Abstract:
Bacterial populations associated with three different sample types from carcasses in the dirty area of a South African poultry abattoir were compared. The three sample types from carcasses before and after scalding included neck skin only, feathers only, and a neck skin and feather combination. The neck skin of carcasses after defeathering was also sampled. Aerobic plate counts, Enterobacteriaceae counts, and Pseudomonas spp. counts were performed on all sample types, as well as on water, air, and equipment samples from the same area. The prevalence of potential pathogens was also investigated

The detection limit of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) and ammonium nitrate (AN) in mixtures of Ottawa sand (OS) was studied using a Raman microscope applying conventional calibration curves, Pearson correlation coefficients, and two-sample t-tests. By constructing calibration curves, the conventionally defined detection limits were estimated to be 1.9 ± 0.4% by mass in OS and 1.9 ± 0.3% by mass in OS for TNT and AN. Both TNT and AN were detectable in concentrations as low as 1% by mass when Pearson correlation coefficients were used to compare averaged spectra to a library containing spectra from

Public Willingness to Raise Transportation Revenues, Priorities for Transportation Spending, and Preferences for Types of Transportation Revenues: Evidence from Montana’s Billings and Missoula Small Urban Areas. Montana State University, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.15788/1700173900.

Abstract:
This project analyzed public willingness to raise transportation revenues, public priorities for transportation spending, and public preferences for transportation revenue types using recent household travel surveys for the small urban areas of Billings and Missoula. The share of the public willing to pay more taxes or fees for transportation improvements was 44% in Billings and 36% in Missoula (including neutral or undecided responses). This level of public support for increased transportation revenues is perhaps higher than generally perceived by leaders reluctant to publicly support a gas t

Abstract:
E-scooter use is increasing, and with it, the number of collisions involving e-scooters. The rapid rate of uptake of devices has resulted in a gap in the reference data available for collision investigators to make use of in reconstructing collisions, data which is commonly available for other collision types. The main aim of this study was to consider the capabilities of privately owned devices likely to be encountered in ‘real world’ collision scenarios and examine whether manufacturer-published data is realistic. Common characteristics and observations relevant to collision investigations w

Abstract:
Colleges, universities, and secondary schools around the world are using the Duolingo English Test (DET) as a new way to assess English language proficiency. The DET offers many advantages to admissions offices and applicants: on-demand accessibility, low cost, remote test proctoring, and rapid score reporting, as well as an integrated video interview and writing sample. The DET also looks and functions differently from other proficiency tests, which raises an obvious question. If DET item types and administration differ from those used on other large scale tests like the TOEFL® or IELTS®, can

Abstract:
Since the introduction of COVID-19 in early 2020, COVID-19 stigma has persisted on social media. Stigma, a social process where individuals or groups are labeled, stereotyped, and separated, can result in misinformation, discrimination, and violence. The body of research on COVID-19 stigma is growing, but addressing stigma on social media remains challenging because of the enormous volume and diversity of rapidly changing content. This three-part methodology offers a standardized approach for generating (1) a relevant and manageable social media sample for stigma identification and research, (

Abstract:
The aim of this lecture note is to present the first prototype of an air permeameter for porous building material built at Aalborg University, Department of the Built Environment. This air permeameter setup is primarily intended for porous insulation materials but could be used for all types of materials fitting the sample frame. This lecture note also provides guidelines to operate this air permeameter and perform a state-of-the-art measurement of the effective air permeability.

Abstract:
Critics of privatization argue that poor labor force restructuring is a key concern and that governments should establish better retrenchment programs. Using new data from a random sample of 400 companies in the world, we test competing theories about the wisdom of retrenchment programs and their effect on prices paid by buyers and re-hiring policies by private owners after privatization. Our results show that adverse selection plagues retrenchment programs carried out by governments before privatization. Controlling for endogeneity, several labor retrenchment policies yield a negative impact
