Abstract:
The present day economy of Sarawak is characterized by a small but rapidly growing, largely rural population engaged in low productivity, semi-subsistence agriculture; a dependence on the export of a few primary commodities; the relative absence of modern transportation linkages, and a small industrial sector. In many respects, therefore, Sarawak represents a microcosm of the underdeveloped world. Yet for about a hundred years Sarawak was ruled by the white Brooke dynasty and was touted as a true frontier for western expansion and an ideal setting for the exploitation of its natural resources. There was very little development during this period because Brooke rule was inimical to economic progress—the Brookes gave little or no financial assistance to the natives, undertook few developmental initiatives, and expected foreign entrepreneurs and missionaries to provide the rudiments of physical and social infrastructures. The Brookes believed that change, particularly far-reaching or rapid change, would be harmful to the natives. Consequently, when Brooke rule ended, the problems of economic development seemed more intractable while the supposed benefits of ‘white’ rule appeared less tangible.

Abstract:

Plantation agriculture under the Cameroon Development Corporation (CDC) registers an average annual turnover of over 50billion FCFA. The corporation is hailed as a major contributor to development in Cameroon. However, conceptualizing development in terms of inequality reduction through the increase in social benefits to disadvantaged groups paints a completely different picture of the corporation. Empirical work shows that although farm labourers are central to the corporation’s economic success, they are yet to fully benefit from the proceeds of plantation agriculture. The lack of significant improvements in residential and income standards of the multitude of the CDC farm labourers contradicts the view of the corporation as a “development” agent. The corporation has seemingly maintained a deplorable social responsibility record wherein farm labourers are the sacrificial lambs in the quest for increased economic output which is then proclaimed as “development”. This paper contradicts the praises sung by different authors to the CDC as an agent of development by giving an insight on the living conditions of a majority of the workers of this parastatal. It therefore looks beyond gross economic outputs by providing knowledge on what really trickles down to the underprivileged majority.

Abstract:
Economic reforms introduced in India during 1991–92 had triggered the process of economic development in the country. It is from this period a structural shift occurred in Indian industry. The liberalization has also facilitated the Indian industries to sell their products throughout the world market. As the multinational Corporation normally own, manage, and control production, they can sell their products all over the world without much difficulty. After the announcement of globalization in India, the number of multinational corporation had increased from 389 (1981) to 2303 (1996), about six fold increase in 15 years period. The present paper examines how multinational corporations help regional development. A case study approach was followed. Both primary and secondary data were collected from the Whirlpool India Limited for a period of 18 years, starting from 1983–84 to 2000–01. By using simple growth rate and regression analysis this study found that there is a favourable shift in employment and infrastructure development in the region. After the establishment of the MNC, the region has received various benefits, namely employment, better road and transportation, local markets, hospitals, street lights, drinking water and other infrastructural facilities. Further more, this MNC has not harmed the growth of tiny and small scale industries in the region. In fact, the MNC has helped many small-scale industries to establish their industries in the region.

Abstract:
Tropical deforestation and the associated economic, ecological, and equity issues have become a matter of general interest and concern for scholars, international conservation and environmental organizations, and local pressure groups. ‘Remote’ outposts like Sarawak (‘Land of the White Rajahs’) have suddenly been thrust into the limelight as conflicts arose between different interest and ethnic groups for allocation of land and rights to utilize forest resources. A review of existing knowledge and data is therefore necessary to set rainforest clearance in Sarawak in a local, national, and international political economy context. This paper looks at the following themes: the historical legacy of ‘commercial’ extraction of forest products; the growth of the timber sector and the development of state forest regulation; and the conflicts of interest for allocation of land and rights to utilize forest resources.

This study considers the impact that the particular funding structure used in the financing of black economic empowerment (BEE) transactions has on the expected outcome. Various structures are evaluated, each with their particular advantages and disadvantages. The report details the history of South Africa, the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), as well as the black economic empowerment phenomenon. An in-depth commentary on the financing structures used for BEE transactions within the IDC is presented together with a new, remodeled structure to be used in the analysis as part of a comparative study to determine whether the existing preferential Vanilla Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) structure garners the most appropriate result for the BEE entrepreneur. The statistical study tests whether the Vanilla SPV structure, where the financier is reliant on dividends for the repayment of their preference shares, is a better structure than the reworked SPV structure, where the financier is reliant on free cash flow for repayment. The results infer that access to free cash flow is preferred by both the financier, as well as the BEE party, as vesting is higher and the bullet payment required to attain that vesting is significantly lower.

Abstract:
In March 2002, the Coega Development Cooperation (CDC) announced that the infrastructure design was complete, and the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) was declared the first IDZ in South Africa. The Coega IDZ was established to improve the delivery of infrastructure in the Eastern Cape by addressing skill shortages, unemployment, constrained planning and project management capacity, under-expenditure, sub-standard infrastructure, and inefficiencies that characterise delivery of infrastructure by government in South Africa generally and the Eastern Cape Province in particular. In the process, socio-economic development and transformation in the Eastern Cape and South Africa as a whole will be advanced. The primary objective of the study was to investigate the extent to which the various determinants of foreign direct investment (FDI) influence the investment promotion strategy (IPS) used by the CDC, and how these determinants can be used in the IPS to increase the number of signed investors at the CDC.

Abstract:
Study project (MBA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2003.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The objective of this research was to determine how to strategically position Botswana Development Corporation (BDC) in the market. The idea was born out of the writer's view that the Corporation was losing its market share at the expense of its competitors. The study found that although Botswana is an ideal investment location for foreign direct investment, it is the unfortunate political developments in the region which scare investors away, hence detrimental to the BDC business. It was also discovered that in the financial services industry, in which the Corporation participates, cut-throat competition prevails. Companies in this sector are using quality, efficiencies and competences to competitively position themselves. Those companies which are doing well in these perspectives will attract a larger share of the market. Various models were discovered and recommended for BDC to employ in order to match its strategies and resources to remain competitive in the market. Recommendations which cover a broad spectrum of operations were suggested. These recommendations were brought up with the belief that they will create synergies in the Corporation. The research field merits continuous scrutiny and can also be extended to BDC subsidiaries.

Abstract:
Since its establishment as an emerging area of research in strategic management over a decade ago, business model research has had little consensus towards adopting a single definition or common language for this rapidly growing management concept. However, strong agreement as to the relevance of value creation within organizations underlies existing business model literature. Moreover, applications of business model frameworks outside the private sector have been limited. Recent literature has identified business model innovation and design as a critical tool in effective implementation of organizational strategy, and empirical research in business models from new and alternative perspectives may reveal linkages between strategic management issues and effectiveness in creating value in public and citizen sector organizations. Nevertheless, existing academic literature has not yet explored applications of traditional business model frameworks within a public sector context, nor has the need for empirical research linking the business model concept with public sector management been addressed. The main purpose of this thesis is to contribute to the understanding of how business models can be defined, redefined, and applied in city economic development agencies for application as a strategic public management tool. An analysis of how the business model of a prominent city economic development agency has been employed and how value is created within this model will be undertaken. This empirical study also aims to determine conceptual linkages between business model applications in city economic development and to contribute a theoretical foundation towards development of future research. Given the multi-faceted applications of the business model concept, the authors have conducted exploratory research targeting the application of current business model concepts and frameworks to a city economic development agency representing an influential global center of finance and commerce, the City of New York. The significance of conducting empirical studies on city economic development agencies is due to the influence in which these organizations have on industrial cluster growth, national economic competitiveness, and citywide and regional transformation. In considering this context, The New York City Economic Development Corporation is the primary economic growth engine for the City of New York, and strives to create and deliver value to citizens, businesses, and other stakeholders of New York City. Findings from this study suggest that economic development professionals have not adequately clarified the term ‘business model’ for promoting common language between strategists, project managers, consultants, and executives to support strategic business model design within city economic development agencies. The authors conclude that equally relevant to framing and applying theoretical foundations grounded in the business model concept, is the identification of value-creating activities within economic development agencies and development of citizen-focused value propositions. This empirical study aims to define, clarify and explore the former, while calling upon a need for future research of the latter.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the role that information and communications technology can play in advancing rural development for indigenous communities in BRICS and emerging economies. Using the Thunen model as a theoretical framework, this chapter begins by highlighting the twin challenges that indigenous communities face in balancing outside influences with the consolidation of traditional organizational structure and culture and a limited set of economic activities due to the disadvantage of economic distance. Three in-depth case studies in Tanzania and Sarawak, Malaysia, are carefully analysed to show how, with the appropriate institutional support, carefully executed information and communications technology projects have the potential to alter the vector of economic distance for remote indigenous communities thereby both strengthening and expanding the set of economic activities undertaken.

Abstract:
The corporation has undergone a fundamental change over the last few decades from an organisation with predominantly tangible assets, such as buildings and equipment, to the ‘mindful corporation’ with intangible assets, such as brands, patents and reputations. While the corporation has made immense contributions to economic prosperity and development, it is also associated with growing levels of income and social inequality. To correct its deficiencies and restore trust, it needs to be reinvented for the 21st century. It should be reconceived as a means of commitment to the promotion of the interests of its customers and communities as well as enhancing the wealth of its investors. This requires a careful reconsideration of the purpose of the corporation and its associated forms of ownership and governance. The humanities have a vital role to play in achieving this.

Abstract:
example of that multinational corporations are the highest form of managing of capitalist economic system. The notable separation of the countries of economic vanguard from other countries (group of the high-growth countries, the socialist countries, the countries) happened to a transitional economy on the basis of multinational corporation development. The economic aspect of this influence is accurately traced in effective instruments of industrial, scientific and technical, social and economic development. Evolutionary changes of the relations of property, the competition, strengthening of regularity of national economies in capitalist economic system are inseparably linked now with multinational corporation. Even in stronger, in the economic plan, the countries consider multinational corporation not only through a prism of economic influence, but also political domination. This moment is telling argument of finding of multinational corporation in the center of serious discussions concerning their role, positive or negative, in the international division of labor, in processes of movement of the capitals and globalization of world economy. It follows from this that the state economic policy in the Kyrgyz Republic which basis are processes of formation and development of the market relations, has to provide active use of the developed economic forms (in this case multinational corporation) more progressive system of the economic relations, i.e. modern capitalism. In this research attempt of theoretical justification of mutually beneficial cooperation of the Kyrgyz Republic with multinational corporation which will act as an interaction basis with multinational corporations present at the Kyrgyz Republic ("Kumtor Opereyting Company", Gazprom, Reemstma, Coca-Cola, etc.) is carried out.
