Abstract:
At the opening of the Finnish section of the New York World’s Fair on May 4, 1939, the Finlandia Male Chorus performed; the choir had been founded especially for the trip to North America, and in particular for performing at the New York World’s Fair. In addition to general coverage in the press, the choir’s travel plans, its preparations, and the trip itself were followed on many different radio broadcasts. What did Mieskuoro Finlandia want to tell about Finland at the New York World’s Fair in the spring of 1939? How was the choir founded, how did it work towards the goal of its journey, and what did it do afterwards? Answers to these questions are sought here especially through the concepts of cultural diplomacy and country image. According to the article, the Finlandia Male Chorus’ activities serve as a good example of the creation of a country’s image implemented through the means of cultural diplomacy, which also includes cultural propaganda, i.e. the promotion of a country using its culture as a tool. The methodological approach of the article is situated in the cultural and historical research field of music.

Abstract:
Comparative literature and cognitive literary studies both consider literature as a worldwide phenomenon. The move toward world literature in comparative literature made salient the issue of reading some texts in translation, and world literature turned its attention to whether texts are entirely translatable and how center and periphery in the “world republic of literature” are organized around languages that are predominantly translated (or translated into). This article proposes that cognitive literary studies and comparative literature could enter into conversation around the topic of language differences and translation. For cognitive literary studies, the approaches of predictive processing and embodied cognition have in recent years developed the conceptual means to include these differences in our discussions without falling back on the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis. Language shapes thought, but it does so in a flexible exchange between verbal markers and language-created contexts. The author models this exchange for literary texts by means of salient verbal markers that indicate plot events and outlines possible shared avenues of future research for cognitive literary studies and comparative literature along these lines. The examples discussed are the Finnish national epic Kalevala, its French and English translations, and the contemporary novel Sankarit by Johanna Sinisalo.

Abstract:
In the religion studies, al-Asmā’ al-Ḥusnā refers to the beautiful names of God, which such phrase is never ascribed to His creations, but only unto Him alone, as prescribed in the notion of tawhīd. In Hinduism, the theological concept is addressed as eka aneka. Eka means one, while aneka means not one or many. Therefore, eka aneka means God in Hinduism is one but also aneka, which has many manifestations, incarnations, and different from the concept of tawḥīd in Islam. In 2015, Uthaya Sankar, a famous Hindu writer, claims that the Hindu concept of eka aneka is similar to the concept of al-Asmā’ al-Ḥusnā in Islam in his Malay language book titled Malaiur Manikam. Therefore, this research aims to study the intellectual background of Uthaya Sankar and his book Malaiur Manikam. Then this research intends to describe the concept of eka aneka as prescribed by Uthaya Sankar in his Malaiur Manikam and also to investigate Uthaya Sankar’s view of equalizing the concept of eka aneka with the concept of al-Asmā’ al-Husnā in Islam. This research applies the qualitative approach, namely content analysis method on the Malaiur Manikam text. As a result, this research found that the Hindu concept of eka aneka cannot be equalised with the concept of al-Asmā’ al-Ḥusnā in Islam. This is due to the fact that although Allah has 99 names, but Allah is one (tawḥīd) in His essence (dhāt), actions (afcāl) and names (asmā’), as well as does not incarnate into any forms or manifestations. On the contrary, even though the Hindu God is one, but it incarnates into various forms and manifestations. Thus, this finding can enlighten the Muslims and the non-Muslims on the concept of tawḥīd al-Asmā’ al-Husnā vis-a-vis eka aneka, and also evaluate Uthaya Sankar’s notion of equalizing the Hindu concept of eka aneka with the concept al-Asmā’ al-Husnā in Islam.

Abstract:
Tujuan dari penelitian yaitu untuk mengetahui peranan Pelatihan CHSE dalam meningkatkan kinerja karyawan, dikarenakan baru dua komponen saja yang sudah diterapkan oleh Hotel The Sankara Suite yaitu Clean dan Health untuk komponen security dan environment lingkungan belum terpenuhi semuanya, karena dalam mendukung industri pariwisata dan ekonomi kreatif di tengah pandemi yang belum juga usai, hotel harus menerapkan CHSE (Clean, Health, Safety, Environment) agar terciptanya kebersihan, kesehatan, keamanan dan ramah lingkungan. Penelitian ini dilakukan di Hotel The Sankara Suite yaitu pada bulan April sampai dengan Juni 2021. Metode analisis data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah kualitatif deskriptif yang digunakan untuk mengetahui peranan pelatihan CHSE dalam meningkatkan kinerja karyawan HRD The Sankara Suite, dengan tahapan analisis data: 1. Pengumpulan data, 2. Reduksi data, 3. Penyajian data, dan 4. Penyajian data. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pelatihan CHSE memberikan peranan dalam meningkatkan kinerja karyawan HRD The Sankara Suite, yang didasari oleh 4 faktor yang saling berhubungan yaitu: Kebersihan, Kesehatan, Keselamatan, dan Lingkungan. Pentingnya menjaga kebersihan, kesehatan dan keramah lingkungan dengan menggunakan pelatihan CHSE bagi Karyawan HRD di The Sankara Suite agar HRD bisa kembali kerja dengan rasa aman seperti bagaimana biasanya dan mendatangkan tamu seperti sebelum pandemi. Sertifikasi CHSE yang diusung oleh kemenparkraf ini tentunya bertujuan untuk mengembalikan kepercayaan wisatawan untuk berkunjung kembali ke destinasi wisata. Diharapkan agar pihak Hotel The Sankara Suite meminta pihak manajemen Hotel untuk mensupport Hotel The Sankara Suite menjadi hemat energy agar penilaian CHSE di The Sankara Suite bisa semua terpenuhi. Hal tersebut juga akan sangat berpengaruh terhadap kegiatan operasional Hotel.
 
 The purpose of the research is to find out the role of CHSE Training in improving employee performance, because only two components that have been implemented by The Sankara Suite Hotel, namely Clean and Health for security and environmental components have not been fulfilled, because in supporting the tourism industry and the creative economy in In the midst of a pandemic that has not yet ended, hotels must implement CHSE (Clean, Health, Safety, Environment) in order to create cleanliness, health, security and environmental friendliness. This research was conducted at The Sankara Suite Hotel, from April to June 2021. The data analysis method used in this study was descriptive qualitative which was used to determine the role of CHSE training in improving the performance of HRD The Sankara Suite employees, with data analysis stages: 1 Data collection, 2. Data reduction, 3. Data presentation, and 4. Data presentation. The results of this study indicate that CHSE training plays a role in improving the performance of HRD The Sankara Suite employees, which is based on 4 interrelated factors, namely: Cleanliness, Health, Safety, and Environment. The importance of maintaining cleanliness, health and environmental friendliness by using CHSE training for HRD Employees at The Sankara Suite so that HRD can return to work safely as usual and bring in guests like before the pandemic. The CHSE certification carried out by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy of course aims to restore the confidence of tourists to return to tourist destinations. It is hoped that The Sankara Suite Hotel will ask the Hotel management to support The Sankara Suite Hotel to be energy efficient so that the CHSE assessment at The Sankara Suite can all be fulfilled. This will also greatly affect the hotel's operational activities

The idea of unity arises in the Vedas in the world of Indian philosophy. Though there is a natural worship, it is finally discovered that all the gods are the same power. In later times, all the deities were worshipped as Prajapati. The thought of unity continued to be immersed in the upanishads that finally arose in the Vedas. The lord was called Brahmma. In the period, Sankara has given importance to Advaita thought, in order to clarify the views found in the Upanishads. The Advaita theory speaks of the fact that it is a true object. That is The Brahman, and there is no defect in it. For this he speaks of vivatvatism, prativivavada, and avatarvatism. He is strongly presenting the idea that the world and life arise from the Brahmana. But the following principles of Vishitatvaita, Dvaita and Saiva saivism are the three truthful of the Lord, life and the world. But they too are willing to speak of the lord who is not less. In this way, we cansee that the advaita doctrine of Sankarar cannot be presented as a description of the doctrine by refusing or standing away. So all theories speak of a true object in the end, which is the object of the divine doctrine that is now widely worshipped throughout the world. The Vedas, Upanishads, Vedanta and Saiva siddhanta concepts are presented to the forefront of this article. The study is explained in a way that is compared with history to find out the truth of the study.

Tutkin Dome Karukosken Napapiirin sankarit -elokuvan (2010) representoimia erilaisia maskuliinisuuksia. Analysoin eritoten kotinurkkiin majailemaan jääneiden, syrjäytyneiden ja työttömien miesten — niin sanottujen peräkammarin poikien — maskuliinisuutta ja heidän muuttumistaan elokuvan esittämän vuorokauden aikana. Käytin kehittelemääni peräkammarimaskuliinisuuden termiä analysoidakseni tarkemmin mieshahmoja ja heidän ”muuttujiaan”. Hyödynsin Jukka Sankalan (2009 & 2011) tutkimuksia Lapin peräkammarin poikamiesten arjesta ja identiteettikäsityksistä. Lähdekirjallisuutena käytin myös kriittisten maskuliinisuuksien tutkimuksia sekä elokuvatutkimuksen teorioita, joita hyödynsin varsinkin road-genrestä kirjoittaessani. Analysoin Napapiirin sankareita elokuvallisen tekstin lähiluvun kautta. Napapiirin sankarit täyttää road-genren elokuvan merkittävimmät määritelmät: identiteetin uudistamisen tarinassa, jossa lähdetään kotoa ja sinne palataan muuttuneena (Römpötti 2012; Cohan & Hark 1997; Laderman 2002). Napapiirin sankarit on toisaalta kolmen miehen — Jannen, Kapun ja Tapion — kasvukertomus, toisaalta aikalaisdiagnoosi. Elokuva tarjoaa näkökulmia arktisen hysterian ilmiöön, johon liitetään muun maussa synkkyyden, syrjäytymisen ja kuoleman teemoja (Ihonen 1999). Matkan syynä oleva digiboksin hankkiminen on lopulta Jannelle asetettu miehuuskoe: raskaana oleva avopuoliso testaa, onko Jannesta vastuulliseksi isäksi. Kapu puolestaan taistelee menneisyyden traumojen kanssa, ja Tapion on itsenäistyttävä voimakkaasta äidistään. Vuorokauden aikana Janne, Kapu ja Tapio uudistavat identiteettinsä passiivisista luovuttajista voimaantuneiksi miehiksi. Jannen kilpailijassa Mikossa on hegemonisen maskuliinisuuden vaatimia kriteereitä: hän on vauras ja työssäkäyvä mies (Jokinen 2000 & 2012; Sipilä 1994). Pinnalta katsottuna Mikko on epäeettinen hahmo, koska hän haluaa voittaa entisen tyttöystävänsä Inarin itselleen epärehellisin keinoin. Janne sitä vastoin on sympaattinen peräkammarin poika, joka saa katsojan kunnioittamaan itseään. Kuitenkin myös Janne käyttää epärehellisiä keinoja saadakseen rahat digiboksiin, ja lopulta hän tavoittelee juuri sitä, mitä Mikolla on: statusta ja turvallisuutta. Napapiirin sankarit onkin pohjimmiltaan kesyyntymistarina miehen normin täyttämisestä. Peräkammarimaskuliinisuudesta on elokuvan mukaan kasvettava pois, mutta samalla edes puhtaan hegemoninen maskuliinisuus ei ole tavoiteltavaa miehuutta, vaan myös sitä on täydennettävä. Napapiirin sankarit ei siis lopulta vastaa kysymykseen siitä, mikä on maskuliinisuuden ideaali. Jää epäselväksi, millainen tulevaisuus mieskolmikkoa odottaa. Toin tutkielmassani esille, että peräkammarimaskuliinisuus kumpuaa osaksi arktisen hysterian rakenteista. Niiden välistä suhdetta olisi mielenkiintoista ja antoisaa tutkia lisää. Napapiirin sankarit -elokuvan tuleva jatko-osa puolestaan tarjoaisi kiinnostavan mahdollisuuden tutkia miesten kehitystarinaa vielä pidemmälle.

Abstract:
This paper is a comparative project between a philosopher from the Western tradition, Aristotle, and a philosopher from the Eastern tradition, Sankara. These two philosophers have often been thought to oppose one another in their thoughts, but I will argue that they are similar in several aspects. I will explore connections between Aristotle and Sankara, primarily in their theories of causation. I will argue that a closer examination of both Aristotelian and Advaita Vedanta philosophy, of which Sankara is considered the most prominent thinker, will yield significant similarities that will give new insights into the thoughts of both Aristotle and Sankara.

A tese tem por objetivo efetivar a análise e demonstração das estratégias discursivas através das quais Çaìkara, o célebre pensador do Hinduísmo medieval (circa 788-820 d.C.), formulou a doutrina monista do Advaita-ved Tnta, construindo para isso um discurso dialógico com relação às principais doutrinas dualistas e ritualísticas adversárias de seu tempo, dentre elas, respectivamente, o S TRkhya-Yoga-darçana e o Mémäàsä-darçana. A análise dos textos sânscritos de Çaìkara dedicados a interpretar as escrituras védicas segue os pressupostos da teoria do discurso, da semiótica de nivel fundamental e dos estudos de intertextualidade, e radica em dois eixos: (1) - o estudo da construção de um discurso monista, apesar das exigências irredutíveis das categorias binárias às quais se curvam a linguagem e o raciocínio humanos; e (2) - o exame dos mecanismos diversos de persuasão e argumentação constantes nos escritos do pensador, os quais constroem uma interpretação específica dos textos védicos ao mesmo tempo em que refutam pontos de vista outrora válidos na tradição sânscrita. A primeira parte da tese, intitulada \"A revelação do Um\", apresenta uma síntese da herança cultural que é pressuposta na leitura dos textos do pensador e uma análise semiótica da articulação, no nível fundamental, do conceito de Absoluto ou \"um-sem-segundo\", Brahman, conforme descrito nas Upaniñad e interpretado por Çaìkara. A segunda parte, intitulada \"Os percursos do dois\", investiga as estratégias discursivas e intertextuais por meio das quais o pensador consegue ressignificar e assimilar em sua doutrina monista o universo relativo e as categorias binárias e ternárias afirmadas em outras doutrinas de sua herança cultural. A tese visa a contribuir para a demonstração de que as teorias do discurso constituem instrumentos que auxiliam a elucidar os mecanismos com os quais a linguagem verbal consegue criar e expressar conceitos abstratos não apreensíveis no mundo dos fenômenos. O trabalho representa também um esforço para suprir uma lacuna da bibliografia brasileira, apresentando sob enfoque inédito fontes textuais relativos a uma vertente nuclear da cultura sânscrita.<br>The main purpose of this thesis is to analyse and demonstrate those discursive strategies through which Çaìkara, the famous philosopher of medieval Hinduism (circa 788-820 a.C.), has formulated the monistic doctrine of Advaita-vedänta, to which purpose he has elaborated a dialogical discourse in relation to some of the main dualistic and ritualistic opposing doctrines of his time: the Säàkhya-Yoga-darçana and the Mémäàsä-darçana, respectively. Our analysis of the sanskrit texts in which Çaìkara interprets the vedic scriptures is based on the theories of discourse, on the principles of the French school of Semiotics and also on studies of intertextuality. This inedit analysis intends to: (1) - analyse the inter-relation of concepts in the fundamental level of significance that can build a monistic discourse, in spite of those irreductible binary categories that govern human language and reasoning; (2) - examine those mechanisms of persuasion and argumentation which are constant in Çaìkara\'s writings and which help to build specific interpretations of the vedic scriptures, refuting at the same time the points of view of other doctrines. The first part of the thesis, entitled \"The revelation of One\", gives a synthesis of the cultural heritage which is pressuposed in the reading of Çaìkara\'s writings, and afterwards makes a semiotic analysis, on the fundamental level, of the concept of Absolute or \"one-without-a-second\", Brahman, according to the way it\'s given by the Upaniñad texts and interpreted by Çaìkara. In the second part of the thesis, entitled \"Paths of the Two\", are analysed some of those discoursive and intertextual mechanisms through which the thinker can re-signify and assimilate into his monistic doctrine the relative universe and those binary and ternary categories according to what was postulated by other doctrines of his cultural heritage. The thesis contributes to demonstrate that the theories of discourse are valid instruments in the process of analysis of those mechanisms through which verbal language can create and express abstract concepts which, at first, are not aprehensible in the world of phenomenae. The work has also the purpose of adding to brazilian bibliography, under an inedit approach, texts belonging to an important aspect of sanskrit culture.

Abstract:
The first chapter explores an anachronistic Kantian critique of Plotinus wherein Plotinus' notion of the One and the soul's ascent to the One is discussed. In the second part of the chapter it will be argued that despite Plotinus' via negativa approach to the One, he commits what Kant calls a transcendental illusion. At this time, Kant's conditions of experience and knowledge are discussed, to show what constitutes as experience. Then, Kant's notion of transcendental illusion is discussed, specifically in its paralogistic and ideal forms. From this discussion, it is evident that Plotinus' idea of the soul is a paralogistic error and his idea of the One becomes the Ideal of pure reason, thereby mistaking the Ideal of the One as constituting ultimate existence. Following this Kantian critique, the second chapter discusses Úankara's view of Âtman. The exposition demonstrates that Úankara's approach is essentially via negativa, that while it is the most humble approach to Brahman, yet it is unable to account for the absolute reality that is essentially ineffable. This discussion focuses on Úankara's belief that people falsely attribute or superimpose qualities to the true Self, because of Avidyâ and that only true knowledge transforms Avidyâ into vidyâ or discriminating knowledge. After this discussion, some criticisms are discussed to show some apparent problems with Úankara's view. At which time, it will be argued that despite Úankara's use of via negativa he commits what Kant calls a "transcendental illusion." We do not have an empirical intuition of the concept of Brahman; therefore, we have neither access to the mystical reality of Brahman as a thing in itself, nor to true knowledge about ultimate reality. Thus, Úankara's view engenders transcendental illusion. The final chapter addresses Schelling's idealism and in particular the view of the potencies at work in God, before God was God. Due to creation, an inversion of the potencies occurs and the outer gains control over the inner. Next, elements of Habermas' view are discussed, wherein he holds a materialistic-interactive-idealist position, as indicated in his ideal speech situation. At this time, it will be argued that Habermas' "ideal speech situation" is idealistic like Schelling's position. Consequently, both Schelling and Habermas' reaction respectively make the Primordial Will and the Ideal Speech Situation into an Ideal and in so doing commits a transcendental illusion.

Abstract:
This study is a comparison of the philosophical systems composed by the Indian philosopher Sankara (788-830 CE), and the Muslim mystic, Ibn Arabi (1165-1240 CE). The primary thesis found in this study is that the conceptual systems constructed by Sankara and Ibn Arabi are not perfectly new creations derived from the core of their mystical realizations. Rather, they contain fundamental pre-existing principles, concepts, and teachings that are expanded upon and placed within a systematic philosophy or theology that is intended to lead others to a state of realization. A selection of these presuppositions are extracted from within each of these thinkers’ philosophical systems and employed as structural indicators. Similarities are highlighted, yet the differences between Sankara and Ibn Arabi’s thought, witnessed within their philosophical systems, lead us to the conclusion that the two mystics inhabited different conceptual space.<br>iv, 195 leaves ; 29 cm

Abstract:
La rivoluzione burkinabé, scoppiata il 4 agosto 1983 e guidata da Thomas Sankara, ha prodotto diversi importanti cambiamenti politici, economici e sociali nel Burkina Faso. Forse il segno più importante l'ha lasciato nelle menti e nei cuori della popolazione burkinabé: la convinzione che le cose si possono cambiare con coraggio e determinazione, che nulla è già deciso e che si può dire “no”, sia pur pagandolo a caro prezzo, a meccanismi di assoggettamento e impoverimento imposti dai grandi poteri internazionali. È questo il messaggio che la rivoluzione di Sankara ha lasciato, non solo in Burkina, ma in tutta l'Africa. Il paese degli Uomini Integri, al 183esimo posto nella classifica dell'Indice di Sviluppo Umano, versava e versa tuttora nella miseria, con problemi di ogni sorta: ma con l'esperienza vissuta negli anni ‘80 ha acquisito la consapevolezza che le cose non sono sempre state così, che ci sono cause storiche precise di questa condizione di miseria. Tali cause sono: il colonialismo prima, la “ri-colonizzazione” poi. Queste sono le radici dei problemi sia del Burkina che di tutti gli Stati africani che hanno subito eventi storici simili nei secoli passati. Ecco perché Sankara è considerato una speranza per tutti i popoli oppressi, africani e non. L'obiettivo di questo elaborato è quello di mettere in luce tali cause e dimostrare come gli effetti prodotti da esse continuino a ripercuotersi sul popolo burkinabé, senza che vi siano sostanziali miglioramenti, ad eccezione dei quattro anni di governo di Sankara.

Abstract:
Forced convection film boiling heat transfer from a horizontal cylinder in water and Freon-113 flowing upward perpendicular to the cylinder under subcooled conditions was measured for the flow velocities from 0 to 1 m/s at the system pressures ranging from 100 to 500 kPa: the platinum horizontal cylinders with diameters ranging from 0.7 to 5 mm were used as the test heaters. The film boiling heat transfer coefficients were obtained for the surface superheats from about 800 K for water and from about 400 K for Freon-113 down to minimum film boiling surface superheats. These heat transfer coefficients increase with the increase in flow velocity, liquid subcooling, system pressure, and with the decrease in cylinder diameter. A correlation for subcooled forced convection film boiling heat transfer was presented, which can describe the experimental data obtained within ±20% for the flow velocities below 0.7 m/s, and within −30% to +20% for the higher flow velocities. The correlation also predicted well the data by Shigechi (1983), Motte and Bromley (1957), and Sankaran and Witte (1990) obtained for the larger diameter cylinders and higher flow velocities in various liquids at the pressures of near atmospheric. The Shigechi’s data were in the range from about −20% to +15%, the data of Motte and Bromley were about ±30%, and the data of Sankaran and Witte were within +20% of the curves given by the corresponding predicted values.

Abstract:
Introduction: The HINTS protocol is important to differentiate peripheral from central vertigo in Acute Vestibular Syndrome (AVS). There are studies that show almost 1/3 of patients have posterior circulation stroke. It is important to investigate why this happens. Objectives: Review the accuracy of HINTS test in the diagnosis of posterior circulation stroke. Methods: Review conducted in PubMed using key words “HINTS AND ACCURACY AND STROKE”. The search found 9 articles, 7 of which were included. Results: Tehrani et al. (2014) studied HINTS’s accuracy when associated with hearing loss, resulting on a bigger accuracy than MRI. Newman- Toker et al. (2013) found that HINTS score was superior than ABCD2 in identifying AVS caused by stroke. From Carmona et al. (2016), HINTS had 100 % sensibility and 94,4% specificity and emphasized ataxia evaluation’s importance, once all patients with central etiology had a grade of ataxia. Krishnan et al. (2019) HINTS had 59,9% Negative Predictive Value (NPV) and 97,2 % Positive Predictive Value (PPV) related to stroke, same PPV was found by Sankalia et al. (2021). Ohle et al. (2020) observed that HINTS done by a neurologist was more accurate than studies that mixed neurologists and emergency physicians. Dmitriew et al. (2021) saw that HINTS was used wrongly in non-specific emergency departments, once only 3,1% patients tested had AVS and 96,9% wrongly tested had false positives. Conclusion: The HINTS is a valuable instrument in the clinical use and the training for better practical application needs incentive in emergency departments.

Abstract:
With the new advancement in the vibration control strategies and controllable actuator manufacturing, the semi-active actuators (dampers) are finding their way as an essential part of vibration isolators, particularly in vehicle suspension systems. The currently available semi-active damper technologies can be divided into two main groups. The first uses controllable electromagnetic valves. The second uses magnetorheological (MR) fluid to control the damping characteristics of the system. Despite different semi-active control methods and the type of actuators used, one important practical aspect of all hydro-mechanical computer controlled systems is the time response (delay). The longest time response (delay) is usually introduced by the actuator (in this case, controllable actuator) in the system. This paper investigates the effect of time response in an on-off controlled suspension system using semi-active dampers. Numerical simulations and analytical techniques are deployed to address the issue. The performance of the system due to the time response is then analyzed and discussed. Specifically, the effect of the time response on the performance of a quarter car suspension system controlled by conventional on-off control strategies such as Skyhook and Rakheja-Sankar (R-S) is studied. Finally, the test results measuring time response in a newly developed semi-active actuator (namely, an external solenoid valve damper) is presented. Based on the real data and numerical simulations, the performance of a one degree of freedom quarter car system using this actuator is presented.

Hydro-pneumatic dampers are widely used in military and heavy vehicle suspension systems, where large suspension travel (more than 20 inches) is expected. Due to the nonlinear characteristics of these elements, suspension system performance and in particular ride comfort and road handling capabilities of the vehicle are altered. Although these nonlinear characteristics are inherent in nearly all vehicles suspension systems, their effects are dominant in certain maneuvers and especially in off-road conditions where the suspension system experiences rather large displacements. This paper investigates the control of a hydropneumatic damper suspension system, a highly nonlinear system comprised of a pneumatic spring (gas-spring) and a hydraulic damper. First, the hydro-pneumatic damper of a military vehicle is modeled. The model is validated using experiments performed with a dynamometer test machine. Based on the validated model, a 2DOF quarter car model is developed, simulated and analyzed. Secondly, the performance of two well-known semiactive control methods - Skyhook and Rakheja-Sankar (R-S) - are investigated as applied to suspension control in the 2DOF car model. To analyze the performance of these control strategies in the suspension systems where the nonlinear components exist, the method of averaging is deployed. Finally, a new control strategy based on Skyhook and R-S is proposed to address ride comfort and road handling utilizing the variable stiffness gas-spring together with a semiactive damper. The results of this new controller are then compared to that of several well known suspension control methods such as Skyhook to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.
