Abstract:
This article focuses on Salvadoran-American poetry that explores Salvadorans’ national traumas of war and displacement. In these poems, war trauma evolves into a post-conflict, post-migration trauma that calls for reconciliation with war memories as well as with a violent, unstable present. This study focuses on the poetry of Jorge Argueta (1961), William Archila (1968), and Javier Zamora (1990), three poets born in El Salvador and immigrants to the US. Studies of trauma and reconciliation in post-conflict societies frame the analysis of poetry that digs up and reconstitutes the dead for a Salvadoran diaspora still un-reconciled with its trauma.

Abstract:
Abstract Previous research on /s/ weakening in Spanish has consistently aligned with Labovian principles: women prefer the prestige variant, usually [s], while men favor nonstandard, lenited variants. However, in Salvadoran Spanish—a dialect that weakens /s/ across syllable positions and shows allophonic variation beyond the tripartite paradigm of [s]/[h]/[∅]—gender-based lenition patterns contradict this generalization. This study examines the production of phonological /s/ by 72 Salvadorans balanced for region, urbanicity, age, and gender who participated in sociolinguistic interviews in El Salvador in 2015. We find that women not only lenite /s/ at higher rates than men overall, but also produce significantly more of the variants that carry the most local stigma. We further find that, counterintuitively, women are significantly more likely than men to lenite /s/ in utterance- and word-initial prosodic positions, which are stronger and more perceptually salient than medial and final tokens. We argue that these discrepancies are best understood by taking El Salvador’s unique historical and sociopolitical context into account. Specifically, we propose that a culture of state-sanctioned violence against women and the unprecedented threat of gangs in El Salvador have led to the social segregation and linguistic isolation of women, affording them little access to standard linguistic forms even as globalization, urbanization, industrialization, and migration facilitate a shift toward linguistic standardization.

Abstract:
Palabras claves: El Salvador, Claudia Hernández, postguerra, duelo This article explores the task of mourning in contemporary Salvadoran literature with special attention to Claudia Hernández’s short story “Hechos de un buen ciudadano” (Parts I and II). It posits that the task of mourning in postwar Salvadoran fiction may be understood as an unfinished process that seeks to challenge the official aims of “healing the wounds of the past” and restore the national community. Therefore, the incomplete task of mourning, as Hernández presents it, becomes a demand for justice for the crimes committed by the State. Keywords: El Salvador, Claudia Hernández, postwar, mourning

Abstract:
This paper is primarily a compilation of published data on the staphylinid beetle species reported for El Salvador. It is based on taxonomic and ecological literature, with inclusion of some new records from different entomological collections. Thirty eight genera and 96 species are reported in the list, including a first country record: Eulissus chalybaeus. Country-level distribution outside of El Salvador, locality references and topographic zones are included for each species. In the list, three endemic species are recorded: Seeversiella badia, S. minima and Stenus salvadorensis. It is remarkable that 14 genera (37%) and 52 species (54%) have only been reported at a country level in the literature, without a specific locality of collection, indicating the need for local inventories of this coleopteran family in the salvadoran territory.

Abstract:
Ex-combatants who fought with the Salvadoran Army during El Salvador’s 1980–92 civil war often recall being ‘captured’, rather than recruited, suffering beatings and humiliation in the course of training, and fighting without a sense of purpose or direction. Those who served with rebel forces, by contrast, recall fatigue and frustration with new routines, but seldom hazing or abuse; most also recalled deep, ongoing instruction about the purpose and goals of the war. This comparison highlights the broad variation in armed groups’ formal institutions for socialization, a topic that political scientists have only recently begun to examine in depth. The Salvadoran case also emphasizes some shortcomings of the existing literature, which may elide the differing effects of different formal institutions, treat individual institutions as operating independently on combatant behavior, and/or fail to map complex causal processes intervening between institutions and behavior. This article takes as its starting point the observation that many armed group institutions – including recruitment, military training, political training, and disciplinary regimes – are components of the process known more generally as ‘combatant socialization’. Examining specific institutional processes associated with combatant socialization allows for the generation of more refined and specific theories of combatant socialization as both a causal variable and an outcome. At the same time, treating armed group institutions as related elements of a broader process, rather than as fully separate institutions, may also advance understandings of the effects of these institutions. I demonstrate that the implementation and content of formal institutions for socialization varied significantly both across and within groups in El Salvador; building on this analysis, I lay out several potential directions for comparative research.

Abstract:
The existence of a division between what Italo López Vallecillos has termed the “agro-financial” and “agro-industrial-financial” factions of the Salvadoran elite has become what Enrique Baloyra calls “the consensus of scholarly opinion” on elite politics in El Salvador. As López Vallecillos describes the division, the agro-financial faction “opposes any attempt to transform the rigid framework of land concentration and low salaries in its devotion to the plantation economy that is the basis of its income and profits.” The agro-industrial faction, in contrast, “tries to introduce changes in the economic system … and opts for less authoritarian political forms, within the framework of liberal democracy, representative but restricted and controlled.” Oscillation between these two elite strategies has long characterized Salvadoran politics, and in the 1920s, the temporary dominance of the more liberal faction gave El Salvador the reputation of being the most progressive country in Central America. During times of crisis like the 1930s and the early 1980s, however, the positions of the two factions converged to support the retrograde policies of the more conservative “agro-financial” faction, which have given El Salvador an international reputation for ferocious authoritarianism.

Abstract:
AbstractThis research note seeks to offer some resolution to the theoretical disagreements over how democratization affects civil society, specifically in a transition toward democracy that occurs through pacted settlements of an armed internal conflict. Using a comparative study over time of the labor movement in El Salvador, the authors demonstrate that while unions of the political center and left have weakened since the signing of the Salvadoran Peace Accords, independent labor groups show higher levels of organizing and right-leaning unions have maintained nearly constant levels of organizing. But the labor movement has become atomized because unions have been unable to redefine their once-common political goals to adopt other unified stances in the postwar period. The data show that the unions that have relinquished excessively politicized stances or never claimed them are the ones that survive and sometimes grow in the postwar environment. These findings have implications for the nature of the emerging Salvadoran democracy and the economic well-being of its citizens.

Abstract:
The inland fish fauna of El Salvador and its distribution was originally described in 1925 by Samuel Hildebrand. That work has been the main source of information for freshwater fishes of El Salvador up to today. Based on the combination of an intensive literature review, electronic database searches, re-identification of museum specimens, and fieldwork, we hereby provide an updated checklist of the inland fishes of El Salvador. This checklist provides distributional data at the Salvadoran hydrographical and political (by department) levels. The checklist is systematically arranged at the ordinal and familial level and then alphabetically therein. The freshwater fish fauna of El Salvador includes 101 species divided into 64 genera, 29 families, and 14 orders. According to their supposed tolerance to salinity, 73% of these species are peripheral, 23% secondary, and only 4% are primary freshwater fishes. One species is endemic to the country, Amatitlania coatepeque. The low number of primary freshwater fishes and endemics is comparable to the Central American Pacific slope in particular, as well as northern Central America in general.

Abstract:
Regional literature, specifically eye dialect, is conspicuously missing from language classrooms due to its non-normative orthography. Even native speakers of the language struggle with unconventional spellings as dictionaries become useless tools. Moreover, most readers lack intuition regarding regional speech phenomena or its orthographic representations. While we are all speakers of a dialect, many are only familiar with their regional variety. Salvadoran regional literature may feature “pue” instead of “pues”, “pos” in Mexican literature, and “po” in Chilean literature. All examples divert from the normative “pues” despite sharing the same contextual cues. In regional representations, “fue” is written as “jue” to convey the [ˈxwe] pronunciation of the word. These regional texts, like those written by Salvadoran author Salarrué, are extraordinarily interesting because they capture graphically the phonetic phenomena characteristic of languages in contact and/or dialectal variations such as elisions and aspirations, among others. In a study conducted by the researcher, it was found that heritage speakers of Spanish possess a unique background knowledge compared to native and non-native speakers. Along with linguistic decoding strategies, this proved to be beneficial for them when reading and understanding “Semos malos”. Heritage students (Group C) were able to ‘evaluate’ many types of ‘candidates’ and were well-equipped to understand global phonetic phenomena as portrayed in regional literature from other areas.

Abstract:
The research highlights Salvadoran migrants’ identities within the United States since their departure from El Salvador during its Civil War. The purpose of this research is to provide a historical context of the Civil War and an analysis of the transitions of documentation that occur upon arriving to the United States. In doing so, I demonstrate how physical documentation builds an influential and detrimental power over the Salvadoran migrants’ participation within the community. It is important to mention the Civil War because of two reasons: one, for its introduction to various stages of enduring violence, and two, for its impact on migration laws towards Salvadoran refugees. This research not only portrays the various shifts of aggression, but it also distinguishes documentation as a juxtaposition between legality and classism. More importantly, the findings reveal a correlation between these dynamics of violent documentation and the Salvadorans’ distorted, misguided, and inconclusive perceptions that they hold about the concepts of belonging and identity.

Abstract:
The late twentieth century and early twenty-first century have seen revived the debate about the relationship between history and literature, understood as fiction, in the sense of a blurring of boundaries between the two. Based on this premise, our study at the crossroads of these two concepts aims to show the links between contemporary Central American history and fiction in novels of Honduras-Salvadoran author Horacio Castellanos Moya. Indeed, the history of several Central American countries, marked by years of dictatorship, civil wars and political or economic violence has had a significant impact on many local authors. The fictional work of Horacio Castellanos Moya bears evident traces. To identify, understand their issues and how they appear in the novels, the study was divided into three main parts. The first deals with the biographical data Horacio Castellanos Moya as man and writer; the second, the main historical facts themed and the last of their stage in the work

Abstract:
The study object of this thesis is the poetical works of Salvador Estrem i Fa (Falset, 1893-1936). I propose its study and philological edition. The poetry of Estrem consists in four printed volumes —Les hores dolces, Elegia del Priorat i altres versos, La mala collita i El Crist de la Solitud—, a typescript of five poems —a book project that remained unpublished— and a collection of poems published in newspapers which were not collected in volume. The first part deals with the study of the poetry and has three chapters: on the one hand, a short biography of the poet in the context of the region and the time in which he lived; on the other hand, the critical analysis of these four books, allowing us to analyze the most important foundations of this poetry and its evolution over the years; finally, the detailed study of the language used by Estrem in his compositions, along with the changes taking, and the analysis of literary forms found in his poems. This study seeks to highlight the personality of Salvador Estrem and his work in the context of Catalan poetry during the studied period, as a representative of the authors located outside the predominant cultural centers, and to show the importance of the cultural movement to the Priorat region in this period. The second part is the philological edition of this poetry, preceded by the description of the testimonies, the textual history of the published books and the poetry not included in volume and the discussion about the editing criteria. Its purpose is to offer the poetry of Salvador Estrem to a current reader to be read without the graphic difficulties and the spelling conventions of an old edition. The thesis concludes with the references to the complete bibliography of Salvador Estrem, both published books and articles published in journals, and an appendix with the transcription of preserved discourses and the references to the correspondence.

Abstract:
This study, Jupiter, a theatre play: an ideological discourse through literature, is based upon the play written by Francisco Gavidia that tells the story of the Salvadoran nation, which after having lived many decades under the Spanish yoke, is organized with the help of the Creole elite, in order to obtain independence. For Francisco Gavidia it is important to raise awareness of the importance of freedom in the Salvadoran population. The objective of this work is to analyze the main characters in order to identify the existence of an ideological message in the drama, Jupiter. To accomplish this purpose, we have used some drama concepts established by García Barrientos 2007; some other concepts based on the narrative theory by Mieke Bal (1995), and the theory of the Historical Novel explained by Fernández (2003); both theories have served as a tool to facilitate and deepen the study of the characters, some structural elements, and ideological discourse that we find in this literary work. Our study has focused on the analysis of the main characters, both fictional and historical, with the main character being a black slave: Jupiter. This figure represents the Salvadoran population that has lived several decades under the Spanish yoke. Then we find the figure of the woman embodied in the character named Blanca. This character plays the role of a passive woman, since she has no voice or power, and she is seen as an object through which the male characters can obtain power and material wealth. Another fictional character is Beltranena who represents the Spanish power in Salvadoran territory during the Colonial era. Finally, there are two historical figures who serve the purpose of leaders in the planning and execution of the rebellion to acquire the freedom for the people. Our hypothesis has been corroborated, since according to our analysis the characters deliver an ideological message, because the author exposes the ideology through the main characters.

Abstract:
This thesis was built from an interdisciplinary intersection between geography and literature. A proposal of epistemological research, this thesis proposes a definition of man in a part of Jorge Amado\'s work of urban theme. Mar Morto(1936); Tenda dos Milagres(1969); Jubiabá (1935) and A morte e a morte de Quincas Berro D\'Água (1959) were the chosen books. We argue that this construction is only possible from a questioning of their geographicities in a given geographical environment. All Jorge Amado\'s books worked throughout the chapters have an urban theme considering a geographical reading of Salvador with the corresponding concentration area in the neighborhood of downtown and vicinity. Issues such as class struggle, racial clashes, miscegenation, poor working conditions in the city, Afro-descendant culture and religion, women\'s role, popular social mobility, strength of the elements of nature, cityscapes, were important issues throughout the text. This thesis is based on an ontological reading, where man as a subject is the main theoretical concern. And the geographical foundation of man is guided in its geographical environment. Thus, we conclude that amadiano man to be set is one that is set in the city of Salvador which also contributes to its conceptualization. The geographical environment of the city of Salvador in Jorge Amado\'s books is also an element that establishes the being of man. Thus, we have the Jorge Amado geography built from these categories defined and inserted man in a geographical environment and bringing visibility to their geographicities.

Abstract:
This work aims to evaluate the influence of French literature in Salvadorenian literature throughout the rise and expansion of modernism. To this end, we have studied texts published in certain modernist publications from the end of the XIX century to the early years of the XX century. This study has enabled us to confirm the presence of French translated literature as evidence of the reception of this type of work. In addition, in some cases of missing information on the author or title of the text, it has been possible to locate the original work allowing comparisons to be carried out between the French and the Spanish versions. The analysis of a body of articles has led to the classification of these into four categories: French authors’ texts; quotes and references; divulgative texts; and texts with traces of French. In addition, we have shown which authors were more subject to translations or quoted, which literary movements have a stronger presence, or who translated more text in the publications studied. Reception and translation, French literature, El Salvador, modernism.

This research investigates female domestic workers in Recife and Salvador, their experiences, their struggles, their formation as a class and the precariousness of their lives, in the emancipation conjuncture of the final years of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Through literature, fiction, criminal and civil lawsuits, newspaper advertisements and official documentation, I try to reconstitute the life experiences of black, half-breed and white domestics, slaves, free and manumitted. I argue that those domestics managed their lives in contexts of precariousness, but somehow succeeded to produce experiences of a class identity in formation. They not only were forming themselves as a class just from their own experiences. Literary texts produced by writers and memoirists from Bahia and Pernambuco tried to put them in social and racial subordinate places, attached to paternalistic and proslavery values still resistant to the advancement of formal rules of labor relations. But despite the wealth of literary sources in the production and dissemination of submission values and the subordinate place of the domestic work, I endorse that the set of social experiences of women who engaged in domestic work in the coming years pre and postemancipation put on suspicion idyllic images which associate domestic service to servilism, to harmony between employers and employees. Finally, despite the focus on class formation, I reconstituted wider experiences of popular daily conflicts in which the female domestic workers had participation, believing that not only in the working relationship a class is formed.

Abstract:
This research was carried out to examine the role of educational brand capital applied to private universities in El Salvador. For this purpose, the main contributions of the literature related to the study of brand capital and its application in the educational sector were analyzed, identifying which variables determine brand capital in the higher education sector. Once a suitable model was established, an empirical study was realized through a questionnaire in digital format, using a sample of 381 valid responses from undergraduate students from a private university in San Salvador (El Salvador). In order to validate the proposed construct, structural equation modeling will be applied, using SPSS v.19 and EQS 6.2 as working tools. The results obtained will show the repercussion of each variable of the brand capital relative to the determining variables, which are: brand awareness, brand image, perceived quality, and brand loyalty.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Background: The literature is scarce in descriptions of post-stroke outcomes related to socioeconomic status. Our objective is to describe the association between stroke outcomes and Human Development Index and to evaluate this relation’s geographical distribution in the city of Salvador, Brazil. Design and Settings: Cross-sectional study at Hospital Geral Roberto Santos. Methods: Georeferencing was made using the 2010 Brazil Census. Mortality, post discharge improvement and functional independence at 90 days after stroke were the outcomes obtained with the modified Rankin Scale. Results: From 382 patients with ischemic stroke, 193 were included because they lived in Salvador and had available address information. Only 01 patient was from a low HDI, 74 (38,3%) medium HDI, 90 (46,6%) high HDI and 28 (14,5%) very high HDI region. These groups had, respectively, 4,3%, 12,1% and 10,8% mortality rate, 56,5%, 53% and 56,9% functional independence rate and 45,4%, 40,3% and 35,7% post discharge improvement rate. Only 87 patients had complete address information to be included in the geographical distribution of these results. The results were proportional to the number of individuals in each HDI region. Conclusion: The only outcome that had a direct relation with HDI is post discharge improvement. Likely, it is the outcome that better reflects the recovery assistance available to the patient with stroke. *Authors contributed equally.

Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: This presentation will discuss how mobile devices are used to keep children busy and entertained during child care activities. Mobile devices are considered the 21st “Century Nanny” since parents and caregivers use those tools to engage children’s attention for indefinite periods of time. Research background on touch screen devices and children’s age groups are presented to map age to screen activities and the type of device used. The literature is then compared to a small sample of 45 students attending Pasitos, a pre-k and 1st and 2nd grade school in El Salvador, and the type of mobile devices they used after school. Background: The wide adoption of mobile devices to keep children busy and entertained is a growing concern and a cause for passionate debates. Methodology: This study considered two types of research to compare findings. One study was gathered from the literature to demonstrate how children use mobile devices, apps, and video genres based on age groups. The second study looked at 45 children attending Pasitos and the type of mobile devices they used during child care time at home. Pasitos is a pre-k and 1st and 2nd grade school in El Salvador. Contribution: Identify the type of mobile devices mostly used by children during child care activities. Findings: (1) Touchscreens are the most intuitive interfaces for young children; (2) children’s use of technology can strengthen the relationships between home and school; and (3) mobile apps consider children’s emotions, learning activities, and interaction in the development and design. Recommendations for Practitioners: Touchscreens are the most intuitive interfaces for young children, and adult supervision enhances the children's experience. Recommendation for Researchers: Mobile apps for design and development must consider children’s emotions, learning activities, and interaction. Impact on Society: Children’s use of technology can strengthen the relationships between home and school. Future Research: Few studies have researched the impact of young children’s cognitive and social development with the use of mobile apps.

Abstract:
Introduction: Motor neuron disease is neurodegenerative and the understanding of its prognostic factors is crucial promoting better quality of life for patients. Epidemiological, clinical and nutritional factors have been described as influencing disease progression. Objectives: To describe prognostic factors in patients with Motor Neuron Disease at a specialized outpacient care center in Bahia. Methods: This is an observational, and cross-sectional study, carried out by collecting data from medical records of patients with diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), using forms to acess epidemiology data, clinical characteristics, and nutritional assessment in the beginning of treatment and the time of assessment. The time from the first symptoms until the application of palliative measures was also recorded. Results: 27 patients were enrolled in the study, 51.8% men and 41.8% women, with an average age of 55±11.1 years at diagnosis. No patients were diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and 3.7% had family history of ALS. Weight loss was observed in 95.8% of patients. Among the elderly population, 9% were classified as low weight at the first evaluation, and 81% were classified as such during data collection. Among the adult population, 8.3% were classified as malnourished at their first evaluation, and 27% during data collection. About 81% of the population used some palliative measure. The time between symptoms these measures were of 32 ± 18.6 months for gastrostomy, 38 ± 41.1 months for AMBU use and 49 ± 43.9 months for BiPAP use. Conclusion: A similar distribution of prognostic factors compared with literature was observed, with some particularities such as earlier age of onset, low prevalence of familial ALS and absence of FTD. Significant weight loss was observed, especially in those with bulbar ALS and in the elderly population, which is associated with a poor prognosis. Time from symptoms to palliative measures varied, but was shorter on average in patients with the bulbar form of the disease.

Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study, with patients admitted to a stroke unit of a reference hospital in Salvador-BA between 11/2017 and 03/2020. We included patients over 18 years of age and didn’t include patients with inaccuracies in the filling of medical records or who didn’t meet the criteria for admission to the cohort. Results: 300 patients between 25 and 98 years old (mean: 64 years; SD: 13.34) were analyzed. Regarding cardioembolic etiology (CE), 34 patients (45.3%) had lacunar syndromes (LACS) and 25 (33.3%) Partial Anterior Circulation Syndrome (PACS). Patients with Large Artery Atherosclerosis (LAA) 24 (40.7%) had PACS while 21 (35.6%) of the LACS patients diagnosed with small vessel occlusion (SVO) 22 (62.9%) had LACS. Futhermore, patients with cryptogenic strokes (CS) had predominantly PACS and LACS, 27 (31%) and 40 (46%) respectively. Conclusion: Based on the results of acute strokes of CE, SVO and CS origin are related to LACS. The events originated by LAA are more associated with PACS. Events caused by SVO were related to lacunar syndromes, corroborating with findings in the literature.

Abstract:

Inter-American Development Bank, April 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0010100.

Abstract:

Bernal, Pedro, Giuliana Daga, and Florencia Lopez Boo. Do Behavioral Drivers Matter for Healthcare Decision-making in Times of Crisis?: A study of Low-Income Women in El Salvador During the COVID-19 Pandemic. Inter-American Development Bank, August 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0005094.

Abstract:
Understanding health-seeking behaviors and their drivers is key for governments to manage health policies. There is a growing literature on the role of cognitive biases and heuristics in health and care-seeking behaviors, but little is known of how they might be influenced during a context of heightened anxiety and uncertainty. This study analyzes the relationship between four behavioral predictors the internal locus of control, impatience, optimism bias, and aspirations and healthcare decisions among low-income women in El Salvador. We find positive associations between internal locus of control and preventive health behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic (use of masks, distance, hand washing, and COVID-19 vaccination) and in general (prenatal checkups, iron-rich diets for children and hypertension tests). Measures of impatience negatively correlate with COVID-19 prevention behaviors and mothers micronutrient treatment adherence for children, and optimism bias and educational aspirations with healthcare-seeking behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some associations were more robust during the pandemic, suggesting that feelings of uncertainty and stress could enhance behavioral drivers influence on health-related behaviors, a novel and relevant finding in the literature relevant for the design of policy responses for future shocks.

Abstract:

Deza, María Cecilia, Tatiana Andrea Gélvez Rubio, Diana Gutiérrez Preciado, H. Xavier Jara, and David Arturo Rodríguez Guerrero. Assessing the Effect of Fiscal Policies on the Gender Income Gap in Central America, Panama and the Dominican Republic. Inter-American Development Bank, April 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0012901.

Abstract:
Persistent gender economic differences have led to an extensive amount of literature devoted to the gender wage gap. However, wages are only one component of income for women and men, and self-employment income, non-labour income, taxes, pensions, and benefits are mostly omitted from the analysis. In this paper we contribute to the small but growing literature of gendered fiscal incidence by studying the effect of taxes, social insurance contributions and benefits on the gender gaps in disposable income for five Central American countries: El Salvador, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Panama, and Dominican Republic. Our analysis makes use of tax-benefit microsimulation models based on representative household surveys for each country. We compare results for 2019 and for a year afterwards for each country to determine if there are differences due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Three sets of findings are worth highlighting. Firstly, the tax-benefit systems of Panama and Costa Rica have the largest redistributive effect measured by the size of taxes and benefits at the upper and lower part of the disposable income distribution respectively. Second, Costa Rica is the country that close the gender income gap the most, while in the other countries the tax benefit system does not have an important effect in this regard. Thirdly decomposition of the raw disposable income gender gap indicates that a) labour income is the biggest contributor to the gap in all countries and periods analyzed with a very minor role for tax-benefit instruments. b) almost half of the gap is explained by differences in attributes such as education, age, or geographical location, so a significant gap remains unexplained c) differences in employment rates between genders are less important than differences in remunerations.
