Abstract:

Casa Fullana [Fullana House], built in 1955 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, is an exemplary model of Henry Klumb’s (1905-1984) design principles for modern living in the tropics. German architect Henry Klumb conducted a prolific architectural practice in Puerto Rico, producing some of the most iconic examples of tropical modernism in the Caribbean. His work, most notably at the University of Puerto Rico (1946-1966) (UPR) and in landmark projects like the San Martin de Porres Church (1948) in Cataño, constituted a breakthrough in Puerto Rican, Caribbean and Latin American architecture. Anchored in the principles of modern architecture, specifically of an organic architecture put forward by his mentor Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), Klumb’s work is deeply rooted in the specificities of the landscape, topography, and climate of Puerto Rico as a tropical island.

El objeto de este artículo es contribuir a la aportación de una información detallada acerca de la batería de San Francisco de Paula, fortificación construida en el lado sureste de la ciudad de San Juan de Puerto Rico, para evitar posibles desembarcos enemigos en este sector. Son muy pocos los autores que mencionan esta obra y se desconoce el momento exacto de su construcción, aunque varias fuentes gráficas y documentales localizadas en el Archivo General Militar de Madrid, el Archivo Histórico Nacional y el Archivo General de Puerto Rico, analizadas para este estudio, permiten constatar que fue levantada a finales del siglo XVIII por el ingeniero militar, de origen español, Juan Francisco Mestre.

La prevalencia del abuso de sustancias constituye un problema creciente entre las mujeres de bajos ingresos en Puerto Rico. El acceso a tratamiento puede jugar un rol importante en la remisión, sin embargo muy poco se sabe sobre su utilización. Además, se desconoce el papel mediador del capital social en la utilización de tratamientos para abuso de sustancias. Este estudio examina el papel relativo del capital social y otros factores en la obtención de tratamiento para abuso de sustancias entre mujeres de 18 a 35 años que viven en áreas urbanas de alto riesgo en San Juan, Puerto Rico. ABSTRACT The prevalence of substance abuse constitutes an increasing problem among low-income urban women in Puerto Rico. Access to treatment may play an important role in remission, however, little is known about women’s utilization. Further, the mediating role of social capital in substance abuse treatment utilization is unknown. This study examines the relative role of social capital and other factors in obtaining substance abuse treatment of women ages 18-35 living in high-risk urban areas of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

ABSTRACT The January 1994 grounding and discharge of over 800,000 gallons (3,028,000 liters/3,028 m3) of low API gravity No. 6 oil from the tank barge Morris J. Berman at San Juan, Puerto Rico was one of those infrequent but typically major events that set in motion a massive skimming and shoreline cleanup operation. As these actions proceeded effectively along the northern coast of Puerto Rico, it quickly became apparent that significant quantities of oil from the Berman had submerged and continued to recontaminate economic, historic, and environmentally sensitive coastal areas after the leaking barge and floating oil had been removed. Recognizing the unique nature of the problem and general lack of Coast Guard or industry-wide experience in the emerging field of submerged oil recovery, the federal on-scene coordinator (FOSC) formed a group within the overall organization to respond to the situation. The methods implemented by this group recovered approximately 145,000 gallons of oil from the seabed at an estimated cost of $8 million.

Este trabajo forma parte de un conjunto de investigaciones con las que pretendemos contribuir al estudio de la circulación de ideas sobre la ciencia de policía en el Caribe, en el contexto del impacto que el proceso de globalización incipiente tuvo sobre la región. En este caso planteamos el análisis de los efectos y las respuestas dadas a los problemas generados en el centro urbano de San Juan de Puerto Rico por lluvias torrenciales entre los años 1750 y 1850, coincidiendo con la materialización en la ciudad de algunas infraestructuras significativas y la implementación de medidas relacionadas con la mejora de las condiciones de salubridad. Para ello, hemos consultado las actas capitulares de la ciudad de San Juan de Puerto Rico y analizado algunas de las disposiciones contempladas sobre este asunto en los bandos de buen gobierno del período.

La investigación de Arqueología de la Arquitectura en la Iglesia San José, San Juan de Puerto Rico, se enmarcó en el proyecto de restauración que lleva a cabo actualmente el Patronato de Monumentos de San Juan Inc. Dicha investigación se enfocó en analizar el desarrollo de las diferentes técnicas y materiales constructivos asociados al s. XVI: ábside, crucero y transepto. Entre sus objetivos estuvieron: aportar información sobre las técnicas y materiales constructivos utilizados; aportar criterios científicos que permitieran identificar la extensión y límites de cada una de sus fases y etapas constructivas. Los resultados permitieron la identificación de diversas técnicas constructivas utilizadas, así como una delimitación precisa de su configuración a lo largo de sus casi 500 años. Estos resultados presentan una perspectiva mucho más dinámica sobre los procesos constructivos del inmueble y confirman la necesidad de estudios arqueológicos en obras de restauración de edificios patrimoniales.

Abstract The Ecclesiological Investigations International Research Network gathered in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in June 2022 to discuss the issue of “decolonizing churches” from ecumenical, intercultural, and interdisciplinary perspectives. And, although the place was chosen for a number of reasons, one of the main ones was that the Caribbean context and especially the island of Puerto Rico contributed to further problematize the colonize-decolonize binomial within ecclesial and theological coordinates. Las Fiestas de la Calle de San Sebastián is a four day-long festival in San Juan, Puerto Rico. While the festival comprises music and dance that is a combination of various Caribbean and Latin American aesthetics, there is a small group of local musicians who insist on staying away from the larger throngs to specifically play a Puerto Rican music medium known as plena. By defining a distinct physical space that is separate from the rest of the festival, but also a part of the festival, they sing throughout the night speaking to contemporary issues of American imperialism, class warfare, and corrupt politicians. During the festival the complex power dynamics of Puerto Rico as a United States territory, lacking both independence as a sovereign nation and the same rights as a state, are manifested in festival performance. This performance tries to negotiate how the island remains autonomous while being attached to a more powerful mainland economy.

Abstract:

An overview of the Tren Urbano project in San Juan, Puerto Rico, is presented. Phase 1 will be a 17-km rail rapid transit line from Bayamon to Sagrado Corazon in metropolitan San Juan. The line is standard gauge, third-rail-powered, 750-Vdc, rail rapid transit, fully grade-separated. An initial fleet of 64 cars was ordered, and an option for 10 more has been exercised. The project has been bid as a design-build-operate-maintain effort, with Siemens Transportation Systems, Inc., as the prime contractor. Work has been divided into six segments and bid by local contractors. Through the Systems Turnkey and Test Track contract, Siemens is responsible for all systems elements, including cars, power supply, signals, train control and communications, the yard and shop, and about 2 km of main line with two passenger stations. Systems elements are described, with emphasis on their origin in various countries in addition to the United States. The need for Buy America compliance is mentioned. Some car-borne equipment was designed and initial units were built overseas, with most production being done in U.S. plants owned or contracted by the suppliers. By using international sources, Siemens was able to be the lowest bidder and yet provide a quality system to meet the contract requirements.

La ciudad de Ponce ha tenido un desarrollo histórico sui generis y paralelo a la ciudad capital de Puerto Rico, San Juan, atendiendo a la morfología del espacio físico-geográfico donde se encuentra la misma. Toda la información recopilada y levantada para el presente artículo proviene del proyecto de investigación de Tesis de Doctorado sobre impactos causados por el turismo en las ciudades históricas de Ponce y San Juan e impactos causados en estos espacios por los eventos meteorológicos extremos. Las ciudades contemporáneas son una yuxtaposición entre lo contemporáneo y lo antiguo, entre la modernidad y la tradicionalidad, una realidad donde se superponen paisajes que responden a modelos urbanísticos distintos. Los espacios urbanos son un arreglo que varía en dependencia de la cultura y de la época, las ciudades están elaboradas y reelaboradas a partir de los que se aprecia y de cómo se aprecia al contemplar un espacio determinado, es una recreación de la realidad condicionada por la apreciación estética, las vivencias, el modo de vida o las carencias que se tengan en un momento determinado.El centro histórico de Ponce es un subsistema dentro de la ciudad, es la representación orgánica y completa de los subsistemas que la constituyen, es este el motivo del porqué analizando el crecimiento histórico desde todos los puntos de vista (desarrollo urbano, movilidad, comercio, espacios públicos, arquitectura), se puede descubrir el valor patrimonial intrínseco que posee, e incluye todas las propiedades comprendidas dentro del límite de la misma, lo que garantiza la morfología y la imagen urbana de dicha zona, añadiéndole el sector de la Playa y la Avenida de Hostos que une ambos centros urbanos. Ponce y su centro histórico han evolucionado y debe seguir evolucionando si quieren sobrevivir. The city of Ponce has had a historical development sui generis and parallel to the capital city of Puerto Rico, San Juan, attending to the morphology of the physical-geographic space where it is located. All the information gathered and raised for the present article comes from the project of investigation of Doctorate Thesis on impacts caused by the tourism in the historical cities of Ponce and San Juan and impacts caused in these spaces by the extreme meteorological events. Contemporary cities are a juxtaposition between the modern and the ancient, between modernity and tradition, a reality that overlaps landscapes that correspond to different urban models. Urban spaces are an arrangement that varies depending on culture and time, cities are re-elaborated from how it is appreciated when contemplating a certain space, is a recreation of reality conditioned by Aesthetic appreciation, experiences, mode of life or the shortcomings they have at any given time.The historical center of Ponce is a subsystem within the city, it is the organic and complete representation of the subsystems that constitute it, and so historical growth is analyzed from all points of view (urbanism, mobility, commerce, public spaces, Architecture). It is possible to discover the intrinsic heritage value that it possesses, which guarantees the morphology and the urban image of that area, adding the sector of the Beach and the Avenue of Hostos that unites both urban centers. Ponce and its historical center have evolved and should continue to evolve if they want to survive. The symbiosis between the historical and the contemporary must be natural and not imposed, the historical center, as well as the subsystems that compose it, must be accepted as an integral part of the city and not try to manage it and understand it as something isolated. Its personality has it from its integrality with the metropolitan area that contains it, and seeing the historical and the contemporary in isolation will always be to the detriment of the city as a single and indivisible territory.

ABSTRACT When the tank barge Morris J. Berman went aground near San Juan, Puerto Rico, the ensuing cleanup created the need for a major decontamination effort. A main decontamination site was established, with supplemental operations at six satellite sites. Mobile decontamination teams were dispatched as needed to a number of remote sites. In all, more than 100 personnel participated in the decontamination effort.

Pero lejos de ofrecer una visión unilateral del asesino que permita descifrarlo como un psicópata tradicional, la novela entrega un conjunto de versiones contradictorias que imposibilitan cualquier intento de clasificación. En el proceso, lo siniestro irrumpe en la novela pues el lector descubre que el asesino es el último defensor del “orden convencional” en una sociedad en franca descomposición.

Así, esta investigación contribuirá al estudio sincrónico de uso de las lenguas en la publicidad comercial o gubernamental, en el espacio público asociado con la identidad puertorriqueña. En el estudio se determinará si el uso de las lenguas en billboards de Carolina, Guaynabo y San Juan responde a la oficialización de las lenguas (español e inglés) en Puerto Rico, o si corresponde con la identidad lingüística de determinados grupos poblacionales. Abstract:

Objectives We chose to review the outcomes of tracheotomies performed at San Jorge Children's Hospital, San Juan, Puerto Rico, over the last 15 years. Our objectives were: 1) Understand changing trends in the indications for tracheotomy and a perceived reduction in decanulation rates. 2) Be able to propose recommendations for the coordinated care of children with tracheotomy. Methods A retrospective chart review was performed of 189 patients undergoing tracheotomy from January 1991 to December 2006. The data were tabulated for age, diagnosis, complications, and outcome. Patients were divided in groups based on the indication for tracheotomy. Results 5 groups were identified based on the indication for tracheotomy: 1) True vocal cord paralysis: 11% of the study population with a 25% decanulation rate. 2) Airway obstruction: 21% of the study population with a 90% decanulation rate. 3) Craniofacial malformation: 8% of the study population with a 0% decanulation rate. 4) Neurological impairment: 46% of the study population with a 0% decanulation rate. 5) Prolonged intubation: 14% of the study population with a 25% decanulation rate. We report no intraoperative complications, an 18% overall complication rate, and a 10% mortality. Conclusions Over the last decades, the indications for tracheotomy have shifted toward children with underlying neurological impairment and need for prolonged mechanical ventilation. Decanulation rates for these children are significantly lower (approximately 10%) than for children with obstructive airway pathology (90%). Therefore, the care of these children and their tracheotomies will require coordinated multidisciplinary settings. We present several recommendations to achieve this goal.

Abstract:

In spring 1513 Juan Ponce de León sailed north from Puerto Rico, cruised the Bahamas, and touched land somewhere on the southeastern corner of what is now the mainland United States. The season being Easter, and because of the “beautiful view of the many cool woodlands,” Ponce de León called the peninsula, which he believed an island, la Pascua Florida (T. Davis 17, 57). The rest of the story is decidedly less poetic. A squabble with Christopher Columbus's family, involving broader matters of legal jurisdiction, had driven the conquistador to new territories. His time in la Florida was brief but violent. After claiming ownership, Ponce de León provisioned his ships, skirmished with the natives, took hostages, then rounded the Martires (or Keys), where he met unfriendly Calusa on the gulf side (T. Davis 17-22). In February 1521 he returned, this time as adelantado, or governor, and again met the Calusa—who dealt him a mortal wound to the thigh. Ponce died in La Habana (Fernandina) the following July, and he now lies in the cathedral of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

In the brief span of 1952–68, Puerto Rico sped through its industrialization process. Middle-class residential construction dotted the city of San Juan. Hotels replaced the mansions along its Condado waterfront. The spanking new Medical Center promised health for the sickly, undernourished population, a health that the developmentalist program of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico—Operation Bootstrap—desperately needed, as it endeavored to offer a cheap, obedient, and presumably bilingual labor force to American capital. The “Golden Mile,” the financial district established in the area of the sometime royal hacienda, Hato Rey, emerged as the centerpiece of a new downtown. The mythic mall of Plaza Las Américas (formerly a cattle ranch that bred cows for the milk industry) became the social hub of a polis that increasingly turned to consumerism for its exercise of citizenship. Newspapers and magazines were filled with consumer fantasies of every variety. Along with everything else that was dazzling and new, Puerto Rico consumed a new object for sale, the celebrity pop star.
