Abstract:
This study investigates different samurais' choices and their fates in the anime series "Rurouni Kenshin." In this study, by analyzing different samurai figures in the anime as they go through the changes from the Edo to the Meiji era, the samurai show different ways of reflecting on their own perceptions and traditional bushido: Himura Kenshin reflects on the situation brought to the people by the times and his own samurai identity, and finally chooses to pursue benevolence and not to kill anymore; Saito Hajime keeps the traditional spirit of bushido but blends it with the new era; Shishio Makoto rejects most of the traditional concepts of bushido and is willing to change from being a samurai to being an emperor through his ability and ambition. Most of the previous studies of Bushido focused on the characteristics, the history and trajectory of the formation of Bushido spirit. When studying Bushido in animation, previous studies tended to look for the embodiment of Bushido culture in animation, but fewer focused on the changes of Bushido culture in animation. This study provides a new perspective on examining the impact of changing time using Japanese anime.

Abstract:
This research aimed to determine the influence of various doses of urea fertilizer on the chemical characteristics of mutant sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) grain varieties Samurai1, Samurai-2, and Pahat. A Fully Randomized Factorial Design was used by employing two factors and three replications. The three varieties of mutant sorghum grain served as the first factor while four doses (i.e., 0, 30, 60, and 90 kg/ha) of urea fertilizer administration served as the second factor. The parameters in the chemical test on the sorghum grain include ash, total protein, amylum, reducing sugar, dissolved protein, and tannin contents. The administration of urea fertilizer significantly influenced the increase in the ash, amylum, reducing sugar, and dissolved protein contents of Samurai-1 but did not significantly do so to such contents of Samurai-2 and Pahat. The urea fertilizer dose of 90 kg/ha gave the best results of the chemical composition of the three types of mutant sorghum grain. Chemically, mutant sorghum flour of the three varieties is qualified as a quality food ingredient with Samurai-1 being the best of the three varieties, in that case, possessing total protein content of 7.90%, amylum (or starch) content of 14.51%, dissolved protein content of 2.38%, reducing sugar content of 2.88%, and tannin content of 0.70%.

Abstract:
Previous studies have reported that compared to commoners in Japan’s Edo period, samurai had long heads, more dental irregularities, and slightly worn teeth. However, these studies did not measure the mandible or only measured length. Angular analysis is essential to evaluate the maxillofacial morphology, but there are no comparative studies of samurai and commoners. This study explored the differences in maxillofacial morphology between samurai and commoners in the Edo period. Thirty male skeletons (samurai) and thirty-eight male skeletons (commoners) were used as materials from the National Museum of Nature and Science. The selected specimens were adults aged between 20 and 59 years without serious skeletal damage and with stable occlusion of the molars. We used three-dimensional scanning to measure the specimens’ skeletal, alveolar, and facial widths. The mandibular plane angle and the gonial angle were significantly larger in the samurai than in the commoners. The ratio of the intermandibular first molars, interzygomatic arch, and mandibular width was significantly shorter in the samurai than in the commoners. The samurai had a high angle tendency and smaller mandibular width than the commoners, reflecting the class system.

Abstract:
Though difficult to define as a clear set of moral precepts, aspects of so-called “samurai values”, the combination of orally-transmitted Confucian and Buddhist lore to which Nitobe Inazō refers in his Bushido, can clearly be discerned in Japanese society today. As evidence for the influence of “samurai values”, I have provided examples from two fields with which I am personally familiar: journalism and education. Although in recent years several academic works have exposed historical anomalies in widely-held beliefs about actual samurai behaviour, I argue that the effectiveness of ideologies does not depend on historical accuracy. For example, justification for the right of newspapers to criticise governments in Japan does not stem from inalienable rights originating with European Enlightenment philosophers. Instead, it is linked to the view that the former samurai who in the 1870s became Japan’s first news reporters could be trusted intermediaries between the government and the people, because as samurai they possessed higher standards of morality. That expectations of superior moral conduct continue to justify in the eyes of the general public the right of newspapers to speak truth to power can be seen by mass cancellations of subscriptions of newspapers whose staff betray these expectations through involvement in scandal. Likewise, the emphasis on “character building” (jinkaku keisei) in Japanese higher education is another link to perceived “samurai values.” Some of Japan’s leading private universities were founded in the late nineteenth century by former samurai. As in the case of journalism, the maintenance of superior moral conduct helps strengthen the claim to legitimacy of educational institutions in Japan. Finally, I will present a picture of Nitobe as an example of a former samurai who long after his passing continues to be revered for having adhered to the “samurai values” he both defined and embraced.

Abstract:
Summary Bateren and Samurai. The Exchange of Knowledge by the Jesuit Mission in Japan This article focuses on the production and exchange of knowledge stimulated by the missionary work of the Jesuit Order in Japan’s „Christian century“ (Charles R. Boxer). The paper shows how the printing and dissemination of Jesuit travel reports and letters created a new image of East Asia, which slowly replaced the older one based mainly on Marco Polo’s book. „Zipangu“ was replaced by „Japan“. The journey of four young Japanese nobles through Portugal, Spain and Italy, misunderstood by European observers as a spectacular diplomatic visit, aroused an overwhelming public interest in their physical appearance, habits and cultural background and made dialogues possible that led to a more detailed knowledge of the Japanese islands. On the other side of the globe, the Japanese were fascinated by the material goods, daily practices and customs of the „Southern barbarians“ (namban-jin), which is what they called the (South) European merchants and missionaries. This namban boom did not last for a long time, but it had significant effects for the geographical knowledge and cartographical practice of the time. In particular, the so-called namban world map screens, highly decorative pieces of art, brought different cultural traditions together and reflected the transcultural interactions that the Jesuit missionaries had initiated.

Instrumenting weapons and armor showed that Viking chain mail could withstand the slashing attack of a Samurai katana in the TV series named Deadliest Warrior. The show pits fighters with different styles of fighting who never met—Spartan vs. Ninja or Apache vs. Gladiator —against one another. The show’s experts include a doctor, a computer programmer, and Desmoulin, the go-to guy for figuring out the impact of ancient arms. They feed their findings into a Monte Carlo simulation that runs hundreds of simulations and picks the most likely winner.

Abstract:
Abstract: In 1924, Oyabe Zen’ichirō (1867–1941), an amateur historian, published a small book, Chinggis Khan was Minamoto no Yoshitsune (Jingisu Kan wa Minamoto no Yoshitsune nari), which revived the old tale of the medieval samurai Yoshitsune’s escape to the territory of present Mongolia, where after unifying the Mongolian tribes he took the name of Chinggis Khan. Oyabe’s book reveals how in the interwar period the imagined medieval past and historical personalities were mobilized in the Japanese imperial expansion into the Mongolian lands. This article demonstrates how in the post–World War I years Japanese imperial boosters formulated a new rhetoric of the shared historical, cultural, political, and racial heritage with the Mongols, which ultimately justified the Japanese military plans to bring the Mongolian lands and its people, formally divided between the Qing and Romanov empires, under imperial Japan’s control.

SGF Samurai 1 mengandung protein kasar tertinggi yaitu 19,26%. Kandungan neutral detergent fiber (NDF) SGF ketiga varietas tidak berbeda nyata. SGF varietas Pahat menghasilkan estimasi RFV tertinggi (P<0,05). Kata kunci: Hidroponik, kecernaan In vitro, profil nutrisi, relative feed value, sorghum green fodder ABSTRACT Hydroponics technique is one of the alternative methods for forage cultivation. Sorghum has been developed in Indonesia as an alternative forage. Indonesia National Nuclear Energy Agency (BATAN) has produced three varieties of sorghum (Pahat, Samurai 1, and Samurai 2). These three varieties can develop as Sorghum Green Fodder (SGF). The purpose of this study was to investigate the growth, nutrient, and digestibility profile of SGF from three different sorghum varieties. The treatment of the studies was: 1) P (Pahat) as control; 2) S1 (Samurai 1); 3) S2 (Samurai 2). Treatment on In vitro digestibility study: 1) RL (native grass); 2) P; 3) S1 and 4) S2. Complete randomized design with five replications was used in this study. The results showed that Samurai 2 produced the highest height and fresh weight (21.35 cm and 1.20 kg) (P <0.05). Neutral detergent fiber (NDF) of three varieties SGF was not significantly different. The highest relative feed value (RFV) was produced by SGF from Pahat variety. Dry matter (DM) and organic matter (OM) digestibility of SGF is higher than field grass (P<0,05). The conclusion of this research is SGF Samurai 2 produces the highest biomass production compared to Pahat and Samurai 1 varieties. In vitro digestibility of SGF from Pahat variety is better than other varieties and native grass. Keywords: hydroponics, in vitro digestibility, nutrient profile, relative feed value, sorghum green fodder

Abstract:
According to the view current among most Japanese today, the samurai lost their last hope of surviving as a distinct social or political group when Saigō Takamori died in the autumn of 1877. In fact, the fate of the samurai class had been sealed as early as 1866, when Satsuma and Chōshū joined forces to destroy the only institutional order in which the samurai had any functional meaning. Their disappearance from the Japanese stage was brought about by forces that Saigō helped to set in motion, but over which neither he nor any other individual could possibly have exerted much control. In the end he had no significant effect on the fate of the samurai.

Abstract:
The fearsome Japanese samurai, a legendary figure whose primary attribute was loyalty or honor, needs no introduction. He is strongly associated with the equally famous katana. The popular image of the samurai probably would appear wearing armor but certainly does not carry a shield. This figure, many assume, must have dominated medieval Japan. Yet is this samurai image accurate? Can it withstand sustained scrutiny? What was Japanese warfare really like 1000 years ago? In this article, I evaluate the key sources on medieval warfare in Japan, identifying the contributions of each and pointing out some methodological problems they face. The most prominent casualty of this synthetic analysis is the pop culture image of the heroic and honorable sword-wielding samurai.

Abstract:
This scientific article provides data on the effectiveness of successive application of herbicides against annual and perennial weeds in cotton fields on arable lands plowed with simple and two-sided plows. When the herbicide Samurai (1.5 l/ha) is applied separately, the annual weeds are effectively lost (86.8-90.2%), and have a weak effect on perennials. When Zellek Super (1.0 l/ha) herbicide is used separately, it has a weak effect on annuals (24.0-32.0%), effectively reducing weeds. Both perennial weeds (90.5-93.0%) and perennial weeds are effective when applied in series with Samurai (1.5 l/ha) and Zellek Super (1.0 l/ha) herbicides 88.9 -93.3% loss. Cotton yield will increase by 1.8-5.4 q/ha compared to the control option. Consecutive application of Samurai (1.5 l/ha) and Samurai (1.5 l/ha) and Zellek Super (1.0 l/ha) herbicides against annual and perennial weeds is recommended.

Abstract:
Historically, tokugawa Samurai were a legal creation that grew out of the landed warriors of the medieval age; they came to be defined by the Tokugawa shogunate in terms of hereditary status, a right to hold public office, a right to bear arms, and a “cultural superiority” upheld through educational preferment (Smith 1988, 134). With the prominent exception of Eiko Ikegami's recentThe Taming of the Samurai(1995), little has been written in English in the past two decades regarding the sociopolitical history of the samurai in Tokugawa and Meiji Japan. E. H. Norman's seminal work,Japan's Emergence as a Modern State, established the parameters of debate among American historians of Japan from the 1950s through the 1970s. Drawing on the Marxist historiography of prewar Japan, Norman interpreted the Meiji Restoration in terms of class conflict: a modified bourgeois revolution directed against a feudal Tokugawa regime, led by a coalition of lower samurai and merchants, and supported by a peasant militia (Norman [1940] 1975).

Abstract:
The word “samurai” firmly rooted in the modern Russian language, along with Fujiyama, geisha and sakura. Though obviously this was not always the case. This article traces the initial process of perceiving the concept of samurai in pre-revolutionary Russia and the Soviet Union: from the 1890s, from the first military victories of rapidly modernizing Japan, to the RussoJapanese War and further to the beginning of the Second World War. Initially endowed with features of “childishness” or “femininity,” gentleness and grace, the image of Japan is gradually becoming “masculine” and is increasingly associated with the concept of “samurai.” At first, this concept is related to such qualities as belligerence and cruelty but also loyalty to lord and “knightly” honor. Often, following Nitobe Inazo, the best qualities of the Japanese are generally traced back to the samurai tradition. Later, the Japanese appear in an increasingly caricature form, as greedy but powerless aggressors. At first, this image is not associated with the concept of “samurai” but by the 1930s fused with it. At the same time, Soviet authors criticize the “feminine” perception of Japan – they describe both the ruling exploiter and the exploited worker with “masculine” traits. The article examines the early Japanese borrowings in Russian dictionaries of foreign words, the images of the Japanese in the writings of Russian and Soviet writers, the characteristics of the country and its inhabitants in popular editions devoted to Japan as well as in propaganda texts and pictures.

Abstract:
This research focuses on ethnocentrism in Edward Zwick’s The Last Samurai. It is intended to identify how ethnocentrism is depicted and reflected in the life of samurai in the movie The Last Samurai. The ethnocentrism theory by William G. Sumner will be used to analyze the movie. The data were obtained by watching the film, reading the movie script and cinematographic elements, identifying data based on the topic of study, and categorizing the data with respect to the theoretical framework. Based on the analysis, the findings show that there are three aspects of ethnocentrism; first, loyal to in-group norms; second, express in-group pride; third, judge and underestimate the out-group. These three features of ethnocentrism create a deep perception in their dominant culture to others.

Abstract:
Bushido as a moral teaching contains the principles of virtue to form the soul of a knight. A typical Japanese knight is a Samurai. The moral teaching is inherited verbally from generation to generation until now. Japanese people practice these teachings seriously into everyday life. They live every principle with full sincerity, honesty, and wholeheartedly to form a patriotic soul. The principles of teaching are formulated in writing into seven principles that are inseparable from one another. Because every principle underlies and animates other principles. A Samurai cannot abandon one principle of teaching because if he abandons one principle the quality of a samurai will disappear so that he does not have a patriotic soul. Therefore, Bushido is able to form a patriot who is always superior.

Abstract:
In this article, I deal with the anthropological and ontological aspects of Edward Zwick’s The Last Samurai. As far as the film’s anthropological aspect is concerned, I deal with the clash between the West and the East as present therein and, by showing that the film ascribes (ethi- cal) superiority to the dying Japanese feudal culture (i.e., the East), I conclude that it opposes the Western Civilization’s prevalent anthropological stance in the 19th century. As for the film’s ontological aspect, I deal with the question of god’s presence (or absence) in the events shown in it, and conclude that the film can be interpreted from both an atheist and a theist perspective. Apropos of the film’s pro-samurai anthropological aspect, I stress the primitivist utopianism of The Last Samurai.
