Abstract:
La tesi si propone di analizzare il tema della reclusione in alcune opere selezionate di Goliarda Sapienza. Per quanto riguarda l'esperienza fisica della reclusione, vengono presi in analisi principalmente "L'Università di Rebibbia" e "Le certezze del dubbio"; per affrontare la questione della reclusione come sofferenza psichica, invece, si procede con una trattazione dei testi autobiografici e della raccolta di racconti "Destino coatto". Entrambe le sezioni d'indagine risultano affiancate dall'analisi parallela dei "Taccuini" editi, scritti in cui si manifesta ancor più liberamente il pensiero dell'autrice. In particolare, la tesi si prefigge di dimostrare come la scrittrice, in modo apparentemente paradossale, riesca a portare alla luce forme inedite di libertà a partire dall'esperienza personale del carcere e della malattia psichiatrica. La scrittura di Sapienza, così, dà voce a un pensiero innovativo e singolare, che non teme le contraddizioni e riflette continuamente su se stesso, superando barriere e convenzioni.

Abstract:
In this thesis I propose a queer reading of the works of three contemporary Italian women writers, Dacia Maraini (1936—), Goliarda Sapienza (1924-1996) and Elsa Morante (1912- 1985), published between the 1970s and 1980s. This timeframe coincides with the height of the Italian pensiero della differenza sessuale, emphasising the socially constructed nature of ‘woman’ and advocating a new symbolic order, with a focus on the redefinition of female identity. Yet, the texts that I examine for my study are not, or not just, feminist manifestoes. Despite sharing many feminist concerns, they also go beyond the dominant theoretical paradigms of the day and venture a step further into the exploration of alternative discourses that challenge taken-for-granted relations between biological sex, gender and sexual desire as fixed patterns for identity formation, thereby problematising the notion of ‘identity’ itself. As such, they appear in tune with more recent formulations arising from a new field of critical theory first elaborated in the North-American context in the early 1990s and now referred to as ‘queer theory’. Used as a framework for my analysis, queer theory will help us understand the critical attitude that Maraini, Sapienza and Morante upheld towards the cultural and philosophical positions of their time, while also suggesting new ways of (re)reading their works nowadays. My thesis will demonstrate that, despite not always sharing the same ideological agendas, these authors manifest a marked unease towards the binary logic implicit to the categories of ‘man’ and ‘woman’, positing these as cultural performances and espousing a queer distrust towards identitarian anchorings.

Abstract:
This paper focuses on Francesco Borromini's church Sant'Ivo alla Sapienza, and the relation between Solomonic symbolism and Hebrew linguistics to the structure of the church. Kabbalistic influence during the Renaissance is explored, as well as Borromini's intellectual involvement with the Jesuit scholar Athanasius Kircher. The Solomonic influence present within Borromini?s church is examined through the comparison of architectural features within Sant'Ivo, to the descriptions of the First Temple of Jerusalem described within the book of Kings. Within the book of Kings, there is a specific passage that becomes a clue into an arcane interpretation of Hebrew scripture known as Gematria. Through Gematria, the language of this scripture is thought of as something beyond a method of description; it becomes a cosmological framework by which to interpret the Solomonic meaning of Sant'Ivo alla Sapienza.

In questo lavoro si affronta la vita e l’opera di Sapienza a partire dagli inediti d’archivio, in particolare documenti, lettere e una prima versione del romanzo Lettera aperta (Garzanti 1967). La ricerca in diversi Fondi italiani di autori, critici e case editrici ha permesso di ricontestualizzare il corpus rovesciando alcuni ‘luoghi comuni d’autore’, rinnovando l’interpretazione dello stesso. Articolata in tre capitoli, la tesi rilegge il piano biografico alla luce di alcuni materiali di contesto, tra l’esperienza familiare e quella d’attrice (nel primo capitolo), propone un’analisi filologica di alcuni capitoli del suddetto romanzo, collocandolo nel panorama coevo (nel secondo) e infine si concentra (nel terzo capitolo) sull’esperienza del “Gruppo di scrittura” tra anni ottanta e novanta, che Sapienza frequentò insieme ad altre autrici. L’elaborato sviluppa ipotesi già presentate in articoli pubblicati tra il 2012 e il 2019 nonché nella monografia Goliarda Sapienza: una voce intertestuale (1996-2016) (La Vita Felice 2016) e propone una sezione di interviste inedite ad autori ed amici di Sapienza. Chiude una bibliografia che aggiorna quella del saggio antecedente ed è nutrita dalle ricerche dell’ultimo triennio.

Cette thèse propose une lecture de l’œuvre de Bernard Palissy qui prend en compte le contexte réformateur qui se diffusa durant le Seizième siècle dans les divers domaines touchés par l’artiste: la religion, la science, la pratique artistique. Le premier chapitre fait le point sur l’état des connaissances certaines relatives à la vie et aux œuvres de Palissy, sur sa fortune critique, exposant ensuite une réflexion méthodologique sur les objectifs et les instruments de la thèse, et présente enfin un échantillon significatif d’exemplaires de la production rustique. Le second chapitre aborde la question du contexte réformateur dans lequel prirent forme les œuvres du céramiste, au niveau spirituel avec le refus de l’image sacrée de la part des premiers réformateurs protestants, mais aussi sur le plan épistémologique avec l’affirmation du savoir des praticiens, artisans, par opposition au savoir détenu par les théoriciens académiques. Le troisième chapitre s’interroge sur la signification de la rusticité revendiquée par Palissy dans ses œuvres, appelées rustiques figulines, en partant de l’usage fréquent de ce terme dans l’architecture de la Renaissance. Le quatrième chapitre est dédié à la description du jardin de Palissy ; il aborde les problèmes des possibles sources, de la nature de ce texte, et de sa dimension religieuse. Le cinquième chapitre est dédié à l’iconographie de la vaisselle rustique, et au lien entre art, spiritualité, et science, une réflexion qui aboutit sur une hypothèse interprétative profondément liée aux exigences spirituelles de l’artiste réformé
The thesis proposes a new and up-to-date reading of the artistic, figurative and written works of Bernard Palissy, a French potter who lived between 1510 and 1590. The first chapter takes on the current knowledge about Palissy’s life and work and the status of historiography about this artist. A methodological analysis will be achieved by studying a meaningful sample of his craftsmanship, as well as reflecting upon three of his written works. Then it examines the context in which the religious reform influenced Palissy’s work, as well as the epistemological reform constituted by the establishment of craftsmen as owners of a practical knowledge culminated in essays written in vernacular languages, of which the publications of our author are an example. The third chapter focuses on the notion of “rustic” that Palissy uses to describe his works, the rustiques figulines, starting from the architectural lexicon we try to locate the palissian lair in the artistic horizon where the taste for rustic was spreading on a Europe-wide scale. The fourth chapter is devoted to the description of Palissy’s garden, while trying to study in depth the nature of the publication itself, its possible sources and proposing new comparisons with other gardens of the time, raising the question of its religious dimension. Finally, we concentrates on the pottery and the link between science, religion and art that is created in the works of Palissy, and propose an interpretation of this objects as artefacts destined to the wunderkammern by virtue of a recurrent iconography, its specific techniques of realisation and symbolical meanings

La tesi di dottorato propone una ricerca interdisciplinare su documenti figurativi ed epigrafici prodotti a Roma (e nel territorio adiacente), durante il periodo della cosiddetta “Riforma Gregoriana” (metà secolo XI - metà del secolo XII). Si tratta di un lavoro che è insieme di storia dell’arte figurativa, di storia delle ideologie e delle culture (e perciò di autori e testi), nonché di paleografia epigrafica. La ricerca è stata organizzata in tre parti. La prima è un’introduzione alla storia e al contesto sociale di Roma nonché all’organizzazione ecclesiastica durante la Riforma gregoriana. L’esigenza di un rinnovamento interno alla Chiesa, volto all’emancipazione dal potere imperiale, comportò un diverso atteggiamento nei confronti delle immagini rispetto alla tradizione. In questa sede sono stati esaminati gli scritti di Bruno di Segni (Sententiae). Essi hanno svelato la presenza di una “teoria artistica riformata”, nonché elementi fondamentali per la comprensione della simbologia connessa all’edificio ecclesiastico, alle immagini e alle scritture. Lo status del testo scritto si è rivelato, infatti, significante anche dal punto di vista “iconico” poiché la scrittura aveva un valore autenticante, oltre ad essere uno strumento mnemonico e liturgico. Nella seconda parte della ricerca è stato proposto un inedito esame delle “scritture esposte” di Roma (secc. XI-XII). In questa sezione sono state esaminate le iscrizioni d’apparato librarie (nelle Bibbie Atlantiche e nei rotoli di Exultet), le epigrafi su supporto lapideo (lastre di dedica, di consacrazione, etc.) e le iscrizioni presenti nei manufatti artistici monumentali (cicli pittorici e mosaici). Il lavoro ha messo in luce le diverse tipologie scrittorie presenti nella Roma gregoriana, in gran parte improntate alla capitale d’imitazione classica e influenzate da modelli librari. Il confronto tra la capitale tipizzata delle Bibbie Atlantiche e le epigrafi lapidee dell’età di Gregorio VII ha dimostrato l’intervento della committenza pontificia nella formazione di un modello grafico da esporre al pubblico, quale “manifesto” della Riforma. Inoltre, le stringenti relazioni formali tra le scritture librarie e le iscrizioni degli apparati figurativi hanno evidenziato gli scambi “culturali” tra gli esecutori e i committenti dei cicli dipinti (o a mosaico) e gli scriptoria monastici, in particolare quello di Montecassino. Ad esempio, sono emerse le connessioni tra le scritture dei cicli pittorici della chiesa inferiore di S. Clemente, di S. Anastasio a Castel S. Elia e dell’Immacolata di Ceri, consentendo di precisarne la cronologia. Tali scambi hanno inoltre rivelato che la concezione e l’organizzazione del registro visivo erano improntate sui principi della composizione “retorica”, che guidava le pratiche di lettura, la scrittura dei codici e dei rotoli liturgici. La terza parte propone due casi esemplari del metodo interdisciplinare adottato: i mosaici absidali di S. Clemente e di S. Maria in Trastevere. Dal mosaico di S. Clemente è emersa la particolare costruzione “retorica” dell’iconografia, frutto di una stretta connessione tra il testo delle iscrizioni, la loro realizzazione grafica, e le immagini. La complessità del programma figurativo ha rivelato due diversi orientamenti di lettura, uno rivolto ai canonici riformati, l’altro alla congregazione dei fedeli. Il rapporto tra testi e immagini, improntato sulle pratiche liturgiche e cultuali, fu, infatti, funzionale alla selezione del pubblico. L’esame del mosaico di S. Maria in Trastevere ha, d’altro canto, evidenziato il mutamento della strategia propagandistica della Chiesa. Il messaggio trionfale del mosaico, espresso dal tema simbolico dello sposalizio di Maria desunto dal Cantico dei Cantici, mira alla celebrazione del trionfo ecclesiastico e di Innocenzo II nella qualità di Vicarius Christi. L’analisi del mosaico ha fatto emergere numerosi elementi di novità connessi, ad esempio, all’uso simbolico del colore e delle tipologie grafiche, nonché alla loro interazione in chiave iconologica. La ricerca è stata completata da un censimento delle epigrafi romane prodotte tra i secoli XI e XII, dove sono state raccolte le inedite informazioni che hanno costituito la base del lavoro.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the theme of freedom in Goliarda Sapienza's narrative, focusing in particular on three works: Lettera aperta (1967), L'arte della gioia (1998, posthumous) and Io, Jean Gabin (2010, posthumous). The analysis concentrates on the interplay between body and power in processes of identity formation; the main aspects taken into consideration are gender, sexuality and political ideology, with specific attention to the power involved in human relationships. This thesis comprises four chapters. The first three develop a close textual analysis of individual works, each one progressing from the exploration of the internal composition of the self to the analysis of identity in its interpersonal and socio-political dimension. The fourth chapter engages with a comparative analysis of the same works’ narrative structures, accounting for the role of writing in the evolution of Sapienza’s narrative. I identify the pivotal tension of Sapienza's works in the ideal of freedom, and propose to define her narrative as Epicurean and anarchic, characteristics that place it at the intersection of post-structuralist and Marxist-feminist discourses. Overall, I argue in favour of Sapienza's originality and significance within the context of 20th-century Italian literature. I suggest an affinity between Sapienza's works and the literary legacy of Pirandello and Svevo, as well as certain tenets of postmodern fiction, but also a significant difference, concerning the presence of a tension towards agency and subjectivity, extraneous to the trajectory of the modern and postmodern subject. From a position of marginality and ex-centricity, Sapienza gives voice to a radical aspiration to individual and social transformation, in which writing and literary communication are granted a central role. Her works trace the parable of a strenuous deconstruction of oppressive norms and structures, aimed at retrieving a space of powerful bodily desire, which constitutes the foundation of the process of becoming a subject.

L’anatomie humaine a représenté dans l’Antiquité la discipline principale du savoir médical. Au Moyen-âge, la connaissance anatomique était basée sur les enseignements de Galien. À partir de Vésale, l’étude de l’anatomie humaine va être fondée sur l’observation directe des cadavres, marquée toutefois par la difficulté d’obtention des corps. L’éclosion des disciplines étudiant la cellule et les structures infracellulaires, les techniques d’imagerie, des préjugés religieux et culturels dans certains pays, ont progressivement réduit la pratique des dissections anatomiques sur cadavre, pouvant être cause d’un déficit de formation anatomique des étudiants et des jeunes chirurgiens. Pour y pallier, dans le cadre de leur coopération institutionnelle, les deux universités de Nantes et de Rome, ont décidé d’organiser des vidéoconférences à visée pédagogique et de recherche, objet final du présent travail, qui comporte dans sa première partie un important rappel historique
Since the ancient age, human anatomy has represented the principal font of medical knowledge. In the middle-age, anatomical knowledge was based on Galen teaching. From the Renaissance, with Vesalius, the study of human anatomy is based on the direct and experimental evidences. In the following centuries, with the development of anatomy, anatomists tried to find out body to dissect in any legal or illegal way. Nevertheless, the discovery of radiology and the interest for the cells and sub-cell structures, together with religious and cultural prejudices in some country like Italy, in the last two centuries, have progressively reduced the diffusion of cadaver dissections, causing a bad anatomical formation of medical students and young surgeons. For these reasons, we have organized videoconferences between Rome and Nantes, to discuss and propose to medical students and young surgeons subjects of surgical anatomy, starting from cadaver dissection

Die Dissertation mit dem Titel „Studien zur lateinischen Sapientia Salomonis“ geht vor allem hinsichtlich der Vulgatatradition, aber auch der übrigen lateinischen Überlieferung der SapSal auf Textkritik, Textgeschichte und Textvergleich ein. Zu Beginn wird herausgearbeitet, inwiefern und weshalb sich die drei modernen kritischen Ausgaben des Vulgatatexts der SapSal bei ihrer Rekonstruktion von dessen Archetyp unterscheiden. Zudem wird eine Bewertung voneinander abweichender Lesarten in den jeweiligen Rezensionszeilen gegeben. Daran anschließend wird die Frage behandelt, warum eine qualitativ eher mangelhafte lateinische Textform der SapSal Eingang in die Biblia Vulgata gefunden hat. Zunächst wird gezeigt, dass die Vulgatatradition der SapSal im fünften Jahrhundert n.Chr. in Rom aufkommt; hiervon ausgehend wird der Erfolg dieser Textform nicht einer gezielten Auswahl, sondern einer Verflechtung und Wechselwirkung zwischen der Verwendung dieses Texts durch Katholiken in Rom und der römischen Buchproduktion zugeschrieben. Schließlich wird anhand der Wiedergabe der griechischen Begriffe athanasía, aphtharsía, dikaiosýne und nómos sowie der zugehörigen Adjektive dargelegt, dass sich der Vulgatatext der SapSal zwar eng an seine griechischen und lateinischen Vorlagentexte anschließt, aber auf Grund seiner Übersetzungsweise auch Besonderheiten aufweist. Textliche Bezüge gehen im Vulgatatext gegenüber dem griechischen Text teilweise verloren und die eschatologischen Entwürfe des griechischen Texts erscheinen im Vulgatatext der SapSal als etwas reduziert. Darüber hinaus wird deutlich, dass der Vulgatatext der SapSal – anders als der griechische Urtext – nicht aus einem jüdischen, sondern aus einem christlichen Milieu hervorgegangen ist. Insgesamt wird eine bessere Verortung der Vulgatatradition der SapSal hinsichtlich der übrigen lateinischen Überlieferung, ihres historischen Umfelds und ihrer griechischen Vorlage erreicht.
The dissertation entitled "Studies on the Latin Wisdom of Solomon" deals with textual criticism, textual history and the comparison of texts, namely with regard to the Vulgate tradition but also with regard to the other Latin traditions of Wis. First, it is brought out to what extent and why the three modern critical editions of the Vulgate text of Wis differ in their reconstructions of its archetype. Moreover, the differing readings in the respective recension lines are evaluated. Subsequently, the question is addressed for which reason a qualitatively rather deficient Latin text form of Wis has found its way into the Biblia Vulgata. Initially, the Vulgate tradition of Wis is shown to have emerged in the fifth century AD in Rome; based on this, the success of this text form is ascribed not to a purposeful decision but to an interdependence and an interrelation between the use of this text by catholics in Rome and the Roman book production. Eventually, by means of the translation of the Greek terms athanasía, aphtharsía, dikaiosýne and nómos and their corresponding adjectives, the Vulgate text of Wis is demonstrated to affiliate to its Greek and Latin model texts closely but to feature peculiarities due to its translation method as well. In the Vulgate text, textual references are dissolved in comparison to the Greek text, and the eschatological sketches of the Greek text appear to be somewhat reduced in the Vulgate text of Wis. In addition, it becomes apparent that the Vulgate text of Wis has arisen – unlike the original Greek text – not from a Jewish but from a Christian milieu. All in all, a better contextualisation of the Vulgate tradition of Wis regarding the other Latin traditions, its historical environment and its Greek Vorlage is achieved.

Résultant de l’interaction de facteurs épigénétiques, environnementaux et fonctionnels, la variabilité morphologique craniofaciale des Homo sapiens n’a pas encore été pleinement analysée en termes de processus biologiques et évolutifs. Les effets structurants des allométries, de la flexion de la base du crâne et liés au patrimoine génétique ont donc été étudiés par morphométrie géométrique 3D à partir d’un échantillon de 290 crânes d’H. Sapiens de 100 000 ans BP à aujourd’hui. Les analyses suggèrent que la face, la voûte et la base du crâne fonctionneraient comme trois modules semi-autonomes. La structure intégrée du crâne résulterait de contraintes allométriques et génétiques et de l’existence d’interactions entre tissus mous et tissus osseux au cours de la croissance. La flexion du basicrâne serait liée aux relations allométriques de croissance et statiques. Enfin, les crânes d’H. Sapiens actuels et fossiles se distingueraient uniquement par des différences de taille
The Homo sapiens skull morphological variability, resulting from the interaction of epigenetic, environmental and functional factors, has never been thoroughly analysed in a biological and evolutionary context. Allometry, cranial base flexion and genetic effects were therefore studied using 3D geometric morphometrics applied to sample of 290 H. Sapiens skulls (100 000 years BP - today). The analysis suggests that the face, the vault and the cranial base would work as three semiautonomous modules. The integrated skull structure would only result from allometric and genetic constraints and from interactions between soft and bone tissues during the growth. The flexion of the cranial base would be linked to allometric relationships (ontogenic and static). The skulls of extant and fossil H. Sapiens would only differ by their size

Resumo: Os conceitos de sapientia e uirtus em Sêneca (4 a.C. ¿ 65 d.C.) permeiam grande parte de sua obra, sendo que, por vezes, encontram-se fortemente ligados: pode-nos parecer difícil pensar em uma pretensa relação de subordinação entre os conceitos de sabedoria e virtude em si mesmos; no entanto, o modo como ambos se conjugam na obra desse autor incita-nos a questionar se a meta final do homem é a virtude através da sabedoria, ou a sabedoria através da virtude. A filosofia estóica é bastante conhecida pelo fato de subjugar a lógica, e mesmo a física, à moral: como o próprio Sêneca apregoa, nada teria valor se não pudesse ser utilizado na vida prática. E, justamente no âmbito dessa, tais categorias são desenvolvidas nos escritos do estóico. Dessa forma, à primeira vista, tende-se a considerar que, para o filósofo, a sabedoria estaria subordinada à virtude. A pesquisa que realizamos dividiu-se em três etapas: a seleção e tradução de epístolas senequianas que expusessem sua concepção daqueles dois conceitos; a elaboração de notas explicativas; um estudo introdutório acerca da relação entre o ser sábio e a virtude, no contexto em que o filósofo se insere
Abstract: The concepts of sapientia and uirtus in Seneca (4 b.C. ¿ 65 a. C.) permeates a great part of his works, seeing that, sometimes, they are strongly linked: it seems to be difficult to think about an assumed relation of subordination between the subjects of wisdom and virtue in themselves; nevertheless, the form both get conjugated in this author¿s works incites us to question if the man¿s final goal is virtue through wisdom or wisdom through virtue. The stoic philosophy is well known by the fact of subjudging the logic and even physics to ethics: as Seneca himself proclaims, it would be useless if it could not be used in daily life. And, precisely on its ambit, these categories are developed on the author¿s writings. Therefore, at first sight, it tends to consider that, for the philosopher, wisdom would be subordinated to virtue. Our research was divided into three steps: selection and translation of Seneca¿s epistles that expose his conceivings about the two concepts; elaboration of explicative notes and an introductory study about the relation between being a wise man and the virtue, in a context where the philosopher inserts himself

La presente tesi si focalizza sul tema del ritratto, considerato a partire dal Museo, la villa fortemente voluta dallo storico comasco Paolo Giovio. In esso, la dinamica mnemotecnica sottesa alla costruzione dell’edificio si esplica mediante due principali elementi: le imprese, quali “ritratti dell’anima”, e i ritratti fisici, fisiognomici, quali volti della storia universale di cui il Giovio si fece acuto interprete e narratore. Entrambi caratterizzati da un “nodo sapiente” che lega vicendevolmente parola e immagine, essi diventano, quindi, occasione per indagare l’Alterità Musulmana entro l’opera gioviana. In particolare, l’attenzione è circoscritta a un nucleo di ritratti di Sultani Ottomani inclusi negli Elogia virorum bellica virtute illustrium veris imaginibus supposita, quae apud musaeum spectantur (Firenze 1551) del Giovio. Essi sono immagini di Ottomani la cui identità viene, tuttavia, definendosi grazie al “contrappeso” persiano. Considerazioni finali, queste, ancora volte a un mondo cavalleresco e a un Islam di cui Giovio riconosce opportunamente la pluralità.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine some factors that make a human grouse hunter to prolong and increase its hunting effort. The theory of optimal foraging is used for explaining their behavior. The data of this study is collected from a web-based inquiry from 2007 answered by grouse hunters in Sweden. The method that has been used is mainly bivariate statistics and logistic regression analysis. Key findings shows that an experienced grouse hunter has more than 5 times the chance of prolonging hunting effort when grouse density is high, compared to a beginner grouse hunter. On the same time experienced grouse hunters also stop hunting in advance when grouse density is low to a larger extent than inexperienced hunters. Other factors of importance for prolonging the hunting effort for a day are age and the travel distance to the hunting area. A hunter in the age of 35-60 years has got half the likelihood of prolong a good hunting day, compared to a hunter younger than 35 years old. A hunter that has travelled more than 300 km to the hunting area has got half the likelihood of prolonging, compared to a hunter with less than 300 km from its home adress to the hunting area. Conclusions: The result suggests that the behaviour of an experienced hunter is easier to explain by optimal foraging theory than less experienced hunters.

Considérant des populations humaines distinctes, on note des différences morphologiques squelettiques. Nous avons comparé les dimensions générales et les indices crâniens de populations actuelles avec le climat. Ces analyses montrent que l'influence des paramètres climatiques sur la morphologie crânienne n'est pas démontrée de façon formelle. Seul l'indice nasal est relativement bien corrélé au climat, de par le rôle thermorégulateur des muqueuses nasales, ainsi que certains indices avec l'altitude. Mais l'origine de ces différences se situe plutôt au niveau de l'origine des peuplements. La même étude sur des populations fossiles montrent que les différences à l'intérieur de chaque groupe sont sans relation forte avec le climat. Les Néandertaliens ne sont donc pas particulièrement adaptés au froid, ayant vécu une grande partie de leur existence en climat chaud. Ceci renforce l'idée que ces deux espèces différentes possédaient des processus évolutifs et physiologiques différents
Considering distinct human populations, we notice some morphological differences on skeleton. We have compared metrical dimensions and index of cranium for modern populations with the climate. These analyses show that climatic parameters influence can not be categorically asserted. Only the nasal index is relatively well correlated with climate, through thermoregulatory role of nasal mucous membranes, as well as some indexes with the altitude parameter. But the origin of these differences should be précised using an other non-anthropologic way, i. E. The genetic way, at a peopling level. The same work about fossil populations show that the differences inside each group have no strong relationship with climate. Neandertals, are not necessarily adapted to cold climate, because they used to live a great part of their existence in warm or temperate climate. This strengthen the idea that we have two different species with different evolution and physiologic process

La grotte de Tabon (Palawan, Philippines) est un site préhistorique majeur en Asie du Sud-Est. Elle a livré des fossiles d’Homo sapiens datant du Pléistocène supérieur, rares dans la région. Pourtant, son histoire demeure mal connue : d’importantes altérations physiques et chimiques compliquent la lecture de sa stratigraphie, tandis que des objets archéologiques sans contexte clair entravent l’élaboration d’une chronologie fiable. Cette étude jette un nouveau regard sur la grotte de Tabon à travers une approche pluridisciplinaire des sciences de la Terre. Elle explore notamment l’environnement et le climat des premiers hommes anatomiquement modernes dans la région. Les résultats mettent en lumière une période clef entre 40 et 33 ka BP, caractérisée par des climats plus secs, des paysages plus ouverts et une empreinte humaine marquée dans la grotte. Cette période a également été ponctuée par un court épisode d’humidité qui a laissé un spéléothème gypsifère étendu en guise de témoin. Dans l’avenir, de nouvelles approches, prenant en compte les contraintes particulières du site, pourraient permettre de souligner davantage la valeur scientifique et patrimoniale unique de la grotte de Tabon, une fenêtre sur les premiers périples de notre espèce à travers les archipels d’Asie du Sud-Est
Tabon Cave (Palawan, Philippines) is a key prehistoric site in Southeast Asia, one of the few to have yielded Homo sapiens fossils from the Late Pleistocene. Its history remains poorly understood: heavy physical and chemical alterations have greatly complicated its stratigraphy, and contextually isolated archaeological finds hamper the construction of a clear chronology. This study reexamines Tabon Cave using a multi-pronged geosciences approach to explore environment, climate, and early modern human presence in the region. The results reveal a major period in the cave’s history between 40 and 33 ka BP, when drier climates, more open landscapes, and active human use of the cave were briefly spaced by a wet episode that left an extensive, gypsiferous speleothem. Future innovative research approaches spurred by the unique constraints of the site will undoubtedly further highlight the unique scientific and heritage value of Tabon Cave, a window into the earliest odysseys of our species across the archipelagos of Southeast Asia

Les caracteres les plus frappants concernant la vascularisation sont une regression de la presence du sinus spheno-parietal entre l'homo erectus et l'homo sapiens, une augmentation du rameau anterieur meninge qui recouvre une surface encephalique de plus en plus vaste et une complexification du reseau qui se charge d'anastomoses. Pour l'encephale, un net raccourcissement du bec encephalique a ete note, ainsi qu'un elargissement important des regions frontales. Les bascules des lobes frontaux vers l'avant et des lobes occipitaux vers l'arriere entrainent une fermeture de la vallee sylvienne, un rapprochement du cap de f3 et du pole temporal, un abaissement de la scissure de sylvius, un enroulement des lobes occipitaux et cerebelleux entrainant une fermeture de l'excavation temporo-cerebelleuse

In den vergangenen Jahrhunderten wurden zur Erleichterung der menschlichen Existenz enorme materiell-technische Mittel entwickelt und erzeugt. Diese drohen nun ihre menschlichen Schöpfer zu ersticken, wenn diesen keine Weiterentwicklung ihrer wirtschaftlichen, sozialen und geistigen Selbstorganisationsmuster gelingt. Erforderlich ist eine Aufhebung der das Denken und Handeln beschränkenden Spaltungen. Es geht um eine Integration der real zusammenwirkenden, doch im menschlicher Theorie und Praxis weitgehend getrennten Bereiche von Umwelt und Inwelt, Theorie und Praxis, Wirtschaft und Geist, Rationalität und Intuition, Management und Kunst, Liebe und Arbeit etc. Die Differenzierung dieser Bereiche und Begriffe war einst notwendig um die menschliche und gesellschaftliche Evolution aus den engen Grenzen nur naturgegebener Umwelten und Verbände bzw. religiöser Dogmen zu befreien. Deshalb geht es auch um kein "Zurück" zu natürlichen oder vormodernen Einheiten und Zuständen, sondern um eine Wiederverbindung auf neuer, bewußter, differenzierter Ebene. Dazu braucht es einer "Neue Sicht der Dinge" und neuer Begriffe für ein neues, ganzheitliches oder integrales Verständnis menschlicher Wirklichkeit. Die vorliegende Arbeit analysiert diese historische Situation und entwickelt durch eine Synthese natur-, sozial- und geisteswissenschaftlicher Begriffe neue Erkenntnis- und Evolutionsperspektiven des Menschen. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Begründung der subjektiven Voraussetzungen, als primäre Bedingungen für die Initiierung nachhaltiger Entwicklungen.
In the last centuries enormous means for the eleviation of human existence were developed. These means now threaten to choke their human creators if they don´t develop their economical, social and spiritual patterns of selforganisation. Necessary is a transcendence of the splits which limit the human theory and practice, an integration of the real interacting but in our mind widely seperated spheres of environment and inner life, of theory and practice, of economy and spirit, of rationality and intuition, of management and art, of love and work and so on. The differentation of these spheres once was nessecary to liberate the human evolution from the narrow limits of natural environment and primary groups respectively religious dogmas. Thats why the solution is not going back to natural or premodern conditions but integrating a new, and more differenciated consciosness. It needs a new sight and new concepts for a new, holistic and integral understanding of human reality. This book analyzes this historical situation of mankind and develops new theoretical and practical concepts through a synthesis of natural, social and spiritual sciences. The core is the theoretical foundation of the subjective assumtions as primary conditions for the beginning of a sustainable development.

In the past, efforts to prove or disprove stasis in hominids have relied upon univariate tests such as Students's t-test. Severe methodological and interpretive problems arise from the misapplication of univariate statistics to questions concerning variation in shape through time. These are questions best addressed using the multivariate approach of morphometrics. Eighteen cranial dimensions drawn from 33 mid and late Pleistocene Homo sapiens were examined using principal component analysis (PCA). PCA divided the sample into two distinct morphologies. Archaic Homo sapiens of the mid Pleistocene clustered with Wurm I neanderthals and apart from post Gottweig early anatomically modern Homo sapiens. ANOVA and Cluster analysis confirm the groups represent two different morphologies rather than a single spectrum of morphological change. These results support stasis rather than phyletic gradualism during this period of hominid evolution.

La tete osseuse est, chez l'homme actuel, la region du squelette pour laquelle la variabilite morphologique est la mieux documentee. Tres peu de donnees sont, en revanche, disponibles concernant la mise en place de cette variabilite et son developpement durant la croissance de l'individu. Notre base de donnees regroupe 778 enfants issus de collections de reference et de series archeologiques, et repartis selon 4 classes d'ages definies suivant le stade d'eruption dentaire. Trois categories de caracteres sont definis : ceux impliques dans des processus de maturation osseuse, ceux qualifies de juveniles et les derniers ont une connotation phylogenetique. Pour chaque categorie, une analyse de la variabilite des traits ainsi selectionnes, prend en consideration l'age, le sexe et l'origine geographique des enfants. L'expression uni- ou bilaterale des caracteres est egalement testee. De plus, l'examen d'adultes issus des memes series permet d'analyser l'evolution de chacun des caracteres au-dela de la derniere classe d'age definie pour les sujets non-adultes. La discussion des resultats de l'analyse prend egalement en compte les eventuelles liaisons entre les caracteres selectionnes. Cette documentation de la variabilite morphologique des caracteres de la tete osseuse, au cours de l'ontogenese, permet, enfin, de rediscuter des donnees couramment admises pour les enfants fossiles et particulierement celles visant a isoler les enfants neanderthaliens.

Sénèque respecte scrupuleusement l’orthodoxie stoïcienne en affirmant à plusieurs reprises que la santé physique, en tant qu’« indifférent » moral, ne doit en aucun cas être un objet d’attention. Toutefois, parallèlement à ces considérations, il compose une œuvre dans laquelle la souffrance physique occupe une place considérable. La présente étude, à travers l’examen des théories et des représentations du dolor physique dans l’œuvre philosophique de Sénèque, se propose de résoudre ce paradoxe apparent et de déterminer précisément les fonctions d’un tel emploi. Dans un premier moment, après avoir défini la notion de dolor physique et établi une typologie précise, nous démontrons l’omniprésence du motif du corps souffrant et en dégageons les raisons externes, qu’elles soient socio-anthropologiques et culturelles, politiques, littéraires et même personnelles. Dans un deuxième temps, nous étudions la dimension médicale des représentations de la souffrance, afin de définir chez le philosophe le niveau de sa connaissance des auteurs spécialisés et l’origine possible des théories pathologiques et thérapeutiques qui affleurent dans son œuvre. Dans un troisième temps, nous envisageons le dolor physique au sein de la pensée philosophique de Sénèque. Nous nous employons à démontrer que le dolor physique possède une fonction éthique de premier ordre et que Sénèque ne se limite à présenter des éléments dogmatiques, mais développe également une série d’exercices pratiques permettant de sortir vainqueur du combat contre la douleur physique
Seneca scrupulously respects Stoic orthodoxy by repeatedly asserting that physical health, as a moral “indifferent”, should never be an object of attention. However, alongside these considerations, he composed a work in which physical suffering holds an important place. The intent of this study, through the analysis of theories and representations of physical dolor in Seneca’s philosophical works, is to solve this apparent paradox and to accurately establish the functions of such use. In a first time, after having defined the notion of physical dolor and established a precise typology, we demonstrate the omnipresence of the pattern of the suffering body and draw external reasons for it, whether they might be socio-anthropological and cultural, political, literary and even personal. In a second time, we study the medical aspect of the representations of suffering in order to define in the philosopher the level of his knowledge of specialized authors and the possible origin of the pathological and therapeutic theories that emerge in his work. In a third time, we consider the physical dolor in Seneca’s philosophical thought. We apply to demonstrate that the physical dolor has a first order ethical function and that Seneca does not confine himself to submitting dogmatic elements, but he also develops a series of practical exercises that allow to emerge victorious from the fight against physical pain

Abstract:
Ce travail sur descartes prend pour objet ce qui, des regulae aux passions de l'ame, est nomme la "sagesse humaine". Il montre que cette unite thematique est sous-tendue par celle d'un unique probleme : la determination de ce qui est requis pour concevoir l'essence de la verite comme certitude. On etablit d'abord que la verite comme certitude suppose la distinction de la passivite apprehensive del'entendement et de l'assentiment actif de la volonte, ce qu'elabore la theorie du jugement vrai (med. Iv). Cette theorie n'est possible que lorsque descartes realise l'ecart qui s'instaure entre l'operation qui elabore l'objectivite de ses objets (entendement) et celle qui s'assure de l'objectivite ainsi constituee (volonte), ecart que les regulae ne construisaient pas dans la theorie des naturessimples. La creation des verites etemelles et la demonstration de la regula generalis en sont la traduction parce qu'elles permettent la theorie de l'idee comme idea rei, qui se substitue a celle des natures simples, une cogitatio etant dite vera en tant qu'idea. On peut de ce fait tirer les consequences des acquis conceptuels precedents en montrant ensuite que le projet des regulae de la mathesis universalis en tant que scientia (unite de la methode et du savoir qu'elle autorise) est assume par le dialogue inacheve sur la recherche de la verite qui en exhibe l'echec, ce qui permet d'en proposer une datation. Ainsi nait la possibilite d'une philosophie premiere, dont la tache est de fonder la pretension de la methode (theorie de l'evidence) a la verite (certitude), reelaborant le projet d'une dialectique qui etait deja celui des regulae. On justifie enfin par la que le dernier degre de la sagesse ait donne lieu a une morale de la passion, c'est-a-dire de la passivite constitutive de l'entendement que la volonte doit maitriser dans le libre usage qu'elle fait d'elle-meme. La sagesse humaine dessine ainsi la finitude de l'essence humaine qui est celle de la verite meme.

A avaliação de desempenho é mais que uma ferramenta gerencial, é uma medida estratégica de sobrevivência das organizações. Melhorar o desempenho faz parte dos desafios diários dos gestores que necessitam constantemente encontrar novos níveis de competitividade principalmente pelo mercado globalizado e pela dinâmica das inovações. Este estudo tem como objetivo desenvolver um modelo de avaliação de desempenho da etapa de implantação do Sapiens Parque, fundamentado na metodologia Multicritério de Apoio à Decisão Construtivista - MCDA-C. O Sapiens Parque é um parque de inovação, localizado na ilha de Santa Catarina, que consiste em um ambiente dotado de infraestrutura capaz de abrigar empreendimentos, projetos e outras iniciativas estratégicas, como o turismo, a tecnologia, meio-ambiente e serviços especializados. A pesquisa esta ancorada no paradigma construtivista, na lógica indutiva, com estratégia de estudo de caso, e tem natureza exploratória, com abordagem qualitativa e quantitativa. Para a coleta de dados foram utilizadas as técnicas de entrevistas, observações e análise documental. Utilizou-se a Metodologia Multicritério em Apoio à Decisão ¿ Construtivista - MCDA-C para a construção do modelo de avaliação de desempenho da etapa de implantação do Sapiens Parque. Como resultados o modelo possibilitou identificar: (i) 71 critérios para avaliar a etapa de implantação do Sapiens Parque; (ii) quatro áreas de preocupação: "Estrutura", "Ativos", "Clusters¿ e ¿Atores¿; (iii) 62 pontos no perfil de desempenho da situação atual do Sapiens Parque na aplicação do modelo. Após os cálculos efetuados em conformidade com a MCDAC foi possível apresentar recomendações de melhoria que possibilitariam melhorar a performance de um desempenho global de 62 para 78 pontos. O estudo também permitiu ampliar o conhecimento do processo de avaliação de desempenho organizacional e de parques tecnológicos
Performance evaluation is more than a management tool, is a strategic measure of survival of organizations. Improve performance is part of the daily challenges of managers who constantly need to find new levels of competitiveness mainly by the global market and the dynamics of innovation. This study aims to develop a model for evaluating the performance of the deployment phase of the Sapiens Park, based on the methodology Multicriteria Decision Aid - Constructivist (MCDA-C). Sapiens Park is a park of innovation, located on the island of Santa Catarina, which consists of an environment with infrastructure capable of housing developments, projects and other strategic initiatives, such as tourism, technology, environment and specialized services. The research in this constructivist paradigm anchored in inductive logic, with case study strategy, and has an exploratory nature, with qualitative and quantitative approach. The techniques of interviews, observations and document analysis were used for data collection. We used the methodology Multicriteria Decision Aid-Constructivist (MCDA-C) to construct the performance evaluation of the implementation stage of the Sapiens Park. The model abled us to identify: (i) 71 criteria for assessing the stage of implementation of the Sapiens Park; (ii) 4 areas of concern: "Structure", "Active", "Clusters" and "Actors"; (iii) 62 points on the performance of the current situation of the Sapiens Park in profile. After applying the model calculations made in accordance with MCDA-C, was possible to make recommendations for improvement that would allow improving the performance of an overall performance from 62 to 78 points. This study also broadens the knowledge of the evaluation of organizational performance in technology parks

Este trabalho tem como objeto o pensamento político de Sêneca em sua relação com a filosofia moral estoica. Nossa hipótese é a de que a construção da noção de poder político em Sêneca se dá por meio da vinculação entre duas figuras chave de seu pensamento, a do sábio (sapiens) e a do príncipe (princeps). Isto é, pretende-se mostra, precisamente na leitura do Tratado sobre a clemência (De Clementia), que existe uma íntima relação entre, de um lado, a formação moral do governante e, de outro, as formulações teóricas da doutrina estoica acerca do homem virtuoso, do sapiens. A arte política por excelência, por não se desvincular da Ética (para o estoicismo), é materializada na interrelação existente entre a figura do princeps e a figura do sapiens, implicando, portanto, a formação moral do governante como elemento imprescindível ao bom exercício do poder político.
This paper has as its object the political thought of Seneca in his relation with stoic moral philosophy. The hypothesis is that the construction of the notion of political power in Seneca occurs through the linking between two key figures of his thought, the wise (sapiens) and the prince (princeps). This is intended to show precisely the reading of the Treaty on clemency (De Clementia), that there is a close relationship between, on the one hand, the moral education of the ruler and on the other, the theoretical formulations of the Stoic doctrine of virtuous man sapiens. The political art par excellence, not to avoid its Ethics (for Stoicism), is based upon the interrelationship between the figure of the princeps and the figure of sapiens, implying therefore the moral education of the ruler as an essential element for the proper exercise of the political power.

Cette étude a eu pour objectif d'éclairer la question de la variabilité morphologique et métrique de la symphyse mandibulaire et des structures mentonières dans les populations actuelles et chez les Hommes fossiles à partir du genre Homo. Une nouvelle approche morphologique et de nouvelles mesures ont été réalisées au sein de ce travail, dans le but d'améliorer la diagnose des caractères morphométriques de la symphyse. Une nouvelle méthode informatisée, the GIMP, de calcul des surfaces symphysaires a été mis au point. Dans la plupart des populations actuelles, la symphyse mandibulaire a gardé quelques caractères archaïques au niveau des faces antérieure et postérieure. L'étude morphométrique comparée des structures symphysaires dans les échantillons actuels a mis en évidence une variabilité importante interpopulationnelle et intrapopulationnelle. Chez les fossiles, la symphyse, du point de vue morphologique et métrique, a évolué au cours de la lignée humaine. Cette évolution a été marquée par l'apparition des caractères modernes. De plus, nous avons pu prouver que l'apparition du menton est une conséquence de plusieurs phénomènes évolutifs et consécutifs. De plus, nous avons mis en évidence que l'acquisition des caractères modernes est plus rapide pour la face antérieure que pour la face postérieure de la symphyse.

Abstract:
Over the last years we have come to realize that the history of our species is not as simple as we once thought. We are now faced with complex demographic scenarios, events of admixture with human species and the realization that our differences with Neanderthals might be of gradient, not quality. Knowing all of this, we have to face the question of what did in fact change since the emergence of our species, to what extent, when did it happened in our evolution, and what consequences those changes bring for complex traits. This thesis tries to contribute answers to these questions, either through in silico analysis of open, publicly available genomic databases, or, when possible, in vitro, in collaboration with other research groups. Chapter 1 outlines the questions that are treated in this thesis and summarizes the results and arguments of each chapter. First, I present an overview of the current understanding of human evolution since the split between the Neanderthal/Denisovan lineage and the Homo sapiens branch. Then, I show what kind of core questions arise from the state of the field, namely what can be done to explore the relationship between genotype and phenotype over evolutionary time in humans. I follow with a succinct summary of the main methods and results of each chapter, showing how they try to answer each of these questions, as well as a final note on challenges and future steps. Chapter 2 explores the effects of Homo sapiens variants in gene expression in specific brain tissues, using the GTEx consortium eQTL database. We highlight the effect of regulation in human evolution, present contrasts with previous literature regarding directional gene regulation, and presents genes that correlate with brain volume GWAS signals. Chapter 3 presents the result of our collaboration with the team of Dr. Giuseppe Testa, showing how neurodevelopmental disease modeling can inform our understanding of human evolution. We show how BAZ1B, a gene implicated in Williams-Beuren syndrome, regulates neural crest stem cell induction and migration. Our work suggests that the BAZ1B regulatory network has undergone changes in human evolution, shaping the facial morphology of our species and validating previously-standing hypothesis about the biology of craniofacial morphology in humans. Chapter 4 applies an open large-scale database of allele age estimations (GEVA) to Homo sapiens specific variants in order to map species-specific genetic variation over time. We also apply gene expression predictions via machine learning and other time-sensitive genomic analysis,and present genes that have undergone changes in specific windows of human evolution.
En los últimos años nos hemos dado cuenta de que la historia de nuestra especie no es tan simple como una vez pensamos. Nos enfrentamos ahora a escenarios demographicos complejos, eventos de admixtura en el pasado con otras especies humanas y la realización de que nuestras diferencias con los Neandertales son de grado, no de cualidad. Sabiendo esto, tenemos que preguntarnos qué cambios tuvieron lugar desde la aparición de nuestra especie, hasta qué punto el fenotipo cambió, cuándo ocurrió en nuestra historia evolutiva y cuales son las consequences de esos cambios para rasgos complejos. Esta tesis intenta contribuir respuestas a estas preguntas a través de análisis in silico de bases de datos genomicas públicas, o, cuando es posible, in vitro. El Capítulo 1 delinea las preguntas que trato en esta tesis y resume los argumentos y resultados de cada capítulo. Primero determino las claves de nuestro conocimiento actual en evolución humana desde la separación entre el lineaje Neanderthal/Denisovano y la rama Homo sapiens. Después, muestro qué tipo de preguntas centrales surgen del estado del campo; específicamente, qué puede hacerse para explorar la relación entre genotipo y fenotipo en tiempo evolutivo en humanos. A continuación presento un resumen de los métodos y resultados de cada capítulo, mostrando cómo intentan resolver cada una de estas preguntas, así como una última nota sobre pasos futuros y retos. El Capítulo 2 explora el efecto de variantes Homo sapiens en expressión genética en tejidos cerebrales específicos, usando la base de datos de eQTL del consorcio GTEx. Los resultados resaltan el efecto de la regulación genómica en evolución humana, presenta contrastes con literatura anterior respecto a la direccionalidad de regulación genómica, y presentan genes que se correlacionan con señales de volumen cerebral en GWAS. El capítulo 3 presenta los resultados de nuestra colaboración con el grupo del Dr. Giuseppe Testa, mostrando cómo el modelaje de desórdener neurodevelomentales puede informar nuestra comprensión de la evolución humana. En este capítulo demostramos cómo BAZ1B, un gen implicado en el síndrome de Williams-Beuren, regula la inducción y migración de células madre de la cresta neuronal. Nuestro trabajo sugiere que la red reguladora de BAZ1B ha cambiado a lo largo de la evolución humana, cincelando la morfología facial de nuestra especie tal y como había sido predicho en la literatura anterior. El capítulo 4 aplica una base de datos de estimaciones de edad de variantes (GEVA) a variantes specíficas de Homo sapiens para localizar en el tiempo variación específica de nuestra especie en el tiempo. También aplicamos predicciones de expresión genética a través de Machine Learning y otros análisis, y presentamos genes que han cambiado en ventanas específicas de nuestra historia evolutiva.

Esta pesquisa de caráter teórico-analítico propõe analisar o fenômeno da agressividade e sua relação com o processo de produção da barbárie. A análise parte da contribuição da Teoria Crítica da Sociedade, em especial da filosofia de Theodor Adorno. Busca-se responder qual lugar, para a etologia e a sociobiologia ambas do campo das ciências biológicas a educação e a cultura ocupam no discurso teórico sobre esse fenômeno produzido pelos respectivos representantes: Lorenz (1974) e Wilson (1981). A hipótese considera que há uma tendência, no âmbito dos estudos biológicos, de compreender e explicar o fenômeno da produção da barbárie, vinculado às determinações cientificamente reducionistas. O que nos instigou, na realização desta pesquisa, foi a compreensão de como os argumentos próprios da etologia e da sociobiologia sustentam a explicação sobre o fenômeno relativo à destrutividade humana que, a rigor, têm determinações vinculadas tanto à faceta biológica do humano quanto, e principalmente, às ideologias que embasam ações no campo da ciência, política, economia, cultura, sociedade como um todo. De modo geral, a pesquisa corrobora a hipótese. As teorias dos autores aqui analisadas concebem que a barbárie, isto é, a violência irracional associada a ideologias, tem origem biológica. Seguindo a ideologia do darwinismo social, eles defendem que a barbárie, é o resultado da agressividade associada ao instinto de sobrevivência animal ainda presente no ser humano, independentemente das razões sociais a ela vinculadas. Por isso, os autores sugerem que o método científico materialista é o caminho para a compreensão e intervenção nesses fenômenos associados à natureza humana. Conclui-se que as teorias dos autores se baseiam no cientificismo, fruto da racionalidade técnico-instrumental, típico da ideologia de um sistema político-econômico que tende a depositar sobre os indivíduos a culpa pelas consequências sociais de uma sociedade regida pelo domínio de classe, considerando que a barbárie, apesar de ser um fenômeno social, fruto de um planejamento racional, também está associada ao domínio da natureza humana e à manipulação de mecanismos inconscientes e irracionais. Por isso, mesmo que a educação, sozinha, não consiga resolver as causas objetivas relacionadas à barbárie, aposta-se numa educação política que busque trabalhar os mecanismos subjetivos atrelados ao processo de produção da barbárie.

Skeletal superstructure characteristics such as thick cranial vaults and well-developed supraorbital, infraorbital, zygomatic, temporal, and nuchal regions in hominins are collectively referred to as aspects of craniofacial robusticity. A better understanding of craniofacial robusticity is important because these features are regularly employed as individual traits in circumscribing fossil hominins as a means to separate other taxonomic groups from modern Homo sapiens even though the developmental and functional underpinnings of such traits are incompletely understood. The work of some researchers suggests that these features may be tied to a broader "robusticity complex", in which the expression of all the classically "robust" characteristics of the hominin cranium are intercorrelated and intrinsically linked. If true, then previous studies that have focused on characteristics of craniofacial robusticity as individual characters could be flawed. This study tests for the presence of an intercorrelated craniofacial robusticity complex in a geographically diverse sample of recent Homo sapiens using a morphological integration framework. Within this framework, significant levels of correlation between features of craniofacial robusticity are demonstrative of integration and thus a "robusticity complex", while non-significant levels of correlation provide evidence for modularity and therefore an independent expression of these traits. Craniofacial robusticity is examined among four anatomical areas of the human cranium including the frontal, zygomaxillary, temporal, and occipital regions. The expression of robusticity among these anatomical regions is quantified using three-dimensional coordinate landmark data in addition to classical discrete measures and is analyzed via two-block partial least squares regression analysis. The results show that levels of interaction between these major anatomical units are characterized by a range of correlation values with most obtaining statistical significance. These results frequently provide evidence for integration between subunits demonstrating at least partial evidence for a "robusticity complex" in the craniofacial skeleton of extant humans.
