Abstract:
In the domain of cyber security, the defence mechanisms of networks has traditionally been placed in a reactionary role. Cyber security professionals are therefore disadvantaged in a cyber-attack situation due to the fact that it is vital that they maneuver such attacks before the network is totally compromised. In this paper, we utilize the Betweenness Centrality network measure (social property) to discover possible cyber-attack paths and then employ computation of similar personality of nodes/users to generate predictions about possible attacks within the network. Our method proposes a social recommender algorithm called socially-aware recommendation of cyber-attack paths (SARCP), as an attack predictor in the cyber security defence domain. In a social network, SARCP exploits and delivers all possible paths which can result in cyber-attacks. Using a real-world dataset and relevant evaluation metrics, experimental results in the paper show that our proposed method is favorable and effective.

Abstract:
The comparative study results of pollen morphology of the mutational witches’ brooms and the normal part of the tree crown in Scots pine are presented. There is a decrease of pollen grains size, especially the sacci, in witches’ brooms. The witches’ brooms with more intensive branching have more expressive changes. Also, the witches’ brooms have more abnormal pollen grains. The data on the occurrence about 10 anomalous morphotypes of pollen grains are reported, most of that are related to the abnormal development of succi: different size of sacci, deformed sacci, reduced sacci, fused sacci, additional sacci, compress sacci, lack of one or both sacci. A high percentage of anomalies in the sacci development may be associated with less developed reticular sculpture of ectexine in witches’ brooms pollen.

Abstract:
Sarco(endo)plasmic reticulum calcium adenosine triphosphatase is responsible for transporting cytosolic calcium into the sarcoplasmic reticulum and endoplasmic reticulum to maintain calcium homeostasis. Sarco(endo)plasmic reticulum calcium adenosine triphosphatase is the dominant isoform expressed in cardiac tissue, which is regulated by endogenous protein inhibitors, post-translational modifications, hormones as well as microRNAs. Dysfunction of sarco(endo)plasmic reticulum calcium adenosine triphosphatase is associated with heart failure, which makes sarco(endo)plasmic reticulum calcium adenosine triphosphatase a promising target for heart failure therapy. This review summarizes current approaches to ameliorate sarco(endo)plasmic reticulum calcium adenosine triphosphatase function and focuses on phospholamban, an endogenous inhibitor of sarco(endo)plasmic reticulum calcium adenosine triphosphatase, pharmacological tools and gene therapies.

Abstract:
The alpha-sarcin cytotoxin is an extracellular fungal protein that inhibits protein biosynthesis by specifically cleaving one phosphodiester bond of the 28 S rRNA. The His137 residue of alpha-sarcin is suggested to be involved in the catalytic activity of this protein, based on the observed sequence similarity with some fungal ribonucleases. Replacement of this residue by Gln (H137Q mutant variant of alpha-sarcin) abolishes the ribonuclease activity of the protein. This has been demonstrated for an homogeneous preparation of the H137Q alpha-sarcin by measuring its effect against both intact rabbit ribosomes and the homopolymer poly(A). The conformation of H137Q alpha-sarcin is highly similar to that of the wild-type protein, which has been analysed by CD and fluorescence spectroscopy. Both H137Q and wild-type alpha-sarcin exhibit identical CD spectra in the peptide-bond region, indicating that no changes at the level of the secondary structure are produced upon mutation. Only minor differences are observed in both near-UV CD and fluorescence emission spectra in comparison to those of the wild-type protein. Moreover, H137Q alpha-sarcin interacts with phospholipid vesicles, promoting the same effects as the native cytotoxin. Therefore, we propose that His137 is part of the ribonucleolytic active site of the cytotoxin alpha-sarcin.

Abstract:
alpha-Sarcin is a cytotoxic protein produced by the mould Aspergillus giganteus. Insertion of alpha-sarcin into asolectin membranes has been demonstrated by protein labelling with photoreactive phospholipids. alpha-Sarcin added externally to tRNA-containing asolectin liposomes degrades the entrapped tRNA. Trypsin-containing asolectin liposomes were also prepared. Encapsulated trypsin degrades alpha-sarcin, even in the presence of a large excess of external hen egg-white trypsin inhibitor to prevent any alpha-sarin degradation outside the vesicles. These processes occur only with acidic phospholipids and were not observed when phosphatidylcholine vesicles were used. These results indicate that alpha-sarcin penetrates the lipid bilayer and becomes exposed to the lumen of negatively charged liposomes.

Abstract:
The so-called “sacred poem” was one of the most successful genres of the Italian literature between the 16th and the 18th century, but the works belonging to this category have usually been ignored by critics. My research aims at studying a limited part of this enormous literary production, considering the vernacular poems published in the Duchy of Milan between 1566 and 1706. On the basis of a meticulous analysis of the texts, often scarcely studied or completely unknown, I intend to determine the features of the sacred epic in the Milanese environment, which was strongly influenced by the cultural policy promoted by Carlo and Federico Borromeo. The authors of the poems are Sisto Poncello, Giovanni Maria Paroli, Cesare Della Porta, Ettore Colombo, Annibale Guasco, Giacomo Turamini, Antonio da Brugnato, Bernardino Baldi, Antonio Biaguazzone, Giulio Fe', Lelio Guidiccioni, Ambrogio Ferro, Francesco Antonio Tomasi, Francesco Pallavicini, Stefano Rossi, Giacinto Faggi, Giuseppe De Maltraversi, Pietro Paolo Giletti, Alessandro Ghirardelli, Basilio Bertucci.

Abstract:

APOLLONIO, SILVIA. "I Fasti sacri di Sforza Pallavicino: edizione e commento." Doctoral thesis, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10280/1850.

Full text
Abstract:
The commented edition of the unpublished and unfinished poem ‘I fasti sacri’, written by Sforza Pallavicino in the first years of his poetic activity, proposes new interesting information about Barberini’s circle in Rome, at the beginning of XVII century. Explicit definitions on poetic matter are in the ‘Discorso intorno al seguente poema’, with argumentations taken from the theoretical consideration on the epic poem by Tasso. On the model of Ovid’s ‘Fasti’, throughout seven cantos, each one anticipated by a subject in prose, the author covers the Christian calendar narrating the stories of some important saints and martyrs, in the same years of the revision of ‘Martyrologium Romanum’ promoted by the Pope Urban VIII. The poem, extremely close to ‘Poetica sacra’ by Giovanni Ciampoli but also in dialogue with other works of the classicism of Barberini’s circle, proposes itself as an alternative to Marino’s poetry, perceived like lascivious and mendacious. Notwithstanding an often polemic opposition to Secentismo, the text reveals some interesting consonances with Marino’s works, as well as with other authors of the moderate Marinism.

Grega, Lisa. "Very Low Reynolds Number Flow Over Non-Spherical Particles: Applications to Pollen Aerodynamics." In ASME 2016 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2016-67268.

Abstract:
Flows at the very low Reynolds number regime (<10) typically have application to the understanding of the dispersion of micro-scale particulates in the atmosphere, as well as microorganisms. Most particulates are non-spherical, requiring specialized studies in order to determine their settling velocities, drag forces, or interactions. The present study considers flow over saccate pollen with the goal of better understanding their flight dynamics. The pollen grains of several gymnosperm groups consist of a main body and one to three air-filled bladders, or sacci, forming ellipsoidal lobes. Previous studies have demonstrated that sacci increased the resistance coefficient of the grain compared to one without sacci, thereby improving its aerodynamic efficiency by increasing dispersal distance. In order to better quantify the effect of sacci position, size, and orientation on pollen dispersion, scaled-up physical models were created based on electron microscopy images. Furthermore, surface ornamentation or texture could be added to the models, adding a higher degree of realism. The models were suspended inside of a glycerin-filled tank capable of translating at very low speeds, producing Reynolds numbers as low as 0.05. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) was used to measure velocity fields in the wake of the pollen models. This experimental arrangement facilitated the ability to produce both steady and unsteady (i.e. accelerating or decelerating) flows. Differences among the wake flowfields were related to previously made measurements of pollen shape factors. These studies suggested that both sacci size, orientation or relative position on the main body, as well as surface texture affected this shape factor. The PIV measurements are capable of resolving wake details which demonstrate a wide stagnant flow region behind the main body and between the sacci. This is in contrast to a typical spherical or ellipsoidal geometry, which would be characterized by a single stagnation streamline at the aft, with the flow remaining attached and no wake present when Re<1. At these low Reynolds numbers, there does not appear to be evidence of flow reversal between the sacci; however rapid flow deceleration was capable of producing such reversals.

In ASME 2014 Internal Combustion Engine Division Fall Technical Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icef2014-5592.

Full text
Abstract:
Multi-mode combustion (MMC) concepts using homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) gasoline combustion at low loads and spark assisted compression ignition (SACI) gasoline combustion at medium loads have the potential for improved fuel efficiency relative to spark ignition (SI) gasoline combustion. Two MMC concepts are compared in this paper with respect to fuel efficiency and tailpipe NOx emissions. The first concept uses stoichiometric HCCI and SACI to allow standard three-way catalyst (TWC) operation. The second concept also uses HCCI and SACI, but cycles between lean and rich combustion and uses a TWC with increased oxygen storage capacity (OSC) for potentially even greater fuel efficiency improvement. This paper performs a preliminary comparison of the two MMC concepts by analyzing two scenarios: 1) cycling between stoichiometric HCCI at 2 bar BMEP (brake mean effective pressure) and stoichiometric SACI at 3 bar BMEP, and 2) cycling between lean HCCI at 2 bar BMEP and rich SACI at 3 bar BMEP. The effects of excess oxygen ratio during HCCI operation and the frequency of oxygen depletion events on TWC performance and fuel efficiency are investigated. Results show that MMC lean/rich cycling can achieve better fuel efficiency than stoichiometric HCCI/SACI cycling. NOx emissions are moderately higher, but may still be low enough to meet current and future emission regulations.

Rogers, Caroline. A synthesis of coral reef research at Buck Island Reef National Monument and Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands: 1961 to 2022. National Park Service, September 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/2294235.

Abstract:
This synthesis focuses on the history of research on coral reefs within two U.S. National Park Service units in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands: Buck Island Reef National Monument (from 1961 to 2022) and Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve (from 1980 to 2022). Buck Island Reef National Monument (BUIS) is off the north shore of the island of St. Croix, in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Established in 1961 and expanded in 2001, it is under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service (NPS). Long-term monitoring programs maintained by the NPS and jointly by the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) and the Virgin Islands Department of Planning and Natural Resources (VIDPNR) provide data on trends in living coral cover and specific coral species from 2000 and 2001, respectively. Disease, thermal stress (indicated by coral bleaching), and hurricanes reduced total coral cover periodically, but cover remained relatively stable from 2007 through the end of 2020. Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve (SARI) is a national park on the north shore of the island of St. Croix, in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Established in 1992, it is co-managed by the NPS and the Government of the Virgin Islands. Long-term monitoring programs maintained by the NPS and by the UVI with the VIDPNR provide data on trends in living coral cover and individual coral species from 2011 and 2001, respectively. In spite of thermal stress (indicated by coral bleaching), disease, and hurricanes, total coral cover remained relatively stable through the end of 2020. This document also includes results from extensive investigations by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and from many individual projects including those based out of the underwater saturation habitats Hydrolab and Aquarius from 1977 to 1989, as well as studies from researchers at Fairleigh Dickinson University’s West Indies Laboratory. While not possible to review all of these in detail, this report highlights information considered useful to managers, and scientists planning future research. In 2021, a particularly virulent disease called stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD), first noted in 2014 in Florida, and then in 2019 in the U.S. Virgin Islands, started killing corals in BUIS and SARI with the different species showing a gradient of susceptibility. An exact cause or link between this disease and human actions has not been discovered to date. The losses associated with this disease have now exceeded those from any other stressors in these national parks.
