Abstract:
Abstract In the postcolonial context, language represents one of the crucial tools of cultural communication and is therefore often a subject of heated discussion. Since language constitutes the framework of cultural interaction, postcolonial authors often challenge the privileged position of Standard English within their writing by modifying and substituting it with new forms and varieties. The Trinidad-born writer Sam Selvon belongs to a handful of Caribbean authors who initiated linguistic experiments in the context of Caribbean literature and is considered one of the first Caribbean writers to employ dialect in a novel. His 1956 novel The Lonely Londoners reflects the possibilities of vernacular experimentation and thus communicates the specific experience of a particular cultural group in an authentic way.

The fourth is a biography of Phyllis Shand Allfrey, a white West Indian, who is of an altogether different race, color, and class than from the other three. Abstract:
This paper investigates the resistance of immigrants to cultural dominance of London society in The Lonely Londoners, a postcolonial novel by Sam Selvon. The Lonely Londoners (1956) depicts the miserable life of Caribbean people who migrated in hope to find better condition of living than their countries. The paper furnishes a theoretic ground for analyzing the discourse of the novel which presents the subject of resisting dominant culture throughout events and language used by the novelist. The paradigm of immigrants, their trauma and shock have always been the spot line of discussion after WWII. Through the colonial history there was a dominant discourse of Western cultural superiority imposed on colonized, with the postcolonial era a different discourse emerged through intellectual presentations such as Fanon, Said, Bhabha ideas and others who enlightened literary theory and criticism and theorized resistance and cultural identity. Thus, this paper will critically analyze the discourse of resistance of Postcolonial people in exile to ascertain their existence and identity. Abstract:
This thesis deals with the representation of multiculturalism in the works of Wilson Harris, George Lamming, V. S. Naipaul and Sam Selvon, the four most significant novelists in the english-speaking caribbean, notably from the mid-1950s to the early 1980s. It is based on a corpus of eleven novels presenting a wide range of characters, societies, periods and places closely connected with the English west Indian experience. In these novels that have been brought together under the headings the Guyana quartet for Harris, the Ego novels for lamming, the African narratives for Naipaul and the Moses trilogy for Selvon, it is demonstrated how each writer has given of multiculturalism a personal picture that is nevertheless complementary to his colleagues'. For Selvon, the bringing together of cultures and races is beneficial to the individual if voluntary and free from coercion. For Naipaul, on the contrary, uncontrolled interbreeding can have harmful consequences for the human being who is a prisoner of his her own group. For lamming, a multicultural society is inconceivable since past atrocities forbid any chance of success. For Harris, on the other hand, miscegenation, whatever its origin, is spread around the world to such an extent that it has become the prerequisite for the cross-cultural reconciliation of humanity. The four novelists' works, in which pervades the concept of multiculturalism at a time when the word is still unknown, herald the interest that cross-cultural studies will arouse in the west, but also reveal the limits of the euphoria prompted by independence in the former colonies where multiracial societies can be found. None of the works studied, even the most pessimistic as regards multiculturalism, suspects a deterioration in ethnic relations as serious as that recently witnessed in the countries of the English-speaking West Indies, South America and central Africa which are alluded to

Lin, Tzu Yu. "Detoured, deferred and different : a comparative study of postcolonial diasporic identities in the literary works of Sam Selvon and Weng Nao." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/10582.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides a comparative reading to selected writings from Anglophone Trinidadian writer Sam Selvon and Japanophone Taiwanese writer Weng Nao, demonstrating the link between these two authors’ specific representation of multiple diasporic models of Caribbean diaspora and Taiwanese diaspora respectively and its influence on diasporic identity narratives. This study provides a cross-linguistic/ cultural perspective on comparative postcolonial literary studies, which helps to move beyond the primary focus of Anglophone texts and contexts. Although the focused two authors Sam Selvon and Weng Nao come from different historical specificities and linguistic backgrounds that urge them produce their narratives in different ways and tones of tackling issues that they have encountered in each socio-political and cultural contexts respectively, their works provides outstanding examples of how contemporary diasporic routes—both geographically and metaphorically, have significant influence on literary productions that should not be categorised by its geographical or linguistic boundaries, and can only be fully understood by linking one to another from the legacies of colonialism and the triangle models of diasporic routes. The diasporic identity, as being illustrated in both of their works, has been evolved with geographical movements and transformed into an iconic concept that makes new forms of artistic production possible. Diasporic literature, therefore, should not be limited into traditional disciplinary compartmentalisation of national literary studies. By bringing the focus on the multiple diasporic journeys, the identity representation reflected in the literary work in this study helps to identify the complexity and boundary crossing within Anglophone literature and Japanophone literature, which have already transformed into literary works of being able to depict a more complex model of modern cultures—endless traveling and hybrid. By bringing forth the excluded Japanophone texts in the field of postcolonial studies to be compared with the texts from the prominent Anglophone postcolonial writer Sam Selvon, this thesis hopes to offer some insights into the reassessment of the literary status of Weng Nao and the significance of his works in the world literary stage, and, furthermore, to identify how Japanophone literary works might be compatible with postcolonial analysis.

Abstract:
This thesis considers how contemporary British literature helps us negotiate better ways of being in an increasingly diverse world. Britain understood itself as a relatively homogenous white society and reacted badly when commonwealth citizens unexpectedly began to return following World War II. Colonial migrants increasingly large presence, particularly as many settled and had children, challenged the myth of a pure Anglo-Saxon Britain and forced a re-conceiving of what it is to be British. This thesis particularly examines how colonial immigrants found ways to (re)negotiate their identities as British in the face of hostility in their mother country. Chapter One looks at how Sam Selvons The Lonely Londoners depicts ways early West Indian immigrants found to endure in immediate post-war, nationalist, Britain. I argue that while working class migrants found ways to survive, they did so at the expense of personal growth. Nevertheless, their tenacity laid down the foundations of a new Britishness on which future generations could build. Chapter Two examines Hanif Kureishis The Buddha of Suburbia. I argue that Kureishis novel indicates how second-generation migrants, who are often more psychically flexible, form their identities differently to their immigrant parents. They negotiate ways of being British via their heritage and immediate family, but also with peers, and across various boundaries including those of class, gender, and culture. Chapter Three considers Zadie Smiths White Teeth. I argue that this novel suggests how immigrants negotiate their identities across even more boundaries and increasingly take advantage of the changing circumstances of life in Britain. This literature indicates reasons for some minority groups disaffection and subsequent behavior and so helps us to better understand and negotiate difference. In the Afterword, I reiterate that, starting from Britains nationalistic fear of hybridity in the 1950s, the novels in this study show the trajectory of how colonial immigrants found ways of being accepted as British. While it must remain vigilant to possible peril, Britains social imaginary has expanded to understand the benefits of multiculturalism and of valuing all citizens as equal.

Abstract:
As humans we have a remarkable capacity to sacrifice for the future, and an equally remarkable capacity to shortchange it, leaving our future selves to pay the price. The research in this dissertation suggests that sacrifice for the future (patience) may be governed by the same rules that govern sacrifice for others (altruism). Studies found that (1) patience was positively correlated with altruism, and (2) patience was positively correlated with empathic accuracy, a measure that predicted altruism. A third set of studies found that (3) a pervasive influence on altruism--group membership--also influenced patience. Participants who expected to switch groups in the future felt less connected to their future selves and left more than twice as much unpleasant work to the future. This research provides converging support for the hypothesis that common factors promote altruism and patience, suggesting that we may be able to draw on the decades of research studying kindness toward others to promote a little more kindness toward our future selves.

Abstract:
Heat-induced gelation of bovine serum albumin (BSA) mixed with low methoxyl pectin (LM pectin) was studied by rheology and confocal laser scanning microscopy coupled with texture image analysis. The structure of BSA gels, characterized by light scattering, depended strongly on NaCl or CaCl2 content. In the mixture, a competition between protein gelation and phase separation kinetics was evidenced and depends strongly on intrinsic and extrinsic factors of the systems and especially on the nature and content of added salt. Therefore, protein gels can be weakened or strengthened by the presence of the polysaccharide. In presence of calcium, both biopolymers have a specific affinity for this cation that is traduced, for LM pectin, by its ability to form a gel. In the mixture, a composite gel is formed. A comparison was established with mixture containing b-Lactoglobulin

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter presents a critical analysis of the capacity of the nation-state to develop and implement effective policy interventions on behalf of national labour interests in highly globalized industries. This follows the consistent observation that, under neoliberal capitalism, governments have lacked the power and/or will to implement pro-labour legislation in the same way as they have done for capital (Fourcades-Gourinchas and Babb 2002; Peck 2004; Kotz 2015). This discussion is developed with reference to the Tonnage Tax policy, introduced by the UK government in 2000, as the key policy strategy to revitalize the ailing shipping industry (Department for Transport 1998). In the broadest terms, the strategy is a tax concession designed to attract British ship owners to re-flag their ships to the UK national register, retain the majority of their ship management in the UK and train British seafarer cadets (Selkou and Roe 2002; Brownrigg et al. 2001; Gekara 2010). The core of the strategy, i.e. the tax element, represents an alternative system of calculating corporation tax for shipping companies based on fixed rates and with reference to a shipping company’s total operating tonnage per year rather than its total income, which represents a highly reduced rate of taxation. To specifically address the decline in the British national seafarer labour market and the supply of British officers, a Minimum Training Obligation (MTO) was included for all British-registered ships, which simultaneously incentivized and compelled shipping companies to increase their cadet recruitment and training activities (Selkou and Roe 2002).

In 1975, disability activist Victor Finkelstein modestly but pointedly proposed an “imaginary example which turns the world upside down,” where wheelchair users lived together in a village no longer obliged to accommodate the able-bodied, who found themselves comparatively disabled by their ill fit into their surroundings. That same year, Peter Eisenman’s pointedly disorienting House VI was completed, intentionally confounding inhabitation by even the most robust physical specimens. Nearly two decades earlier, in 1956, Selwyn Goldsmith contracted polio in the same year he earned his degree from the Bartlett School of Architecture. With his drawing hand paralyzed, his life and career had to adjust themselves accordingly. His life’s work would engage his insights into both realms –architecture and disability – and in his seminal work, Designing for the Disabled, he upended established views on ‘medical disability,’exposing instead the idea that architecture was responsible for the creation of disabling environments, and, further, that “the architect can prevent people from being disabled when they use buildings.”

Abstract:
Though piping is one of the largest and most expensive types of components in a plant, piping vibration is seldom monitored in a routine manner. Piping itself rarely fails due to vibration, but the same can not be said for related components such as supports, welds, valves, etc. Typically the only time piping vibration is monitored is if high vibration is perceived by operators or is expected due to plant operational changes such as uprates or major component replacements. The procedure for a comprehensive piping vibration monitoring program is thus not as widely known as that for other components such as rotating machinery. This paper presents the steps involved with monitoring piping vibration, obtaining meaningful data and ways to interpret the data. It could be viewed as a primer to those who have never been involved with vibration testing on piping, or as a guideline and checklist for those who have.

Abstract:
Supervised learning operates on the premise that labels unambiguously represent ground truth. This premise is reasonable in domains wherein a high degree of consensus is easily possible for any given data record, e.g. in agreeing on whether an image contains an elephant or not. However, there are several domains wherein people disagree with each other on the appropriate label to assign to a record, e.g. whether a tweet is toxic. We argue that data labeling must be understood as a process with some degree of domain-dependent noise and that any claims of predictive prowess must be sensitive to the degree of this noise. We present a method for quantifying labeling noise in a particular domain wherein people are seen to disagree with their own past selves on the appropriate label to assign to a record: choices under prospect uncertainty. Our results indicate that `state-of-the-art' choice models of decisions from description, by failing to consider the intrinsic variability of human choice behavior, find themselves in the odd position of predicting humans' choices better than the same humans' own previous choices for the same problem. We conclude with observations on how the predicament we empirically demonstrate in our work could be handled in the practice of supervised learning.

Abstract:
There has been a growing interest in the construction industry for using materials with lower environmental impacts, in this context, stakeholders increasingly seeing wood as the natural and sustainable option for public buildings. Studies worldwide have already investigated modern structural systems for wooden construction. However, the selection of alternative structural systems is rarely discussed, alternatives are seldom compared. To close a gap this paper proposes a framework for selection of the structural system for a wooden public building based on a Simple Additive Weighting (SAW) multiple criteria assessment method. The proposed methodology is applied for the case of a public wooden building – shopping centre in Lithuania. Three structural systems (1) double tapered glued laminated beams and columns, (2) laminated veneer lumber (LVL) trusses and columns and (3) single tapered glued laminated beam and I type steel column are compared. The research allowed distinguishing the most efficient structural system according to eight conflicting quantitative and qualitative criteria, which, in this case, contains double tapered glued laminated beams and columns. Proposed assessment framework is relatively simple to apply, therefore can be successfully used in practice.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The paper deals with couples in de facto unions, especially the ones formed by a man and a woman. It seeks to define cohabitation and differentiate the rights and duties of cohabitees from the ones connected with the status relations between both the opposite-sex couples (marriage) and the same-sex couples (registered partnership). As there are seldom any kinds of agreements between cohabitees, special attention is devoted to the relevant legal rules in all the Books of the Czech Civil Code and their applicability to cohabitees during their relationship and after the break-up or upon the death of one of them. It is stressed that there is no difference between children born out of wedlock and within marriage. Once parenthood is legally established, there is no discrimination of non-married mothers and non-married fathers towards the children. And besides, there are special provisions that protect the weaker party: property claims of the non-married mother from the child´s father for a reasonable time and within adequate limits.

Pellizzari, Daniela, Alejandro Ramirez-Serrano, and Giovanni C. Pettinaro. "Vertical Pipe Inspection Using Swarm of Independent Robots." In 2004 International Pipeline Conference. ASMEDC, 2004. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/ipc2004-0682.

Full text
Abstract:
The work reported here describes a solution to the problem of inside vertical pipe inspection using a swarm of independent mobile robots. The proposed solution assumes the pipe diameter to be known, however, it does not make any further assumptions concerning the height to be climbed/inspected or the material and characteristics of the pipe. The robots considered are fully independent/intelligent/autonomous units and are able to connect to each other firmly as needed so as to form diverse rigid configuration structures (swarms). By exploiting the rigidity of such connections, the robots composing a swarm climb the inner vertical walls of a pipe simply by exerting together a force towards the pipe walls and by jointly moving forward at the same speed (as a team). During the joint motion, the robots are able to monitor their peers as well as the integrity of the surface by using a small CCD camera mounted on top of each robot. If one of them detects an unusual condition, it lits up and continues its motion waiting for all the other to acknowledge the situation by litting up them-selves. When this happens, they all jointly stop preventing in this way a sudden break of the force exerted on the walls and a consequent collapse of the swarm structure. In this way diverse pipe configurations can be effectively inspected.

Full text
Abstract:
During a severe accident of a nuclear reactor, radioactive aerosols may be released from degraded nuclear fuels. Pool scrubbing is one of the efficient filters with a high aerosol removal efficiency, in other words a high decontamination factor (DF). Because of its high performance, many pool scrubbing experiments have been performed and several pool scrubbing models have been proposed. In the existing pool scrubbing experiments, an experimental condition of aerosol number concentration was seldom taken into account. It is probably because DF is assumed to be independent of aerosol number concentration, at least, in the concentration where aerosol coagulation is limited. The existing pool scrubbing models also follow this assumption. In order to verify this assumption, we performed a pool scrubbing experiment with different aerosol number concentrations under the same boundary conditions. The test section is a transparent polycarbonate pipe with an inner diameter of 0.2 m. 0.5 μm SiO2 particles were used as aerosols. As a result, DF was increasing as decreasing the aerosol number concentration. In order to ensure a reliability of this result, three validation tests were performed with meticulous care. According to the results of these validation tests, it was indicated that DF dependence on the aerosol concentration was not because of our experimental system error including measurement instruments but a real phenomenon of the pool scrubbing.

Full text
Abstract:
Metal matrix composites due to their excellent properties of high specific strength, fracture resistance and corrosion resistance are highly sought after over their non-ferrous alloys, but these materials also present difficulty in machining. Excessive tool wear and high tooling costs of diamond tools makes the cost associated with machining of these composites very high. This paper is concerned with machining of high volume fraction long-fiber MMC’s, which has seldom been studied. The composite material considered for this study is an Al-2%Cu aluminum matrix composite reinforced with 62% by volume fraction alumina fibers (Al-2%Cu/Al2O3). Laser-machining is utilized to improve the tool life and the material removal rate while minimizing the sub-surface damage. The effectiveness of the laser-assisted machining process is studied by measuring the cutting forces, specific cutting energy, surface roughness, sub-surface damage and tool wear under various material removal temperatures. A multi-phase finite element model is developed in ABAQUS/Standard to identify and assist in selection of cutting parameters such as; tool rake angle, cutting speed and material removal temperature. The multi-phase model is also successful in predicting the damage depth on machining. The optimum material removal temperature is established as 300°C at a cutting speed of 30 m/min. LAM provides a 65% reduction in the surface roughness, specific cutting energy, the tool wear rate and minimum sub-surface damage over conventional machining using the same cutting conditions.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Several sedimentary exhalative (SEDEX) deposits have alkaline magmatism that is temporally and spatially associated to mineralization. This report outlines interim data from a study of potential linkages between magmatism and SEDEX mineralization in the Selwyn Basin, Yukon. This region is an ideal study site due to the close spatial and temporal relationships between SEDEX deposits and magmatism, particularly in the MacMillan Pass, where volcanic rocks have been drilled with mineralization at the Boundary deposit. Alkaline volcanic samples were analysed from the Anvil District, MacMillan Pass, Keno-Mayo and the Misty Creek Embayment in the Selwyn Basin to characterise volcanism and examine the relationship to mineralization. Textural and field relationships indicate a volatile-rich explosive eruptive volcanic system in the MacMillan Pass region in comparison to the Anvil District, which is typically effusive in nature. High proportions of calcite and ankerite in comparison to other minerals are present in the MacMillan system. Cathodoluminescence imaging reveals zoning and carbonate that displays different luminescent colours within the same sample, likely indicating multiple generations of carbonate precipitation. Barium contents are enriched in volcanic rocks throughout the Selwyn Basin, which is predominately hosted by hyalophane with rare barite and barytocalcite. Thallium is positively correlated with Ba, Rb, Cs, Mo, As, Sb and the calcite-chlorite-pyrite index and is negatively correlated with Cu. Anvil District samples display a trend towards depleted mid-ocean ridge mantle on a plot of Ce/Tl versus Th/Rb. Hydrothermal alteration has likely led to the removal of Tl from volcanic rocks in the region. Ongoing research involves: i) the analysis of Sr, Nd, Pb and Tl isotopes of volcanic samples; ii) differentiating magmatic from hydrothermal carbonate using O, C and Sr isotopes; iii) examining sources of Ba in the Selwyn Basin; iv) and constraining age relationships through U-Th-Pb geochronology.

Abstract:
Paleozoic strata of the Selwyn Basin host sedimentary exhalative (SEDEX) Pb-Zn deposits, and age-correlative strata of the Richardson trough host polymetallic hyper-enriched black shale (HEBS) deposits. In both deposit types, organic matter is spatially and temporally associated with mineralization. We investigated the characteristics of organic matter in mineralization and unmineralized host rocks in the XY Central SEDEX deposit in the Howard's Pass district, and the Nick and Peel River HEBS deposits in the Richardson trough using Rock-Eval pyrolysis, organic petrography, and solvent extraction and gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS) analysis of the soluble organic matter (SOM). All samples experienced extremely high thermal maturity (Tmax up to 599°C), indicating they contain low SOM. Rock-Eval parameters S1, S2, HI, and OI values are low. Total organic carbon (TOC) values are low for Nick and Peel River and are generally higher for XY Central. Residual carbon values are universally high. Mineral carbon values are low for deposits studied (one outlier). Pyrobitumen reflectance is mostly below 5.80%. Full-scan GCMS analyses of SOM reveal that most, if not all, high molecular weight hydrocarbons, including biomarkers, have been lost due to thermal cracking and many detected peaks are likely due to contaminants introduced during sampling.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
We have seen drastic changes in the music profession during the last 20 years, and consequently an increase of new professional opportunities, roles and identities. We can see elements of a collective identity in classically trained musicians who from childhood have been introduced to centuries old, institutionalized traditions around the performers’ role and the work-concept. Respect for the composer and his work can lead to a fear of failure and a perfectionist value system that permeates the classical music. We have to question whether music education has become a ready-made prototype of certain trajectories, with a predictable outcome represented by more or less generic types of musicians who interchangeably are able play the same, limited canonized repertoire, in more or less the same way. Where is the resistance and obstacles, the detours and the unique and fearless individual choices? It is a paradox that within the traditional master-student model, the student is told how to think, play and relate to established truths, while a sustainable musical career is based upon questioning the very same things. A fundamental principle of an independent musical career is to develop a capacity for critical reflection and a healthy opposition towards uncontested truths. However, the unison demands for modernization of institutions and their role cannot be solved with a quick fix, we must look at who we are and who we have been to look at who we can become. Central here is the question of how the music students perceive their own identity and role. To make the leap from a traditional instrumentalist role to an artist /curator role requires commitment in an entirely different way. In this article, I will examine question of identity - how identity may be constituted through musical and educational experiences. The article will discuss why identity work is a key area in the development of a sustainable music career and it will investigate how we can approach this and suggest some possible ways in this work. We shall see how identity work can be about unfolding possible future selves (Marcus & Nurius, 1986), develop and evolve one’s own personal journey and narrative. Central is how identity develops linguistically by seeing other possibilities: "identity is formed out of the discourses - in the broadest sense - that are available to us ..." (Ruud, 2013). The question is: How can higher music education (HME) facilitate students in their identity work in the process of constructing their professional identities? I draw on my own experience as a classically educated musician in the discussion.
