Sarah fielding etait la soeur de henry fielding et l'amie de samuel richardson. Elle fut a la fois journaliste, romanciere, critique litteraire et traductrice. Tres cultivee, elle possedait parfaitement grec et latin, et traduisit du grec les memorables de xenophon. Peu de femmes a l'epoque avaient ce talent. Son oeuvre comprend huit romans, et le premier ouvrage critique sur clarissa de richardson. David simple (1744) est un roman peripatetique et heuristique, a l'image de joseph andrews. The governess (1749) est le premier roman ecrit pour des enfants, dans la litterature anglaises. Sa philosophie de l'education est d'inspiration lockienne. Le dessein moraliste est omnipresent dans l'oeuvre de sarah feilding , il guide ecriture et lecture. Les autres romans de celle-ci sont une reflexion sur la condition feminine au 18e siecle, sur les relations entre les deux sexes, et sur les rapports de la femme au langage. Son oeuvre est un plaidoyer pour l'instruction des femmes, et pour leur independance morale. Elle annonce mary wollstonecraft et sa vindication of the rights of woman dont le ton est plus agressif et qui defend l'independance economique de la femme (ce concept n'apparait, en revanche, pas chez sarah fielding). Sarah fielding, si elle defend la cause des femmes, n'est pourtant pas un ecrivain revolutionnaire. She was a journalist, a novelist, a critique, and a translator. She was a very learned lady, she mastered greek and latin, and translated xenophon's memorabilia from the greek. Very few women in the 18 th century could make so good translation of a greek classic. Her works include 8 novels, and the first piece of criticism on richardson's clarissa. David simple (1744), her first novel, is a peripatetic and heuristic novel : like joseph andrews. The governess (1749) is the first piece of children's literature. Its philosophy of education is inspired by locke. The moralistic design, related to sarah fielding's latitudinarianism, is prevailing in all her novels. Both writing and reading should be guided by this christian, moralistic aim. Sarah fielding's other novels ponder over women's conditions in 18th century england, male female relationships, and women's relation to language. Her whole work is a plea for woman7s education and moral independence. It announces mary wollstonecraft vindication of the rights of woman, whose tone is nevertheless more aggressive, and defends woman's economic independence ( in sarah fielding's novels this concept doesn't appear)

Abstract:

This paper aims to find out what lex Sarah is and how the process looks like when it comes to the investigation, from reporting to registration to the IVO, the inspection of health and social care. Who investigates, the objective of the lex Sarah and how many cases of reports that comes to registration from the year between 2010-2014. Which legal consequences it can be for an employee who has been notified is investigated also. Previous research only deals with freedom of speech, criticism and the complaint goes to the asset, and because of that, this paper focuses on individual cases where employees ' perception of a lex Sarah-registration gives a psychosocial approach. The paper is limited to a municipality where statistics are retrieved and a comparison at a national level is performed. Furthermore, two interviews conducted with a socially responsible Coordinator (SAS)who is the responsible lex Sarah-investigators in the municipality and a Union representative person who can provide a possible picture of how people who have been in a lex Sarah-case, feel about that and also persons who have been suspended from their jobs because of the investigation, experienced the situations. It´s clear that people who ends up in situations like this is feeling very sad and gets in chock when they get a message that says they are involved in a lex Sarah-reporting.

Abstract:

The capability to perform dexterous operations in an autonomous manner would greatly enhance the productivity of space robotic operations. In the present thesis, we address this problem and propose a new methodology for vision-guided automatic grasping using SARAH, a three-fingered robotic hand. The Canadian Space Agency is planning to install SARAH on the International Space Station and we developed a methodology allowing this robotic hand to grasp objects autonomously by using a vision system in combination with an off-line grasp planner.<br>More specifically, a new algorithm for synthesizing force-closure grasps for planar and revolute objects with SARAH is formulated. The grasp synthesis explicitly takes into account the hand geometry constraints and optimizes several grasp quality criteria simultaneously. Subsequently, a vision-based approach for object pose identification is presented. A vision system incorporating a monocular camera mounted in the center of SARAH's palm was designed. Color information taken from a region of interest in the image and color indexing are used to locate the object in the scene. The virtual images predicting the appearance of the object are utilized for pose identification. The complete methodology is practical, ensures high quality grasps and provides an intuitive tool for automatic grasping.<br>Numerical results are presented for grasp synthesis of several objects with SARAH. These demonstrate the feasibility and optimality of the synthesized grasps, as well as the completeness and correctness of the methodology. Experiments were also conducted with SARAH as the end-effector of a 7-Degree-of-Freedom robot and vision-guided automatic grasping was achieved.

Abstract:

The central project of this thesis is to diagnose, define, and articulate the concept of resonance. Resonance is a deeply textual, but not intertextual, relationship that exists between fictional and theoretical texts, allowing the former to position itself as a co-discursive partner to the latter. This is achieved via the subtle importation of theoretical models into fictional settings. In this instance, a resonant relationship is traced between Sarah Waters’s three neo-Victorian novels – Tipping the Velvet, Affinity, and Fingersmith – and three publications which are representative of queer theory published in the early 1990s: Judith Butler’s Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity, Epistemology of the Closet by Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick (both published in 1990), and Terry Castle’s The Apparitional Lesbian (1993). As the introduction to this thesis clarifies, Waters’s novels are particularly useful to the resonant critic. All three novels are popularly and critically established as part of the neo-Victorian genre, yet their participation in many of that genre’s defining processes – overt intertextuality, metafictionality, parody – is limited. Limited, too, is their relationship with the Victorian texts that so infuse the genre. It is not, however, that Waters’s novels completely fail to reach for textual models; rather, as this thesis establishes, they reach for models found in contemporary queer theory, rather than canonical Victorian novels. This thesis contends that Waters’s fictions are examples of a distinctive assimilation and reworking of the postmodern principles that have helped to make the contemporary historical novel so very popular. The novels’ determination to articulate previously silenced voices, meanwhile, gives rise to this thesis’s second project, also stated in the introduction: an examination of the homonormative lesbians found in Waters’s novels. Women love, desire, and cherish one another – but are also viciously cruel, devastatingly unfaithful, and coldly deceiving to one another. The thesis as a whole identifies the range of relationships and individuals strewn across Waters’s neo-Victorian output as a co-discursive reverberation with queer theory’s politicised calls for queer representation. Each chapter surveys the extant scholarship on each of Waters’s novels, before pairing each fictional text with the theoretical text with which it resonates, in order to systematically examine the resonant relationship. As such, the fictional and theoretical texts examined in this thesis are given equal weight; theory is not positioned as a lens through which fiction is to be read. Chapter 1 traces models of performativity, Gender Trouble’s dismantling of the originating status of the body, and the failure of feminism to represent the lesbian through the bold picaresque narrative of Tipping the Velvet. Chapter 2 identifies Affinity’s claustrophobic corridors and panoptic middle-class houses as a receptive environment for an importation and repositioning of Epistemology of the Closet’s homosexual panic and the spectacle of the closet. Finally, chapter 3 finds the rather less deconstructive approach to lesbian bodies in The Apparitional Lesbian suggestive of Waters’s project as a whole; with regards to Fingersmith in particular, triangulated relationships, blocking gestures, and the de-apparitionalising of the lesbian are established as evidence of the resonant relationship.

Abstract:

Syftet med denna studie var att få en ökad förståelse för hur enhetschefer inom äldreomsorgen beskriver hur de ser på och använder Lex Sarah, vilka kunskaper som finns i ämnet och hur de resonerar runt ordet missförhållande. Studien är kvalitativ och bygger på semistrukturerade intervjuer. Studien utgår ifrån en hermeneutisk ansats eftersom jag ville veta vad mina respondenter hade för uppfattningar, erfarenheter och tolkningar. Sammanlagt var det sex enhetschefer inom äldreomsorgen som intervjuades. De beskriver vad de har för kunskaper, hur de använder Lex Sarah i verksamheterna och hur de ser på missförhållanden. Resultatet från studien visar på kunskapen inom ämnet Lex Sarah behöver bli bättre både bland enhetschefer och bland personal. Det behöver även förbättras inom området rapportering, det behöver bli en mer enhetlig syn på vad som är en påtaglig risk för ett missförhållande och när det ska rapporteras. Som det är i dag så klassificeras de olika händelserna fast det står i bestämmelserna att det inte ska göras. Respondenterna tycker att Lex Sarah är en bra och nödvändig del i det systematiska kvalitetsarbetet samtidigt så ser de det som ett skuldbeläggande. Studien har analyserats med hjälp av vetenskapliga teorier som organisationsteorier och ledarskapsteorier.<br>The aim of this study was to get abetter understanding of howunit managers in eldercare describe how they view and use the Lex Sarah, existing knowledge on the subject and how they reason around the word anomaly. The study is qualitative and based on semi-structured interviews. The study is based on a hermeneutic approach because I wanted to know my respondents ideas and experiences concerning Lex Sarah. Six unit managers were interviewed. The managers describe their knowledge, how they used the Lex Sarah in operations and how they see the ills. The result of the study shows that the knowledge of the subject Lex Sarah needs to be improved both among unit managers and among staff. It also needs to be improved in the area of reporting, there is a need for a more uniform approach to what a substantial risk of an anomaly is and when it should be reported. Today it`s classified in many different ways though it says in the rules that it should not be done. Respondents think that Lex Sarah is a good and necessary part of the systematic quality work at the same time they see it as guilt. The study has been analyzed using scientific theories organizational theories and management theories.

Abstract:

The American poet Sarah Piatt (1836-1919) addresses crucial dilemmas of modem identity, in particular the traumatic effects of war, the complexities of racial relationships and the unsettling dynamics of urban life. Although a respected poet in her day, Piatt's work disappeared after her death from the canon of American literature, and it is only in the last five years that scholars have begun to realise the importance of her poetry and to assess its depth and scope. This thesis contributes to the process of assessing the significance of Piatt's work, and contextualises her in relation to a number of other nineteenth-century American writers, including Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, Walt Whitman, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Mary Chestnut and Frederick Douglass. I focus on the rift between Piatt's Southern plantation childhood and her married life in the industrial North, and upon how the Civil War created irreconcilable conflicts and divided loyalties in her life, which are played out in her writing. I emphasise the Civil War as a moment of personal and cultural trauma, which inaugurates what I term Piatfs 'politics of mourning'. I explore her politics of mourning in relation to psychoanalytic theory. While Freud sought to rid mourning of its ambivalence and interminability, and to displace these onto melancholia, Piatt's writing blurs the boundary between them. Instead of dispensing with mourning too quickly, too easily, Piatt recognises that one cannot avoid being haunted by the past and by the dead. She engages in a dialogue with the past and explores how the desire of the dead continues to be played out by the living. In contrast to Northern writers like Phelps, Stowe and Whitman, who seek to heal the nation by appealing to the idea of sacrifice, and the pastoral, in order to console the bereaved and envisage a redeemed body politic, Piatt turns away from consolation. Instead, she takes mourning in a direction that leads towards an exploration of the uncanny, the ghost-like and the hallucinatory. She explores the stifling effects of mourning in the South, and the way in which the North buried the unpleasant realities of the war, in the process of memorialising it. Piatt remained deeply emotionally invested in the South, yet she was also very critical of the Confederate Cause, and in her work she repeatedly interrogates her own investment in an idealised version of the antebellum South. I examine the ways in which Piatt scrutinises Southern discourses of race and slavery. I focus in particular on how she seeks to articulate a language of mourning for the South while also repeatedly exposing, and destabilising Southern fictions of mastery.

Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2003.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In 1932 the well-known Afrikaans writer and politician, C.J. Langenhoven, died in Oudtshoorn in his home, Arbeidsgenot. In his testament he appointed Sarah Goldblatt as the person responsible for the administration of his literary works. Sarah, a Jewish woman, immigrated to the Cape together with her family in 1897. The aim of this research was to find the possible reasons why Langenhoven chose an English speaking Jewish woman as his administrator. Jews were not accepted with open arms into the South African community, especially not Jews from Eastern Europe, the area where Sarah and her family came from. Anti-semitic feelings amongst the Afriaans population were especially strong during the thirties and forties. It was during this time, in 1932, that Sarah received the job as administrator. The period of research stretches from 1889 to 1975, from Sarah's birth to her death. A look is taken at the changing South African attitude towards Jews during Sarah's life. The role and position of the Afrikanerwomen during this time is also investigated. Oudtshoorn, the town in which Langenhoven lived and where the friendship between him and Sarah started, will also be put under the spotlight. Many Jews settled in this town and played an active part in the Oudtshoorn community. Not only the South African attitude towards Jews and women will be discussed, but also Langenhoven's and Sarah's personal perspectives on these subjects. Both their friendship and work relationship will be discussed. Their philosophy of life and their relationship will cast light on the reasons why Langenhoven finally decided to appoint Sarah as the administrator of his literary works. Sarah's greatest achievements were directly involved with Langenhoven. Opinions differ about the influence Sarah had on the way the South African community saw Langenhoven. The work as administrator for the literary works was not all Sarah did. Therefore a review on Sarah's contribution to the Afrikaans language and culture is also provided.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In 1932 is die bekende Afrikaanse skrywer en politikus, C.J. Langenhoven, op Oudtshoorn in sy huis Arbeidsgenot oorlewe. In sy testament het hy vir Sarah Goldblatt as administratrise van sy letterkundige nalatenskap aangewys. Sarah, 'n Joodse vrou, het in 1897 saam met haar gesin na die Kaap geïmmigreer en die in die studie word ondersoek ingestel na die redes waarom Langenhoven hierdie vrou as sy administratrise aangewys het. Suid-Afrika het nie altyd die Jode met ope arms ontvang nie, veral nie Jode vanuit Oos-Europa, die gebied waarvan Sarah en haar gesin afkomstig was, nie. Spesifiek gedurende die dertiger- en veertigerjare was daar 'n sterk antisemitiese gevoelonder Afrikanergeledere teenwoordig. Dit was juis in 1932 wat Sarah die taak as administratrise opgelê is. 'n Groot getal Jode het hulleself in die dorp gevestig en hulle het 'n daadwerklike impak op die Oudtshoornse gemeenskap uitgeoefen. Hierdie ondersoek is nodig om te sien waarom dit so vreemd was vir In Joodse vrou en In Afrikaner man, om so In spesiale vriendskap te kon deel. Nie alleen die Suid-Afrikaanse houding teenoor die Jood en die vrou word ondersoek nie, maar daar word ook na Langenhoven en Sarah se onderskeie houdings teenoor die sake gekyk. Beide hulle werks- en vriendskapsverhouding word ondersoek. Altwee se lewensuitkyk en hulle verhouding werp lig op die redes waarom Langenhoven uiteindelik sou besluit om Sarah as sy administratrise aan te stel. Sarah se grootste werk hou verband met Langenhoven. Opinies verskiloor die uitwerking wat sy op sy nagedagtenis gehad het. Haar werk as administratrise was egter nie al wat Sarah verrig het nie. 'n Oorsig oor Sarah se bydraes tot die Afrikaner taal en kultuur word dus ook blootgelê.

Sarah Bernhardt ( 1844-1923) fut l'une des dernières grandes reines du théâtre français. Grâce à sa voix d'or et à son corps androgyne, elle était capable d'interpréter les plus grands rôles. Certains auteurs, du reste, en firent leur actrice fétiche, à commencer par Victor Hugo, Victorien Sardou et Edmond Rostand. Mais son statut de légende vivante, Sarah Bernhardt ne le devait pas seulement à ses mérites dramatiques. Elle a su en effet, au fil des années, se construire une image de femme accomplie tant dans le domaine théâtral (comme auteur, metteur en scène et directrice de théâtre) que dans le domaine artistique (comme muse du symbolisme et de l'Art Nouveau, peintre et sculpteur). Que ce soit en France ou à l'étranger, les plasticiens, les graphistes et les décorateurs ont été fascinés par Sarah Bernhardt: les uns l'ont représentée, les autres ont travaillé pour elle (Eugène Grasset, Alphonse Mucha, René Lalique, Théophile Thomas, Mesplès, Amable, Eugène Carpezat, Philippe Chaperon, Marcel Jambon, Paul Paquereau, Emile Ronsin. . . ). Ce travail s'est donc donné pour but: de démontrer comment Sarah Bernhardt a construit son image et quels artistes se sont intéressés à elle (contemporains ou non); de proposer un catalogue raisonné visant à réunir d'une part, les oeuvres qui la représentent, d'autre part, celles dont elle est l'auteur, et dans une moindre mesure, celles qu'elle possédait.

Abstract:

Crave, the play I chose to direct as my thesis final project, constitutes a complex and crude portrait of our time, a moment in history marked by violence and individualism. These themes permeate the whole script, with its experimental and poetic style constitutes a challenge at the moment of staging it. This document is intended precisely to register the whole process of staging Crave. The first chapter presents the pre-production research, in which I trace the artistic trajectory of the author, British playwright Sarah Kane, in the context of experimental theater. I also analyze the play, and I present my directorial approach to it. In the second chapter I register the actual process of staging it; the methodologies I used in working with the actors and the designers, as well as the challenges I faced in applying them. Finally, the last chapter is a reflection upon the whole process, with the intention of evaluating my growth as a theater director through this project, which constitutes my final step in these training years at SIUC.

Cette thèse cherche à analyser les trois tournées de l’actrice française Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923) au Brésil, précisément dans les villes de Rio de Janeiro et Sao Paulo. Les voyages datant de 1886, 1893, 1905. Cette étude a comme arrière-plan les réflexions autour de la circulation culturelle et de la mondialisation de la culture au XIXe siècle. On considère les voyages Sarah Bernhardt comme un exemple précieux du processus de diffusion du théâtre français et d’internationalisation des publics. Coté brésilien, on percevra que cette même période, marquée par une forte présence artistique étrangère, est aussi le moment où les Brésiliens (ou du moins l’élite lettrée du pays) cherchent à penser l’identité du pays, tout en édifiant l’art dramatique national. L’enjeu de cette thèse est alors de comprendre comment la présence théâtrale étrangère se place dans ce contexte. Plus qu’une étude sur une « influence théâtrale » française au Brésil, l’objectif des pages qui suivent est de réfléchir à la formation de la pratique artistique brésilienne dans le cadre d’un processus plus large de mondialisation de la culture au XIXe siècle – où le théâtre occupe une place majeure. En ce qui concerne précisément Sarah Bernhardt, cette thèse cherche à démontrer l’importance de l’actrice dans ce phénomène. Grande étoile médiatique de la période, Sarah est, dans le même temps, liée au grand théâtre français de répertoire. La question est alors de comprendre comment ce « grand théâtre » se diffuse internationalement, tout en s’imprégnant des stratégies commerciales de l’industrie théâtrale de l’époque. Dans ce sens, on se demandera comment l’actrice construit son image à l’étranger, plus particulièrement au Brésil, et quelle partie du « marché » culturelle cherche-t-elle à dominer, soutenue par ses imprésarios. En un mot comment la « Sarah Barnum* » se veut-elle également ambassadrice du génie français ? Référence à l’entrepreneur de spectacles américain Phineas Taylor Barnum (1810-1891). Il était connu pour ses affaires très prospères dans le domaine culturel. Le Cirque Barnum, fondé en 1871 est devenu l’un des plus connus de l’époque et a rassemblé des artistes provenant de divers pays. Dans le monumental ouvrage édité par Noel Daniel sur le cirque aux Etats-Unis entre 1850 et 1950, Linda Granfield remarque l’importance de Barnum : « Aujourd’hui encore, les hommes d’affaires du monde entier étudient la conférence donnée par Barnum en 1858 et intitulée The Art of Money Getting («L’Art de faire de l’argent »). Il y exposait sa vision de la réussite financière et déclarait : « Aux Etats-Unis où nous avons plus de terres que d’habitants, il n’est pas difficile pour une personne en bonne santé de prospérer ». New York : Éditions Taschen, 2008. p.53) Les titres des différentes parties de son discours comme « Quoique que vous entrepreniez, mettez-y toute votre énergie », « Lisez la presse » et, une des clefs de sa réussite, « Faites de la publicité », continuent d’inspirer les entrepreneurs à ce jour. Le surnom « Sarah Barnum » a été employé par l’actrice Marie Colombier, dans un livre qui proposait de témoigner de la tournée de Sarah Bernhardt en Amérique. L’ouvrage paru en 1883, qui a fait scandale : « Les Mémoires de Sarah Barnum » cherchait clairement à donner l’image d’une Sarah Bernhardt cabotine et intéressée par le profit, tout comme le grand imprésario américain Taylor Barnum. Flammarion Éditeurs, 1887<br>This work proposes an analysis of the french actress Sarah Bernhardt's (1844-1923) three tours in Brazil, precisely in the cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo in 1886, 1893, 1905. Taking the thoughts about the flow of artists and the cultural globalization of the 19th century as a background, the present study considers Sarah Bernhardt tours as a precious example of the French theater diffusion process and of the internalization of audiences. In what regards Brazil, it is noticeable that the referred period, marked by a strong foreign artistic presence, is also the moment in which the country’s literate elite reflected about a project of a nation and about the construction of a national dramatic art. The focus of this thesis is, therefore, to locate Sarah Bernhardt’s tours in this panorama. More than a study about French “theatrical influence” in Brazil, our main goal is to ponder about the construction of the Brazilian artistic practice in a context of a broader process of cultural globalization in the 19th century, in which theater played a fundamental role. In what concerns Sarah Bernhardt specifically, this thesis intends to demonstrate the actress’s relevance in this phenomenon. Sarah was a great media star and, at the same time, associated to the french theater erudite repertoire. It attempts, therefore, to understand in what way this “repertory theater” is internationally broadcasted, also impregnating itself with commercial strategies common to the period’s theater industry. In that sense, the construction of the actress’s image abroad, specially in Brazil, is questioned. Also, what part of the cultural “market” Sarah Bernhardt and her managers tried to dominate is evaluated. In other words, how did the actress became Sarah Barnum, with a flair of ambassador of the génie français ?

Abstract:

This project contributed to a greater understanding of chemotherapy resistance in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), a prevalent issue to chemotherapy. The potential of the inflammatory transcription factor NF-ĸB as a therapeutic target was investigated to combat NSCLC chemo-resistance using in vitro and in vivo approaches. The activity of NF-ĸB was elucidated in models of chemo-resistant NSCLC and where specific inhibitors of NF-ĸB were used to block activity. In addition, a novel 3D model of chemo-resistance in NSCLC was generated which will serve as an important model in future studies.
