Abstract:
This thesis is a study of the relationship between John Wesley's Christology and his broader theology. No specific effort has yet been made to assess whether or not a meaningful change to Wesley's Christology ever occurred, or to what extent Wesley's Christology shaped his broader theology. The purpose of this study is to fill this gap by first demonstrating that a change to Wesley's Christology did occur and describing the implications of this shift for his broader theology and, second, by evaluating to what degree Wesley's broader theology arose out of, or was shaped by, his Christology. Chapter one describes Wesley's inherited theology, which he received from his family and faith tradition, in order to provide a foundation from which to examine changes to his Christology. Chapter two then demonstrates that a change to Wesley's Christology did occur around his 1738 'evangelical conversion', and describes the implications of this shift for Wesley's evangelical theology. John Wesley identified the core doctrines of the early Methodists as repentance, faith, and holiness. Following Wesley's lead, this study examines three correlating areas of focus as representative of these core Methodist doctrines, in order to describe the relationship between these doctrines and Wesley's Christology. Chapter three, 'Christ and Humanity' examines Wesley's doctrine of humanity, including his understanding of the image of God, original sin, and the nature of salvation as restoration of the divine image. This chapter lays out Wesley's understanding of the need for human repentance. Chapter four, 'Christ Working for Us' examines those doctrines most closely tied to justification as an orienting concern. This includes Wesley's understanding of grace, the stages of faith, repentance itself, works meet for repentance, Christ's imputed righteousness, and adoption. Finally, chapter five, 'Christ Working in Us' examines those doctrines most closely linked to sanctification as an orienting concern. This includes the doctrine of the new birth, freedom from sin, assurance, and Christian perfection. By identifying the changes that occurred to Wesley's Christology and evaluating the relationship between his Christology and other core doctrines, this thesis will contribute to the growing body of research into the theological foundations of Methodism and the life and thought of the Rev. John Wesley.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Frederick G. Lawrence<br>This study investigates Aquinas' understanding of Christ's role in sanctification. In discussing the soteriological effect of Christ's passion, Aquinas makes a distinction between the manner in which the soteriological effect is brought about (modo efficiendi), the effect in itself, and the way the effect is obtained. The dissertation explores Aquinas' understanding of the third element - the securing of the effect of Christ's passion - and the relation of this third element to the first two. Sanctifying grace is given as a result of Christ's saving acts, is infused by an act of the Holy Spirit, and conforms its recipients to the Holy Spirit. But Christ's role in sanctification does not cease once the Holy Spirit is given. In Aquinas' judgment, Christ continues to be present in the giving of the gift, a giving that is also consequent upon a being conformed to Christ. The dissertation builds toward an examination of how Aquinas understands this being conformed to Christ, especially in light of Aquinas' conception of faith as a knowledge of God, of Christ as the source and object of faith's knowledge, and of charity's relation to this knowledge, all of which are analyzed against Aquinas' strict adherence to the principle that humans cannot know God in his essence so long as they remain in time<br>Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2009<br>Submitted to: Boston College. Rose, Anton John. "Paul, Christ and time : an investigation of apocalyptic and salvation-historical themes in the undisputed Pauline Epistles." Thesis, Durham University, 2015. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/11351/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the subjects of history and time in the undisputed Pauline epistles, with reference to ongoing debates between apocalyptic readings of Paul, which emphasise the radical invasiveness of the Christ event, and salvation-historical readings, which emphasise continuity between the Christ event and Israel’s history. Current disagreements between prominent Pauline scholars such as J.L. Martyn and N.T. Wright can be traced back to similar debates in twentieth century New Testament scholarship, and the work of Rudolf Bultmann, Oscar Cullmann, and Ernst Käsemann, in particular. One broad area of agreement between apocalyptic and salvation-historical readings of Paul is the way in which they consider history in terms of chronologically-successive periods of time, and understand the significance of the Christ event in terms of its fixed place in this scheme. This thesis examines four key Pauline texts: 1 Corinthians 10, 2 Corinthians 3, Galatians 3-4, and Romans 9-11, arguing that neither apocalyptic or salvation-historical understandings can fully account for significant features of these texts. Instead, I argue that the work of Walter Benjamin and Karl Barth offers useful ways of thinking about history and time, allowing for a more cohesive reading of these texts. In particular, Barth’s claim that the Christ event is in history but not of history provides a way of considering the Christ event as both a concrete, historical occurrence, part of Israel’s history, and an event which is not dependent upon or limited to that history.

Radcliff, Alexandra Sophie. "The claim of humanity in Christ : salvation and sanctification in the theology of T.F. and J.B. Torrance." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/6603.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis critically engages with the Torrances' claim that all of humanity is in Christ. It explores how God has claimed humanity in salvation and the claim that He has placed upon humanity in sanctification. It argues that this claim upon humanity is not a cumbersome one, for God's radically objective act of salvation is the basis for the subjective outworking of the Christian life. As we freely participate by the Spirit in the incarnate Son's filial relationship with the Father, we grow into the ontological reality of who we are in Christ. Part One critically examines how the salvation wrought for us by the triune God of grace is filial, ontological and objective. It challenges soteriologies that have an overarching federal or external framework which lead to people being thrown back upon their own subjective endeavours to gain salvation. Part Two extends the implications of the Torrances'soteriology to the outworking of our sanctification. It roots sanctification objectively with justification in Christ, challenging the belief that, having been justified by God, it is now our part to work out our own sanctification; Affirming humanity's new eschatological orientation in the risen humanity of Christ, it argues for confidence in the nature of our humanity and in the outworking of sanctification. Thus it challenges external paradigms that can only offer a poor perspective on humanity and demand our own ineffectual efforts. It presents the outworking of sanctification in dynamic, relational terms, rather than static, moralistic terms, as the free gift of participating by the Spirit in the Son's intimate communion with the Father.

Abstract:
The Evil is a reality which has always caused shock and astonishment to people. According to it, several different sense systems have been created by society in order to answer questions about physical and moral damages that are brought to human consciousness. The Christian faith holds that the ultimate salvation from Evil is in Jesus Christ, the definitve revelation of God’s presence with the human being who seeks a way out of the contradictions of existence. However, despite the hope awaken by the easter of Jesus Christ, and even with the expectations of the earliest Christian communities about the imminent end the suffering of this world, the Evil remains as a cold and cruel reality. How to deal with teh faith in Jesus Christ as the universal savior and the persistence of the Evil in history? According to the Spanish theologian Andrés Torres Queiruga, any attempt to the Christian answer to this question must be similar to the loving face of God revealed by Jesus Christ. But, we cannot forget about the other two facts: first, the rising of modernity, with its consciousness of human autonomy and the cosmos, and that it is suspicious of any defense of empirical interventions of God immanent in reality; the second one; the rigor of the concept, this way we have a reflection that is restless in the search of a logical discourse, even when it is related to a so difficult subject, avoiding sticking to the result of the inconherence and failed consideration of the mistery quickly.

Abstract:
This thesis considers the relationship between soteriology, missiology and pedagogy in fresh expressions of church. Having identified the key theological and pedagogical challenges for the fresh expressions of church movement, three heuristic models of the dominant contemporary approaches to Christian education are identified, positing a direct relationship between soteriological and missiological beliefs and the consequential pedagogical praxis of Christian communities. The methodology of the qualitative research is shown to be grounded within the field of practical theology and utilizes a critical realist framework for the ethnographic approach undertaken in the participant observation of three fresh expressions of church. The pedagogical praxis, soteriological and missiological beliefs of the three communities are thus outlined and analysed, allowing the ethnographic data to critique, and be critiqued by, the heuristic models put forward. The three models are shown to be in part upheld by the praxis of the three communities whilst the data analysis challenges the integrity of the theological diversity of the fresh expressions of church movement and calls for further research to be undertaken on identifying the nature and purpose of Christian education with, and for, the unchurched.

Abstract:
At a time when Angola looks into the raw material resources and democracy as the opportunities for development, it is urgent to pause on the question of human resources. A true development necessarily means the promotion of the human person and its lived culture through the dialectics of life and death. Our research on "Cultural Exclusion and Salvation in Jesus Christ in the present context of Angola" takes man in his cultural and religious conditions. So, facing exclusion as a denial of the humaneness of the other and the salvation promised to all men, we propose an inclusion as a salvific force laid down by Jesus the Messiah and as announced in the Gospels, the inclusion to realise in all modes : political, social, religious and cultural. In proposing inclusion as a paradigm of salvation, we emphasize on the mission of the Church which is essentially an active witness of Jesus Christ of which the pro-existence reveals the face of inclusive love of God understood as the mercy and a total gift of life

Donoho, Stephen Halley. ""[A] humbled China will be more open to receive the salvation of Jesus Christ!" : two church periodicals' views on the Cing-Japanese war and Japanese-Táiwanese war." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/31432.

Full text
Abstract:
There is writing about how nineteenth-century churchgoers' views of other countries were formed by church periodicals. And there is writing about how opinions of the Cing and Japanese Empires were changed by the 'Cing-Japanese War of 1894-1895' ('First Sino-Japanese War'; 'Jiá-wǔ War'), and the 'Japanese-Táiwanese War of 1895'. But, there are no works making connections between these bodies of writing. This work makes such a connection through a comparison of writing about the wars in two church periodicals, the England-based Monthly Messenger and Gospel in China , and the Táiwan-based 'Dāi-lám Church News' ('Dāi-lám Hu-siá n Gào-ho ê -b e'). It makes the argument that the periodicals' writers and editors were on the side of the Japanese, as it seemed to them that Japanese success against the Cing Empire, and Japanese rule in Tái-wan, would make Western ways commoner in these places, which would be good for the Protestant Churches there. But the writers and editors had to give their opinions differently, as their readers were in different positions with respect to the wars. The Monthly Messenger's readers were in England; nothing the writers said about the war would make them any less safe, and so in both wars the periodical gave its support to the Japanese loudly and frequently. But the Church News' readers and writers were in Tái-wan. Openly supporting an attacking country could put them in danger, so the writers said nothing for or against any side in the first war, and were but quietly against the Táiwanese Republic in the second.

McSwain, Jeffrey Y. "Simul sanctification : Karl Barth's appropriation of Luther's dictum 'simul iustus et peccator'." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/11818.

Full text
Abstract:
‘Simul sanctification' is a transformational program for sanctification derived from Karl Barth's radical appropriation of Luther's dictum simul iustus et peccator. Barth's simul establishes the Christological link of the Second Adam with every human being. From this emerges what I contend is a ‘Chalcedonian anthropology' built on a double-duality: the original Chalcedonian formulation gives rise to a second duality revealed within Christ's one human person—the duality of a true, iustus humanity and a corrupt, peccator humanity. In order to appreciate the benefits regarding Barth's Spirit-charged epistemological program for sanctification and conversion, it will be imperative to elucidate the comprehensive nature of Barth's actualism as a way of establishing Barth's view of humanity's dynamic and free iustitia in Christ. Central to assessing the threat of the peccatum determination will be an examination of Barth's theology of the cross, especially in regards to his single subject economy derived from the person of ‘Jesus Christ and him crucified.' Through Barth's assessment of the cross I exposit the similarities and the differences between Chalcedonian Christology and ‘Chalcedonian anthropology;' the latter duality is proven by resurrection revelation to be ultimately provisional in nature. From here I probe Barth's position regarding the annulment of the simul as well as its beginning. By investigating Barth's doctrine of creation I argue that Barth's simul is reflective of the original antithesis between God and nothingness, the darkness under which Christ first placed himself so that humans would know both his solidarity in the darkness and his victory over it. Christians continue to dwell in the overlap of the simul's two mutually exclusive determinations, but by looking through Barth's simul to our true, created and redeemed humanity in Christ we are equipped to interpret our lives and the world around us most hopefully.

It aims at bringing out the substantial content of justification by faith in Pauline theology, within the studied pericope (Rom 1,16-17). Then it examines the consequences of the justication s intelligibility, as the principle of salvation of man (Jew and Greek) through gratuity and divine initiative. The objective is to understand the notion of justification in order to detect its conceptual structure and theological concepts to which it relates, such as justice, gospel, faith, reconciliation, salvation, etc. In addition, the exegetical path used here presents a thorough study of Paul s understanding, which justifies man by his faith in Christ and the Holy Spirit. The conclusion suggests some reflections regarding the contemporaneity of the topic, rather than a hasty understanding that justification might essentially stem from Protestant theology<br>Este trabalho estuda os aspectos hermenêuticos da justiça e da justificação, na Carta aos Romanos.

Abstract:
This paper examines Wolfram von Eschenbach’s juxtaposition of contrary things in Parzival as the beginning of the road to spiritual salvation for Parzival. Men’s quest for fame and honor in the material, Arthurian world is compared to the divine Grail kingdom and the godlike women who shed compassionate, Christ-like tears. Wolfram’s message of peace and love for brother is examined through his use of symbolism, particularly through womens’ tears and turtledove imagery. Parzival, Gâwân and Feirefiz are compared in order to show that the love and quest for personal honor in the Arthurian world is a necessary step on the path to God’s divine love and salvation. Compassion and love for one’s neighbor must be learned before Parzival attains his destiny. How marriage teaches Parzival triuwe and how he demonstrates this characteristic are examined. Romantic love, emulation of women and divine love lead Parzival to his destiny.

Sim, Hyung Guen. "Wisdom and salvation history in the wisdom Psalms / by Hyung Guen Sim." Thesis, North-West University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/1844.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is an exploration of the relationship of wisdom to salvation history in the book of Psalms. The notional starting point of this thesis is a conviction that there might be a juncture at which the two themes converge because in certain psalms such as Psalm 78, the Israelite concept of salvation appears to have a close relationship with the wisdom theme. In the history of Psalm interpretation so far, the concept of wisdom psalm has not been properly dealt with due to scholastic difficulty in ascertaining the clear criteria of a genre. The process of scrutinizing the history of interpretation showed that the Psalms in their final form were far more purposeful than were previously understood. The major guiding principles of the method employed are: (1) 'the canonical approach' of Brevard Childs; (2) 'the canonical criticism' of James Sanders; (3) 'the canonical process approach' of Bruce Waltke; (4) 'the Christo-canonical approach' of Jerry E. Shepherd; and (5) 'the communito-canonical approach' of deClaissé-Walford. This thesis made use of these methodological principles by attempting to read the Psalter from the beginning to the end, and by focusing mainly on the final stage of the Psalter proposed by B. Waltke as the third stage, or the final and complete Old Testament canon associated with the Second Temple, and by purposefully limiting the scope of our study to around the post-exilic period. Having dealt with the issue of classifying the wisdom psalm, the presence of the wisdom motif in many psalms which do not fall into the wisdom category serves to add a didactic dimension to the entire Psalter. In so doing, we reach a conclusion that what we are dealing with is not merely the wisdom psalms within the Psalms, but 'the wisdom Psalter' as a literary unit. Then, it can be said that the Psalter is not merely an anthology of individual psalms used for cult, but was meant to be read also as a source of min , an instruction. This means that every psalm in the Psalter has pedagogical potential, which may have been the ostensible intent of the editor(s) at the final stage of the formation of the Psalter. On this premise, this study attempts to set up a strategy to read the Psalms from the beginning to the end from book I up to book V as a wisdom Psalter, with a particular focus on how the wisdom motif relates to the salvation history motif. The question did not merely concern their interpretation as disjointed pieces, but also what their presence in the book of Psalter meant in terms of the relationship between wisdom and salvation history. This means that the study is influenced less by a historical and form critical approach, but more from a literary and canonical perspective.<br>Thesis (Ph.D. (Old Testament))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2008.

Marais, Sarel Johannes Lodewikus. "Die koninkryk van God as sistematies-teologiese kategorie in die werk van JA Heyns (Afrikaans)." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/25347.

Abstract:
Johan Adam Heyns is probably the most productive and noteworthy Afrikaans theologian of the twentieth century, born in South Africa. He was a real pioneer in his field. It is a well known fact that the kingdom of God played a vital role in all of his work. In fact, he used it as a systematic-theological category, which flows like a perennial river of opportunity, consistently through all of his writings. It gave him the opportunity to be consistent in both his systematic theology and in his ethics. Heyns used the kingdom of God as a systematic-theological category to show clearly how man and God can be co-workers in this world in a dialogical relationship. This relationship, of which God is the initiator, are characterised by the covenant between God, the Father-King, and man, the obedient child-servant. He also used the opportunity to integrate his love for philosophy with his love for theology. This integration opened up a wide spectrum of thoughts, ideas and meanings which he could scientifically analyze, explore, connect and merge together systematically. His contact with Stoker and their shared Calvinistic worldview as well as their shared Afrikaans culture and Christian religion, together with the influence of amongst others Du Toit and Snyman, Oberholzer, Vollenhoven, Barth, Brunner and Berkouwer, laid the foundation for his frame of reference. Unfortunately there was philosophical flooding from time to time, because it caused him to fill the kingdom of God with philosophical concepts which allowed him to think of the kingdom of God as an ontological cosmic-universal entity. His philosophical background and connection also leads to some inadequate speculations in his theology and especially in his eschatology. Inadmissibly he didn’t always use the Bible appropriately, although his doctrine of Scripture and hermeneutics were satisfactory. Heyns could have explored the important part which prayer must play in theology more thoroughly. But he did pioneer’s work in Dogmatics and Ethics in Afrikaans and as an ecumenist and church leader, which we must really appreciate. Lastly his philosophical modus operandi also had a positive side. It helped him to differentiate between important theological concepts. Heyns distinguished between the rule of God and the kingdom of God, as well as between the realisation of the kingdom of God and the eschatological fulfilment of God’s kingdom. These differentiations were tested on some theological problems, including the question whether the kingdom of God is really an ontological entity, the Theodicy problem and the “Nah-erwartung” problem. It was found that these differentiations, when used consistently, have valuable theological problem solving abilities. Although Heyns perhaps didn’t realise this, and he weren’t consistent in the use of these differentiations, he must be credited for identifying and clarifying them.<br>Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2011.<br>Dogmatics and Christian Ethics<br>unrestricted

Abstract:

Abstract:
The introduction of this dissertation presents a brief summation of what other sources have ushered with regard to the question of who Jesus is. The problem we seek to resolve; the justification of this dissertation; the definition of some terminology and the main source materials employed, are presented in this chapter. Since the problem statement is crucial for a good dissertation, chapter two will identify this problem from the grass roots level and will show us the turbulent tides it has encountered through the early centuries of the Christian church. The Aftermath of the early Christian church was a string of one Word Symbols, or tides for Jesus. The problem of embracing only one Word title for Jesus is also explained in chapter three. In contrast to the One-sided Word Christologies described in chapter four, an example of some symbols of the Word that inclusively describe in part, who Jesus really is, is presented. Since this dissertation has a holistic approach, it is paramount for the investigation to consider a religious figure that embraces or represents a Christology that denotes holism. This is covered in chapter five. It is in chapter five, where the writer, out of necessity, is prompted to devote a number of pages exploring White's Chiistological conviction. In this chapter the writer uncovers White's perception of the great conflict between good and evil. Retrospectively, the writer absoibs White's assumption and perception of the person of Christ. This chapter also looks at how Christ's role and function is perceived by White. During this research, the way she used the various Word symbols of Christ, who is the over-arching prism of the Almighty God, was found to be of particular interest. White also provides practical, theoretical knowledge of how Christ occupies the believer's life, the world and God's universe. As in chapter five, chapter six presents the exposition of the Christology of John Calvin. In chapter seven the Christology of White is compared to that of John Calvin. A table of data that illustrates how many different types of Word symbols and how many times those Word symbols are mentioned by both White and Calvin are presented. Chapter eight will present the conclusion of this dissertation.<br>Systematic Theology & Theological Ethics<br>M. Th. (Systematic Theology)
