Abstract:
Several criteria are available in practice to assess the liquefaction susceptibility of soils. Examples are the so-called Chinese Criteria and more recent criteria, such as Andrews and Martin (2000) , Seed et al. (2003) , Bray and Sancio (2006) , and Boulanger and Idriss (2006) . Many of these criteria utilize different soil indices, behavioral states, and limiting values, which make the use of the various criteria in practice confusing at times. The purpose of this paper is to provide practical considerations in the use of three of the most recent and commonly used liquefaction susceptibility criteria— Seed et al. 2003 , Bray and Sancio 2006 , and Boulanger and Idriss 2006 —by addressing three questions often asked in practice: (1) What soils can liquefaction susceptibility criteria be used? (2) What information is provided by liquefaction susceptibility criteria? (3) What is the best use of liquefaction susceptibility criteria?

Abstract:
Tax credit management system (TCMS) implemented by the State Administration of Taxation (SAT) of China in 2014 is an innovative mechanism of tax collection and management. This paper attempts to incorporate the TCMS into the model of Allingham and Sandmo [Allingham, M. G. and Sandmo, A., Income tax evasion: A theoretical analysis, [Formula: see text]. Public Econ. 1(3–4) (1972) 323–338], and then proposes an agent-based tax compliance model combined with EWA model. In this model, enterprises are divided into three categories: enterprises paying taxes for better credit, paying taxes to avoid a punishment, and not paying taxes. Enterprises can borrow from banks based on their own tax credit rating. The experimental results based on the model show that: (i) When the probability of spot check is low, the actual tax behavior of some enterprises is inconsistent with the results of tax credit publicized by tax authorities. (ii) In order to reduce the proportion of tax evasion, we try to change the parameter variables of integral reward, audit probability, punishment, financial subsidy and loan interest rate. The results show that the punishment of fixed high loan interest rate on tax evasion enterprises can effectively restrain tax evasion and increase the proportion of enterprises with high credit rating.

Abstract:
Every day the dependence on transportation grows as local, regional, national, and international independence increases. Resilient transportation systems are needed to secure the highest possible level of service during disruptive events, including natural and man-made disasters. Because of limited resources, decision makers need guidance on how, when, and where to invest to improve resiliency of their networks. The research objective is to develop a method to assess and quantify resiliency, at pre-event conditions, using a fuzzy inference approach. This research expands previous work, refining key variable definitions, adjusting model interactions, and increasing transparency between metrics. This thesis presents the method and provides an illustrative example of the methodology using the Dominican Republic as a case study. The example explains how a transportation network responds to a disruptive event and how specific investments can increase resiliency of the network. The result of this research is a quantitative basis for decision makers to conduct cost-benefit analysis of resiliency increasing projects.

Abstract:

This report is the final thesis and the conclusion of the final project that was done during the spring semester of 2009, in the city of Santo Domingo, The Dominican Republic, West Indies by Caroline Knutsson and Kristina Myrberg.

The project is based on the field studies that are done in the investigation together with the information from interviews from the construction sites and the collected information from the research. The focus is concentrated in an investigation about the construction techniques that are used, the building materials and the working conditions on the construction site. A study has been done of a Swedish model of urban planning with environmental objects (SAMS), made by the National Board of Housing, Building and Planning (Boverket), and successively applied in a project in South Africa. With the purpose of investigate if it is possible to apply the same model in the Dominican Republic, a review of the current environmental- and urban planning in the country has been done.  Through the studies we think that an introduction of planning with environmental objectives and a development towards a sustainable and ecological society is possible in the Dominican Republic.

After field studies on the construction sites, it was relevant to discuss the working conditions and the safety for the constructers.

The thesis also deal with the waste problem, since it is a problem that is not taken care of neither in the building sector or in the society. The suggestion is to recycle and reuse more of the waste, especially all the concrete that is used in the buildings. Sweden have come a long way ahead in the questions of sustainable housing and ecological building, to spare and reduce the effect the building sector has on the environment. This is questions of more importance than ever today, when we are seeing the effects of the climate change in the world. An investigation is done of the possibility to apply any of the methods that are used in Sweden today to make the housing more sustainable and environmentally friendly, also in The Dominican Republic. The result is some suggestions of methods and technologies that might be applicable in the Dominican Republic.

Abstract:
Sumona Mukhopadhyay, Mala Mitra and Santo Banerjee have proposed a method of digital cryptography inspired from Genetic Algorithm(GA) and synchronization of chaotic delayed system. The chapter introduces a brief idea about the concept of Evolutionary Algorithm(EA) and demonstrates how the potential of dynamical system such as chaos and EA can be utilized in a reliable, efficient and computational cheaper method for secure communication. GA is a subclass of Evolutionary algorithm and as such is governed by the rules of organic evolution. In GA the selection mechanism and both transformation operators-crossover and mutation are probabilistic. In their proposed method for cryptography, the parameters and  keys of the system are secure since the synchronized dynamical system does not necessitate the transmission of keys over the communication channel. The random sequence obtained from chaotic generator further transforms it into a powerful stochastic method of searching the solution space in varied directions for an optimal solution escaping points of local optima. But randomicity can sometimes destabilize the system and there is no guarantee that it yields an improved solution. The authors have substituted the random and probabilistic selection operator of GA with problem specific operator to design the cryptosystem to control such random behavior otherwise it would lead to a solution which is uncorrelated with the original message and may also lead to loss of information. The way selection has been modified leads to two versions of the proposed genetic engineering algorithm for cryptography. Simulation results demonstrates that both the flavors of the proposed cryptography successfully recover the message. A comparison of their proposed method of cryptography with cryptography  developed from Comma-Based Recombination selection mechanism of Evolutionary Strategy shows a computational edge of their proposed work.

Abstract:
Debris containment grid is an important part of hydroelectric power plant, since it retains objects, preventing damage to the turbine. In the case of the Santo Antonio hydropower plant, located in the Amazon rainforest, in the north of Brazil, the most significant debris are logs. This paper aims to analyze the interaction between several log boom modules (type of debris containment grids developed specifically for containing logs) present in a debris containment line present in Santo Antonio hydropower plant, as well as its interactions with the fluid, varying the advance velocity and side-slip angle. The analysis of the fluid-body interaction is performed using CFD software with Finite Volume Method approach. The problem is divided into steps. Firstly, one log boom module is simulated with several velocities and side-slip flow angle, obtaining a relation between forces, moments and movements. Next, in order to save the expected computational cost, the module is analyzed and compared through the porosity approach. Finally, the analysis of a line with several log boom modules, including the interaction between each module, is carried out. The results of the simulations will allow to perform an analysis of the line stability, obtaining the forces, moments and movements of each log boom module, observing its influence in the log boom line. With a fluid-body hydrodynamic analysis of several modules in a line, data are provided for a structural analysis. Since the porosity approach is used to reduce the computational cost, this paper also contributes to similar cases, with a main interest in larger scales of forces and movements.

Abstract:
This paper analyses which parameters may be in fact contributing for changing in water quality in Suruaca coastal lowland region, north of Espirito Santo, Brazil (Fig. 1). It is a low and plain area, with freatic level near surface, highly deforested, where there is a dominance of activities such as petroleum exploration and production, extensive cattle breeding and plantations of eucalyptus trees. Water quality monitoring surveys that have been carried out comprise 27 parameters at total, and some anomalies have been reported. From bibliographic search and interview with people who know the area, main economic activities in the region are defined, as well as raw materials utilized by them. Raw materials are analised by means of leaching, solubility, X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence. Thus, it is tried to find links between parameters with anomalous concentrations and economic activities. Besides human sources, there are natural sources that are also contributing for changing the water quality of the region, but they are only mentioned in this paper. This paper shows that not all parameters analised need a continuity of monitoring, since both the characteristics of the economic activities placed in the studied area and the monitoring results give this away. On the other hand, there are other parameters that demand deeper researches, since they occur at concentrations higher than expected. For these latter parameters are related, as possible, the activities more likely of being contributing for its presence with concentrations above the allowable level. It is not possible to evaluate the origin of the anomalous concentrations for barium, lead and mercury.

Abstract:
The Petrobras Capixaba North Terminal - TNC is located in the state of Espirito Santo, in Brazil and is being built to receive the heavy and high viscosity oil produced onshore in the Fazenda Alegre field. This oil shall be heated prior to be pumped into the pipelines and it will be exported through a monobuoy and a tanker system. The two export pipelines are being laid to connect the onshore Terminal to a subsea PLEM to be installed under the monobuoy. The pipelines and PLEM were designed to operate with oil containing H2S in cyclic high temperature. This paper addresses the special concerns defined by the design activity to cope with the TNC operation conditions. It also focuses the modifications imposed to the installation process to fulfill the design and operation requirements.
