Samuel Levine’s Was Yosef on the Spectrum: Understanding Joseph Through Tora, Midrash, and Classical Jewish Sources argues that Joseph, son of Jacob and Rachel from the Book of Genesis, was possibly autistic. Diagnosing people retrospectively as autistic raises complex “hermeneutic” or interpretive questions, including the possibility that our selective readings and attributions of recorded histories reveal more about our current concerns than past realities.

Abstract:
We know that Beckett had read some Russian authors of the 19th century who could have influenced his own works. More concretely, he was interested in the art of several personages of the Soviet and Russian cultural life. Another aspect of the same theme concerns the perception of Beckett's texts in Russia from the 1950 and up to our days. Thus, the article treats of the followings subjects : Beckett and the Russian classical literature ; Dostoevsky ; by Gontcharov ; by Tourgueniev ; the Russian 'meetings' of Beckett : Eisenstein, Stravinsky, Pasternak, sculptor Vadim Sidur ; Beckett and the representatives of the Russian 'underground' literature of the 1950–1970 : Joseph Brodsky ; Russian translations of Beckett : how to translate Beckett in Russian? ; theatre representations of Beckett plays in Russia. Finally, we analyze from the typological point of view the affinities between the works of Beckett and Daniil Harms (1905–1942), Russian poet, playwright and writer of the 1920-1930 who is often considered by critics an absurd author.

In March 1830, the Grandin Press in Palmyra, New York, published the first edition of the Book of Mormon. On April 6, Joseph Smith, Jr., organized the Church of Christ—Mormonism—in Fayette near the Finger Lakes. Shortly thereafter, Joseph's unschooled younger brother Samuel filled a knapsack with copies of the book and traveled to villages westward to make converts to what he believed to be the restoration of primitive Christianity. From these beginnings, a small army of itinerant missionaries gathered several thousand American converts throughout the 1830's.

BELLINI, FEDERICO ALBERTO. "Malinconia, degenerazione e abitudine in Herman Melville, Joseph Conrad e Samuel Beckett. Tre figure di rifiuto del lavoro." Doctoral thesis, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10280/1813.

Full text
Abstract:
"The Nigger of the 'Narcissus'" di Joseph Conrad appare invece quale un modo di affrontare degenerazione e decadenza. Infine, l'abitudine si rivela un tema centrale dell'opera di Samuel Beckett: un'analisi delle fonti e dell'evoluzione di esso nelle sue opere offre una prospettiva d'interpretazione della sua produzione letteraria. L'ultimo capitolo affronta infine il modo in cui queste diverse traiettorie creative costituiscono diversi aspetti o fasi dello stesso fenomeno, e rappresentano manifestazioni di simili processi creativi.<br>This study concerns the literary representations of the refusal of work in the works of Herman Melville, Joseph Conrad, and Samuel Beckett. In the introduction I deal with the definition of refusal of work as a literary theme and with the methodological issues of the chosen approach to the topic. In order to situate the analysis of the main theme in a broader context, each of the following three chapters focuses on one of the authors in relation to a sub-theme: melancholia, degeneration, and habit, respectively. The refusal of work in Herman Melville, and particularly in Bartleby, emerges as a reaction against melancholy and Romanticism. I read Joseph Conrad's The Nigger of the "Narcissus" as a way of approaching a theory of degeneration and decadence. Finally, I identify the centrality of habit to Samuel Beckett's oeuvre: an examination of the sources and evolution of this theme in his oeuvre, provides a more nuanced understanding of his aesthetic project. My final chapter addresses how these very different aesthetic trajectories function as different facets, or stages, of the same phenomenon, and as manifestations of very similar creative processes.

Roberts, Heulwen Mary. "Architect of empire: Joseph Fearis Munnings (1879-1937)." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Humanities, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/8969.

Full text
Abstract:
New Zealand-born architect Joseph Fearis Munnings (1879-1937) is largely forgotten in the country of his birth. Considering the importance of his public works in Bihar and Orissa, India (1912-1919) and his prominence as a school architect in New South Wales, Australia (1923-1937), recognition of his architectural achievements is long overdue. This thesis takes as its premise the notion that early twentieth century architecture in colonial New Zealand, India and Australia was British, the rationale expounded by G. A. Bremner in Imperial Gothic– Religious Architecture and High Anglican Culture in the British Empire (2013). My thesis argues that, considering Munnings’ colonial upbringing and English training, the styles he employed reflected his and his clients’ identity as British. It explores the extent to which Munnings adapted British styles, by incorporating features appropriate for colonial conditions. Drawing upon the work of Ian Lochhead on the achievements of Samuel Hurst Seager, my thesis considers the role played by Seager in mentoring Munnings and guiding his philosophy of architecture. Peter Scriver’s papers, ‘Edge of empire or edge of Asia’ (2009) and ‘Complicity and Contradiction in the Office of the Consulting Architect to the Government of India, 1903-1921’ (1996), also inform my analysis of Munnings’ work in India. To enable an analysis of Munnings’ work, this study divides his career into chronological stages: Early experiences and training, Christchurch, New Zealand, 1879-1903 Architectural training, London, England, 1903-1906 Partnership with Hurst Seager and Cecil Wood, Christchurch, 1906-1909 Work with Leonard Stokes, London, 1909 Responsibilities and achievements, India, 1910-1918 Contributions and achievements, New Zealand, 1919-1923 Partnership with Power and Adam, Sydney, Australia, 1923-1937. This thesis, the first comprehensive study of Munnings’ career, illuminates the extent of his architectural legacy in India, his significant contribution to school architecture in New South Wales, and asserts his place as an architect of the British Empire.

Daniel, Dafydd Edward Mills. "Conscience and its referents : the meaning and place of conscience in the moral thought of Joseph Butler and the ethical rationalism of Samuel Clarke, John Balguy and Richard Price." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2015. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:427a4657-7701-4c68-bb05-353100ee9a73.

Full text
Abstract:
Joseph Butler's moral thought and the ethical rationalism of Samuel Clarke, and his followers, John Balguy and Richard Price, are frequently distinguished, as a result of: (a) Butler’s empirical method (e.g., Kydd, Sturgeon); (b) Butler's emphasis upon self-love in the 'cool hour passage' (e.g., Prichard, McPherson); (c) Butlerian conscience, where, on a neo-Kantian reading, Butler surpassed the Clarkeans by conveying a sense of Kantian 'reflective endorsement' (e.g., Korsgaard, Darwall). The neo-Kantian criticisms of the Clarkeans in (c) are consistent with (d) Francis Hutcheson's and David Hume's criticisms of the Clarkeans; (e) modern criticisms of rational intuitionism that follow Hutcheson and Hume (e.g., Mackie, Warnock); and (f) the contention that the Clarkeans occupied an uneasy position within 'post-restoration natural law theory' (e.g., Beiser, Finnis). (d)-(e) thus underpin the distinction between Butler and the Clarkeans in (a)-(c), where the Clarkeans, unlike Butler, are criticised for representing moral truth as the passive, and self-evident, perception of potentially uninteresting facts. This study responds to (a)-(f), by arguing that Butlerian and Clarkean conscience possessed more than one referent; so that conscience meant an individual's experience of his own judgement and God’s judgement and the rational moral order. As a result of their shared theory of conscience, Butler and the Clarkeans held the same theory of moral development: moral agents mature as they move from obeying conscience according to only one of conscience's referents, to obeying conscience because to do so is to satisfy each of conscience's referents. In response to (a)-(b), this study demonstrates that the Clarkeans agreed with Butler’s method and 'cool hour': natural considerations of individual judgement and self-interest were necessary aspects of the progress towards moral maturity in both Butler and the Clarkeans. With respect to (c), it is argued that Butler and the Clarkeans shared the same understanding of practical moral reasoning as part of their shared understanding of conscience and moral development. This study places limits upon proto-Kantian readings of Butler, and neo-Kantian criticisms of the Clarkeans, while making it inconsistent to divide Butler and the Clarkeans on the basis of Butlerian conscience. In answer to (c)-(f), Clarkean conscience shows that the Clarkeans were neither complacent nor ‘externalists’. Clarkean conscience highlights how the Clarkeans positioned themselves within the tradition of Ciceronian right reason and Thomistic natural law. Consequently, in both Butler and the Clarkeans, the intuition of moral truth was not the passive perception of an 'independent realm' of normative fact, but the active encounter, in conscience, with reason qua the law of God’s nature, human nature, and the created universe.

Abstract:
Ce travail aborde également la relation ambivalente d’Agnon à la psychanalyse<br>Through psychoanalytical approach, the thesis examines the image of the woman and the couple in three works of S.Y. Agnon, recipient of the 1966 Nobel Prize for Literature, in which the couple and an object of desire occupy a central place : Agunot, a short story written in 1908 when the author is only 21 years old, Sipur Pashut a two hundred page novel written in 1935 and Shira a long novel that Agnon is unable to finish. Although some chapters appear in the press in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s, the novel itself was published posthumously by the author’s daughter according to her fathers will in 1971. After analyzing each story separately, the thesis evaluates by comparison the Freudian influence in the structure of each story, the behavior of the characters, the dynamic within the couple, their dreams as well as the void caused by the absence of the beloved person. This thesis also analyzes Agnon’s ambivalence towards psychoanalysis

Abstract:
This chapter explores the contours of Addison’s afterlife in the eighteenth century by looking carefully at Samuel Johnson’s varied criticism of his works over a lifetime of writing about him. In his final statement in his famous Life of Addison, Johnson declares Addison’s reputation secure from the ups and downs it underwent in the eighteenth century by determining that Addison’s works, like those of Shakespeare, had stood the test of time. In Johnson’s long journey to this conclusion, his work on the Dictionary is perhaps the most important landmark. By citing Addison so frequently and in illustration of so many common words, Johnson demonstrated that Addison’s prose had knit itself into the fabric of English and would therefore endure. Although the enthusiastic cult of Addison that saw him as a perfect Christian had faded by mid-century, Johnson saw his works enduring because they had, almost invisibly, become part of British social discourse, both linguistically and ethically, and thereby ‘given Addison a claim to be numbered among the benefactors of mankind’.

Full text
Abstract:
In this paper we try to derive improved formulations for laminar boundary layers in incompressible flows by using the concept of viscous potential flows, presented in Joseph [1] and Joseph [2], as the outer flow. Bernoulli’s equation is used at the edge of boundary layer to make the basic assumption to deduce the presented formulas. The momentum equation is derived directly from the Navier-Stokes equations and then simplified using an order of magnitude analyze. However an additional term, μ∂2u∞∂x2, remains in the momentum equation to represent the contribution of the viscosity of the outer potential flow at the edge of the boundary layer. The viscosity of the outer viscous flow shows itself also in momentum-integral and energy-integral equations. Numerical results showed that at high Reynolds numbers and low angles of attack the results of the two formulas are almost the same, but for lower Reynolds numbers and higher angles of attack the difference between the results is remarkable.

Abstract:
Accidentally, Josef Velenovský and František Mareš were both natives of South Bohemia and both carved their careers in science moving from physiology to philosophy as evident from conclusions drawn from their scientifi c research. Th us by the same token but each in his own way, they refl ected on man’s limited capacity for gaining knowledge and, by contrast, on the special signifi cance of technology which could not exist without thorough human understanding. On that account technology, which had made man’s work easier or helped him travel vast distances, at the same rate became a phenomenon that enabled man to force his will upon his surroundings. Th e inevitable eff ect of such conduct was the confl ict between man -created technology and man’s existential dependence on Nature. In view of the fact that the two scientists published their observations about the eventuality of technology being turned against man no later than the turn of the twentieth century, the topicality of their ken is even more surprising.

Abstract:
Josef Stefan was a professor of physics at the University of Vienna between 1863 and 1893. During his time in Vienna he was a fruitful researcher in many scientific fields, but he is best known for his work in heat transfer. He was a gifted experimentalist and theoretician who made contributions to conduction, convection and radiation heat transfer. Stefan was the first to accurately measure the thermal conductivity of gases, using a device he invented called the diathermometer. He also determined the diffusion of two gases into each other, a process now known as Maxwell-Stefan diffusion. His work provided experimental verification of the newly formulated kinetic theory of gases published by the great Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell. Stefan also experimentally studied the motion of gases induced by evaporation along a liquid surface, a phenomenon known as Stefan flow. In addition, Stefan received data from various expeditions on ice formation in the arctic seas. From that solid/liquid phase change data, he formulated solutions to the moving boundary problem, now called the Stefan problem. The work for which he is most famous is the T4 radiation law which he deduced from the experimental work of a number of investigators. However, his theory was not widely accepted until his former student, Ludwig Boltzmann, derived the same relation from first principles. In their honor, the T4 radiation equation is called the Stefan-Boltzmann law. Despite his varied contributions, little is known about Stefan the man. This paper gives some details on his life and describes the seminal work he performed in broad areas of heat transfer.

Abstract:
Our research aims at prevention of burnout, which can be a protective factor in preventing career abandonment and can contribute to creating and maintaining a positive workplace climate. It also promotes the mental well-being and resilience of teachers and students. Therefore, burnout of teachers is especially important in Hungary, as the gradually increasing professional and administrative burden, the lack of social esteem, as well as the changed learning-teaching environment and the methodological shortcomings of general teacher training significantly increase the risk of burnout. In our research, the staff of the Somogy County Educational Service Center has been involved, mainly special education teachers. The 116-person sample has been conducted with a version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory developed for educators. In our presentation, the test results are presented. According to our findings, out of the three subscales of the subjects' questionnaire, the highest scores were achieved in the Emotional Exhaustion subscale and the lowest in the Depersonalization subscale. However, the emotional exhaustion subscale did not indicate a high burnout value in the study population. The correlations of burnout risk with age and time spent as a teacher has been also analyzed. Problem-focused and change-oriented psychological counseling models are attracting interest in the international literature today (Egan, 2010). By strengthening resilience and supporting a sense of growth, consultation techniques work to strengthen effective interpersonal communication and help the individual plan constructively for the future (Bonanno, 2004, 2005; Kelley, 2005; Linley &amp; Joseph, 2005; Litz, 2005; Maddi, 2005). All of this are relevant to our research because we plan to provide burnout prevention psychoeducation counseling programs to educators. The literature also mentions the phenomenon of learned helplessness, which has its roots in childhood and is a breeding ground for both depression and burnout (Seligman,1991). Learned inertia can influence members of the helping professions toward passivity (paralysis, loss of control, hopelessness, unresponsiveness) and is therefore particularly burdensome for the individual, along with the challenges of helping professions. Results of our research shed light on the burnout level of special educators, personality traits important for coping and related burnout prevention (e.g., empathy, psychological immune competence) and the applied coping mechanisms that guide burnout prevention psychoeducation as a comprehensive concept.

Abstract:
A series of fatigue tests were conducted on T-butt-welded specimens made from high strength (SE702) jack-up steel. Fatigue tests were conducted using a pseudo-random sequence (JOSH) designed to give typical jack-up loading at two levels of cathodic protection. The results are presented in terms of fatigue life and crack growth evolution. The results for the T-butt joints were compared to tubular joint fatigue test data obtained with conventional fixed platform steels (BS4360 Gr50D) and the same high strength steel (SE702). The study indicated that for high strength steel joints with relatively short fatigue lives the influence of the cathodic protection level is quite small and the fatigue resistance is slightly better than that of joints fabricated from conventional structural steels such as BS4360 50D.

Abstract:
Colleges and Universities across the world have developed Mechatronics courses, programs, certificates, and even degrees in order to meet the increasing demands of Mechatronics products and engineers. These Mechatronics courses, mainly focusing on undergraduate level, consist of lecture presentations, well-designed laboratory experiments, and team projects. However, how to teach Mechatronics courses at graduate level remains to be an open area for discussion. The challenge is: what subjects should be addressed, at the graduate level, to closely reflect the latest Mechatronics technologies with much broad coverage and fast growing features, while distinguished from an undergraduate-level Mechatronics course. This paper discusses the approaches that the author used when teaching a graduate level Mechatronics course (ME285 Mechatronics Systems Engineering) at San Jose State University (SJSU). The course outline, laboratory experiments, and sample course projects are presented. The goal is to provide graduate students with a challenging, timely, hands-on, minds-on, and enjoyable experience in advanced Mechatronics. A suggestion of future topics for graduate Mechatronics education is also discussed.

Abstract:
In this contribution, a pressure wave supercharger (PWS) is investigated both at diesel engine and at combustion chamber test bench using 1-D simulation and experimental measuring. Moreover, a combustion engine supercharged by PWS has been compared using 1-D simulation to turbocharged one at steady state and transient operations. A pressure wave supercharger is simulated using a detailed model based on the partial differential equations capturing non-linear effects of gas dynamics. The work has been performed using the commercial 1-D code GT-Power. A concept of modeling used enables to integrate the PWS model with all other models which are already created in the commercial codes (like more precise model of combustion, vehicle model, etc.). The PWS takes advantage of the direct pressure and enthalpy exchange between exhaust gases and fresh air in narrow channels to provide boost pressure. Due to the direct contact between exhaust gas and fresh air, a mixing occurs. Nevertheless, this internal recirculation of exhaust gas can be used for lowering of NOx emissions, but at the same time it could deteriorate engine power as the result of a lack of oxygen. The internal mixing has been investigated using 1-D simulation and different possibilities to avoid mixing have been tested. The PWS has showed during the simulation work behavior it could fulfill demand on a modern car propulsion system. Finally, PWS measurements with a combustion chamber have been undertaken and compared to the 1-D simulation results. Using the results of PWS measurement at the test bench and the 1-D simulation the usage of PWS in fuel cell applications is discussed, as well. This work results from the collaboration between Josef Bozˇek Research Center and Renault SA.
