occupations allowed me to arrive at some conclusions that I present in this work: 1) that some occupations are an updated version of the old “cortiços” of CHS, with problems that aggravate their situation even more; 2) that most of them are essays on a new way of living which represents a rich experience of self-management and female leadership; 3) that centrality is an essential value for precarious and vulnerable workers who have been living in the center of the city since the nineteenth century, a value that is now being claimed in discourses and / or practices such as the right to centrality.

Key words: Occupations; Historical Center of Salvador (CHS); Collective housing; Ways of dwelling; Centrality

<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> "A retrospective study on the oral health of patients in the intesive care unit." Abstract:

Introduction: the oral condition of patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is extremely important for clinical status monitoring,
as lesions in the oral mucosa may imply complications and worsening of the health status of these patients. A higher probability
of adherence, colonization, and bacterial infection in the oral cavity of patients in the ICU has also been reported. The poor oral
hygiene conditions of these patients may be related to the reduction of salivary flow and difficulties in maintaining oral hygiene in a
hospital environment, which rarely employs dentists on staff. Objective: to analyze the dental condition of patients admitted to the
ICU of Roberto Santos General Hospital, Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Methodology: a total of 73 patients were evaluated through an oral
examination performed with a wooden spatula and sterile gauze under natural light, and data were collected and analyzed. Results:
The most commom oral lesions were tongue-coating (41%) and ulcerations in the oral mucosa caused by trauma or dehydration
(19.1%). The occurrence of pseudomembranous candidiasis (8.2%), dehydration of the lips and mucosa (26%), and angular cheilitis
(9.5%) was additionally recorded. It was observed that 31.5% patients had more than 10 days of hospitalization and of these, 26%
presented pseudomembranous candidiasis. This clinical condition was not seen in patients with a shorter hospital stay. Conclusions:
this study suggest a possible association between the length of stay of these patients and the clinical conditions presented. Thus, the
results of this study may guide preventive and curative measures implemented by dental surgeons who may, in the future, be part
of the multidisciplinary team of professionals working in the hospital environment, especially in ICUs.

CAPES
Studies focusing on a seasonal and behavioral dynamics of the zoo in tropical regions are still scarce. Inserted in this context, the present dissertation (part of INCT Ambitropic project) aimed to identify the zooplanktonic community composition, emphasizing the class Copepoda, along a transect perpendicular to the continental shelf of Salvador; as well as describing and understanding the spatial and temporal distribution of zooplankton (density, abundance and diversity), analyzing the influence of the clime and oceanographic structure on this distribution. The transect was composed of four stations (BA1, BA2, BA3 and BA4), with water and zooplankton samples collected from April 2013 to October 2014, totaling ten campaigns. Samples of plankton were collected with a standard conical plankton net through horizontal hauls (300 µm mesh size and 60 cm of mouth diameter), with a duration of five minutes and a flowmeter coupled to the net mouth. Rainfall data were obtained through the INMET. Water samples were collected to obtain abiotic data (dissolved oxygen, nitrate and total phosphorus) and the temperature and salinity data were obtained from the CTD. The zooplankton showed a total of 131 taxa, and the holoplankton represented 94.5% of the community and the meroplankton 5.5%. There were representatives of phyla Protozoa, Cnidaria, Platyhelminthes, Mollusca, Sinpucula, Crustacea, Bryozoa, Chaetognatha, Echinodermata and Chordata. Among the groups identified, Copepoda prevailed with a total of 65 taxa, and the community was dominated by Farranula gracilis (13%), Paracalanus sp. (12%), Clausocalanus sp. (11%), Onchocorycaeus latus (11%) and Temora turbinata (10%). With the exception of transparency all the abiotic variables recorded temporal variability. The diversity (H’< 1bits.ind-1) and evennessn(J’<0.5) of Copepods were considered too low. The density of Copepods was low with general average of 180.46±175.05 org.m-³, varying from 29.95 org.m³ to 427.98 org.m³. Density recorded a gradient oriented in the coast-ocean direction as opposed to the diversity that did not register a gradient besides having been very low. The redundancy analysis showed a clear separation between stations and sampling campaigns according to the oceanographic gradient generated by the abiotic variables, as well as by the composition and density of the Assembly of Copepoda. The rainfall, although presenting an atypical pattern, influenced both the pattern of the abiotic variables and the community. Together, the results showed that the composition and density of Copepods was influenced by the Oceanographic structure of the Tropical Water mass.
