The communication rate between the sensor and the supervisor in computer controlled systems is often limited. This thesis studies the robustness and performance of Event-Based Controllers applied to network control. In these systems, event generation techniques are of paramount importance, among them, sampling techniques with fixed thresholds are studied. From these analyzes, several tuning rules specifically developed for these sampling techniques are proposed. In addition, the

This study examines a type of event-based sampling known as Level Crossing - its behaviour when applied to noisy signals, and an application to cardiac arrhythmia detection. Using a probabilistic approach, it presents a mathematical description of events sampled from noisy signals, and uses the model to estimate characteristics of the underlying clean signal. It evaluates the use of segments of polynomials, calculated from the Level Crossing samples of real cardiac signals, as features for machine learning algorithms to identify various types of arrhythmia.

ABSTRACT In this dissertation I offer a critical review of ‘sound art’ in Johannesburg between 2005 and 2009. The term ‘sound art’ was coined by Dan Lander in 1989. According to Christoph Cox, Dan Lander’s lament that sound art lacked “any substantial discourse” in 1989 still applied in 2007. My intention in this research is to start such a critical discourse for sound art in Johannesburg. I argue that sound art is a distinctive practice in the city, involving the body politic and underground, surface and edge as characterised by Achille Mbembe and Sarah Nuttall in their recent major w

Dissertação de mestrado em Economics, Markets and Public Policies<br>Abstract: Hosting a mega-sporting event, such as the UEFA European Championship in 2012, was a big challenge for a developing economy like Poland. The Polish government had plans for the modernization of the entire country. Organizing a mega-sporting event brings with it many costs which may not be covered by future economic gains. Nevertheless, an enterprise like this also triggers numerous non-monetary benefits, which can compensate for the costs incurred. EURO 2012 was a great experience for the Polish people, and one whic

Abstract:
Techniques have been developed for measuring the temperature, stable species concentrations, and atomic radical concentrations during a transient combustion event. They combine the features of direct sampling with two spectroscopic techniques to produce relatively simple diagnostic techniques to obtain time-resolved measurements. In this study, a transient event was provided by a propagating hydrogen/air flame. Stable species were detected downstream of the sampling orifice by electron impact fluorimetry, while temperatures and atomic hydrogen concentrations were measured by atomic resonance a

Abstract:
Rare events have very low probability of occurrence but can have significant impact. Earthquakes, volcanoes, and stock market crashes can have devastating impact on those affected. In industry, engineers evaluate rare events to design better high-reliability systems. The objective of this work is to increase efficiency in design optimization for rare events using metamodeling and variance reduction techniques. Opportunity exists to increase deterministic optimization efficiency by leveraging Design of Experiments to build an accurate metamodel of the system which is less resource intensive to

Abstract:
The probability that a sum of random variables (RVs) exceeds (respectively falls below) a given threshold, is often encountered in the performance analysis of wireless communication systems. Generally, a closed-form expression of the sum distribution does not exist and a naive Monte Carlo (MC) simulation is computationally expensive when dealing with rare events. An alternative approach is represented by the use of variance reduction techniques, known for their efficiency in requiring less computations for achieving the same accuracy requirement. For the right-tail region, we develop a unifie

Abstract:
Simulation methods are used when closed-form solutions do not exist. An interesting simulation method that has been widely used in many scientific fields is the Monte Carlo method. Not only it is a simple technique that enables to estimate the quantity of interest, but it can also provide relevant information about the value to be estimated through its confidence interval. However, the use of classical Monte Carlo method is not a reasonable choice when dealing with rare event probabilities. In fact, very small probabilities require a huge number of simulation runs, and thus, the computatio
