Abstract:
The starting point for chapter 4 is a Sasanian rock relief carved into the mountain-side at Tāq-e Bostān in western Iran. This relief appears to show Mithra blessing the transition of power from the Persian King of Kings Shapur II to his successor Ardashir II (r. 379–383). As such, it is the only Sasanian rock relief to include an image of Mithra (Mihr in the Middle Persian language). Each figure in the scene is unlabelled, however, and each figure has received numerous identifications. This chapter explores the significance of these identifications for our understanding of Mithra’s worship du

This essay argues that the Church of the East should be seen as a Sasanian institution that adapted to a regime without central patronage in the Umayyad period. The seventh century was characterized by the private patronage of local elites and the conversion of polytheists. The Marwanid period saw a search for new Arab patrons after the regime began to remove prominent local elites. But the main beneficiaries of this patronage were rural monasteries, rather than the patriarchate, and it was only after the transfer of Baghdad that the patriarchs restored the kind of state patronage seen under t

Abstract:
‘Mythology and history’ describes the combined mythological and historical narratives that have had a powerful influence on contemporary Iranian identity. The mythological dynasties and stories were first written down in the 10th century by Abul Qasem Ferdowsi, in his epic poem Shahnameh, which has endured through the Muslim conquest and European Enlightenment due to its ethical function. Real historical figures, including Khosrow I and the Sasanian dynasty, are also described. The legacy of the ancient world for modern Iran can be discerned in four distinct areas: language; religion; and hist

Rituals governing menstruation were an important aspect of Babylonian Jewish life, and they took shape within the context of Sasanian Mesopotamia, where neighboring religious communities were similarly animated by menstruation and its assumed impurity. The Talmud’s Red Fence: Menstruation and Difference in Babylonian Judaism and its Sasanian Context examines how the Talmudic rules of menstruation functioned within the dynamic space of Sasanian Mesopotamia. It argues that difference and differentiation between pure and impure, women and men, gentile and Jew, and the Babylonian and Palestinian T
