I have lived in Kyoto for 6 months. During the 6 months, I was intrigued by the Bushido spirit in Kyoto, the core of Bushido is the social stratification and honor unto death. I would like to use the architecture language to demonstrate the Samurai Culture. Earth, Water, Fire, and Air are the elements that I want to consider.
When the sword cut into the water, the water stopped for a while, and then it continued flowing, so I made a "Z" shape cut into the earth. I hope there is only a little light in the bottom of the museum. When the glimmer falls on the sword, the beauty of the sword will brighten up the dark room.

O presente trabalho procura aprofundar os estudos sobre o tema no cinema japonÃs do sÃculo XXI, atravÃs da pesquisa histÃrica e anÃlise fÃlmica. O primeiro foco da pesquisa à entender as caracterÃsticas que tornam o cinema produzido no JapÃo Ãnico e quais as particularidades do samurai, um personagem importante para a identidade japonesa e fundamental no cinema de Chanbara. Terminada a parte histÃrica, a pesquisa voltou atenÃÃo para os elementos da atmosfera cinematogrÃfica e sua importÃncia para o cinema de gÃnero. Abstract:
The thesis examines the samurai image portrayed within the film 'Tasogare Seibei' by Yamada Yōji and three novellas by Fujisawa Shūhei, upon which the film is based. An historical outline of the evolution of the samurai and their ideals is provided as a background to the works studied, with emphasis placed on the Tokugawa period. It is demonstrated that through their depictions of samurai, the novellas and the film make a significant social commentary about modernisation and Japanese values concerning power, status and wealth in the postwar period. Two of Fujisawa's novellas relevant to this thesis, 'Hoito Sukehachi' and Tasogare Seibei', have been translated here from Japanese into English. As these works have hitherto not been translated, this will facilitate a degree of access for English readers to Fujisawa's literature, which, aside from a single existing selection of short stories, is to date available in Japanese only.

This dissertation aims to analyze two Japanese animation series for TV, Cowboy Bebop (1998) and Samurai Champloo (2004) by Shinichiro Watanabe. The both series are emblematic by using a remix of the traditional and the modern, the Japanese culture and the West, generating unusual metamorphoses and creating multiple interfaces between various contexts and media experience (television, movies, games, manga etc.). The research analyzes the strategies of remix, typical of so-called post-production, on the dynamics of selection and appropriation of media products and objects of consumption, and their reuse in other forms and contexts, redefining them, as a focus of epistemological critical analysis. The goal is to analyze if the author s remix can be considered in fact, one author. In support of discussion, the research selected authors who have dedicated themselves to track the origins, functions and uses of the remix, and the modulations of this process in pop culture throughout the twentieth century as Lev Manovich (2005), Eduardo Navas (2008), Nicolas Bourriaud (2009) and Lucia Santaella (2007). Moreover, the theory corpomídia (Greiner and Katz 2005) explains how to avoid the deterministic analysis that consider the work and the author as objects and subjects entered by the culture. The analitic methodology for the both series, while remixes of Japanese pop culture, focuses on observing and reporting different sources, indicating their mediation. As media products, the series will finally be recognized as maps or overlapping layers, as the researchers specializing in Japanese pop culture has been discussing in recent years (Looser 2009, Igarashi 2001, Greiner, 1998 and 2000 and Luyten, 2000). The expected result is a reflection that will not invoke the traditional dichotomies between East and West and it is focused on analyzing the media culture, with emphasis on representations of corpomídia that appears as a mark of natural experiments studied
A dissertação propõe analisar duas séries de animações japonesas para TV, Cowboy Bebop (1998) e Samurai Champloo (2004) de Shinichiro Watanabe. Trata-se de duas séries emblemáticas por remixar em um mesmo cenário o tradicional e o moderno, a cultura japonesa e a ocidental, engendrando metamorfoses inusitadas e criando múltiplas interfaces entre vários contextos e experiências midiáticas (TV, cinema, jogos eletrônicos, mangás etc). A pesquisa analisa as estratégias de remix, típica da chamada pós-produção, em sua dinâmica de seleção/apropriação de produtos midiáticos e/ou objetos de consumo, e em sua reutilização em outras formas e contextos, resignificando-os, como eixo epistemológico da análise crítica. O objetivo é analisar se o autor de remix pode ser considerado de fato, um autor. Para fundamentar a discussão, a pesquisa selecionou autores que se dedicaram a rastrear as origens, funções e usos do remix, bem como as modulações desse processo na cultura pop ao longo do século XX como Lev Manovich (2005), Eduardo Navas (2008), Nicolas Bourriaud (2009) e Lucia Santaella (2007). Além disso, a teoria corpomídia (Greiner e Katz 2005) esclarece como evitar as análises deterministas que consideram obra e autor como objetos e sujeitos inscritos pela cultura. A metodologia de análise dessas duas séries, enquanto remixagens da cultura pop japonesa, concentra-se em observar e apontar diferentes fontes, evidenciando as suas mediações. Enquanto produtos midiáticos, as séries acabaram por ser reconhecidas como mapas sobrepostos ou camadas (layers), como pesquisadores especializados na cultura pop japonesa vem discutindo nos últimos anos (Looser 2009, Igarashi 2001, Greiner, 1998 e 2000 e Luyten, 2000). Abstract:

The Meiji Restoration was the revolution that overthrew the feudal regime of the Tokugawa period in late nineteenth-century Japan. It was also the time of the opening of the country to the rest of the world, and Japan had to confront with Western powers. The Meiji government boldly accepted the new technologies from the West, and succeeded in swiftly industrializing the nation. However, this same government had been aggressive exclusionists and ultra-nationalists before the Restoration.

In light of this fact, I investigate how national identity is linked to engineering education in Japan. My focus is on the Imperial College of Engineering (ICE), or Kobu-daigakko, in Tokyo during the late nineteenth century. The ICE was at the forefront of Westernization in the Meiji government. I specifically examine Yozo Yamao and Hirobumi Ito, who studied in Britain and were the co-founders of the college; Henry Dyer, the first principal; and the students of the ICE.

As a result of the investigation, I conclude that the spirit of samurai (former warriors) was the ethos for Westernization at the ICE. They followed ethical code for the samurai, the essence of which was lordly pride as a ruling class. They upheld their ethical standard after the Meiji Restoration. Their spirit of rivalry and loyalty urged Yamao, Ito, and the students to emulate Western technology for ensuring the independence of Japan. The course of the ICE's development reveals that non-engineering motivations shared a mutual relationship with the engineering education of those at the ICE.

Abstract:
The brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Stål) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), is an invasive agricultural and nuisance pest in the United States and an increasing number of countries abroad. In the absence of other long-term solutions, biological control presents one of the most promising H. halys management options. An adventive population of Trissolcus japonicus (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae), one of the most effective egg parasitoids of H. halys in their shared native range in Asia, was discovered in the Maryland in 2014 and in Frederick County, VA in 2015. Adventive populations of T. japonicus have also been detected recently in several other states and show strong indications of ongoing range expansion. Despite their importance, the foraging ecology of H. halys and especially of T. japonicus in the USA need further study. Small pyramid traps baited with a low-dose H. halys aggregation pheromone lure and deployed as vertical transects in the canopy of female tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle), male tree of heaven, or hackberry (Celtis occidentalis L.), captured significantly more H. halys adults and nymphs near the top of the canopy than at mid- or lower canopy, regardless of host plant. The majority of H. halys egg masses collected via destructive sampling of felled tree of heaven were from mid-canopy, and the majority of those parasitized by T. japonicus were also from mid-canopy, with no T. japonicus emergence from egg masses collected from the lower canopy. A comparison of sentinel H. halys egg masses and yellow sticky traps deployed as vertical transects in tree of heaven revealed that the majority of T. japonicus detections occurred at mid-canopy and that while both methods proved to be equally effective, yellow sticky traps were more efficient for this purpose. This led to the development of a novel T. japonicus sampling method in which a yellow sticky trap is deployed atop a bamboo pole in the mid-canopy of wild host trees. This method was employed to compare the effect of habitat type on T. japonicus captures in female tree of heaven growing in spatially isolated patches, thin windbreaks, and at the edge of contiguous woodlots. Consistent habitat effects on T. japonicus detections were not found between sampling years, but provided the first documentation of the seasonal activity of T. japonicus in the USA. A study of host plant effects on T. japonicus detection in mid-canopy yellow sticky traps did not reveal consistent host plant effects on captures. These data provide important insights into the foraging ecology of H. halys and T. japonicus in the USA, as well as efficient sampling methods for future studies of T. japonicus.

The brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Stål) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), is an invasive agricultural and nuisance pest from Asia that is widely distributed in the United States and is present in an increasing number of countries abroad. In the absence of other long-term management solutions, biological control via the actions of natural enemies presents a promising brown marmorated stink bug management option. Trissolcus japonicus (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae), also known as the samurai wasp, is one of the most effective egg parasitoids of brown marmorated stink bug in Asia. Samurai wasp arrived in the USA without deliberate introduction and was first detected in Maryland in 2014 and subsequently in Frederick County, VA in 2015. It has continued to expand its range in the USA and was recently detected in several eastern and western states. Despite their importance, little is known of where brown marmorated stink bug eggs, nymphs, and adults are most likely to be found in wild trees. Even less is known about where samurai wasp is likely to occur within its new range. To address these issues, traps containing a lure to attract brown marmorated stink bug were placed in the upper, middle, and lower canopy of female tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle), male tree of heaven, and hackberry (Celtis occidentalis L.). Significantly more brown marmorated stink bug adults and nymphs were caught in traps near the top of trees than in those at other canopy locations, with no effect of host plant species observed. The majority of brown marmorated stink bug egg masses collected from felled tree of heaven were from the middle of the canopy. The majority of samurai wasps emerged from egg masses collected from the mid-canopy, while none emerged from those collected from the lower canopy. In a comparison of sentinel brown marmorated stink bug egg masses and yellow sticky traps placed in the upper, middle, and lower canopy of tree of heaven, the majority of samurai wasp detections occurred at mid-canopy. Both methods were found to be effective, but yellow sticky traps required less time and effort to use. This led to the development of a new sampling method for samurai wasp, in which a yellow sticky trap was deployed atop a bamboo pole in the mid-canopy of wild host trees. Using this technique, the effect of habitat type on samurai wasp captures was examined, revealing no consistent effects on detections. However, this study provided the first documentation of when samurai wasps are present and most abundant during the spring and summer. A study of host plant effects on samurai wasp captures, also using yellow sticky traps placed in the mid-canopy of trees, did not reveal consistent host plant effects on captures. These data provide important insights into the interactions of brown marmorated stink bug, samurai wasp, and their environment in the Mid-Atlantic region of the USA, as well as an efficient tool with which to study the samurai wasp.

Abstract:
The thesis addresses the reception and consumption of Japanese fashion in the U.K. between 1980 and 2006 and concomitant constructions of Japanese identity in the critical discourses surrounding fashion. It examines the impacts of the sartorial traffic emanating from the Japanese fashion system, the creative outputs of which are polarised in Western critical thought as either unreflective cultural borrowings (Japanisation, appropriation) or as embodying an unfathomable Eastern aesthetic (zen, wabi/sabi, wa). Building on a substantive account of the cultural impacts of the initial encounters with the West, the investigation identifies sites where Japanese sartorial culture is consumed in the form of text, image and artefact. A variety of methodological approaches are mobilised in the analysis of data from retail outlets, cultural institutions and media publications. Material pertaining to "high-concept designers" whose outputs are largely consumed within visual and intellectual contexts is balanced by that from "high street apparel makers" operating in a more commercially-oriented manner. Findings regarding the role of an "intermediate matrix" of designers/brands employing creative approaches and retail strategies that supersede issues of culture, race and historicity are presented in order to map a creative continuum in contemporary Japanese fashion design. In addressing the imbrications of Japanese identity and contemporary sartorial practice, the thesis interrogates research findings from creative, commercial, critical, curatorial and mass media sources within a framework of existing academic accounts of the construction of Japan in the Western mind. The conclusion articulates new readings of the nature of "Japanese-ness" available to a globally connected audience and identifies a gendered differentiation between visual representations of Japanese-designed fashion mediated through the gatekeepers of sartorial culture in the United Kingdom.

O propósito deste trabalho é o de entender como os elementos gráficos das histórias em quadrinhos ajudam a compor os mangás. A ideia é analisar como se dá a construção espacial das páginas desse modelo de história em quadrinhos através de aspectos mais pregnantes, tais como, a sobreposição e o tamanho das imagens, o formato e a variação de dimensões dos quadrinhos, e também o formato, o posicionamento e o tamanho dos balões, das onomatopéias e das legendas. Usaremos como campo de provas a série de mangá Samurai X, nos momentos em que a ação se torna mais evidente através do confronto entre as personagens, tais como as ações corriqueiras e aquelas em que ocorre o combate físico entre os protagonistas e antagonistas. Para o entender como funciona a sintaxe visual na série Samurai X, serão usados como ponto de partida os pressupostos de Pierre Fresnault-Deruelle (1976) sobre a composição das imagens dentro de um regime denominado pelo autor de Tabular, isto é, como a disposição dos elementos gráficos em um espaço limitado como uma página, por exemplo, determina um guia para uma leitura multilinear. Utilizaremos também os conceitos de Tierry Groensteen (1999), que aborda a questão da articulação das imagens e dos espaços de uma página de história em quadrinhos, denominada pelo autor de artrologia, isto é, o sistema de códigos visuais interligados em uma página em uma dimensão do sistema espaço-tópico que visa produzir um sentido narrativo nas hqs.

La figura del samurai, in epoca Tokugawa, subì una sostanziale modifica della sua funzione sociale. La totalità di essi infatti passò a svolgere le mansioni più varie, dalla burocrazia a incarichi di natura impiegatizia e amministrativa, laddove fino all’inizio del XVII secolo erano sempre stati guerrieri, e quindi caratterizzati da una cultura della violenza e della supremazia tramite le armi. Questo fu causato dall’unificazione del Giappone sotto la guida dello shogunato Tokugawa e dalla dichiarazione di cessazione di tutte le lotte, che li lasciò privi di ragione d’essere. Utagawa Kuniyoshi, famoso artista di stampe ukiyoe, pubblicò una serie intitolata Taiheiki Eiyū Den (Racconti Eroici della Grande Pacificazione) nel 1848, in cui inserì i più grandi eroi che ebbero un ruolo da protagonista nelle lotte per l’unificazione. L’intento è quello analizzare le qualità attribuite da Kuniyoshi ai samurai, confrontandole con la reale situazione di quegli anni, in cui la fine del dominio Tokugawa, e quindi la chiusura della dominazione militare in Giappone, è ormai prossima. Si affronteranno concetti come l’onore, la disciplina, il rapporto con il padrone e la risolutezza nel suicidio, cercando di capire se e come questi siano mutati nel corso del tempo. Verranno prese all’interno del Taiheiki otto qualità, chiave per Kuniyoshi nel definire l’immagine del samurai, e per ognuna di essere verrà analizzata una stampa: di questa si prenderanno in considerazione il personaggio, la sua vicenda, i vari elementi compositivi e il relativo ruolo nelle lotte per l’unificazione. Oltre a ciò, si presenteranno altri tre personaggi, Nobunaga, Akechi e Toyotomi, inseriti per la loro importanza storica. Questa analisi metterà in luce le differenze circa la condizione sociale e spirituale del samurai in epoca medievale rispetto all’era Tokugawa, mettendo in luce il cambiamento sociale loro imposto.

Abstract:
This essay deals with the political upheavals which occurred in Japan with the Meiji Restoration of 1868 and its impact on the Samurai Class. This transitional period in Japanese history is portrayed in the film The Last Samurai from 2003, and it's the comparison between this Hollywood production and the current research on the subject on which this essay focuses. Two key figures who are portrayed in the film are Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise), an American soldier from the Indian Wars of the 1860/70s who travels to Japan to quell the Samurai rebellion but ends up in captivity; only to learn their codex of honor and way of life and eventually become a Samurai himself. The other character calls himself Katsumoto (Ken Watanabe) and becomes the representative of the Samurai's struggle for their existence. Their friendship and cultural exchanges will remain a cornerstone throughout the film. Katsumoto has his historical counterpart in Saigō Takamori – also known as The Last Samurai during the times of the Meiji Restoration and its aftermath. Closely intertwined with the Samurai come ideals in which the warrior must follow specific precepts and behavior patterns both on the battlefield and in civilian life. Bushidō (“the way of the warrior”) and the ritual suicide that is seppuku (“stomach-cutting”) therefore play a significant role in the film and become a symbol of the clash between the old values of the Samurai and the inevitable process of modernization according to Western standards. The film explores both the theoretical and practical dimension of bushidō and is a tribute to the Samurai; their ideals, living and learning philosophy and to their codex of honor. It also depicts the unexpected and forbidden friendship between a Samurai and a soldier with their separate Western and Eastern values – which ultimately results in their common defeat before the new age in Japan.

The focus of my recearch was the negotiation of 'identity' for Japanese, Japanese descendants, and people without Japanese ancestry living in Brazil with a vehicle a sport called Kendo [Japanese fencing]. In this martial practice noticed a disciplining of the body and attitudes that consciously and unconsciously defines negotiations of 'identity and difference' established social relationships activated by practitioners. The research problem was located as the negotiation process of 'Japanese identity' and its moral postulate in Brazil with regard to this martial practice. And as she and all ethical and moral training in due to contact with immigrant teachers provide support for such a Japanese ontology. The hypothesis that I favor is the hallmark of an unconscious system of value that allows the classification in terms of proximity and distance in relation to a particular notion of Japaneseness. In short, there are characters to biological properties which make the ratings, but the closer it is knowledge of the Japanese. Kendo, taken as an unit of analysis is a machine, a device of Japaneseness - that is, a mechanism for the production of 'Japanese' myth and rith speeches, re-designed and updated from an objective and subjective body-size.
O foco de minha pesquisa foi a negociação de 'identidades' para japoneses, descendentes de japoneses e pessoas sem ascendência nipônica residentes no Brasil tendo por veículo uma prática esportiva designada por Kendo [esgrima japonesa]. Nesta prática marcial observo uma disciplinarização do corpo e das atitudes que delimita consciente e inconscientemente uma negociação de 'identidade e diferença' demonstrada nas relações sociais ativadas pelos praticantes. O problema da pesquisa foi situar como se processa a negociação da 'identidade japonesa e seu postulado moral no Brasil no tocante a esta prática corporal-marcial. E como ela e o conjunto ético-moral decorrente do treinamento e do contato com professores imigrantes fornecem um suporte a essa ontologia nipônica. A hipótese que defendo é a indicação de um sistema inconsciente de valor que permite a classificação em termos de proximidade e distância em relação a uma dada atualização de japonesidade. Em suma, não são os caracteres biológico-fenotipicos que fazem as classificações, mas sim, quanto mais próximo se está dos conhecimentos sobre os japoneses. O Kendo, tomado como uma unidade de análise é uma máquina, um dispositivo de japonesidades ou seja, um mecanismo de produção de 'japoneses' e de discursos 'mito-ríticos', re-elaborados e atualizados a partir de uma dimensão corpórea objetiva e subjetiva.

Esso è stato oggetto di dibattito e di ricerca sia a livello nazionale che internazionale sin dalla fine dell'Ottocento, e costituisce tuttora un aspetto molto controverso della storia e della cultura giapponese. Se ne ripercorreranno le origini storiche, i fattori che hanno influenzato il pensiero dei suoi teorici, le virtù e le idee fondamentali che ne sono alla base attraverso un confronto tra l'interpretazione popolare del bushidō e un'alternativa proposta da studi recenti.

Le modalità di distribuzione cinematografica si sono evolute contestualmente ai cambiamenti dell’industria contemporanea. In particolare, i progetti indipendenti hanno dovuto elaborare le più variegate strategie per fronteggiare le sfide sempre maggiori della distribuzione, nazionale e internazionale. In questo elaborato si analizzano innanzitutto le tecniche di distribuzione dei film indipendenti durante tutte le fasi del film: pre-produzione, produzione, post-produzione. In seguito, si presentano le caratteristiche dell’industria cinematografica giapponese nella sua evoluzione dagli anni Cinquanta ad oggi, sottolineandone le differenze con l’industria cinematografica occidentale. Poi si introducono le tre coppie di film esaminati divise per periodo storico, analizzandone la traduzione dei titoli, le locandine e il montaggio del trailer. Il confronto dei metodi di distribuzione di ciascuna coppia di film permetterà infine di determinare se si è realizzato un modello tradizionale di distribuzione internazionale o altrimenti. Gli anni Cinquanta sono rappresentati da “I sette samurai”, per la regia di Akira Kurosawa, e “La strada”, diretto da Federico Fellini. “A Snake of June”, di Shin’ya Tsukamoto, e “La vita è bella”, di Roberto Benigni, esemplificano gli anni Novanta. “Your Name.”, diretto da Makoto Shinkai, e “Lo chiamavano Jeeg Robot”, diretto da Gabriele Mainetti, rappresentano invece gli esempi del periodo contemporaneo.

У статті зазначено, що незважаючи на значні відмінності між лицарями і самураями, спільним і виправданим залишалося тільки одне: вони намагалися дотримуватися честі, благородства і вірності тим, кому служили. Різний менталітет породжував відмінне ставлення до речей і явищ: і самураї, і лицарі мали різні підходи до того, щоб проявляти свою відвагу і хоробрість. В статье указано, что несмотря на значительные различия между рыцарями и самураями, общим и оправданным оставалось только одно: они старались придерживаться чести, благородства и верности тем, кому служили. Разный менталитет порождал отличительное отношение к вещам и явлениям: и самураи, и рыцари имели разные подходы к тому, чтобы проявлять свою отвагу и храбрость. The article states that despite the significant differences between knights and samurai, only one thing remained common and justified: they tried to maintain honor, nobility and loyalty to those they served. Different mentalities gave rise to different attitudes to things and phenomena: both samurai and knights had different approaches to showing their courage and bravery.

Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo analisar os debates em torno da imigração japonesa nas revistas ilustradas brasileiras publicadas nas cidades de São Paulo e Rio de Janeiro, e na documentação diplomática, tendo em vista a difusão do antiniponismo na sociedade brasileira entre os anos 1897 e 1945. Buscarei comprovar, a partir da análise das charges e caricaturas publicadas nessas revistas, sejam de cunho literário ou irreverente (cômico), que a iconografia exerceu papel fundamental na construção da imagem estereotipada do imigrante japonês. As imagens traduziam e difundiam o ideário oficial, especialmente da diplomacia brasileira, especialmente em uma sociedade em que a maioria da população era pouco alfabetizada. Tal situação legitimou a práxis racista e o preconceito contra esses estrangeiros, especialmente durante o regime estadonovista e na Segunda Guerra Mundial. A minha contribuição, nessa pesquisa, será comprovar que tal imagem de perigosos racialmente e politicamente já estava presente desde o início do processo imigratório japonês para o Brasil.
This study has as aim to analyze the discussion around Japanese immigration through magazines published in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro and diplomatic documents between 1897 and 1945. In view of a reality of anti-Japanese thought diffusion in an ongoing literacy society, corroborated by different sources, I intend to confirm that iconography was central on constructing stereotyped imagery of Japanese immigrant. The image is considered central issue for our study to understand on that symbols and images play an educative role for viewing and agreeing with convenient concepts, specially from Brazilian diplomacy. This situation has legitimized racist praxis and outsiders prejudice, specially during Estado Novo and World War II. My contribution in this research will prove that this image of racially and politically dangerous had been present since the start of the Japanese immigration to Brazil.

This work has as its object of analysis the manga japanese comics comic book titled Kozure Ookami, in its literal translation, The Wolf with his Cub, by Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima, created and published in Japan from 1970 to 1976. The goal of this study was the search for an understanding of the process of penetration and acting that manga does in society and how they are problematizadas different dimensions and social practices, as well as the subject, their collisions and clashes that permeate the narratives and social roles that these represent these. The choice of this manga as source search gave for its uniqueness and richness as a narrative, offering a infinity of possibilities for historical study. Extends the basic comics, this research was to identify and highlight social practices, collisions, aspirations, values and sensitivities that are present in the worldview of Koike and Kojima, while historical subjects who experience their experiences, inserted within the social fabricin a dialogicidade relationship with his own time and everyday life. Contrasting with the font used, the analysis was conducted using various documents, and can thus capture stays, ruptures and resistance that were present in Japanese society of post-World War II, characterized by large-scale process of capitalist development
Este trabalho tem como objeto de análise o mangá revista em quadrinhos japonesa intitulado Kozure Ookami, em sua tradução literal, O Lobo Acompanhado de seu Filhote, de autoria de Kazuo Koike e Goseki Kojima, criado e publicado no Japão, de 1970 a 1976. O objetivo deste estudo foi a busca por um entendimento sobre o processo de penetração e atuação que o mangá realiza na sociedade e como são problematizadas as diferentes dimensões e práticas sociais presentes, assim como os sujeitos, seus embates e os enfrentamentos que permeiam as narrativas e os papéis sociais que estes representam nestas. A escolha deste mangá como fonte de pesquisa se deu por sua singularidade e riqueza como veículo narrativo, oferecendo uma infinidade de possibilidades para o estudo histórico. Partindo dos quadrinhos base desta pesquisa, foi possível identificar e evidenciar práticas sociais diversas, embates, anseios, valores e sensibilidades que estão presentes na visão de mundo de Koike e Kojima, enquanto sujeitos históricos que vivenciam suas experiências, inseridos dentro do tecido social, numa relação de dialogicidade com sua própria época e cotidiano. Contrapondo com a fonte utilizada, a análise foi realizada utilizando documentos diversos, sendo possível assim, captar permanências, rupturas e resistências que estavam presentes na sociedade japonesa do pós-Segunda Guerra Mundial, caracterizada pelo processo em larga escala de desenvolvimento capitalista

In 1984, a previously unreported species of hydroid, Samuraia tabularasa Mangin, 1991, appeared in the rocky intertidal zone of the northern Gulf of California, Mexico. Samuraia tabularasa, whose common name is the samurai hydroid, is a new genus and species in the athecate family Hydrocorynidae, class Hydrozoa, phylum Cnidaria. A key character that refers this species to a new genus is its mode of sexual reproduction by eumedusoids. Additionally, Samuraia tabularasa is able to withstand extreme desiccation in the intertidal zone, an evolutionary novelty for hydrozoans. Since its appearance, the samurai hydroid has had a dramatic effect on the community by causing the death of barnacles (Chthamalus anisopoma), the dominant occupier of space in this system, and thereby increasing the amount of primary substrate available for use by other species. Each hydroid colony is surrounded by an elliptical clearing approximately 2.5 cm in diameter that is kept clear of adult barnacles by causing the death of all newly settled barnacles that settle within reach of its tentacles. The clearings are maintained free of barnacles for sufficient time to allow for the growth of crustose algae (Ralfsia sp., and others) and subsequent grazing by limpets (Collisella strongiana) that live in the clearings. The addition of the samurai hydroid thus has led to an increase in local abundance of these two native species. This study shows that communities can be very resilient to the changes caused by the addition of a new species. Not only was there "room" for the samurai hydroid, but its activity promoted local species diversity by increasing habitat complexity. Hydroid mortality has exceeded recruitment from 1985-1990. This population decline, along with a 60% decrease in the average area of a hydroid clearing, may be associated with the hydroid's status as a recent invader and suggests that it is no longer favored in this region.

Este estudo trata da representação do herói nas histórias em quadrinhos do Japão, os mangás, e dos Estados Unidos, os comics. Esta análise se propõe a comparar a figura do samurai, focada nos títulos Samurai X e Vagabond, e do super-herói, através de Superman e Batman. Para tal, utilizam-se duas minisséries norte-americanas de cada um dos títulos escolhidos publicadas entre o final da década de 1980 e a década de 1990, mesmo período dos quadrinhos japoneses. Os títulos escolhidos ilustram questões-chaves para o entendimento da figura do herói: seu surgimento, morte e confronto com antagonistas. Considerando o vasto material relacionado aos personagens norte-americanos, criados no final da década de 1930, optou-se por trabalhar com sagas específicas ao invés da obra como um todo, o que só foi possível no caso dos mangás. Por isso, essa análise se baseará nas histórias em quadrinhos publicadas a partir do final da década de 1980, preservando assim a paridade cronológica entre comics e mangás, os quais possuem uma cronologia mais rígida se comparada aos primeiros. Quanto aos segmentos escolhidos, no lado do Superman, farão parte dessa análise os arcos Man of Steel, de 1986, com a origem do personagem e A Morte e o Retorno do Superman, de 1992. Já em Batman serão analisadas as HQs Batman: Ano Um, de 1987 e Knightfall, de 1993.
This study talks about the representation of the hero in Japanese comics, the manga, and North-American comics. This analysis intends to compare the samurai figure, focused on the titles Samurai X (Rurouni Kenshin) and Vagabond, and the superhero figure, through Superman and Batman. Therefore, two miniseries were chosen from each American character, published between the final part of 1980s and the 1990s, same period of time that the Japanese ones. The chosen titles illustrate key-questions to the understanding of the hero figure: its origins, death and confrontation with antagonists. Considering the vast material related to the American characters, created at the end of the 1930 decade, this research chose to deal with specific sagas instead of the whole work, which was only possible in the mangas. Therefore, this analysis will be based on comic books published from the late 1980s, thus preserving the parity in time between comics and mangá, whose chronology is much stricter. The segments of chosen were, from Superman, Man of Steel, of 1986, telling the origins of the character and The Death and Return of Superman, of 1992. From Batman will be analyzed Batman: Year One, of 1987, and Knightfall, of 1993.

Denna uppsats handlar om hur jag arbetat med att ta fram två spelbara karaktärer, en så historiskt korrekt samuraj som möjligt och en 2-årig pojke, som skulle kunna vara hans son. Båda ska uppfylla kraven för nästa generations dataspel. Jag har skrivit om arbetsprocessen, och om de svårigheter jag stött på. De flesta problemen har jag lyckats lösa, men några har jag valt att kringgå. Det finns också en reflekterande text, som tar upp det allmänna intresset just nu för japansk kultur och historia, och där jag bl a försöker förklara varför jag valt att skapa dessa två karaktärer. Den frågeställning som jag anser mig ha fått svar på är vad det innebär att skapa två relativt olika karaktärer med hjälp av programmen Maya och ZBrush. Framför allt har jag blivit väl bekant med ZBrush, där jag utnyttjat möjligheten att göra textureringen i 3D (polypainting), i stället för att på traditionellt sätt arbeta i 2D med Photoshop. Jag är nöjd med slutresultatet och hoppas att det kan inspirera andra, samtidigt som det finns en del att lära av de svårigheter jag stött på på vägen.

Det övergripande syftet med uppsatsens är att belysa Akira Kurosawas unika färdigheter och utmärkande drag som filmskapare, vilket adresseras i tre frågeställningar: Vilka återkommande narrativa teman finns representerade i Kurosawas filmproduktion, och hur presenteras dessa i tre utvalda filmer? Hur använder sig regissören stilistiskt och filmtekniskt av rörelse i de tre filmerna? Hur tar sig väder och andra naturfenomen uttryck i de tre filmerna och vilken funktion har de där? Filmerna som analyseras är Drunken Angel (Yoidore tenshi/Den berusade ängeln, 1948), Stray Dog (Nora inu/ Revolvern, 1949) och The Hidden Fortress (Kakushi toride no san akunin/ Den vilda flykten, 1958). Analysen utgår från det neoformalistiska tillvägagångsätt som David Bordwell och Kristin Thompson beskriver. Genom främmandegörning identifieras och granskas återkommande teman, rörelse och väder och andra naturfenomen i filmerna, studerade i sina socio-historiska sammanhang. Rättfärdigandet av inslagen, dvs deras motivering, adresseras tillsammans med den funktion de intar i scenerna. I Kurosawas filmproduktion identifieras 17 återkommande teman, där två kluster av teman, regissörens förhållande till japansk tradition och hans humanistiska livssyn, är särskilt framträdande. Väder- och naturfenomen som regn, vind, hetta, eld och dimma förekommer ofta och intar speciella funktioner i filmerna, både estetiskt och narrativt. De interagerar även med karaktärerna. Rörelser i bildrutan åstadkoms filmtekniskt på olika sätt. De är viktiga visuella komponenter som skapar spänning och kontinuitet, men har även ett rent artistiskt värde. Genom variationer och kombinationer av återkommande teman, väderinslag och rörelse visar Kurosawas på en stilistisk särart som karakteriserar hans filmskapande.

This thesis examines two examples of martial dance theatre: Mika HAKA performed by Torotoro (New Zealand), and The Sound of Silence performed by Samudra (India). Both productions were created for international touring, and this thesis looks at their performance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (UK). The companies’ choreography integrates native and foreign dance with their hereditary martial arts. These disciplines involve practitioners in displays of prowess that are also entertaining spectacles. They have an expressive dimension that makes them contiguous with dance – a potential that Torotoro and Samudra exploit. The companies address their audiences with combative and inviting movements: Torotoro juxtapose wero and haka (Māori martial rites) with breakdance; Samudra combine kaḷarippayaṭṭu (Kerala’s martial art) with bharatanāṭyam (South Indian classical dance). Their productions interweave local movement practices with performance arts in global circulation, and are often presented before predominantly white, Western audiences. What is created are performances that are generically unstable – the product of cultural interactions in which contradictory agendas converge. In its largest scope, martial dance theatre might include military parades and tattoos, ritual enactments of combat, and folk and classical dance theatre. These performances propagate images of idealised men that create statements of national and cultural identity. They, and the martial disciplines they theatricalise, are also implicated in the performative construction of gender, ethnicity and race. Torotoro and Samudra’s performances, influenced by queer and feminist agendas, offer insights into martial dance theatre’s masculinist potential, and its contribution to the intercultural negotiation of identities. Prominent European theatre practitioners have sought to employ the martial arts to develop Western performers. If these culturally specific disciplines are expressive and performative disciplines, then what are the implications and complications of this transcultural project?

This research focuses on main challenges and opportunities in developing sustainable tourism in Samui Island, one of the well-known tourist destinations in Thailand. The island is rich in environmental and cultural resources as well as being a popular coastal tourism resort generating considerable revenues (approx. GBP 700 million in 2014). However, serious environmental impacts due to mass tourism threaten not only the island‘s tourism industry in, but also the ecology of the region and the long-term well-being of its residents. Thus, this research aims to analyse the interrelationships between tourism stakeholders and how their relational networks influence (un)sustainable practices and shape tourism clusters and sustainable tourism development. This work draws upon empirical data collected in two study regions - in Samui – sub-district Bo Phud situated in the north-east, and two sub-districts of Na Muang and Taling Ngam in the south-west. The research used and applied key concepts inherent in stakeholder theory, social networks approach, and the notion of clusters, to examine the micro-dynamics underpinning (un)sustainable tourism practices in Samui Island. A qualitative approach was utilised for the research investigation through 60 semi-structured interviews and 4 focus groups. The interview participants were policy makers, such as government bodies, and public- tourism organisations, tourism businesses, tourism associations, non-profit organisation, and local communities. Key findings show the significance of existing collaborative networks between public-private sectors and non-profit organisation which demonstrate both (in) formal networks as well as strong and weak relationships. Social networks enable innovative tourism products and activities, as well as green projects. However, these collaborative networks were still limited in some particular groups such as upmarket hotels and resorts. Other groups of stakeholders were in peripheral positions in tourism networks, especially local communities which lacked connections and participations in the tourism development process. Key challenges in relation to networking included lack of trust towards government bodies, tension between outsiders (both Thai and foreigners ) and insiders (Samui local people), and lack of time and commitment. Also key challenges towards sustainable tourism implementation arise due to the lack of financial resources, and social networks that are in some cases mobilised for unsustainable practices such as corruptions, and by the networks of businesses that are not licensed or are unregulated, as well as 'dark networks' such as sex workers, pimps and clusters of drugs dealers.

Apart from the obvious and visible effects on the economy and the physical environment, tourism can contribute to social and cultural changes in host societies. Many host communities put their hopes on tourism as an economic driver and development tool. However, it is still unclear whether tourism is more useful or harmful towards host destinations. It is obvious that international tourism would be a short pathway to make the transition from a traditional way of life to a modem form of society. Many studies show that destinations consider these changes positively in terms of modernisation and affluence. However, the interaction between two different cultures creates change processes over time, especially in an Eastern context where the modernisation process is Western in orientation. Prior studies on residents' attitudes and perceptions toward socio-cultural impacts of tourism identify various relationships. However, much less analysis has focused on the influence of cultural factors. Additionally, most previous studies focus on residents' attitudes and perceptions towards tourism development through quantitative surveys with cluster or factor analysis based on a limited range of predetermined attributes. Few studies explore the changes from an indigenous culture perspective. The aim of this research is to develop a better understanding of the residents of a Thai beach resort's attitudes towards tourism, in particular their perceptions of the socio-cultural impacts of tourism development and the associated behavioural changes in their society. Koh Samui was chosen for this investigation as it is a self-contained model of a beach resort development where there are sociocultural impacts. A constructivist paradigm approach was adopted. Consideration is given in the literature review and the methodology chapters to issues related to conducting research in the Thai context. Choosing qualitative research serves as a bridge, which can link theory, practice and deeper findings. This research employed participant observation and semi-structured interviews. The background of the local residents and local context in Koh Samui were explored as well as local residents' behaviour patterns and the interaction between them and tourists on a day to day basis. Following a period of immersion in the community, residents' and local authorities' perceptions and attitudes toward the socio-cultural impacts of tourism development in Koh Samui were investigated through semi-structured interviews. Isan migrant workers emerged from the data analysis as a key issue due to the fact that local people believed these migrant workers were responsible for the majority of socio-cultural impacts in Koh Samui including demographic changes, rise in crime, drug abuse, prostitution and AIDS infection, demonstration effects, and increased poverty and slums. Consequently, local people were offended by and fearful of Isan migrant workers. In addition, the analysis suggests that Isan migrant workers had adapted to more readily to tourist culture. Acculturation and social identity theory are explored to explain this situation. Social identity suggests that Isan migrant workers were out-group of Koh Samui as well as sense of belongingness as a self-esteem was a key answer to this adaptation in Isan migrant workers. Buddha's teaching and the Thai avoidance of confrontation are the main players in order to reflect on how Thai people cope with socio-cultural changes. The majority of local residents in Koh Samui are Buddhist and this has taught them to accept problems and learn how to live with them. A fundamental factor is an Eastern world view. In Koh Samui, it was necessary for local people to accept tourism and cope with socio-cultural changes in their community so as not to reject the apparent benefits of tourism. The findings illustrate many contexts in which local people are led by their cultural background to accept tourism. Following a crisis in local agriculture which was dependent on coconuts, tourism seemed to be the only way for local people to survive. It is, therefore, difficult for them to blame tourism as a cause of the main socio-cultural problems in their community. Therefore, they try to apportion blame elsewhere, in this case on the Isan migrants. Buddhism is followed by ninety-five percent of Thai people. It is undoubted that Buddhism has a strong influence on everyday life of Thai people, their society and culture. The implications of Thai cultural conditions and responses in the everyday life that were emerged from the analysis are discussed including Thai loose social structure, cool heart behaviour, the concept of Choei, face-saving and avoidance of confrontation, Boonkhun relationships, Kreng-jai value, Num-jai value, and brotherhood or helpful relationships. The importance of exploring an indigenous cultural perspective is discussed together with lessons that can be learned for tourism development and its socio-cultural impacts.

The samurai has been viewed as the Oriental equivalent of the feudalistic knights of Europe ever since the Europeans of old first landed on the shores of Japan in the 16th century. This comparison was not only because of their positions as the military class of their respective societies, but also because of the similarities in ethics and morality causing them to personify the concept of chivalry. The code of moral principles, based on the influences of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Shintoism, which the samurai was either instructed or required to observe, is called Bushidō or the Way of the Samurai. By the application of the theory of conceptual history, the study analysed the three works The Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi, Hagakure – The Way of the Samurai by Yamamoto Tsunetomo, and Bushido – The Soul of Japan by Inazo Nitobe. The purpose of the essay was to analyse and discuss how bushidō has been defined and explained by the three sources written in different time periods and how these three authors differ in their definitions of bushidō. Furthermore, the definitions were contextualized based on the societal changes of Japan between the time of writing the sources. The results showed how the authors focus on different aspects of what is included in bushidō and how the samurai was supposed to act for the benefit of society. Musashi added more focus on the way the samurai was supposed to excel on the battlefield. Tsunetomo, however, wrote his work while peace in Japan had established itself and thus focused on how the samurai was supposed to behave outside of the battlefield. Nitobe’s definition of bushidō also showed implications of a change in society based on how he chose to explain the concept of what bushidō was, and how it had evolved without the knights who had fostered it. Lastly, the study was discussed within an educational context. The samurai have seen a rise in popular history through games, film, advertisements, and more, and thus the curiosity of students, not only in Oriental culture, but Japanese culture in particular has been acknowledged. Therefore, teachers need further development of their own knowledge within the field of Oriental culture, which this study hopefully succeeds in.
