This paper draws attention to a phenomenon at the intersection of pragmatics, discourse analysis and syntax known as tail-head linkage (THL) in Baïnounk Gubëeher and other West African languages spoken in Upper Guinea (Senegal, Guinea Bissau, Cabo Verde). THL is a discourse feature common in narratives and procedural texts, whereby phrases or parts of phrases are repeated in consecutive phrases to create discourse cohesion. Largely absent from European languages, THL is common in languages of Papua, Australia and the Amazon, but has not yet been described in depth for any African or so-called Creole languages. However, these structures are well attested in Atlantic languages spoken in the Casamance area and also in various of the regional Portuguese based Creoles. As these languages are not closely genetically related, THL is a good candidate for an areal feature. Drawing on a corpus of transcribed texts in Baïnounk Gubëeher and Joola Kujireray and Banjal as well as experimental data in those languages as well as four varieties of Upper Guinea Creoles (Santo Antão, São Vicente, Casamance, Bissau), the discursive function, frequency and the syntactic strategies for the use of these structures are described and compared.

AbstractThis chapter looks at the interrelation between Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK), language, and historical events within the context of the Nahuat-Pipil language of El Salvador. It deals with what some refer to as Indigenous Knowledge (IK), Traditional Knowledge (TK), or Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK), domains that position knowledge within broader contexts and social systems. The approaches and theories applied in this chapter are based on interactions with Indigenous people in western El Salvador from the towns of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, Nahuizalco, and Cuisnahuat where Nahuat-Pipil is most widely spoken. The research questions are a response to their specific request to conduct research on TEK, as ‘We are losing this knowledge, and without it we cannot call ourselves Indigenous’ (T. Pedro, personal communication, July 2012). Having established a baseline for understanding the motivations behind Indigenous interest in TEK, it is possible to then focus on the Nahuat-Pipil linguistic repertoire and how TEK is encoded within it. Thus, the investigation turns to the question of the ethnobiological categorization and classification of plants, how this is achieved by speakers of Nahuat-Pipil, and whether cognitive categorization strategies are reflected in the language itself. The investigation then examines folk nomenclature of plants by presenting their internal linguistic composition. The investigation of plant names is used to further inform the documentation efforts of Nahuat-Pipil by adding new focalized materials to the existing range of resources. The theoretical framework and methods employed to collect data for this body of research are interdisciplinary and draw largely upon ethnobotany, anthropology, the collection of oral histories, and sociolinguistics, in addition to my core background as a linguist and language documenter. By seeking to listen to and understand the requests of the language and speech community, this chapter thus aims to investigate how TEK informs the construction of sociocultural identity through language use, and how TEK itself is cognitively, culturally, and linguistically encoded in Nahuat-Pipil.

Abstract The history of linguistic investigation is full of discoveries. One of those discoveries was made by a Spanish Dominican friar known by the name of Domingo de Santo Toma’s. By way of introduction, the story of his insight will be told here to illustrate the theme and the approach of the present investigation. In 1540, Domingo de Santo Tome’s set sail from Spain on his way to Peru. He belonged to a group of missionaries that were recruited by Francisco Martine’z Toscano to work in this newly discovered part of South America. At that moment, only seven years after the defeat of the Inca Empire by Francisco Pizarro, the journey to this new Spanish territory must have been full of perils and uncertainty. Yet, Domingo de Santo Toma’s survived the trip and managed to do his missionary work among the native people of Peru. His catechistic work made him an expert in the ‘lengua general’, the general language spoken in the region, nowadays referred to as Quechua. In 1555, after fifteen years of missionary work, Domingo de Santo Toma’s returned to Spain, determined to carry out much work. Among many other things, he had taken on the task of informing the authorities in Spain about the miserable situation of the native people of Peru. Further, he wanted to take care in person of the printing of his grammar-cum-dictionary of the Quechua language.

Abstract This final chapter is intended not to conclude but to sharpen a focus on process and change. As both a reprise and an extension of issues within the book, here I describe comparative travel and follow-up research trips between May 1989 and September 1995, which took some unforeseen turns. During my final months of research in 1989, I journeyed west toward Nola and Bayanga. I was eager to meet BaAka from this region, who call themselves BaAka Bambenjele, because as far away as Bagandou these BaAka have something of a reputation as exceptional dancers and singers.1 As I expected from hearsay in Bagandou, though, around the large town of Nola, Centrafrican Baptists had been active with the pygmies for years. I stayed in Nola for a few days with a local Peace Corps worker named Susan. On Sunday, Susan’s neighbor Jean-Pierre-the pastor I’d interviewed the previous day (described in chapter 8)-took us to a service among BaAka who live along the road outside town. This Baptist service did not have the ad hoc leeway of the service at Dzanga; the pastor led the prayers, mostly in Sango, and these BaAka-much more familiar with Sango and long exposed to missionaries-followed obediently. Nevertheless, I found the musical aspects intriguing. Like the Grace Brethren, the Baptists have been in Centrafrique since the early 1920s, but like many other Christian sects, their hymns in Sango have been “Africanized;’ with syncopated phrasing and parallel harmonies in intervals of thirds, fourths, and fifths, accompanied by lively but unvarying drum rhythms that emphasize one central downbeat. Most striking, though, is that BaAka here have been Christians long enough to have developed at least one hymn in their own language, and I was startled to hear them sing it in overlapping, pygmy fashion (CD 2:11). Unlike the other hymns, this one had words buried within layers of interlaced phrases, with harmonies in seconds and vowel sounds of “oh”s and “eh”s (though without the trademark “eeya”s). Although the form of this song was not as dynamic as most BaAka singing, it carried an unmistakably BaAka sensibility. This was the first time I’d seen BaAka reconfigure Christian material into their own style.

This article, initially published in the journal Contribuciones a Las Ciencias Sociales, addresses school inclusion from the perspective of Lev Vygotsky's Historical-Cultural Theory, seeking to offer theoretical subsidies for the understanding of the relationship between learning and language development by relating the interlocutions with a pedagogical practice in the public school of Espírito Santo. It highlights the World Conference on Education for All, which defends school inclusion, and legal measures, such as Law No. 10,436/02, which aims to guarantee school access and participation for all. The research, carried out through the participatory methodology, reports the experience with a deaf student and her multi-segregated class, in a settlement school, located in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. It highlights the importance of collaborative work between teachers of Specialized Educational Service (AEE), regular teaching and Libras interpreter to promote the psychic development of students in signifying the cultural and social. It reaffirms the relevance of the school as a space for learning and mediation in the process of hominization.

Feira do Relógio on Avenida de Santo Condestável in Lisbon, is a "feira de levante" that is set up and dismantled every Sunday on the road. The road for cars becomes pedestrian, and is revealed as a support contrasted with the fabrics, poles and removable tables that house goods on the asphalt. This work investigates the relationship between the specific conditioning factors of the context and the generative operatives of the case from its varied formalizations.
