Abstract:
The Synod of Ancyra was organized at 358 by Basil, bishop of this city. The bishops who took part in this Synod published a Synodical Letter, called in English Manifesto. They presented in this letter the essence of the Homoiousian theology (it also written Homoeousians). They did not accept the Nicaean concept of equality of the Son to the Father, expressed by the term homoousios (consubstantial). They proposed other idioms, especially homoios kat ousian (similar to the Father according the essence); sometimes they used the term homoiousios (similar to the Father in all things). According to the teaching of the Homoiousians, the Son possessed the Divinity not in himself, but by the participation in Father’s Divinity. Athanasius of Alexandria expressed quite positive opinion about the theology of the Synod of Ancyra. Maybe he did know it very well; maybe he tried to see positive elements in it, because the Homoiousians were in opposition to the extreme Arianism. Hilary of Poitiers expressed also a positive opinion about the Manifesto of Ancyra. He appreciated its moderate position in Christology in comparison to the extreme Arians. He supposed that the above mentioned terms used by the bishops of Ancyra had the same meaning as the Nicaean term homoousios. Both Athanasius and Hilary did not pay much attention on terms but especially on the relation of the Son to the Father; he distinguished the identity of each Person; he was conscious of the difference of their mission, and he underlined the equality of their Divine nature and dignity.

Abstract:
This article deals with the reception of Athanasius in systematic theology. The first section focuses on quantitative data. It turns out that Athanasius, though often hailed as one of the greatest Church fathers, is not quoted very frequently when compared e.g. with Augustine. Major systematic works do not refer to him at all, or scarcely. The second part directs its attention to the content of the reception. The core of Athanasius’s importance is found in his Christology: God became human so that humans become God. Soteriology and Christology are one and the same and this can also get the face of pneumatology: participation in the Spirit of God. Other aspects of Athanasius work whereto is referred, are his list of canonical books and his view on theological epistemology. In the final section the author stresses once again the priority of Athanasius’s interpretation of the homoousios over any other Christological model.

Abstract:
Hilary of Poitiers and Basil of Ancyra were unlikely companions. The former was a Latin bishop from a backwater part of Gaul who had only recently become immersed in the Trinitarian controversy. The latter was a leading figure in the East, schooled in classical Greek theology and a veteran in the ongoing struggle over the nature of God. It is also true that their political fortunes diverged significantly. Though both Hilary and Basil's parties “lost” at the Synod of Constantinople in 360, Basil thereafter slipped into obscurity while Hilary's pro-Nicenes would eventually secure political and theological victory in 381. This pairing is so unlikely, in fact, that scholars have long been reluctant to acknowledge the depth of Hilary's relationship with Basil. Among other issues, such a relationship creates a number of historiographical problems by challenging the traditional mapping of the various theological and political alignments of the mid-fourth century. In the traditional version, Hilary is commonly portrayed as the “Athanasius of the West,” who, in the late 350s, emerged as the leading supporter of the pro-Nicenes in the West. Basil, on the other hand, is regarded as a “semi-Arian,” who rejected the Nicene doctrine that the Son was homoousios to the Father, preferring instead to call the Son “like according to substance” (homoios kat’ ousian).

Abstract:
The effect of substance P on freshly dissociated gastric smooth muscle cells was examined electrophysiologically. Substance P caused depolarization, associated with a membrane conductance decrease, which led to the generation of action potentials and contraction. When the membrane potential was held constant under voltage clamp, substance P induced a net inward current, also associated with a conductance decrease. The net inward current resulted from suppression of an outward K+ current, one which resembled the acetylcholine-sensitive M-current in these cells. When substance P maximally suppressed this outward K+ current, acetylcholine (ACh) had no additional effect. Conversely, when ACh fully suppressed the M-current, substance P was without additional effect. These results indicate that substance P suppresses the same outward K+ current affected by ACh. Suppression of M-current by substance P was observed in approximately half (44 of 85) of the cells studied in these experiments. In those cells that did not respond to substance P, ACh was nevertheless capable of suppressing the M-current. Thus both substance P and cholinergic agonists appear to exert their excitatory effects on smooth muscle cells by inhibiting a common K+ current.

Butler, Carolyn Maeve. "Two sides of the same coin : patient adherence and staff turnover in substance misuse settings." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/25927.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis portfolio includes two studies, a qualitative grounded theory of treatment adherence in people who inject drugs (PWID) and a systematic review of staff turnover in substance misuse services. The empirical paper is presented first, the findings of which led to the systematic review. The qualitative interview study arose from observations made within a clinical trial for the treatment of chronic Hepatitis C (HCV). The Chief Investigator of the ERADICATE trial team initially approached the Adult Psychological Therapies Service to investigate what seemed to be an anomaly – patient engagement with HCV treatment had far exceeded expectations. Indeed, positive treatment adherence is not common among PWID. What is more remarkable is participants continued the trial while experiencing the highly aversive side-effects of interferon, a medication known to mimic opioid withdrawal. It is important, if not crucial, to acknowledge the wider socio-cultural context in which this thesis portfolio was produced; the political landscape changed significantly over the course of writing. Divisive judgements about what characteristics make a person worthy and deserving of resources, became more dominant in public discourse and heightened the author’s awareness to these aspects in the data. PWID are among the most marginalised, and stigmatised groups in society. Several of the participants interviewed were homeless and all were at various points on a relapsing trajectory of injecting drug use. Perhaps positive treatment adherence in this population is counter-intuitive because intuition is often based on assumptions derived from implicit biases. Indeed, until 2008, Scottish policy systematically denied HCV treatment to PWID. Due to the assumption that re-infection was inevitable, treatment was seen to be wasteful. Epidemiological studies now show is that public health is significantly improved when PWID are treated, as population prevalence goes down. Completing this thesis led to an examination of fundamental assumptions, not just relating to the participants or the data, but also relating to the question of what Clinical Psychology is. What can we contribute to the science of human behaviour? How does a self-aware mind arise and become autonomous? What leads adults to mentalize and enact their intentionality through particular behaviours, like taking medication? In grappling with these questions, the reader will detect the influence of developmental theorists, Vygotsky, Erikson and Bowlby. Seminal experiments, such as Tronick’s still face (Tronick, 1989)1 and Harlow’s monkeys (Harlow and Zimmerman, 1958)2, alongside newer fields of interpersonal neurobiology and developmental trauma have supplied the soil in which to ground the data gathered in this study. From our earliest days we are designed to absorb stimuli and integrate our perception into a gestalt. When PWID are characterised as “chaotic”, there is a failure to appreciate what this may really reflect: difficulty making sense of internal experience resulting in the absence of order, coherence and meaning. Therefore, the ontological presupposition underlying both the empirical paper and systematic review, is that humans are resilient, relational beings. When the correct conditions and contingencies are in place, our innate propensity to learn and grow can manifest in positive, adaptive behaviour. Narratives are not only ways of seeing the world, but ways of constructing it; we live through and are created by the stories told by others and ourselves (Murray, 2003)3. The public narrative of scepticism that has emerged around scientific endeavour, makes it all the more incumbent upon researchers to carry out their work with personal conviction, integrity and transparency (Rea, 2017, February 22)4. This qualitative analysis was completed with a high level of scientific rigour. Indicators of quality were employed throughout, for example, particular attention was paid to preserving the colloquial expression of participants in transcription and substantiates the authentic representation of their voice. The resultant grounded theory shows that the interpersonal context is a key part of adherence behaviour among PWID. This finding precipitated another question, if good quality relationships are important for patient engagement, how do staff stay engaged in the task of providing consistent, sensitive care on a sustained basis? The current evidence base on supporting and preserving compassion did not substantiate a systematic review, however, the opposite phenomenon, people leaving their jobs has been explored. As Clinical Psychologists we are able to connect with and influence different audiences by skilfully adapting our language. In order to appeal to managers and team leaders, the most pragmatic way of framing staff disengagement, was to examine actual staff turnover as a ‘hard’, concrete outcome. The methodological quality of studies included for review was reasonable in the context of methodological limitations. Findings point to the importance of collective support, good quality relationships and job satisfaction in mitigating against turnover in substance misuse services. This thesis portfolio is a sensitive and pragmatic understanding of engagement in both PWID and staff with the respective systems within which they are embedded. The results are contextualised and oriented toward medical colleagues working in HCV treatment, service leaders and fellow applied psychologists.

Millward, Melanie. "Addiction beliefs : do staff working in substance misuse and mental health services view clients with co-existing mental health and substance use problems in the same way?" Thesis, University of Leicester, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/8590.

Full text
Abstract:
Previous research has indicated addiction beliefs differ in staff working in Mental Health and Substance Misuse Services, but limited attention has been paid to this in the UK. Given the reported prevalence of clients who present to both types of service with co-existing mental health and substance misuse problems, and recent government guidance on the management of these clients within existing NHS services, the current study was developed. The aim was to explore whether any differences in beliefs about addiction existed between staff working in NHS Mental Health and Substance Misuse services in the UK, and identify any barriers/levers to joint-working between services to support these clients. Staff working in Mental Health, Substance Misuse and Dual Diagnosis services across five NHS Trusts were recruited to participate in a survey study. Participants completed questionnaires designed to identify their beliefs about addiction to three substances (alcohol, cannabis and heroin) and were also asked to report their opinions about current/potential barriers/levers to these services working jointly to support clients with co-existing mental health and substance use problems. A significant difference between Mental Health and Substance Misuse staff ratings on the ‘Addiction Belief Inventory’ was observed; staff in each type of service held different views about addiction on the following subscales: ‘chronic disease’, ‘responsibility for actions’, ‘responsibility for recovery’ and ‘genetic basis’. Interaction effects between service type and demographic information were also explored. The hypothesis that staff would report significantly different beliefs about different substances was also supported. Staff comments about barriers and levers to joint-work were analysed thematically. Given that the current study suggested that addiction beliefs differ on a number of elements across services, and substances; the implications for intervention and joint-working are discussed in light of previous research and suggestions by clinicians. A full critical appraisal of the study was included.

Abstract:
Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a major public health issue occuring in the United States and globally. While little is known in general about IPV, understanding about the prevalence of physical IPV among gay men is even more obscure. Scientific literature indicates that harmful lifestyle health behaviors (alcohol and drug abuse, smoking, and risky sexual behaviors) are associated with the increased occurenece of IPV. Intimate Partner Violence in same-sex relationships is often unreported due to society's emphasis on "moral closets" or the fear of potential repercussions. As a result, very few empiracal researches have been conducted on the phenomenon of same-sex partner abuse. this study was conducted to examine the feasibility of enrolling 100 gay men from Atlaqnta into an IPV survey study. The survey was administered via Facebook. Ninety-nine usable surveys were collected. Chi-square tests reveal that being Non-White, using substaces (alcohol, tobacco, and elicit drugs) and non-disclosed orientation staus were all significantly associated with positive IPV reports. Overall, the study sample believes IPV is a health problem in the Atlanta gay community. These findings bear importance for the Atlanta gay community and public health professionals who must address this nearly invisible yet increasing public health issue.

Fischer, Zachary. "The doctrine of the eternal generation of the Son in the Trinitarian theology of Basil of Caesarea." Diss., 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/20087.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper explores the importance of the doctrine of the eternal generation of the Son in Basil of Caesarea's Trinitarian writings. In order to judge the importance of the doctrine for Basil, its impact on all of his exegetical and dogmatic writings on the Trinity were surveyed and evaluated. In his writings, Basil repeatedly addresses his belief that the Father and the Son is the one, eternal God. He considered this possible due to the Son's eternal generation from the substance of the Father. Basil considered the eternal generation of the Son to be both a scripturally warranted and philosophically coherent doctrine that explains how the Father and Son are indelibly same in substance and truly distinct persons. This study concludes that the doctrine of the eternal generation of the Son is essential to Basil's Trinitarian theology throughout his life.<br>Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology<br>M. Abstract:
There are non-uniceptual same-tracking mechanisms, mechanisms that same-track not in order to implement storage of information about their targets, but merely as an aid to the identification of further things. Examples are the various mechanisms of perceptual constancy, self-relative location trackers, object-constancy mechanisms, and same-trackers for real categories. There are also several kinds of unicepts, hence, of unitrackers, procedural, substantive, attributive. What begins as a non-uniceptual same-tracker might or might not be redeployed to serve also as a procedural unitracker, or a procedural unitracker might be redeployed to serve also as a substance unitracker or an attribute unitracker. This is possible because the difference between affordances, substances, and attributes is not a basic ontological distinction but is relative to cognitive use.

Abstract:
AbstractAddiction and its comorbid disorders lead not only to massive losses in lifestyle but also to a loss of values. On the other hand, therapy and thus healing always means a resumption of the value discussion. In the present case vignette, the change in values of an alcohol-dependent woman and her turn to the beautiful in the sense of a resource-oriented therapy are described. Enjoying beautiful things led the patient to increase the self-efficacy expectation; at the same time, it was the initial step to emerge from the victim role and to start a self-responsible life again. The Will to Beauty is an integral part of the Orpheus Programme, a resource-oriented therapy for treating substance use disorders and behavioural addictions.

There is a growing body of evidence suggesting that neuroprogression occurs in addiction in the same way as in other psychiatric disorders. Biological markers of neuroprogression will be reviewed in the light of the staging model of addiction proposed by Volkow and Koob (intoxication, withdrawal and negative affect, and preoccupation and anticipation) and of allostatic load theory. Chronic exposure to drugs leads to allostatic load or overload through these stages. Neuroadaptation in this process disrupts brain morphology and function. Evidence regarding neuroprogression in drug addiction will focus on neuroimaging findings as well as neurotrophins, inflammatory markers, oxidative stress, and accelerated ageing.

Abstract:
This chapter examines how policy issue substance matters for studying political preferences at the micro level, while reconsidering Poole and Rosenthal's analysis of the 95th Congress (1977–78). In their analysis of the 95th Congress, they find evidence that they interpret to mean that issue scales do not vary. The chapter suggests that it is possible to agree wholeheartedly with the low-dimensionality findings of Poole and Rosenthal, but at the same time, members of Congress have distinct preferences across policy issue areas. Measuring the preferences of members of Congress correctly is absolutely vital for empirical testing of theories and hypotheses as well as for inductive-based work on lawmaking. The remainder of the chapter presents five case studies of lawmaking, which show in a more fine-grained manner the impact of policy preferences across time and issues.

People do not respond the same way to any one particular treatment approach in any particular setting. Some need more intensive and/or extensive treatment than others. It is not unusual for a person with a severe SUD to engage in several episodes of treatment before sustaining recovery. For those who are physically addicted, medical detoxification may be needed before they can benefit from other types of treatment. Treatment is helpful only to the extent that a person sticks with it and uses the guidance of professionals and peers in recovery. The person with an SUD may use any combination of treatment programs, services, or community recovery supports. Treatment includes detoxification; rehabilitation; individual, group, and family therapy; other services (case management, vocational or leisure counseling, medical evaluation); and medications.

Abstract:
A family unit is a system in which various parts have an impact on other parts. This chapter looks at how families, concerned others, and friends are affected by a loved one’s SUD. Any family member may be hurt by a loved one with an SUD. The effects may vary among families and among members within the same family, but emotional pain and disruption of family life are common. Attention often centers on the member with the SUD, while overall family pain and distress are ignored. Individuals with SUDs often “underfunction,” which means that other members of the family have to pick up the slack and “overfunction.” This dynamic may change how family members communicate or relate to one another. The effects on families vary from mild to severe—in which a family is torn apart by an SUD.

Abstract:
The focus of this chapter is the management of substance misuse and addiction on the psychiatric ward in patients who have presented with a psychiatric disorder. Some patients will display other forms of addictive behaviour such as gambling, sexual activity, or Internet use. Where this is not the primary focus, the same principles of broad-based biopsychosocial management apply. There are a number of guidelines available, such as those from the Department of Health (the ‘Orange Book’) and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, and prescribing advice, such as the British Association for Psychopharmacology guidelines and The Maudsley Prescribing Guidelines in Psychiatry, that are useful references for the treatment of patients with substance misuse disorders and addiction. This chapter does not seek to replicate this advice, but does include useful and common scenarios that will be encountered on the general psychiatric ward.

Abstract:
Aristotle claims that sensible substance is composed of form and matter, while he insists that it is a unity in the strictest sense, that is, the same and one, rather than a heap. However, in what sense a composite thing can be a unity? He takes pains to give an answer in Metaphysics. The key solution lies in his account of matter as potentiality and form as actuality. But many scholars are bewildered by his laconic expressions of the solution, and there are mainly two approaches of interpretations. One is ‘projective’, which takes substance as a basically unified concept; matter and form are two derived aspects of the unity. Another approach is ‘explanatory’, which takes form and matter as the real components and attempts to explain how they can constitute a unitary substance in a time and across a time. The main tasks of this paper are to reexamine the problem and the two approaches and to argue that the manner that a substance is unified should be understood in the light of its coming to be; a sensible substance is a diachronic composite and a functional unity.

Abstract:
Children of parents with SUDs are at increased risk for alcohol and drug use, behavior problems, school problems, depression and anxiety, and medical problems. Children can appear fine on the outside but suffer quietly on the inside, especially if they keep feelings, fears, and worries bottled up. Not all people, including children, are affected by a parent’s SUD in the same way. Strong connections with school, religious community, adults and mentors (teachers, coaches, relatives, friends), and involvement in meaningful activities (academic, creative, athletic, social) may help offset some of the negative impact of living in a family with an SUD. Many children show resilience and cope with difficult situations, including having a parent with an SUD.

Abstract:
Our previous observations provided evidence that a bioactive substance (BAS) with inhibitory effect on platelet aggregation and with inotropic activity on smooth muscle preparations is present in aortic wall of rats treated previously with indomethacin. The ability to inhibit platelet aggregation was used for monitoring its purification and partial characterization. The original sample was extracted by rinsing aortic rings (1.5 mg dried rings) in buffer Krebs (300 μl) for 40 minutes at room temperature. The substance was purified by gel filtration (Bio-gel P-30, Sephadex G-100, Sephadex G-75) and ion exchange chromagra-phy (DEAE cellulose). In the last method, salt gradient elution was performed. Further purification by Sephadex G-50 resulted in removal of 90% of the contaminating substances without a loss of inhibitory activity. The main peak of both chromatographic procedures was analyzed on SDS-PAGE and PAGE with denaturing solvents. The substance was evident by Coomassie Brilliant Blue and periodic acid Schiff staining. In order to determine if the BAS was susceptible to proteolysis, an aliquot of the original sample (29 ug total protein) was incubated with trypsin (final concentration 0.3 μg/ml) and with chymotrypsin (final concentration 3 μg/ml). The BAS activity was not detected. An aliquot of the same original sample was incubated with neuraminidase (final concentration 1.2 units). The BAS activity was detected. The substance appeared to be stable for at least 18 hours at room temperature and 2 hours at 37°C, In addition it was stable over a pH range between 6.8 to 8.6, showing an anionic behaviour. The protein concentration of this substance determined by the method of Lowry was 1 μg/mlPartial characterization supports the conclusion that the substance present in aortic wall of rats is a homogeneous protein, which has a molecular size estimated at 55-65 kDa.

Abstract:
Background: Substance use and the association between substance-related variables and outcomes seem to be context dependent. We employed Latent Class Analysis (LCA), a person-centered approach, to identify distinct subpopulations based on contexts of marijuana use. We also examined whether the resulting classes differ in a set of marijuana-related variables that hold promise as potential targets of interventions. Method: A sample of 1083 Argentinean college students (64% women; M age = 19.73±3.95) completed an online survey that assessed substance use and related variables (motives for substance use, protective behavioral strategies [PBS] and internalization of the college marijuana use culture). For the present study, only data from students that reported last month (i.e., past 30-day) marijuana use (n = 158) were included in the analysis. Participants reported whether or not they used marijuana in different places (i.e., own house, party at home, friends’ house, parties at friends' house, university party, non-university party, bar, dance-club, outside [street, park], or pregaming) or social contexts (i.e., alone, with family members, strangers, boyfriend/girlfriend, close friend, small group of same-sex friends, ≥10 same-sex friends, small co-ed group of friends, ≥10 co-ed friends). Results: LCA identified a 2-classes model for marijuana use context. Class 1 comprised 40% of last-month marijuana users. Students within this class endorsed a high probability of consuming marijuana across different places (e.g., at home, at parties, outdoors) and social contexts (e.g., close friend and in small same sex and coed groups). Participants in Class 2 exhibited a low endorsement of marijuana use across contexts, yet they reported a moderate to high probability of using marijuana with a small group of same-sex friends or with the close friend, at a friend’s home. The two classes significantly differed, as shown by Student’s t, on all marijuana outcomes (i.e., use and negative consequences) and marijuana-related variables (motives, PBS and internalization of the college marijuana use culture). Students in class 2 exhibited significantly less marijuana use, both in terms of frequency and quantity, and less marijuana-related negative consequences than those in class 1. The latter class exhibited more normative perceptions about marijuana use in college, more marijuana use motives -particularly social, coping and expansion motives- and less use of PBS than students in class 2 did. Conclusions: Our findings revealed subpopulations of college students that are heterogeneous regarding contexts of marijuana use, patterns of use and in a number of relevant variables. These distinctive subpopulations require different targeted interventions.

Abstract:
The pedo-climatic conditions specific to sandy soils in southwest Oltenia determine differences in performing different phenophases of growth and development of plants, both between varieties and in the physiological behavior of the same variety under different yield conditions. Therefore, at the Dăbuleni Research and Development Station for Plant Culture on Sands, research was carried out on some physiological, biochemical and production processes at five varieties of bell peppers cultivated in the open fields and solar. Determinations of photosynthesis, foliar transpiration, the biochemical composition of fruits, quantity, and quality of bell pepper production were performed. The physiological and biochemical processes studied were influenced by the environmental conditions specific to each cultivation method, but also by the studied variables. Of the 5 varieties studied, the best results on the biochemical composition of the fruits were recorded at the Artim variety (8.83% total dry substance, 4.60% soluble dry substance, 0.19% acidity, 3.80% carbohydrate and 36.96% vitamin C). The production was between 15,387 t / ha for open-field plants and 108,574 t / ha for plants grown in the solar, the differences between the two cultivation methods being statistically assured as distinctly significant.

Abstract:
Solid particle ingestion is one of the principal degradation mechanisms in the compressor and turbine sections of gas turbines. In particular, in industrial applications, the micro-particles not captured by the air filtration system can cause deposits on blades and, consequently, can result in a decrease in compressor performance. It is of great interest to the industry to determine which zones of the compressor blades are impacted by these small particles. However, this information often refers to single stage analysis. This paper presents three-dimensional numerical simulations of the micro-particle ingestion (0.15 μm – 1.50 μm) in a multistage (i.e. eight stage) subsonic axial compressor, carried out by means of a commercial CFD code. Particle trajectory simulations use a stochastic Lagrangian tracking method that solves the equations of motion separately from the continuous phase. The effects of humidity, or more generally, the effects of a third substance at the particle/surface interface (which is considered one of the major promoters of fouling) is then studied. The behavior of wet and oiled particles, in addition to the usual dry particles, is taken into consideration. In the dry case, the particle deposition is established only by using the sticking probability. This quantity links the kinematic characteristics of particle impact on the blade with the fouling phenomenon. In the other two cases, the effect of the presence of a third substance at the particle/surface interface is considered by means of an energy-based model. Moreover, the influence of the tangential impact velocity on particle deposition is analyzed. Introducing the effect of a third substance, such as humidity or oil, the phenomenon of fouling concerns the same areas of the multistage compressor. The most significant results are obtained by combining the effect of the third substance with the effect of the tangential component of the impact velocity of the particles. The deposition trends obtained with these conditions are comparable with those reported in literature, highlighting how the deposits are mainly concentrated in the early stages of a multistage compressor. Particular fluid dynamic phenomena, such as corner separations and clearance vortices, strongly influence the location of particle deposits.

Abstract:
This research is intended to examine the amount of changes that can happen in material characteristics after retesting. Stress relaxation test is conducted on the same samples of the swine brain tissue for several times in small and large deformations. The mechanical properties of the substance are calculated before and after retest and the constants of the tissue, as mechanical characteristics, are determined and compared. Short- and long-term moduli, relaxation times and relaxation functions are of those data that are calculated and compared to understand how much they decay after repeating the experiments. The results show that applying different tests on one sample slightly changes the mechanical properties of the tissue and, as a result, it is partly possible to perform more than one test on the same sample resulting in less sample preparation, time and effort.

Abstract:
Oxygen is required in every combustion process, including the incineration of sewage sludge. When air is used to provide oxygen the nitrogen it contains is only ballast which has to be heated up in the furnace and which further increases the volume of flue gas to be purified. The process for partial oxygen combustion (POC) jointly developed and patented by Messer Griesheim and Infraserv Ho¨chst avoids this problem. In this process, oxygen is blown directly and transversally into the fluidized bed at supersonic speed. The first promising test results were already presented at the 16th International Conference on Fluidized Bed Combustion 2001 in Reno. In the meantime we have three years of experience with detailed operating results. Up to 2000 m3/h of pure oxygen is blasted into the two furnaces transversally via the supersonic nozzles built into the walling. This results in a highly turbulent flow which considerably improves the mixing and the combustion in the fluidized bed. Using the POC method it has been possible to increase the combustion capacity of the systems from 130,000 to currently 160,000 t/a. The hourly throughput of waste material suitable for fluidized bed combustion has been increased by up to 40%. At the same time the combustion air volume has been reduced by 15% and the specific natural gas consumption by 35%. This considerably reduces the specific incineration costs (€ / t waste material). Alongside industrial and residential sewage sludges with calorific values of 500 to 11,000 KJ/kg (depending on the original substance) and dry-substance contents between 22 and 60%, other solid and liquid waste material suitable for fluidized bed combustion can also be processed, including bone meal, screenings, plastics granulate, spent active carbon, building timber, contaminated packaging material, organic solvents and urea waste. Calorific values can here fluctuate between 1,500 and 42,000 KJ/kg (depending on the original substance) and the dry-substance content between 5 and 100%. The specific emissions, e.g. carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides per ton of incinerated waste material are reduced. Thus the POC process gives Infraserv a third virtual furnace at low investment cost, enabling it to respond to the demands of the market. With this technology, the status of “Best Available Technology” (BAT) was conferred upon the sewage sludge incineration plant operated by Infraserv Ho¨chst by the German Ministry for the Environment.

Abstract:
The paper features the mathematical model of calculation of thermal conductivity and viscosity for nanofluids on the basis of statistical nanomechanics. Calculation of transport properties for nanofluids for real substances is possible by the classical and statistical mechanics. Classical mechanics has no insight into the microstructure of the substance. The equations obtained by means of classical thermomechanics are empirical and apply only in the region under observation. Contrary to classical mechanics, statistical mechanics calculates the thermomechanic properties of state on the basis of intermolecular and intramolecular interactions between particles in the same system of molecules. It deals with the systems composed of a very large number of particles. For the first time in scientific literature are presented the analytical results for viscosity and thermal conductivity for nanofluids on the basis of statistical nanomechanics. The analytical results obtained by statistical mechanics are compared with the experimental data and show relatively good agreement.

Abstract:
Thermodynamic analysis of a combined cycle producing power and refrigeration (cooling) effect simultaneously using solar energy has been analyzed. The working substance of the cycle is a binary mixture of ammonia and water. The effect of variation of absorber pressure, boiler pressure, boiler temperature and superheater temperature on the turbine work, refrigeration (cooling) effect and net output has been investigated. For different conditions of the above variables, the first law efficiency, the second law efficiency and the exergy efficiency of the cycle have been investigated. Since the ammonia water mixture boils at varying temperatures, Lorenz cycle instead of Carnot cycle is considered as the ideal cycle for this analysis. It is observed that the first law and the second law efficiencies are maximum under the same working conditions, but the exergy efficiency is maximum at some other working conditions. The maximum values of the first law, the second law and the exergy efficiencies are found to be 21.72%, 27.30% and 62.53% respectively.
