Abstract:
The starting point for chapter 4 is a Sasanian rock relief carved into the mountain-side at Tāq-e Bostān in western Iran. This relief appears to show Mithra blessing the transition of power from the Persian King of Kings Shapur II to his successor Ardashir II (r. 379–383). As such, it is the only Sasanian rock relief to include an image of Mithra (Mihr in the Middle Persian language). Each figure in the scene is unlabelled, however, and each figure has received numerous identifications. This chapter explores the significance of these identifications for our understanding of Mithra’s worship during the Sasanian period, and the wider implications for the history of Zoroastrianism. In particular, the chapter addresses how, if at all, we can reconcile images with our far more abundant yet scattered textual sources.

Abstract:
‘Mythology and history’ describes the combined mythological and historical narratives that have had a powerful influence on contemporary Iranian identity. The mythological dynasties and stories were first written down in the 10th century by Abul Qasem Ferdowsi, in his epic poem Shahnameh, which has endured through the Muslim conquest and European Enlightenment due to its ethical function. Real historical figures, including Khosrow I and the Sasanian dynasty, are also described. The legacy of the ancient world for modern Iran can be discerned in four distinct areas: language; religion; and history; all of which contributed to the fourth: a distinct culture and ethical world view, based on an idea of justice.

Abstract:
In 1979 the Islamic Revolution overthrew the monarchy and transformed Iran’s relations with the outside world. Iranian history was reassessed along with the importance of Islam to Iranian identity. ‘Iran and Islam’ outlines the history of Iranians beginning with the wars between Sasanian Iran and its western Roman/Byzantine rival in the 6th century ce. It charts the fall of the Sasanian Empire to the Muslim Caliphate; the new Umayyad overlords; the Abbasid revolution in the 8th century ce; the rise of the New Persian language; the Mongol invasions of the 13th and 14th centuries and integration with Turanians; and the importance of Shi’ism to the Iranian people.

Abstract:
The product of a decade of research, The Iranian Expanse is a study of the natural and built environments of power in Persia and the ancient Iranian world from the consolidation of the Achaemenid Empire in the sixth century BCE to the fall of the Sasanian Empire in the seventh century CE. It analyzes the formation and development of some of the most enduring expressions of power in Persia and the ancient Iranian world: palaces, paradise gardens and hunting enclosures, royal cities, sanctuaries and landscapes marked with a rich history of rock art and ritual activity. It explores how these structures, landscapes and urban spaces constructed and transformed Iranian imperial cosmologies, royal identities, and understandings of the past. While previous studies have often noted startling continuities between the traditions of the Achaemenids and the art and architecture of medieval or Early Modern Islam, they have routinely downplayed or ignored the tumultuous millennium between Alexander and Islam. The first study of its kind, the Iranian Expanse shows how the Seleucids, Arsacids and Sasanians played a transformative role in the development of a new Iranian royal culture that impacted early Islam and the wider Persianate world of such dynasties as the Il-Khans, Safavids, Timurids and Mughals.
