Xakaza, Mzuzile Mduduzi. "Power relations in landscape photographs by David Goldblatt and Santu Mofokeng." University of the Western Cape, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/4846.

Full text
Abstract:
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD
How far can landscape photographic images allow us to interrogate the extent to which collective socio-political, cultural and economic aspirations of marginalised South Africans have, or have not, been achieved since the dawn of democracy in 1994? In thinking about such aspirations, I posit that the victims of colonialism and the Apartheid system had expectations of living in a free, non-racial South Africa where equality would be realised in political, social, cultural and economic spheres. However, I use landscape as the basis for determining the extent to which such aspirations might or might not have been achieved within the context of post-Apartheid South Africa. What role can the work of David Goldblatt (born 1930) and Santu Mofokeng (born 1956) play in facilitating our ability to read a post-Apartheid diagnosis regarding this question? These issues are the primary focus of this thesis, and connect to a range of other questions. For instance, what methodological approaches do these practitioners employ in framing their photographed landscape scenes, be they populated or depopulated? Why is landscape in the centre of this thesis, and why are these practitioners considered relevant in the context of this study irrespective of their disparate racial and cultural backgrounds? The main body of the thesis traces these photographers’ individual methodological approaches, distinguishing them from predominant modes associated with the Afrapix Collective (1982-1992) and the later Bang-Bang Club (1990-1994). It locates them within the context of ‘struggle photography’ with which the Afrapix members and the Bang-Bang Club were primarily concerned. The Bang-Bang Club in particular had a preoccupation with the framing of violent scenes that ensued in the South African political arena during the early 1990s, leading up to the national democratic elections in 1994. My argument centres on what I consider the main element that distinguishes the practitioners in question from the Afrapix and the Bang-Bang Club – the everyday. I explore how specific examples of Goldblatt’s and Mofokeng’s focus on the everyday contribute to an articulation of the role of landscape as a medium of social critique. Instead of framing sensationalist and newsworthy episodes of violent political strife within pre-1994 South Africa, Goldblatt’s long career traces the underlying causes of the social injustices and resultant power contestations while Mofokeng, who was also a member of Afrapix, looks at what I term the spiritual or ethereal elements within landscape. It is this subtlety in their approach that sets them apart from their counterparts as they use landscape as a kind of proverbial text in which we can ‘read’ human actions over time. Thus time and space are inevitably significant in the study of these photographers’ oeuvre. But what do all these elements have to do with the challenging question of land in South Africa? What do they have to do with the construction of the South African landscape? What is the role of the camera in that construction? Using photographic images as important tools, I place the land issue, especially as it is mediated through landscape construction, at the centre of my interrogation of power relations in Apartheid and post-Apartheid South Africa.

Thom, J. F. "Embodied encounters : a performative, material reading of selected contemporary artworks by Santu Mofokeng, El Anatsui, Willem Boshoff and Johan Thom." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2014. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1437079/.

Abstract:
This dissertation is underpinned by two related materialist positions. Firstly, following in the analyses of Darwin (1871/ 2004, 1859/ 2009), Barash (2012), Miller (2001), Dunbar (1999, 2009), Donald (2009), and Grosz (2008, 2011) artworks are understood as being the material embodiment of context-specific ideals of beauty. That is to say artworks fulfil a performative, evolutionary function, one that is responsive to the corporeality of the body and the cultural and artistic values at stake in the specific material context to which that body belongs. Secondly, my body is not something I have but, rather, I am this body. However, following material readings by Barad (2007, 2009), Butler (1990, 1993), Foucault (1967), Deleuze and Guattari (1980/ 2004) and West-Eberhard (2003), like the artwork the body is also understood to be a socio-culturally, economic and politically constituted entity: the corporeal body does not exist pure and independently from the values of discourse and culture, for the latter is always already materially inscribed in it. Accordingly neither bodies nor the artworks they encounter are postulated as isolated ‘objects’ but, rather, are understood as being relationally founded material phenomena that weave in and out of one another even as they (re)configure historically specific boundaries between them and the world they inhabit. In this dissertation I apply this performative, materialist approach and the methodology implicit therein to the interpretation of selected contemporary artist’s works including ‘The Black Photo Album/ Look at Me 1890 - 1950’ (1997) by Santu Mofokeng, ‘Man’s Cloth’ (1998-2001) by El Anatsui, ‘The Blind Alphabet’ (1991 – ongoing) by Willem Boshoff, and ‘Every Sentence draws blood’ (2012) by Johan Thom. Throughout the dissertation I will show how a performative, material reading provides for an interpretive framework constituted as much by the form, subject matter and context of the artwork, as by the viewer’s embodied experience thereof. To this effect I have employed two voices throughout the text: a first-person account of specific moments in my life that have particular relevance to my meaningful encounter with - and interpretation of - specific artworks; and secondly, a questioning, analytic voice that attempts to map theoretically the deeply nuanced performative interrelationship between the material bonds and boundaries at stake in therein.

Belluigi, Dina Zoe. "Broken vessels : the im-possibility of the art of remembrance and re-collection in the work of Anselm Kiefer, Christian Boltanski, William Kentridge and Santu Mofokeng." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002191.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is structured around investigating the philosophical and aesthetic problematics, politics, and possibilities of representing the past for the purposes of demythifying the present as well as commemorating the losses of history, as explored in the artworks of Anselm Kiefer, Christian Boltanski, William Kentridge and Santu Mofokeng. The first chapter begins with Theodor Adorno’s philosophical understanding of myth and history: how he is influenced by and then develops Karl Marx’s critique of society, Sigmund Freud’s critique of reason and its subject, and particularly Walter Benjamin’s ideas of history as catastrophe, the role of the historian and his messianic materialism. The second section looks at Theodor Adorno’s dialectic of art and society: immanent criticism in aesthetic practice, mimesis, and the shift in conceptions of allegory from Walter Benjamin’s understanding to that of Jacques Derrida. The last section of the chapter looks at Jacques Derrida’s poststructuralist theories against boundary-fixing, within that the ethical relation to the ‘other’ and the theorist/artist as psychic exile. The second chapter deals with the politics of remembrance and representation — beginning with Theodor Adorno’s historic interpretation of the Mosaic law against the making of images and Jean-Francois Lyotard on the im-possibility of representing the unrepresentable. The chapter is divided in two parts between the post-Holocaust European artists Anselm Kiefer and Christian Boltanski, and the post-apartheid South African artists William Kentridge and Santu Mofokeng. It explores, within these artists’ specific contexts, their formal and philosophical approaches to myth and history, and the problematics of image-making, representing the unrepresentable, and commemorating the immemorial. The thesis concludes by considering different conceptions of melancholia as they relate to these artists: the Freudian psychoanalytic approach, Benjamin’s notions of the artist-genius, and Julia Kristeva’s Lacanian reading of the humanist melancholic, concluding with the mythic-historical Kaballist notion of melancholia as the historical burden or responsibility to commemorate loss.

Abstract:
The Santa Angelica Massif (CISA), located in the southern Espírito Santo state, is the G5 suite more important pluton (Araçuaí Orogen post-collisional stage), and is constituted by leucocratic and melanocratic rocks in a magma mingling zone. This pluton intruded the rocks of G1 suite (Araçuaí Orogen pre-collisional stage) and the Paraiba do Sul Complex. The processes of physical and chemical dynamic of mafic and felsic magmatism of the CISA and the gneiss margin (G1 suit) is studied herein, considering the structural features. In order to do this, fieldwork, petrographic microscopic study, microprobe analysis and geochemical analyses were realized. The interpretation of this data resulted in the model tectono-magmatic in which are discussed the two main deformation phases associated the G1 suites rocks and how they influenced the process of intrusion and shaping the CISA from regional shear zones. Were also shown the parcial melting process the gneiss margin (G1 suite) (genesis the G5s syenogranite and syenogranite more young) as well as the magmatic differentiation process (fractional crystallization) involving the two gabbroics nucleus of the G5 suite (genesis of other CISAs rocks) and the most important aspects of the magma mingling zone.

This study aimed to know the residents of Santo Antão district perception in relation to the health interface environment. It was based on qualitative research, and 14 interviews realized from October to November 2016. Theoretic analysis was used where four categories emerged, to known: waste treatment centers and prisons: health and environmental reflectivity in the perception of the community of Santo Antão; The ambience and reflectivity in your health, in the context of Santo Antão community; Public Health and the use of medicinal plants as possible approach; The natural environment, the countryside as a promoting of the quality of life in the of Santo Antão community. It is concluded that the sanitation almost nonexistent, the poor roads, the work and the public transport which does not meet the local demand, the difficulties of access to specialized health treatment, point out how low the level of social development of the region, resulting in impacts on health. Endogenous actions of the location as: occupational activities, meals with products without use of pesticides, use of medicinal plants are evidence of the concern with the health through self-care; adding to the tranquility, closeness with nature and feelings of identity with the region indicate that the processes related both to health as the diseases are a result in large part of interactions between individuals and your ambience.

The present thesis proposes a reflection about saint Antonio de Sant Anna Galvão, the first Brazilian to be canonized a saint by the Catholic Church. Therefore, the objective was to study and analyze how he became a saint and how historical, cultural and social elements contributed to make him into a different person to the eyes of thousands of devotees in the country. Friar Galvão was born in Guaratinguetá, São Paulo state, in 1739 and died in São Paulo city on December 23rd, 1822. The house in which he was born and lived with his family in his hometown works as a museum and memorial, and the Luz Monastery in São Paulo city is also a place of memory when we think of this man. It is also the place where he was buried. The specific objectives, therefore, were based on getting to know better what Friar Galvão s memories are made of, and based on these memories how social subjects, patrimony and individuals collaborate to build a canonic process that made him into a saint for the Catholic Church. The paper is justified by the need to understand how a canonization process is built historically. As it crosses the sacred universe, it is a matter that concerns the social life. Brazilian reality is diverse in its religions and as such deserved a study of the theme as it concerns symbolic, material and historical practices of the life of the human being. The methodological aspects were first based on a bibliographic study about the spoken history, memory, the press, images, objects and collections, patrimony, mediation and religiousness. Secondly, the research sources were surveyed: newspaper and magazine articles, electronic sources, photographs, recorded interviews with devotees and individuals that helped turn him into a saint. Thirdly, photographic registries were made to better understand the reality that surrounded him and to analyze critically the places of memory and of the patrimony. The first chapter deals with how the press covered the events of canonization and beatification. The second one recreates the discussion about miracle-receivers who contributed directly with their experiences to turn him into a saint. The third chapter talks about the miracle-receivers, devotees who visit the memory places related to Friar Galvão after his canonization and tell their experiences of faith and miracle with their devotion saint. The fourth chapter analyzes critically the patrimony and the objects related to the memory of Antonio Galvão de França. The premises for this paper were that Friar Galvão did not become a saint only because it was ordered by the Pope, but for being an individual who produced memories, and these memories, together with other individuals, is what built the image of a sanctified man. The research moved on to understanding that turning Friar Galvão into a saint depended on a patrimony built to reinforce his sanctity fame and especially on an important participation of groups religious, family, devotees groups that were responsible to make him part of the catholic group of saints. It was concluded that the process which made him occupy catholic altars is a historical development which implied in analyzes of disputes and decisions, in the active participation of social subjects and individuals who were parts of a whole that wants to show to everybody Friar Galvão as a Brazilian saint and as someone who is dear to followers all over Brazil

Tweet, Justin S., Vincent L. Santucci, Kenneth Convery, Jonathan Hoffman, and Laura Kirn. Channel Islands National Park: Paleontological resource inventory (public version). National Park Service, September 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/nrr-2278664.

Full text
Abstract:
Channel Island National Park (CHIS), incorporating five islands off the coast of southern California (Anacapa Island, San Miguel Island, Santa Barbara Island, Santa Cruz Island, and Santa Rosa Island), has an outstanding paleontological record. The park has significant fossils dating from the Late Cretaceous to the Holocene, representing organisms of the sea, the land, and the air. Highlights include: the famous pygmy mammoths that inhabited the conjoined northern islands during the late Pleistocene; the best fossil avifauna of any National Park Service (NPS) unit; intertwined paleontological and cultural records extending into the latest Pleistocene, including Arlington Man, the oldest well-dated human known from North America; calichified “fossil forests”; records of Miocene desmostylians and sirenians, unusual sea mammals; abundant Pleistocene mollusks illustrating changes in sea level and ocean temperature; one of the most thoroughly studied records of microfossils in the NPS; and type specimens for 23 fossil taxa. Paleontological research on the islands of CHIS began in the second half of the 19th century. The first discovery of a mammoth specimen was reported in 1873. Research can be divided into four periods: 1) the few early reports from the 19th century; 2) a sustained burst of activity in the 1920s and 1930s; 3) a second burst from the 1950s into the 1970s; and 4) the modern period of activity, symbolically opened with the 1994 discovery of a nearly complete pygmy mammoth skeleton on Santa Rosa Island. The work associated with this paleontological resource inventory may be considered the beginning of a fifth period. Fossils were specifically mentioned in the 1938 proclamation establishing what was then Channel Islands National Monument, making CHIS one of 18 NPS areas for which paleontological resources are referenced in the enabling legislation. Each of the five islands of CHIS has distinct paleontological and geological records, each has some kind of fossil resources, and almost all of the sedimentary formations on the islands are fossiliferous within CHIS. Anacapa Island and Santa Barbara Island, the two smallest islands, are primarily composed of Miocene volcanic rocks interfingered with small quantities of sedimentary rock and covered with a veneer of Quaternary sediments. Santa Barbara stands apart from Anacapa because it was never part of Santarosae, the landmass that existed at times in the Pleistocene when sea level was low enough that the four northern islands were connected. San Miguel Island, Santa Cruz Island, and Santa Rosa Island have more complex geologic histories. Of these three islands, San Miguel Island has relatively simple geologic structure and few formations. Santa Cruz Island has the most varied geology of the islands, as well as the longest rock record exposed at the surface, beginning with Jurassic metamorphic and intrusive igneous rocks. The Channel Islands have been uplifted and faulted in a complex 20-million-year-long geologic episode tied to the collision of the North American and Pacific Places, the initiation of the San Andreas fault system, and the 90° clockwise rotation of the Transverse Ranges, of which the northern Channel Islands are the westernmost part. Widespread volcanic activity from about 19 to 14 million years ago is evidenced by the igneous rocks found on each island.
