The structural parts on a piece of songket are important in identifying the type of songket and the designated parts for the decorative motifs. Not much has been written about the topic of Sarawak. Songket in the collection of the Sarawak Museum Department. Documentation and research have been done about the collections but they need to be written and published for public reading. So, the objective of this study is to introduce the names of the decorative parts found in a piece of songket. The research methodology used is field research, literature research and interviews with weaving experts. Three pieces of songket samples from the Sarawak Museum Department collection were selected for analysis. These songkets are in the form of women’s sarung which can also be used as men’s sabok. The findings of this study are used to form a structural framework on the songket based on the perceived perspectives of the researcher and termed as Anatomy of Sarawak Malay Songket (ASMS). It is hoped that this can be used as a reference for Sarawak songket researchers in the future.

Abstract:
The handover of Sarawak to the British in 1946 marked the beginning of the development of the health of the Dayak community in Sarawak from 1946 until 1963. This was because the British were fully aware of the importance of taking care of the health of the Dayak community in Sarawak as they have played an important role in the economic sector for a long time. For that reason, the British have given a serious focus on strengthening the health system in Sarawak during the aforementioned period. Therefore, this research wants to study to what extent the health of the Dayak community in Sarawak developed between 1946 and 1963. The objective of this research is to identify the diseases that were faced by the Dayak community in Sarawak. Subsequently, this study will analyze the steps and actions that were taken by the British in strengthening the health system in Sarawak. Finally, this study will evaluate the effectiveness of the empowerment of the health system in Sarawak in the aforementioned period. This research has its own importance due to the lack of focus in discussions related to the development of the health of the Dayak community in Sarawak by previous researchers either inside or outside Malaysia. This research is a historical approach that adopts qualitative and quantitative methods. Materials and sources are obtained from the National Archives of Malaysia, the National Archives of Malaysia Sarawak State Branch, the Sarawak State Library, and the Universiti Malaya Main Library. This study found that the British succeeded in strengthening the health system in Sarawak from 1946 until 1963. This success is measured through the reduction of contagion of dangerous diseases, the increase in the number of people, the Dayak community beginning to believe in modern medicine, and et cetera.

Abstract:
This paper discusses the adoption factors of electronic wallet, more specifically Sarawak Pay in Kuching, Sarawak. The Sarawak Government has a very aggressive mandate in terms of digital transformation to boost the e-commerce industry in Sarawak. Propel with the effort of federal and state governments in encouraging a cashless and digital society, Kuching will foresee a rapid rise in the adoption of Sarawak Pay. This paper adopts and expands the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) in addressing the adoption factors of Sarawak Pay. With a population of three quarter a million, it is vital to understand whether perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, perceived risk and reward play any significant roles in the adoption of Sarawak Pay. Data were collected from 204 respondents and the results were examined using partial least squares-structured equation modelling (PLS-SEM). Findings indicated that perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use and perceived risk have significant impacts on Sarawak Pay adoption. As a result of the study, the understanding of existing theoretical literature on e-wallets in Malaysia will be enhanced.

Abstract:
This article examines the results of the 2021 Sarawak State Election (SSE21) and explains Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) major victory. Analysts had predicted an unassailable success for GPS but stopped short of giving the coalition more than 70 seats (out of the 82 seats contested). This was due to restricted candidates’ movements caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, political uncertainties at the federal level and the challenges posed by newcomers such as Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) and Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK). However, the results indicated otherwise: GPS did the unthinkable, winning more than 90% of the seats in the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly, including recapturing some of the traditional seats held by the opposition. Moreover, it turned out that the COVID-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs) were advantageous to GPS and disadvantageous to the opposition. The article also explores a host of other factors contributing to GPS’s rise such as the coalition’s incumbency advantage, low voting turnout and the unhappiness towards the opposition among some segments of voters. GPS’s sweeping win has cemented its position in local politics and has given it more leverage as a kingmaker at the federal level. Even though the future looks promising for GPS, the prevailing political conditions at the federal level and the changing mood of the electorates will set to test the coalition’s dominance in Sarawak.

Abstract:
The formation of Malaysia is one of the more significant episodes in understanding the country’s historical chronology. This is because it symbolizes a large union in Southeast Asia through the merging of Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak, and Singapore. Behind the proposal for Malaysia’s formation, there were various reactions both opposing and supporting among the leaders and people of Sarawak. The proposal surprised them because the purpose of this plan was unclear. Therefore, this idea initially received negative reactions from Sarawak leaders. The opposition from the leaders of Sarawak were clearly plastered all over the front pages of newspapers in Sarawak, Singapore, and Malaya. In response, leaders from Malaya, Singapore, and Britain endeavoured to persuade the leaders and people of Sarawak about the benefits of the Malaysia formation plan. This brought relief to most Sarawak leaders who desired independence along with development for Sarawak. Against this background, this article attempts to uncover the reasons why there was a shift from negative to positive reactions among a significant number of Sarawak leaders. To obtain the research findings in this article, the research method used is content analysis, utilizing primary materials from archival documents. Newspapers were also utilized in the analysis of this article. These primary sources are supplemented with secondary sources that provide a comprehensive analysis to address the questions raised in the article. In this regard, several books related to the history of Malaysia’s formation are used. Findings from this study indicate that perceived assurances were sufficient for Sarawak’s independence within the formation of Malaysia. This is the hope of leaders and people of Sarawak for joining in the formation of Malaysia.

Abstract:
In Sarawak, the Christian missionaries carried out their Christianisation by establishing missionary schools. Through the establishment of the missionary school, they not only want to Christianise the Dayak and Chinese communities but also the Malay community. James Brooke was seen supporting the effort because he did not prohibit the missionaries’ actions. However, the effort was not continued after Francis Thomas McDougall retired in 1866. Despite failing to Christianise the Malay community, the missionaries succeeded in introducing a formal education system for women in Sarawak through the establishment of missionary girls’ schools. Therefore, this study was conducted to discussing the role of Christian missionaries in the development of formal education for women in Sarawak. With that, qualitative research has been carried out by analysing the selected sources especially the Sarawak Gazette. Through this study, it can be seen that the Christian missionaries played an important role in the development of women’s education because the establishment of girl’s schools has given women in Sarawak the opportunity to go to school. Its’ also succeeded in changing the public’s perception of intelligent women. Following that, the community began to allow their daughters to go to school. In fact, the Sarawak people’s itself also setting up their own girl’s school. This shows that the Christian missionary were the pioneers of formal education for women in Sarawak.

Abstract:
This paper discusses the influence of ethnicity in the formation of early political parties in Sarawak. The cession of Sarawak to the British government has led to the emergence of the people’s nationalism awareness leading to the formation of political parties in Sarawak. Discussion is done through the library method by analysing books, dissertation and articles by previous researchers. The results of this study found that the plurality of races in Sarawak played a significant role in shaping the political pattern in Sarawak. The evidence can be seen in the formation of political parties that are heavily influenced by racial elements. Thus, ethnic factors have become the main factor in the formation of political parties in Sarawak. This considering that the purpose of establishing the parties is to safeguard the interests of their respective races. Therefore, the influence of ethnicity in a party can be seen according to the composition of party membership which is dominated by certain races. However, there are also several other factors that influence the formation of early political parties in Sarawak. Among them are, differences in idealism, the effects of the 1956 municipal elections, the desire for independence, regional sentiments and the influence of a party's ideology. Overall, this study can disclose to the public that the racial nature has been rooted in political parties in Sarawak since the beginning. Therefore, it is suggested for the future studies, the researcher can analyse whether this race-based party has an impact on the political development in Sarawak.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Compared to Sarawak state elections, in the 2022 general election (GE15) the incumbent Sarawak Parties Alliance (Gabungan Parti Sarawak, GPS) and Sarawak-based opposition parties' campaigns demonstrated a tendency toward a moderate rather than radical autonomy discourse. In GE15, these candidates attempted to reconcile their regionalism with nationalism to stay relevant in the national political landscape. Meanwhile, opposition parties performed better in certain Chinese- and Dayak-majority seats, exposing the limits of the Sarawak autonomy discourse. To explain these patterns, this article locates Sarawak against the backdrop of a centralized Malaysian federal government to clarify the salience of both structural and cultural factors in shaping autonomy claims. It shows the importance of inclusive and democratic institutions, like a general election, in integrating peripheral communities and checking radical regionalism. Further, preceding the general election, the readiness of the federal government to delegate power to the state government effectively secured the state ruling elite's commitment to remain in the national government. However, institutional decentralization is insufficient to calm autonomy claims, as cultural pluralism increasingly underpins Sarawak regionalism. Sarawak's autonomy discourse will not fade away and could radicalize again if the central government holds to exclusive ethnoreligious nationalism.

Abstract:
This article aims to examine the performance of Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the 2021 Sarawak State Election (SSE21). It explains the three main reasons for PH’s dismal showing. First, local-based political parties took advantage of structural weaknesses in Sarawak PH and managed to convince Sarawakians that state rights could only be protected by political entities controlled by Sarawak leaders. Second, the “Sarawak First” sentiment changed the political landscape of Sarawak and increased the sense of solidarity among Sarawakians. It was the driving force behind the campaign messages of the local-based political parties that resonated well among the majority of the Sarawakian voters. Third, the three PH coalition parties in Sarawak, namely Democratic Action Party (DAP), Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and Parti Amanah Negara (AMANAH) did not have a common political ideology to bind them together, strengthening the common belief that DAP, PKR and AMANAH came together simply out of convenience to gain power. In order to survive in Sarawak, PH needs to rebuild its image and political strategies relevant to the needs of the Sarawakians voters. This article is based on data from online media sources and observations made during the election on 18 December 2021.

Abstract:
An election manifesto reflects the vision of a political party in its effort to gain support from potential voters to win seats. Most political parties will produce manifestoes that promise development projects to drive the country’s economy, provide employment opportunities as well as combat abuse of power. The 2021 Sarawak State Election (SSE21) was an election that attracted the attention of state and federal observers. For the first time, the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) was contesting after the disbandment of Sarawak Barisan Nasional (BN) in 2018. In addition, it was also the first election for the new Sarawak Chief Minister, Abang Johari Openg. SSE21 was the first battleground for several Sarawak nationalist parties such as Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) and Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK). Using critical discourse analysis, this article aims to analyse the content of GPS, PSB and PBK’s manifestoes. The focus of this study is the issue of state nationalism, state development and inter-ethnic relations presented in the manifesto.

Abstract:
In most organizations, Environmental Management Systems (EMS) adoption is based on voluntary basis, in which the adoption depends on organization’s aspirations for better environmental performance. Organizations are attracted by very practical benefits through implementation of EMS in their organizations. The primary purpose of an EMS implementation is to improve environmental performance continually in an organization. This research investigates the factors that drive the adoption of EMS by organizations in Sarawak. Empirical findings of a survey on the above in Sarawak organizations are presented. About 112 survey questionnaires invitations were forwarded to various organizations in Sarawak and a total of 47 responses (about 42.0%) were received, Walford (1995) in his assertion said that sampling techniques require 10 percent or more of observations or sampling fraction so that they are to be considered representative of the total population From this research, organizations which have implemented an EMS are mostly from larger organizations in Sarawak which have been established for more than 15 years with over 251 employees and more than one operating location. The results showed that ISO 14001 is the most common EMS frameworks adopted by organizations in Sarawak; followed by Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). Among the EMS adoption factors in Sarawak, EMS implementation motivation and the role of top management are the most critical factors in EMS adoption in Sarawak. Besides, management support is also another essential factor for EMS adoption among Sarawak organizations; followed by current market orientation factor.

Abstract:

Abstract: The legal status of Sabah and Sarawak in the Malaysia Agreement of 1963 became a contentious issue for the Malaysian public because of claims that Sabah and Sarawak entered the Federation of Malaysia as equal partners with the whole of Peninsular Malaysia, rather than as states within the federation. A further claim is that a constitutional amendment in 1976 downgraded the status of Sabah and Sarawak to the same level as the 11 states in the Malay Peninsula, an argument found in propaganda issued in connection with the Sarawak State Election in 2016 and the Malaysian general Election in 2018. This paper refutes these claims, showing that under the Malaysia Agreement Sabah and Sarawak are simply two states within the federation, and that the constitutional amendment of 1976 did not change their legal status.

Abstract:
This article discusses aspects of identity building in the national literature of Sarawak. The author argues that the presence of a variety of authors in Sarawak is quite unique in expressing the ethnic diversity of Sarawak. This is because some of the ethnic writers include local colour in their writings. The situation is different in Peninsular Malaysia; although there are various ethnic groups such as Javanese, Banjar Bugis, Malaysian aborigines and Minang, there is little foregrounding of this in their writings, unlike what can be found in Sarawak. The ethnic diversity in Sarawak brings with it a number of ethnic issues, while at the same time representing problems that exist within these ethnic societies. The use of the national language in the works produced in Sarawak provides a national perspective without neglecting local issues that authors attempt to deal with. Authorship, theme and thinking, as well as the authors’ attitudes in the works are also discussed in order to look at the dimension of national authorship in the context of local knowledge. ABSTRACTZoonotic knowlesi malaria has replaced human malaria as the most prevalent malaria disease in Malaysia. The persistence of knowlesi malaria in high-risk transmission areas or hotspots can be discouraging to existing malaria elimination efforts. In this study, retrospective data of laboratory-confirmed knowlesi malaria cases were obtained from the Sarawak Health Department to investigate the spatiotemporal patterns and clustering of knowlesi malaria in the state of Sarawak from 2008 to 2017. Purely spatial, purely temporal, and spatiotemporal analyses were performed using SaTScan software to define clustering of knowlesi malaria incidence. Purely spatial and spatiotemporal analyses indicated most likely clusters of knowlesi malaria in the northern region of Sarawak, along the Sarawak–Kalimantan border, and the inner central region of Sarawak between 2008 and 2017. Temporal cluster was detected between September 2016 and December 2017. This study provides evidence of the existence of statistically significant Plasmodium knowlesi malaria clusters in Sarawak, Malaysia. The analysis approach applied in this study showed potential in establishing surveillance and risk management system for knowlesi malaria control as Malaysia approaches human malaria elimination.

Abstract:
This article analyses the performance of the candidates and political parties contesting in the Dayak-majority constituencies in the 2021 Sarawak State Election. It explains why, despite the promotion of Dayak issues by Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) and Pari Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) and the presence of ethnonationalist parties such as the Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru (PBDSB), the Dayak continued to support the ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS). The article argues that the success of GPS in securing the Dayak support can be attributed to three reasons: first, GPS’s ability in accentuating the “Sarawak First” sentiment among the Dayak; second, the ruling coalition’s ability in dispensing tangible development and economic benefits to the Dayak; and third, the political division among the Dayak which weakened their representation and influence outside of GPS. In the larger scheme of things, even though the theory of ethnic party competition can be used to explain the growth and survival of ethnic-based parties and ethnic politics in West Malaysia, it is only partially applicable in Sarawak, as the dynamics of the Dayak politics shows.

Abstract:
To remain relevant in Sarawak’s Digital Economy Agenda (2018-2020), Mathematics teachers in Sarawak need to align their content with current expectations for the future workforce in the state. Big data analytics is a crucial driver to the Digital Economy Agenda, as it is stipulated to intensify economic growth in Sarawak. To be fluent in big data analytics, one has to master mathematical cognition. This study investigates the readiness of Mathematics teachers in urban and rural Sarawak, to highlight mathematical cognition in their teaching, to prepare their students for the requirements of big data analytics for the digital economy in Sarawak. The participants are 38 teachers who are currently teaching mathematics in primary and secondary schools from urban and rural areas across Sarawak. Data was collected using an online survey that was distributed via social media. It was found that there was no difference in the choices of teaching strategies used by mathematics teachers in Sarawak despite multiple demographic factors such as gender of their students, types of school, districts and years of teaching experience. Teachers were fully aware of the digital economy agenda, and they were conscious of the current state of their students who were deemed still unprepared to take part in the Sarawak Digital Economy Agenda.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The “Saudara Kita” is a term for the non-Malay Islamic community comprising various races and ethnicities in Sarawak, Malaysia. This term helps to identify the convert groups in Sarawak. This study was conducted to explore adaptation strategies used by Muslim converts in Sarawak. This qualitative research involved five participants who have converted to Islam for more than 5 years and reside in Sarawak. The data collection method used semi-structured interviews and data analyzed used thematic analysis. The research findings indicate five main themes arose for the adaptation strategies among Muslim converts, which are (1) exploring inner and outer challenges, (2) challenge adaptation strategies, (3) adaptation needs, (4) support system, and (5) exploring the role of counselors. The increase in the number of Islam converts in Sarawak each year requires exploration of challenge adaptions to plan developmental da’wah programs for Muslim converts, to enhance their Islamic faith. The objective of this program is to build a solid identity for Muslim converts so that they will be consistent in practicing the Islamic way of life. Governments in the Sarawak region can make programs in order to improve the knowledge, skills, and adaptation of converts in Sarawak. So that converts can have support from the government to carry out activities and worship in accordance with Islamic life.

Abstract:

The purpose of this papar is to elaborate on the vital roles and core contributions of Fajar Sarawak (Malay newspapers in Sarawak), within the Western colonialism era in the Malay world, between the two world war eras (1941-1945). In this critical era, the Muslim scholars in Sarawak struggled firmly in insisting the so-called international terrorist aggression (Western colonialists) and devotionally boosted the ideas of Malay progression, via the intellectual discourse as well. The interesting question is why did they (as the ideas raised in the Malay newspapers) bravely opposed Western colonization, in spite of the different perspectives and approaches? The most essential aspect in this article will be focused on the Islamic struggle and aspirations of Fajar Sarawak, Utusan Asas, and Utusan Sarawak, in comparative perspectives as a whole.Hence, the structure of this article will be divided into three main themes. However, there are two aspects that will not be mentioned here; the background of the society in the respective eras and the impacts of the Malay newspapers struggle towards its nation as those topics need to be examined in other articles.

Abstract:
There are eight species of hornbills in Borneo. However, little is known on their distribution and ecology in western Sarawak. Their large size requires habitats that consist of large forest patch with large fruiting trees for feeding and nesting. They have an important ecological niche as seed dispersers throughout the tropical rainforests of South East Asia. This study briefly describes the distribution of hornbills in Totally Protected Areas (TPA) within western Sarawak based on data collected by Sarawak Forestry Corporation from 2013‒2016. We discuss the hornbill species distribution and the species area relationship within western Sarawak. The Rhinoceros Hornbill (Buceros rhinoceros) recorded the highest occupancy value (psi) and probability of detection (p), followed by the Black Hornbill (Anthracoceros malayanus) and the Bushy-crested Hornbills (Anorrhinus galeritus). The Helmeted Hornbills (Rhinoplax vigil) appears to occur in fewer TPA within western Sarawak. A long-term conservation plan is required to ensure the sustainability of the hornbill population through extending protected areas and connecting forest patches. In light of this, the research and conservation needs for these species in Sarawak are highlighted to ensure their long-term survival in the wild.

Abstract:
Environmental management has been in the process of evolution since Industrial Revolutions of 18th and 19th centuries. And the more recent is the development of international environmental management standards and guidelines to facilitate global trade. These environmental management standards and guidelines are usually known as Environmental Management Systems (EMS). This research investigates the implementation motivations in relation to EMS adoption in Sarawak, Malaysia organizations. Empirical findings of a survey on the above in Sarawak organizations are presented. About 112 survey questionnaires invitations were forwarded to various organizations in Sarawak and a total of 47 responses were received. The results of this research show that among the Sarawak organizations, the top three implementation motivations or benefits from implementing EMS according to their importance by the Sarawak EMS user’s organizations are 1) Legal compliance as the top benefit of EMS implementation; 2) Improvement in operational environmental protection; and 3) Corporate image advantages.
