Abstract:
AbstractThis article examines the question of how architects in São Paulo during the 1950s and 1960s addressed the political nature of their work, and more specifically the connections between their practice and the lives and politics of the urban poor in the context of a rapidly expanding metropolis of the Global South. More specifically, it assesses how they elaborated strategies to articulate the semiotic and material practices of Brutalism and the political repertoire of national developmentalism, initially in its democratic and later in its authoritarian form. The article argues that these architects deployed two semio-material strategies to operationalize the articulation between that political repertoire and the field of architecture: metaphorical indexicality and the impetus for the industrialization of construction. The image of the urban poor reinforced by that political repertoire was marked by a severe distance from their empirical life experiences, which deeply affected the practices of design and construction that progressive architects advanced.

Abstract:
Abstract From the late 1970s until the early 1990s, the issue of the right to housing in São Paulo’s peripheral neighborhoods was pursued side by side with a questioning of the political character of design and construction techniques and an attempt to reframe the construction site as a space of cooperation and political education. This article addresses how this articulation between architects and urban social movements led to an innovation of organizational practices within those movements, transformations in the field of architecture, and the local emergence of the idea of the “right to architecture.”

Abstract:
Abstract. This paper describes the digital survey activities carried out in Brazil, in the state of São Paulo, in order to document historical architectures and his vernacular features. After introducing the researches performed in Brazil in the last years, the Brazilian state-of-art of architecture is summarised, so that it is possible to understand the complexities and the referential typological and cultural models. Typical Paulistano vernacular building techniques are thereafter deepened, before outlining the case-study of the Jesuit mission of Carapicuiba, one of the few rammed earths building in existence in São Paulo. Quick digital survey techniques, like aerial photogrammetry, make possible for architects and scholars to rapidly record the building’s morphology and state of preservation, for future cultural heritage conservation. Research findings permitted to update the settlement’s survey data, specifically the ones linked to surfaces, colors, and materials.

Abstract:
Abstract Cannibalism is one of the most recognisable taboos of the West and a benchmark with which a supposedly civilised world has traditionally sought to differentiate itself from the radically “other” of the hinterlands. As such, cannibalism has made its way both into the vocabulary of the West’s pseudo-ethnographic self-reflection (e.g. Freud) and the imaginary of its literary culture (e.g. Grimm). A less-well-known strain in this narrative uses cannibalism as a critical postcolonial metaphor. In 1928, the Brazilian poet and agitator Oswald de Andrade published a short text entitled “Anthropophagic Manifesto.” The aim of the manifesto was to distance an emerging Brazilian modernism from the European ideals that the São Paulo bourgeoisie uncritically embraced, and to synthesise more avant-garde ideas with aspects from the cultures of the indigenous Amazonian peoples into a truly national cultural movement. This essay draws on various aspects of the anthropophagic movement and seeks to understand, whether (and how) it influenced Brazilian urban planning and architecture, and especially if it is detectable in the ways in which architects Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer designed and executed the legal and political institutions in Brasília, the country’s iconic federal capital. The ana-lysis, however, identifies a colonialist inclination in Costa and Niemeyer’s ideological debt to Le Corbusier. Instead, the radical potential of anthropophagic architecture is developed with reference to the less-known São Paulo architect and polymath Flávio de Carvalho whose aesthetic politics provide parallels with contemporary radical politics, as well. The essay suggests that such a notion of politics would be akin to a radical anti-instrumentalism that I have elsewhere, following Georges Bataille and Maurice Blanchot, called a “politics of the impossible.”

Abstract:
Nowadays, references to childhood can be easily perceived in workplace, especially in companies that take as a model the innovative, relaxed offices in Silicon Valley, California (USA). Both the architecture and the decoration of these workplaces suggest new senses, different from those formed in traditional offices. The employees of these companies, in turn, construct imaginary representations about the office - and, consequently, about the company - using all this shown material, in addition to their own experiences, memories, sensations and affections. In these communicational interactions, the highlight is the non-verbal language (Ferrara, 2001), where that childhood symbolic objects produce senses (Orlandi, 2012), suggest interpretations (Santaella, 2008) and create emotional bonds (Silva, 2012) in everyday work life. Studying these relationships that involve all the human senses in the communication process within organizations is the main theme in this article. As the objective of this research, we seek to understand how these organizational discourses are constructed in order to involve employees emotionally using their own experiences, recovered by childhood symbolic objects. Summing up: how are these shown discourses, involving childhood memories, in the work routine, materialized? As corpus of our research, we chose to observe and analyze the workplace of three multinationals from technology sector, represented by their Brazilian offices: Google-Belo Horizonte, in Minas Gerais, OLX-Rio de Janeiro and LinkedIn-São Paulo. The material for analysis was collected from images available on the corporate websites of these companies and on the websites of the architecture firms responsible for the architectural projects created for these offices. Collected data as well as its organization and analysis were based on Lucrécia Ferrara's proposal of reading non verbal messages, contextualizing in time and space each researched places, searching for "estrangement" - non-homogeneous elements or situations - and find out the "dominant" - the conflicting element in the observed environment (Ferrara, 2001). The non-verbal reading are based on the memories recovered not only by the act of seeing something, but also for hearing, smell, taste and touch. And these memories can be used to create new sensations and emotions - positive ones - for new perceptions of the corporate 'world'. In the three companies researched, which hired architects and decorators to transform the work space according to the companies' world headquarters guidelines, we found the non-homogeneous in the office organization itself. In this innovative interior, the presence of childhood symbols appear as dominant. This is the case of the Google-Belo Horizons popcorn cart, the giant slide at OLX-Rio de Janeiro and elements such as a swing at LinkedIn-São Paulo. We understand that employees' perceptions of childhood symbols refer to distant and pleasurable memories, brought by remembrance to other contexts and situations. And these memories and feelings are activated not only by the sight of these objects, but also by smell, taste - like as the popcorn cart - and by touch - as in the act of slipping or rocking. It is essential to highlight that mental and symbolic representations have an emotional charge brought about by specific moments, lived in certain contexts and recovered by memory through associations by similarity. This reading of the non-verbal material transfers the happy memories of employees to the workplace, to the company, and can contribute to the formation of meanings of pleasure and well-being for corporate world. The bridge between employees and the organization, for this image formation, is the symbolic material.

Abstract:
This research examines how public housing design has been developed to attend the low income population in Sao Paulo, Brazil and how changes in the existing design affect the quality of the dwellings and energy consumption. The hypothesis of this research is that energy efficient architecture concepts applied to the current design practices of public housing in Sao Paulo significantly reduce energy consumption in buildings. In this study, computer simulation is used to evaluate current energy performance of public housing buildings and to simulate the integration of new energy saving features into the current design to assess buildings’ performance. The findings show that energy consumption can be reduced by as much as 54 percent in doing so. This study highlights the numerous opportunities for architects to influence the quality of the design being produced for the less fortunate population in public housing sector in Sao Paulo. This also positively impacts comfort conditions within buildings and most importantly, reduce energy consumption.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper presents the evaluation of the conservation of the Monument to Ramos de Azevedo through a study of the ultrasound pulse velocity. The Monument to Ramos de Azevedo is of great importance for the history of the city of São Paulo (Brazil), because it honors the architect who was fundamental in the architectural and social development of the city. This monument was built with Itaquera Granite, a stone widely used in the cultural heritage of the city, which is more specifically called biotite monzogranite. The equipment used was the V-Meter Mark III and only P waves were used with 54 kHz transducers. Several measurements were taken on the monument and on fresh stone, and the results were compared. Results showed that the stone is in good condition even after changing locations twice because the values are very close to those of the fresh sample. The low values were attributed to internal discontinuities or biotite enclaves, the latter being very common in the Itaquera Granite.

This paper presents some architectural housing projects designed by architects in different parts of the world, considering concepts originated from the virtuality domain. Some designers propose the beginning of an interaction between the user and its dwelling that attempts to overcome the functionalist slant of so-called residential automation. After examining different approaches and proposals, ten points are presented as items for an agenda of debates. Abstract:
In São Paulo during the 1950s, a number of architectural projects for private residences had a significant impact on discussions concerning the relationship between architecture and the city within the context of industrial modernization and developmentism. The work of Vilanova Artigas (1915-1985) not only assembled the greatest number of theories on potential spatial and architectural configuration in this emerging peripheral metropolis but, from that moment onward, also had a permanent impact on Brazilian architecture. This was a period of expansive growth in the occupation and urbanization of Brazilian industrial cities and the problems thrown up by Vilanova Artigas’s architecture determined the endurance of architectural patterns which focused on a wide range of urbanity issues related to buildings which could not be controlled or changed by land occupations of that time. The aim of this work is to analyze the development of architectural and spatial patterns, which we believe, are at the root of the constructive experimentations in homes projected by Vilanova Artigas. Through his works, the architect was able to give shape to the social contradictions of the conservative modernization of South America’s greatest metropolis, São Paulo. The aim of this paper is to propose new topics which can assist the theorization of the difficult relationship between Brazilian architecture and the accelerated development of Brazil’s large cities. Brazil is currently undergoing a period of great urban transformations in the wake of the recent public and private investment in cities. Which local conceptions of architecture will counteract the processes of territorial degradation, a product of the aggression of economic movements driven by private conceptions of the collective space?

Abstract:
This dissertation presents the biography of Arnaldo Martino. From the chronological presentation of part of his projects, this study intends to disclose his work by a brief contextualization and insert the architect in the recent history of the architecture of São Paulo. Presenting his main forms of professional practices at his office, as a university professor and at the Institute of Brazilian Architects- IAB, it will be noticed that the relations of these different practices have a point in common: the body of work of the architect. Based ona brief historical overview of the program for urban housing in Sao Paulo, thirteen residences and its deployment projects designed by the architect between 1965 and 2003, built in Sao Paulo and the allotment Patrimônio do Carmo will be detail studied. Based on this analysis some features of his work, changes and continuities in his projects synthesis could be detected. Finally, this study will propose a brief investigation and evaluation of the possible reasons why this vast production of unquestionable quality still remains unveiled. As a first study on Arnaldo Martino and his work, most sources are primaries, generated from the digitization of his private collection. The homes selected for analysis were used as illustrations for this study or were redrawn by computer aided design software (CAD). The houses were also visited and as a result a current iconographic survey was produced. Therefore this study is intended to reduce the gap in the historiography of modern architecture in São Paulo, and of the School of Architecture of the University of São Paulo (FAU-USP), and reveal an architect with an important body of work in this period, which contributed greatly to the architecture to its construction methods as well as an autonomous subject.

Abstract:
This work proposed, is a search to reinforce the research about Paulista´s Architecture from a period of time, not quite studied, introducing for contemporaneous criticism, the discussion of architects that the Architectonical production had a certain relevance in the decades of 70´s and 80´s, but stayed apart of Architecture´s Icons at the mentioned period. This critical analysis about Brazilian Architectonical Production had as it predominant course of discussion, the works and projects proposed by the called Modern Movement or The Brazilian Modern Architecture. To enrich the repertory about the Brazilian Architecture, more specifi cally, Paulista´s Architecture, in a period of transition of the proposed paradigm at that time, the intention was to rescue the History of Paulista´s Architecture, not allowing to disappear at a dusty deposit, important archives for the comprehension of determined periods of our architecture. With the tabulation and systematization of the fi les of the projects and the constructed buildings by the architect Joaquim Barretto, known as Barretinho, graduated at F.A.U. Abstract:
This research focus on the action of militant architects and urban planners in what regards slum upgrading processes in favelas from the 60\'s to the 10\'s decades. In order to do so, we resort to concrete cases of slum upgrading experiences in favelas that counted upon the participation of theses subjects in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, as well as in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro. We aimed at regarding this field of action of architects and urban planners focusing on the professionals that have been proposing interventions that seek to be more just, more integrated, and more emancipated in favelas. This work intends to recognize the background of these architects - understood as political subjects herein - but also, to approach a retrospective about their experiences that usually reveal to be pionneer in their professional field. It also aims at analyising the limits and advances of their militant action. We have chosen professionals that stand out in their field of action, and whose experiences stress the boundaries of ethics, aesthetics and techinique. In the end, the results of their experiences are rare, generally frustrating, but at the same time, surely inspiring. We have built our analysis upon their oral information and their own relfections over their experience, and, despite the different contexts, we have come to common points in terms of methods, practice and inteverntions, that we have have designated as militant practices in slum upgranding. Through this research, we present a mapping of possible references, but also a questioning over the role of architects in territories of conflicts.

Essa cidade de tijolos e alinhada à estética do Ecletismo, que iniciou mudanças e trans-- formações impostas pelo novo regime político, permaneceu por poucas décadas, logo cedendo lugar a outra mais espalhada e verticalizada e de concreto armado que compõe a macro metrópole que conhecemos hoje.<br>This is a study on the architectural and urban transformations in São Paulo du-- ring the years of consolidation of the Republic up to the beginning of World War I, based on the official record of building application permits addressed to the local government entities by professionals who were active during the 1906 to 1915 period. This contingent of architects, engineers and builders, actively participated in pro-- ducing material that transformed a colonial provincial town into an eclectic metropolis. Most of them were linked to the Escritório Técnico de Ramos de Azevedo and be-- came involved in issues of education and professional organisation. The research is founded on processing the information contained in the Série Obras Particulares, a set of documents found in the Arquivo Histórico de São Paulo, and seeks to convey analytical and assessment elements of a unique architectural produc-- tion, which coincides with our Cultural Heritage, of which little remains in the current metropolis. This town made of bricks and aligned to the aesthetics of Eclecticism, which be-- gan changes and transformations imposed by the new political regime, lasted a few de-- cades only, quickly giving way to a more widespread and vertical and made of reinforced concrete which constitutes the macro--metropolis we know today.

Abstract:
If the extensive production is not equivalent to his reputation in the historiography of the Brazilian architecture, the massive presence of his buildings in the city, in particular in the downtown area, indicated that his contribution to the construction of São Paulo and to the affirmation of a certain image of modernity deserved more attention. This work traces the trajectory of Pilon and his role as an architect in São Paulo between 1930 and 1960. Without intending to draw an intellectual biography or to develop a monograph, the research retrieves the experience of this French architect in the tropics and from it investigates the contribution of foreign architects to build the city, tracing the formation of the architectural field in Brazil, the history of São Paulo and its architecture in this period.

Discute-se também a atuação do engenheiro-arquiteto Bruno Simões Magro, útil para se entender a complexidade do tema da habitação econômica e como esse tipo de profissional, dito engenheiro arquiteto, atuou na questão da habitação popular<br>With the intention of contributing towards filling the historical gap existent in our knowledge of the activities of engineers and architects in the field of the construction, a discussion on popular housing in engineering periodicals and in publications edited in São Paulo between 1916 and 1931 is resuscitated. With this aim, the treatment given to the subject of popular housing between the I Contest for projects of Cost-Saving Proletarian Housing, of 1916, and the I Housing Congress, accomplished in the beginning of 1931, were taken as a basis. These two events are moments in which engineers and architects had important discussions around a proposal of cost-saving housing. Amongst the subjects discussed, space innovations are discussed as influenced by questions of comfort, hygiene and economy, side by side with technological discussion that permeates the subjects of rationalization of construction materials, construction techniques and urbanization. In addition, the performance of the engineer-architect Bruno Simões Magro is useful to understand the complexity of the theme of the low-cost housing, and how this type of professional, known as engineer-architect, acted in questioning of popular housing

Abstract:
Por fim, o terceiro capítulo é uma tentativa de aproximação das interlocuções projetuais entre os arquitetos locais através da análise de alguns dos concursos de arquitetura realizados em São Paulo no período e que encontraram eco nas revistas de arquitetura locais.<br>This work intends to discuss the unity and plurality of the architectonic environment of São Paulo, through their social networks, professional spaces and critical movements, using as primary source some specialized magazines, published in the city between 1945 and 1965. The study will investigate the relationship between an intellectual group - a parcel of architects working in São Paulo - and its manifestations, seeking to understand the particular space in which some of its professional ties, cultural and ideological exchanges, and projetual attitudes were developed. The first chapter seeks to outline the social networks of those architects, through the intersection of urban space, cultural, professional and academic institutions. The second chapter studies the local criticism - their intellectual approaches, disarticulations, fractures and dislocations - across their inner dialogues and their different looks launched on Brazilian contemporary architecture, especially the one produced in Rio de Janeiro. Finally, the third chapter aims to approach the projectual dialogues between the local architects through the analysis of some architectural competition held in São Paulo in the period and that found an echo in local architecture magazines.

Abstract:
Pilon, Heep, Korngold e Palanti: office buildings (1930-1960). Thesis, Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism, University of São Paulo, São Paulo, 2015. ABSTRACT The research on foreign architects (Jacques Pilon, Franz Heep, Lucjan Korngold and Giancarlo Palanti) contributions to the office buildings projects in the city of São Paulo, from 1930 to 1960, came from a methodological procedure. It used two main elements: the review of the recent historiography and the identification of works by crossing the information of new primary sources of FAUUSP Library Archives . The first chapter\'s objective is to understand the contribution of the office buildings to the verticalization center of São Paulo, through the identification of the pioneers architects and their works in comparison to the North American architecture, the specific contributions of those foreign architects during a large urban transformation and the technical challenges in the development process of reinforced concrete. The second chapter presents the contribution of foreign architects directly to the projects, identifying a morphology by analyzing the site plans and volumetry, the ground floor and access paths, circulation and installations, pavement type, structure and envelopment: mass, frames, grilles, louvers and curtain wall. The third chapter outlines the practice and professional relationships of these architects and their collaborators, foreigners or not, as well the design teaching at their offices and the relevance of the detail in the development and training of these team.

Abstract:
It objectives to analyze, based on original documentary sources, how it was included in government initiatives - state and local - to improve sanitary conditions of the city of Campinas/SP, between 1880 and 1934. It works with the hypothesis that, the measures taken by São Paulos government and by the municipality - in the late nineteenth century - under the republican regimes organization and to fight yellow fever epidemics, were based on the European principles of sanitarian urbanism, which were organized in sanitary and constructive legislation, providing input to practices related to housing hygiene and guiding Campinas building activity. Examines construction scenery in Campinas through the administrative procedure that authorized permits for housing edification, which was formalized in constructive legislation and organized in the municipality, identifying the protagonists in the conception and analysis of requirements and architectural projects. It verifies that the significant majority of the work was conducted by non-graduated constructors, without academic degree in traditional schools of engineering and architecture, however were licensed according to rules that established the professional regulation. It concludes that these municipal rules, taking into account state laws provisions and supporting the sanitary apparatus, was decisive to promote reforms and guidance for the construction of new private urban houses in Campinas/SP, when establishes obedience to aspect, solidity and hygiene technical determinations, mainly related to buildings waterproofing, insolation and ventilation.

Abstract:
Architects design spaces that offer perceptual cues, affordances, for our various effectivities. Lina Bo Bardi’s São Paulo Museum demonstrates how praxic and contemplative actions are interleaved—space is effective and affective. Navigation often extends beyond wayfinding to support ongoing behavior. Scripts set out the general rules for a particular kind of behavior, and may suggest places that a building must provide. Cognitive maps support wayfinding. Other maps in the brain represent sensory or motor patterns of activity. Juhani Pallasmaa’s reflections on The Thinking Hand lead into a view of how the brain mediates that thinking, modeling hand–eye coordination at two levels. The first coordinates perceptual and motor schemas. The body schema is an adaptable collage of perceptual and motor skills. The second coordinates the ventral “what” pathway that can support planning of actions, and the dorsal “how” pathway that links affordance-related details to motor control. A complementary challenge is understanding how schemas in the head relate to social schemas. Finally, the chapter compares the cognitive challenges in designing a building and in developing a computational brain model of cognitive processes.

Abstract:
Although the desirability for Italian princes and those who emulated their social practices to construct rooms specifically dedicated to the performance of music was specified by Paolo Cortesi in his treatise De cardinalatu at the beginning of the sixteenth century, the identification of these dedicated spaces and in particular of the repertories performed within them is fraught with difficulty. Beginning with Isabella d'Este's various studioli, this chapter considers what can be reconstructed about the provision of such rooms within the ducal palace in Mantua. In so doing, it draws upon inventories, archival documents and the iconography of a number of decorative schemes, finishing with the work of the architect Giovan Battista Bertani, to suggest what can be determined about the shape and internal disposition of the rooms themselves.

Abstract:
Abstract: This article looks into Le Corbusier’s urban proposal for the City of São Paulo, as formulated during his journey to South America in 1929. It highlights the relationship between Architecture and Landscape exposed by Le Corbusier’s plan. This paper sets out to investigate the analysis that the innovative Swiss architect performed of the geography and morphology of São Paulo. It contrasts to the works and plans carried out by technicians and engineers at that time. In order to explain how Le Corbusier’s treatment of nature and landscape differs from them, we study the extent to which Le Corbusier’s plans show design approaches, which were unusual in terms of Western History and Memory. He also looks into the relationship between Le Corbusier’s work, on the one hand, and new technological elements and changes in the visual culture at that time, on the other hand, thus seeking to highlight certain obscure spots within Le Corbusier’s work. This study aims at bringing forward some speculations and methods present in the work of Le Corbusier on cities. It deals with contradictory aspects in Le Corbusier’s work in order to deepen our understanding of contemporary urban problems. Abstract:
In recent years much has been written and exhibited regarding Lina Bo Bardi, the Italian/Brazilian architect (1914-1992). This paper aims to look at the phenomenon of cultural displacement and the dissemination of her design thinking as a major female figure in a male dominated profession. This investigation is distinguished from others in that it addresses the importance of regional and cultural influences that formed Lina’s design philosophy in her early years in Italy. Cultural displacement has long played a significant role in the creative process for artists. Often major innovators in literature are immigrants as elements of strangeness, distance, and alienation all contribute to their creativity. The premise is that critical distance is paramount for reflection as a change of context unfolds unforeseen possibilities. Displacement was a consistent element throughout the trajectory of Lina’s architectural career as she moved from Rome to Milan, from Milan to Sao Paolo from Sao Paolo to Bahia and back to Sao Paolo. Viewing this form of detachment and dislocation permits insight into her career and body of work as displacement mediates the paradoxical relationship between time and space. The paper will examine three distinct periods in her career. The first period is set in Rome, where she assimilated the city, showed artistic aptitude and spent her university years studying under Piacentiniand Giovannoni. The second period is set in Milan, where she developed impressive editorial and layout skills in publications work with Gio Ponti and BrunoZevi. and was influenced by Antonio Gramsci’s writings. The third is set in Brazil, where she builds and evolves as an architect via what she absorbed in Rome, wrote in Milan, and finally realized in Brazil. After Italy’s collapse in WWII Lina writes, draws, edits, critiques the plight of the Italians in need of better housing and circumstances. She leaves Milan with her new husband, PM Bardi (a prominent journalist, art critic) for Brazil. In Sao Paolo she absorbs the optimism and positive direction of Brazil. Her early design work in Brazil echoes European modernism, but when she travels to Bahia and becomes aware of the social conditions, she draws from her Italian experiences of and ideas of transforming lives through craft. Her architectural projects become directly responsive to the culture of Bahia and the politics of poverty. Lina’s design thinking evolves and parallels George Kubler’s study, The Shape of Time, and the history of man-made objects by bridging the divide between art and material culture.

E-mail: ander.caballero@ehu.eus Keywords (3-5): Eusa; Pamplona; Ensanche; Sitte; Propileos. Conference topics: City transformations. It is inevitable to be disappointed when we consciously compare today’s city with yesterday’s. Territorial occupancy was an arduous task which confronted man and nature. It was a collective act, the cultural manifestation of a society that aspired to artistically represent itself in the cities it built, both in buildings and public spaces. The city of the past, so conceived, successfully raised through time, and even today we can appreciate, in the human affection it brings about, the plastic value of its buildings and the ambient quality of its public spaces. Currently the contemporary city is just incapable of meeting a profound spiritual demand if it does not pursues a practical goal. In the Ensanche, one of its most renowned examples, the idea of the city imposes a restriction to the artistic or monumental value of the historic city in favour of a technical efficiency that facilitates the economic and administrative management of the new city. The unidentified reticular mesh so characteristic of the urban morphology of the Ensanche evinces the distortion of the hippodamian model which in past ages and also throughout time probed its validity to provide magnificent examples of cities thought and built also from artistic principles. In the late example of the 2nd Ensanche of Pamplona, we attend to the solitary labour of an architect such as Victor Eusa Razquin, who knew how to transform with his buildings the “technical” uniformity of the Ensanche by transforming, qualifying and enriching it with the incrustation of architectural episodes of elevated artistic value.
