Abstract:
Friendships are vital to emerging adults’ adjustment due to the rapid changes that come during this decade (e.g., leaving their families of origin, delaying adult roles of marriage and parenthood). Indeed, friends are often central to emerging adults’ lives and can afford immeasurable support as they tackle developmental tasks, such as identity. This chapter reviews the literature on the types (same vs. opposite sex vs. friends with benefits), formation processes, and qualities of emerging adults’ friendships. The authors discuss variations in friendships as a function of gender, sexual orient

Abstract:
Many theories of cross-group friendship are based on the assumption that friends are inherently equal in status. This chapter discusses the idea that, even among same-sex friends, this assumption may be premature. It compares evidence for two contrasting arguments concerning competition between female friends: (a) intrasexual competition is highest among friends, and (b) friendship nullifies competition between friends. The chapter argues that equality may not be as normative in close friendships as the field has intuitively assumed. It also discusses how acknowledging and embracing these diff

Christians who are same-sex attracted but single find themselves in a hard theological space. If they are remaining single, they often don’t fit the mold of contemporary LGBTQ+ activism surrounding marriage. Yet they often also face discrimination and hostility from their Christian communities. Using the voices of contemporary same-sex attracted single people, as well as the twelfth-century monk Aelred of Rievaulx, I discuss the significance of spiritual friendship. Aelred developed his idea of spiritual friendship, which has been taken up by several LGBTQ+ single people as providing a helpful

Abstract:
This chapter connects work conducted among the Tsimane of Bolivia with others and highlights the value and scope of social capital as a driver of competition among women. It further examines proximate and ultimate levels of causation to understand what forces instigate women to seek relationships with certain individuals and what benefits might be reaped through costly investments in maintenance of social status and networks. In particular, women invest in social resources such as friendships, kin-groups, and social status because they may increase inclusive fitness through higher quantity or

This chapter draws conclusions from across the book. In bringing together the various states of singleness, we see how current debates about both gender and same-sex attraction have impacted discussions of singleness in ways that are detrimental to a Christian vision of singleness. We also see that single Christians have been drawn to life in communities, broadly understood. At the same time, Christian communities have often failed at supporting single life. Yet single life tells the church important things about what it means to be a follower of Jesus together with other followers. Spiritual

Developments in the law, scholarship, and research since 2006 form a substantial part of the second edition of this book which sets the governance of personal relationships in the context of the exercise of social and personal power. Its central argument is that this power is counterbalanced by the presence of individual rights. This entails an analysis of the nature and deployment of rights, including human rights and children’s rights. Against that background, the book examines the values of friendship, truth, respect, and responsibility, and how the values of individualism co-exist with tho
