The article deals with the history and etymology of the basic means of transport on snow and ice in Slavonic languages – sledge, ski and skate. The oldest of these means is the sledge. The word for it (Proto-Slavonic *sani, *saně) is attested in all Slavonic languages and even expanded into some surrounding languages; its etymology, however, remains unclear.
