Abstract:
“Get hold of portable property!” says one of the great Dickens characters in Great Expectations. The notion of “portable property” strikes me as deeply analogous to that of pieces of art, which are their creators’ “properties” exported to anyone who will take hold of them. Some of my most valued possessions are the portable properties handed down to me by musicians, painters, writers—most of whom I have never met. Often it is one specific aspect of an artwork that makes it important to me. Several months ago I was struck by how the ethereal coda (actually, the cadenza) of Elgar’s Violin Concerto simply stops the “music” of the piece, leaving the listener with just…music. The “redeemed” codas found in Bruckner’s symphonies similarly affect me as a listener, in their orchestration of the musical dust as it settles. These endings resonated in my head with that of the Dickens novel quoted above, in which an older, wiser Dickens even admits to not knowing how the story ends by writing his own divergent “codas.” Great Expectations has been a treasured “portable property” to me personally, and continues to haunt and humble me, as it did particularly while writing this piece. The Old Forge at Satis House is thus a welding of many “portable properties,” but in my mind at least, it is foremost a musical pondering of Dickens’s marshes and forges, and what they reveal about the difference between “great expectations” and great satisfaction.

A sociedade brasileira demanda crescentemente serviços públicos de qualidade e a aplicação de práticas consagradas na gestão privada é um dos pressupostos presentes no vigente modelo gerencial da chamada Nova Administração Pública, modelo esse que se propõe a auxiliar os gestores no atendimento dessa demanda com pertinência e efetividade. As Instituições Federais de Ensino Superior - IFES - necessitam profissionalizar a gestão de suas atividades para atingir excelência na prestação de serviço público. Serviço este prestado por seus servidores públicos, dentre eles os técnicos-administrativos. A presente pesquisa partiu da seguinte indagação: Qual é a composição da dinâmica satis-motivacional dos administradores que fazem sua carreira na Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora? O objetivo foi diagnosticar os componentes dessa dinâmica satis-motivacional que impactam o trabalho dos servidores públicos técnicos-administrativos - TAE – fazendo sua carreira no cargo de administrador numa IFES. A resposta alcançada pode subsidiar a construção de políticas motivacionais pertinentes de gestão de pessoas e a implementação de uma gestão estratégica de pessoas no âmbito da UFJF. Esta pesquisa coletou dados qualitativos mediante entrevistas realizadas com dez dos 42 administradores que compõem o quadro efetivo da UFJF. Tais entrevistas foram gravadas em áudio, transcritas e interpretadas por análise indutiva e fenomenográfica. Dentre as descobertas: (1ª) as motivações para trabalhar variam de acordo com a concepção que cada indivíduo subjetivamente elabora vivenciando o trabalho que realiza; (2ª) os fatores motivacionais que impactam positivamente no trabalho dos TAEs administradores na UFJF relacionam-se com: (i) o conteúdo do que realizam no cargo; (ii) o reconhecimento que recebem; (iii) a sensação de realização; (iv) a importância que eles mesmos atribuem ao cargo; (3ª) tais fatores motivacionais se manifestaram de acordo com duas concepções de trabalho explicitadas pelos sujeitos de pesquisa: (a) trabalho como impacto social relevante do resultado organizacional; (b) trabalho como conquista de objetivos pessoais dentro da organização. (4ª) Também se identificaram fatores motivacionais que impactam negativamente no trabalho e na motivação dos administradores bem como os que lhes trazem satisfação e insatisfação no seu trabalho. Compõem a dinâmica satis-motivacional do administrador na UFJF: o seu perfil, as atividades que realiza e o horizonte de carreira por ele almejado na IFES. Com base no diagnóstico satis-motivacional foi elaborada uma proposta de programa satismotivacional pertinente aos servidores TAE da carreira de administrador na UFJF e ao contexto organizacional. Este diagnóstico revelou indícios de estar se vivendo uma crise das motivações ligada à superqualificação do quadro de funcionários TAE que tendem a perder sua motivação pela realização de tarefas percebidas como de baixa complexidade. Os resultados são relevantes por lançar um olhar brasileiro e interpretativista do indivíduo e da dinâmica motivacional no setor público, que propicia aos gestores considerar a ótica dos próprios TAE para desbloquear o potencial motivacional de cada trabalhador e propiciar a eles realizarem sua própria remotivação dos que se encontram em processo de perda da motivação.

The main findings: (1st) motivation to work vary according to the conception of work developed by each individual through subjectively experiencing the performed work; (2d) the motivational factors that positively impact the work of TAs administrators in UFJF are related to: (i) the content of the job they perform; (ii) the recognition they receive; (iii) their sense of accomplishment; (iv) the importance they confer to their work; (3d) such motivational factors manifested according to two working concepts revealed by the interviewees: (a) work as having relevant social impact of organizational results; (B) work as an achievement of personal goals within the organization. It were also identified motivational factors that negatively impact the TA administrators‘ motivation as well as the ones that bring them satisfaction and dissatisfaction in their work. The administrators‘ in UFJF satis-motivational dynamic is compounded by: their profile, the activities they carried out and the career horizon they perceive at UFJF. Based on this satismotivational diagnosis it was drawn up a proposal for a satis-motivational program relevant to the administrators‘ career as technician public servants in UFJF and pertinent to the organizational context. This diagnosis revealed evidence of an existing crisis of motivations linked to the examined workforce over qualification that tends to result in a loss of their motivation when carrying out perceived low-complexity tasks. The results are relevant to launch a Brazilian interpretive perspective on individual and motivational dynamics in the public sector, that provides managers with information to release TA‘s own motivational potential and the re-motivation of those who are in a loss of motivation process. The results are relevant to launch a Brazilian interpretative perspective at the intrinsic individual motivational dynamics in the public sector, which provides managers the possibility to release the motivational potential of each worker and to propitiate their own re-motivation of those who are in loss of motivation process.

In our thesis, it's analyzed the cadre of the political and military relations operated by the Visigoths face to the various political centers in which had contact during the Late Antiquity. We emphasized, specially, to the creation of the conflicts that, inevitably, erupted of the complex cadre of tension, conflicts and negotiations that were established between that cores. From a sequence of promulgated precepts by the Roman imperators and Visigoth monarchs, in various legal documents that produced during the Late Antiquity, we analyzed, also, how was conceived its political and military organization. Therefore, our research has an analytics condution marked by a view focused on the foreign policy and also on the constituent elements of the internal policy of the regnum. To effectuate this research, we used the theorical and methodological assumptions provided by the concept of Late Antiquity. This concept being stepped in a long term view, it was an important sinew deeply exact to the purposes of our research, once it was allowed to us to pay attention to a sequence of distinctive aspects of a specific past, but they ended up staying on the late-old picture, that it was constituted as the center of all of our analysis. Proving the perception that the History is composed of both disruptions and by continuities.
En nuestra Tesis, analizamos el cuadro de las relaciones político-militares desplegadas por los visigodos frente a los diversos núcleos políticos con los que establecieron contacto durante la Antigüedad Tardía. Hacemos hincapié, especialmente, en la naturaleza de los conflictos que, de forma inevitable, irrumpieron en el complejo marco de las tensiones, conflictos y negociaciones que se establecieron entre tales potencias. A partir de una serie de preceptos promulgados por los emperadores romanos y los monarcas visigodos, mediante los diversos documentos jurídicos que crearon durante la Antigüedad Tardía, analizamos, también, como concibieron su organización políticomilitar. Por tanto, nuestra investigación posee una conducción analítica que está marcada por una retrospectiva que afecta tanto a los aspectos relativos a la política exterior como a los elementos constituyentes de la política interna del reino. Para llevar a cabo esta investigación, utilizamos los presupuestos teórico-metodológicos adjuntos al concepto de Antigüedad Tardía. Estando dicho concepto fundamentado en una idea de larga duración, éste ha resultado fundamental al ajustarse a los propósitos de nuestra investigación, ya que nos ha permitido prestar atención a toda una serie de rasgos característicos de un pasado específico, pero que permanecieron en el ámbito tardo-antiguo, lo que se ha constituido como eje de nuestro análisis. Comprobando la percepción de que la Historia está compuesta tanto por rupturas como por permanencias.
Em nossa dissertação, analisamos o quadro das relações político-militares operadas pelos visigodos frente aos diversos núcleos políticos com os quais travaram contato durante a Antiguidade Tardia. Demos ênfase, especialmente, à natureza dos conflitos que, inevitavelmente, irromperam do complexo quadro de tensões, conflitos e negociações que se estabeleceram entre tais núcleos. A partir de uma série de preceitos promulgados pelos imperadores romanos e monarcas visigodos, nos diversos documentos jurídicos que produziram durante a Antiguidade Tardia, analisamos, também, como conceberam sua organização político-militar. Portanto, nossa pesquisa possui uma condução analítica marcada por um olhar voltado tanto aos aspectos relativos à política externa quanto aos elementos constituintes da política interna do regnum. Para efetuarmos esta investigação, utilizamos os pressupostos teórico-metodológicos fornecidos pelo conceito de Antiguidade Tardia. Estando esse conceito calcado numa ideia de longa duração, ele foi um importante sustentáculo profundamente afinado aos propósitos de nossa pesquisa, uma vez que nos permitiu atentar para uma série de aspectos característicos de um passado específico, mas que acabaram permanecendo na paisagem tardo-antiga, o que se constituiu como centro de toda a nossa análise. Comprovando a percepção de que a História é composta tanto por rupturas quanto por permanências.

Abstract:
Erik Satie fut toujours considéré comme un personnage énigmatique dans le monde musical français au tournant du siècle dernier. Sa personnalité marginale et ses œuvres dépouillées aux titres étranges ont maintes fois suscité questionnements et polémique. En 1917, Erik Satie écrivit une œuvre qui ne ressembla aucunement au répertoire antérieur du compositeur. Socrate, qui fut représenté publiquement pour la première fois en janvier 1920 à la Société Nationale de Paris, laissa le public et la critique perplexe et mitigé. Qu’avait donc de si particulier cette œuvre qui, d’un côté, passa pour une blague mais qui, pour certains dont le compositeur lui-même, fut considérée comme une manifestation pure de sagesse et de sincérité ? Socrate fut conçu au même moment où Satie entretenait des liens étroits avec le monde cubiste. Pablo Picasso et Georges Braque furent désormais les maîtres d’un courant artistique qui allait révolutionner le monde artistique. De concert avec les valeurs avant-gardistes prônées par Erik Satie, les cubistes cherchèrent à bousculer les attentes du public en modifiant l’approche visuelle de manière à stimuler les différentes perceptions sensorielles. Avec le ballet Parade, représenté en mai 1917, le compositeur collabora avec Picasso et ceci eût grandement influencé son style musical puisqu’il employa des techniques se rapprochant grandement du cubisme. Comme le soutient Daniel Albright, Satie trouva dans le cubisme son analogue artistique. Selon moi, outre Parade, Erik Satie bénéficiera de l’esthétique cubiste pour développer son œuvre Socrate. Cette thèse se concentre sur la signification de l’œuvre Socrate, plus particulièrement comment celle-ci pourrait représenter un autoportrait d’Erik Satie. De surcroît, elle examine comment cette représentation est camouflée derrière des méthodes cubistes traduites musicalement. La thèse s’appuie sur une littérature variée portant sur divers sujets relatant Socrate, dont la biographie du compositeur et sa relation avec des réseaux artistiques, intellectuels et sociaux. Cette thèse est la première étude d’envergure à suggérer une possibilité d’autoportrait cubiste musical puisque peu d’auteurs se sont attardés à résoudre cette problématique. Cette thèse décrit comment Socrate est une manifestation personnelle de sincérité et d’humilité d’un compositeur qui, persécuté tout au long de sa vie, se dévoila aux yeux de tous par le recours à cette figure emblématique de l’histoire : Socrate.

I den här uppsatsen analyseras Henryk Wieniawskis violinkonsert i d-moll, Op. 22, sats 1. Syftet med studien är en djupdykning i satsens grundstruktur: funktionsanalys, formanalys, motivanalys, sonatform samt en beskrivning av min instuderingsprocess. Jag guidar läsaren genom verket och kommenterar parallellt mina konstnärliga val. The Satin Slipper has been received alternately as a Dada work, a Baroque drama or a‘pièce à clé’, and studying both its first production and its reception allows one to graspbetter Claudel’s relationships with his days. In this work, Claudel adds up together theartistic legacy of his questioning the positivist society of his youth and gives thenarrative of his poetic vocation, which is rooted in the Baudelairean and Mallarméanthoughts on modernity. Claudel delivers his aesthetic manifesto through the primacy ofthe pictural paradigm and makes the reader establish a dialogue with the meaning of thetext, and all this makes him meet the concerns of the artists of his generation. Theplaywright’s originality lies in his resorting to the image to make his work into an exvoto that traces the itinerary of his conversion, as the Thomistic inspiration drives himto favour the image, in God’s plan at work in the play. Ultimately, the work discloses itscloseness to modern art through the use of devices and forms that are proper to modernart, such as collages and montages, or that were rediscovered by modernity, like theimprint or the planeness, that Claudel uses in a polysemous and dialectical way. Abstract:

Aim: The aim of this essay is to study the communication strategy that the company SATS developed before taking over the company e2. The following questions are to be answered: - what was the planned communication strategy before taking over the company e2? - did SATS follow their original plan when implementing this strategy? – Which strengths and weaknesses of the communication strategy can be identified based on opinions of the employees?

Material/Method: Together with literature and document studies, a qualitative method has been used and seven personal interviews have been conducted. One informant was selected due to professional position; the other six respondents were former employees of the affected company e2.

Main results: The main results from the study show that the company SATS did in fact follow their plan very accurately with only some minor changes such as an earlier started education program and exclusion of an initially planned evaluation activity. Communication about the takeover of e2 to employees was quick and clear. This can be seen as strength of the strategy. The employees were positive to all of the activities that involved personal contact and face to face meetings. However the employees were negative to the limited possibilities for contribution of opinions and also to the lack of a thorough evaluation of the communication activities.

Sais de diazônio são um classe de compostos amplamente usados em química orgânica. Sua aplicação abrange uma gama de sínteses desde corantes até reações de hetero-acoplamento para produção de fármacos, mas pouco é conhecido de sua redução eletroquímica para fins sintéticos. As metodologias empregadas na redução de sais de diazônio geralmente envolvem o uso de metais ou compostos capazes de transferir elétrons como Pd, Cu ou tetratiafulvaleno. Neste trabalho é descrita a redução eletroquímica de dois sais de diazônio: tetrafluoroborato de 2-(2-propen-1-ilóxi)benzenodiazônio (1) e tetrafluoroborato de 2-(2-propen-1-iltio)benzenodiazônio (2) usando três eletrodos: Pt, Hg e pó de grafite. Quando foi feita a eletrólise de (1) utilizando cátodo de Hg vários produtos foram formados envolvendo uma reação de ciclização intramolecular, porém não conseguimos separá-los pelos métodos cromatográficos. A eletrólise de (2) em condições experimentais similares conduziu a uma mistura complexa de produtos provavelmente devido a uma interação do Hg com o átomo de enxofre do substrato e seus produtos de redução. Usando o cátodo de Pt e sal (1) a reação não foi eficiente pois ocorria uma queda brusca da corrente, provavelmente devido ao bloqueio da superfície do eletrodo. Concernente ao eletrodo de pó de grafite, apenas alguns experimentos preliminares foram feitos, portanto uma análise de seu desemprenho é prematura.
Diazonium salts are a class of compounds largely used in organic synthesis. Their application cover a broad range from dye syntheses to hetero-coupling reactions for production of medical drugs, but little is known about their electrochemical reduction and its possible use in synthesis. Metodologies employed for their reduction generally involve metals or compounds capable to perform an electron transfer like Pd, Cu or tetrathiafulvalene. We describe the electrochemical reduction studies of two diazonium salts: 2-(-2-propen-1-yloxi)benzenediazonuim (1) and 2-(2-propen-1-ylthio)benzenediazonuim (2) using three electrodes: Pt, Hg and graphite powder. When (1), was electrolyzed using a Hg cathode several products were formed involving an intramolecular cyclization reaction, but we were unable to separate them by chromatographic methods. The electrolyses of (2) under similar experimental conditions gave a complex mixture of products probably due to an interaction of Hg with sulfur of the substrate and the reduction products. Using a Pt cathode and salt (1) the reduction did not proceed efficiently because the current decreased rapidly probably due to a blockage of the electrode surface. Concerning the graphite powder electrode only some preliminary experiments were made, therefore an evaluation of its performance is premature.

When is it acceptable to make fun of religion, and when does it become disrespectful? On January 7, 2015, the headquarters of the French satirical news paper Charlie Hebdo was subjected to a terrorist attack that claimed the lives of 12 staff members, due to the publishing of caricatures picturing the prophet Muhammed. The reactions that followed the attack circled around two perspectives; the importance of freedom of expression and the obligation to show respect for certain institutions and traditions in society. How come the caricatures can elicit such completely different reactions? This is the question that this thesis uses as a starting point for the examination of the subject caricatures and satire. The thesis examines caricatures and satire from a rhetorical perspective. It distinguishes four rhetorical aspects of caricature, and discusses if these rhetorical aspects can be what makes the difference regarding how provocative a drawing is considered. The thesis then uses the four rhetorical aspects found, to analyze two caricatures from the French satiric magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Sa singularité a quelque chose de délibéré qui se concrétise dans ses choix harmoniques et formels. Les références qu'il affiche sont situées dans un passé lointain (le Moyen Age), dans un ailleurs porteur d'harmonies nouvelles (l'Orient), ou au contraire dans la trivialité des musiques populaires à la mode. Ces apports lui permettent de contourner aussi bien l'académisme que la domination du modernisme wagnérien. Sur le plan de l'écriture, cet isolement stylistique conduit Satie à recourir aux contraintes, voire à forger de véritables systèmes d'écriture. Quant à la forme, privée des ressources du développement, elle tend à privilégier deux outils qui sont analysés ici de manière détaillée : la répétition et la segmentation. I denna uppsats analyseras fyra olika artiklar från gymkedjan SATS egen tidning, SATS Magazine. Syftet är att undersöka vilken modelläsare som konstrueras. Modelläsaren är den ideala läsaren som skribenten tillägnar texten till, det är den identitet som läsaren blir erbjuden i en text och som skribenten föreställer sig. Med hjälp av den systemisk-funktionella grammatiken samt kritisk diskursanalys är syftet att med en kvalitativ metod undersöka vilka krav gällande träning som ställs på modelläsaren, och hur detta bidrar till hur modelläsaren konstrueras. Den interpersonella betydelsen kommer att beröra språkhandlingar, modalitet, tilltal och värdeladdade ord. Den ideationella analysen är något avgränsad och kommer endast att fokusera på vilka ideationella processer som förekommer i texterna.  Den interpersonella analysen visar att kravställandet på modelläsaren är högt men att det realiseras genom råd. Läsaren görs delaktig i texten vilket skapar närhet mellan avsändaren och läsaren. Den ideationella analysen visar att det främst förekommer materiella och relationella processer där de materiella visar att modelläsaren är aktiv och positivt inställd till att träna, medan de relationella processerna i flera fall används för att realisera uppmaningar. Diskursanalysen visar att artiklarna förutom hälso- och träningsdiskurser även innehåller en medicinsk samt en kommersiell diskurs.

O espinélio MgAl2O4 é utilizado prioritariamente na indústria de refratários. Atualmente há várias técnicas de síntese, visto que não é encontrado na natureza. A técnica de sais fundidos apresenta grande potencial para otimização e redução do custo energético na produção deste óxido. Este trabalho teve como objetivo o desenvolvimento da técnica de síntese via sais fundidos para obtenção do espinélio MgAl2O4, e a caracterização do pó produzido via diferentes técnicas. A dissertação explora as variáveis da produção do espinélio a partir de Al2O3 e MgO em KCl, e também alternando o sal para MgCl2 e o eutético KCl-MgCl2. As seguintes alterações foram testadas para verificar o resultado no pó produzido: redução da temperatura para 1150°C, aumento do MgO nos precursores em 10% e 30%, redução da granulometria da Al2O3 precursores para 0,60 μm, variação da razão sal/precursor (S/P) para 1:1 e 9:1. Foi testado o sal MgCl2 nas proporções de precursores estequiométrica, -50% de MgO e -100% de MgO. Por fim, o sal KCl-MgCl2 na razão eutética foi testado. Para caracterização do pó foram utilizadas as técnica de análise cristalográfica por difração de raios X (DRX) e pela técnica de RAMAN, granulometria por dispersão a laser (GDL), microestrutura por microscopia eletrônica por varredura (MEV) e análise de cristalitos por mircroscopia eletrônica de transmissão (MET). Os pós produzidos apresentaram as fases MgAl2O4, Al2O3 e MgO. A redução de temperatura reduziu a quantidade de espinélio em pequena proporção, a alteração de estequiometria dos precursores no sal KCl reduziu a quantidade de Al2O3 em um primeiro momento e também sobrou MgO na reação para um aumento maior de MgO. A redução de granulometria da Al2O3 propiciou aumento da proporção de espinélio na reação. A proporção S/P 1:1 não mostrou alteração, contudo para 9:1 houve sedimentação e um efeito de diluição/precipitação. Para o sal MgCl2, houve precipitação de MgO a partir do sal, alterando o perfil granulométrico dos pós e as fases obtidas: MgO e MgAl2O4. A redução de MgO aumentou a conversão para MgAl2O4, reduzindo também a granulometria. O sal na proporção eutética apresentou boa conversão de espinélio e pouco aumento de granulometria.
The MgAl2O4 spinel is mainly applied at the refractory industry. There are many techniques to produce that oxide, since it is not found in the nature. The molten salts technique shows potencial energy savings and cost reduction to produce spinel. This work aimed at the development of the molten salts synthesis technique to obtain the MgAl2O4 spinel, and characterization of the powder produced via different techniques. The dissertation explores the variables of production of spinel from Al2O3 and MgO in KCl, and also alternating salt to MgCl2 and KCl-MgCl2 eutectic. The following changes were tested to verify the result of the powder produced: reducing the temperature to 1150 ° C, an increase in the MgO precursor at 10% and 30% reduction in particle size of the Al2O3 precursor to 0.60 micrometres variation ratio of salt / precursor (S / P) to 1: 1 and 9: 1. MgCl2 salt was tested in the stoichiometric proportion of precursors, -50% of MgO and -100% MgO. Finally, the KCl-MgCl2 salt eutectic ratio was tested. For characterization of the powder was used the crystallographic analysis technique of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and RAMAN technique, laser scattering for particle size analisys, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and crystallite analysis by transmission electron mircroscopy (TEM). The powders produced presented the MgAl2O4 phase, Al2O3 and MgO. The reduction in temperature reduced the amount of spinel in small proportion, the stoichiometry change of the precursors in the KCl salt reduced the amount of Al2O3 at first and also left MgO in reaction to a greater increase of MgO. The reduction of the Al2O3 particle size resulted in an increase in the proportion of the spinel reaction. The ratio S/P 1: 1 showed no change, however to 9: 1 was sedimentation and dilution / precipitation effect. To MgCl2 salt, there was precipitation of MgO from the salt, changing the physical profile of the powder and the obtained phases: MgO and MgAl2O4. The reduction of MgO increased the conversion MgAl2O4, by reducing the grain size. The salt in the proportion eutectic showed good conversion spinel and little increase in particle size.

Satie was the first French composer to completely reject the musical tradition of Romanticism in all its forms: technically, aesthetically and ideologically. The methods through which Satie attacked tradition were highly unorthodox and often presented in an aphoristic and humorous fashion, an approach that caused his pivotal role in the emergence of the early French avant-garde to be neglected. The primary research question that informs this thesis asks what were the mechanisms by which Satie was consistently excluded from the canon during his public career (1911-1925)? Within a primary framework of canon theory, this reception study challenges the dominance of the canon on discourses surrounding Satie during his lifetime and lays the foundations for a reassessment of his role as an avatar of French modernism. This study addresses the canon in explicit terms and challenges canonic influence over methodology, terminology and ideology in musical discourse. In doing so many traditional beliefs and images concerning Satie are re-examined, for example: that analyses of his music are a futile pursuit as the musical ideas were considered more important than the music itself. The historicity of various images of Satie that collectively formed his public identity in the press are examined and, where necessary, re-evaluated. Through an analysis of a wide range of primary sources, including concert programmes and critical reviews, this research addresses the themes that predominate in Satie’s reception and impacted significantly on his reputation: professionalism, humour, gender, nationalism, class politics and religion. Particular attention is given to the role of humour and various methods are suggested for directly dealing with the comic in Satie’s music. The canonic implications of programming practices and Satie’s involvement in inter-art events are also explored. Through a direct confrontation of the canon, an alternative historiographic model for this period of French musical history is proposed.

Länge har jag intresserat mig för skapandet av musik, kanske för att jag betraktar mig själv som en musikalisk improvisatör. I detta arbete utforskar jag därför hur jag arbetar med komposition, vilka metoder jag använder, vilka andra metoder som finns och vilka av dem jag kan bredda mig med. Målet är att vid genomfört arbete ha en översikt av min skapandeprocess, för att själv kunna vidareutveckla den, samtidigt som jag hoppas kunna hjälpa läsaren att, genom igenkänning, se sin egen process i nytt ljus.   I detta arbete analyseras videoupptagningar och loggboksinlägg ur ett sociokulturellt perspektiv, vilket innebär att jag betraktar verktyg som något som både finns i intellektet och i den fysiska världen. Jag har även erfarit hur tätt sammanbundna dessa är. Dessutom influerar de resultatet, vilket gör valet av verktyg viktigt. Centralt här är alltså lärandeprocessen, det musikaliska skapandet samt den sociokulturella verktygslådan.
For a long time, I have been interested in composing, possibly because I am an improvising musician. In this paper, I bring up the subject of my work in this field, what methods I use, what others I know of and which ones I could use to improve my results. The goal was to get an overview of my creative process, so that I may develop farther, whilst simultaneously help the reader to recognize his or her own methods and thusly see them in a new light.   I have analysed video and logs of my work from a sociocultural perspective, which means I have focused on the tools I use as something both of the mind and of the physical world. I have also seen just how closely these two are bound to one another. They also influence the results, which makes choosing your tools important. The main focus is the process of learning, the creation of music and the sociocultural tool kit.

Denna undersöknings syfte är att redogöra för den finlandssvenska satirens skildring av språkstriden i Finland under mellankrigstiden. Huvudkällan för detta ändamål är skämttidningen Garm som innehar en unik position i den finska skämtpressens historia. Genom att analysera tidskriftens årgångar från perioderna 1927-1931 och 1934-1939 besvaras frågan: ”Hur representeras språkstriden i relation till finlandssvensken?”. Det läggs vikt på vilken typ av samtidsfrågor som uttryckligen är relaterade till aktuella händelser rörande språkstriden, hur äktfinskheten och finsk nationalism representeras och hur språkliga skillnader skildras. Undersökningens resultat visar att Garm anser att språkstriden, i och med förträngningen och begränsningen av det svenska språket, var ett hot för samhällets enighet. I både nationellt och internationellt hänseende skulle det finska samhället splittras och mer eller mindre gå under.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate three models of family therapy: Bowen Theory, Haley's Strategic Family Therapy, and the Satir Process Model. The question that was explored concerned what family therapy approaches achieve what types of engagement, dropout, completion, satisfaction with treatment, locus of control, and family functioning outcomes with what kinds of delinquent families. Further, what effect do traditional court services have on a similar sample of delinquent youths and their families.;A non-equivalent, quasi-experimental design with pre and posttest treated (n = 188) and comparison (n = 61) groups was employed. Independent variables included the treatment interventions (Bowen, Haley, Satir, and comparison group). The dependent variables included seven criterion variables of clinical engagement, clinical dropout, completion, satisfaction with treatment, locus of control, and family functioning.;The Bowen and Satir groups engaged significantly more families than the Haley group. The Satir group had fewer premature terminations than the Haley and Bowen treatment groups. There were no significant differences between the Haley and Bowen Dropout samples.;The Satir group completed with the highest number of families, followed by the comparison group, the Bowen completed sample, and the Haley treatment group.;The Rotter Internal-External Locus of Control resulted in a significant effect for Time. Thus, at the end of treatment, parents had lower mean scores, indicating a move toward being more internally directed.;The Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales resulted in some significant findings, specifically: Identified Clients' Cohesion subscale (Group effect); Mothers' Social Desirability (Group effect); Fathers' Social Desirability (Group effect); and Identified Clients' Social Desirability (Group and Time effect).;Testing indicated that families were more satisfied with the Satir Process Model than Bowen Theory.;In general, results indicated that all family members were more satisfied with the Satir Process Model therapists, than with the Bowen and Haley clinicians.;Families were dissatisfied with the some aspects of the treatment they received in particular: Bowen Theory: exclusion of the Identified Client from therapy; Strategic Family Therapy: unknown observers on the other side of mirror engendered a perception of vulnerability and lack of confidence in the therapist; Satir Process Model: the brevity of treatment within the confines of the research project. Abstract:
Quando o tetrafluoroborato de N-(α-carbometoximetil)-2,4,6-trifenilpiridínio (Ia) foi tratado com hidróxido de potássio em etanol, resultou uma betaína que, ao ser aquecida na presença de benzaldeído ou p-clorobenzaldeído, não produziu a esperada oxazolidina IIa. Em lugar desta 1,2-di-hidropiridina, formou-se um sal cujo cátion correspondia à estrutura de um N-metil-2,4,6-trifenilpiridínio (III). Este composto resultaria da protonação da ilida intermediária, formada pela descarboxilação da betaína. Porém, quando o mesmo tipo de reação foi efetuada com o derivado α-metilado Ib, o espectro de RMN de H do produto bruto indicou a formação da di-hidropiridina (IIb), na forma de 4 estereoisômeros. A oxazolidina IIa, como um isômero largamente majoritário, pôde ser obtida pela reação do tetrafluoroborato de N-metil-2,4,6-trifenilpiridínio (III) com p-clorobenzaldeído, na presença de uma solução diluída de álcali. Esta oxazolidina era bastante instável e não pode ser purificada, sendo submetida na forma bruta à reação de Diels-Alder com a N-metil-maleimida. Esta reação conduziu a dois adutos isoméricos (IV e V). Embora o aduto majoritário (V) fosse estável em solução de deutero-clorofórmio, o aduto minoritário (IV), na presença desse solvente e à temperatura ambiente, isomerizava-se após algumas horas. A estrutura dos três adutos foi determinada por experimentos de RMN de H (NOESY e NOE 1D seletivo). A adição de um pequeno volume de solução diluída de ácido clorídrico aos compostos IV e V, dissolvidos em acetonitrila e à temperatura ambiente, resultou na isomerização catalítica desses adutos. Porém, quando esta reação de protonação foi efetuada sob refluxo de acetonitrila, formaram-se dois produtos (VI e VII), cuja estrutura era compatível com ocorrência de uma reação de retro-aza Diels-Alder. Finalmente, foi estudado o equilíbrio conformacional de dois novos sais de 2,4,6-trifenil- piridínio, e os resultados foram comparados com aqueles obtidos para os sais análogos 2,4,6-trimetil-substituídos.
When the tetrafluoroborate of N-(α-carbomethoxymethyl)-2,4,6-triphenylpridinium (Ia) was submitted to alkaline hydrolysis followed by decarboxylation upon heating, the resulting betaine failed to undergo the aldol addition reaction with aromatic aldehydes leading, in lieu of the expected oxazolidine (IIa),a salt bearing the cation N-methyl-2,4,6-triphenylpyridinium (III), as a result of the easy protonation of the intermediate ylide. However, for the corresponding a-methylated salt (Ib), the formation of four stereoisomeric 1,2- dihydropiridines was confirmed by inspection of the H NMR of the crude product. As an alternative to this method for obtaining IIa, a mixture of III and p-chlorobenzaldehyde was stirred at room temperature for several hours, in the presence of a diluted aqueous alkali. The resulting 1,2-dihidropyridine (IIa) was rather unstable precluding its isolation from the crude product mixture, and was submitted, without further purification, to the Diels-Alder reaction with Nmethylmaleimide, leading to two diastereomeric isoquinuclidines (IV) and (V). Although the major isomer showed to be stable in a deuterochloroform solution, the minor isomer (IV) underwent a spontaneous isomerization, upon standing in such solvent at room temperature. The stereochemical features of these three aducts could be accessed by NOESY and 1D NOE selective H NMR experiments. By treating a solution of adducts IV and V in acetonitrile with a small volume of aqueous HCl, at room temperature, an acid catalyzed isomerization took place. However, when the protonation reaction of the major diastereoisomer (V) was performed in acetonitrile at the reflux temperature, two products (VI and VII) were isolated, highlighting the occurrence of a retro-aza Diels Alder reaction. Finally, the conformation equilibria for two new 2,4,6-triphenyl- pyridinium salts was investigated. Results were correlated with previous ones referring to analogous 2,4,6-trimethyl- salts.

A Região Nordeste do Brasil é caracterizada por clima semiárido, sendo os volumes precipitados normalmente inferiores à evaporação e, tornando o uso da irrigação imprescindível para uma produção agrícola sustentável, entretanto, o manejo inadequado da irrigação atrelado às condições locais, tem favorecido os processos de salinização e sodificação de solos, promovendo a degradação e o abandono de extensas áreas anteriormente produtivas. Entre as áreas afetadas por sais nessa região, destaca-se o Perímetro Irrigado de São Gonçalo - PB em situação de degradação de solos com problemas de sais, isso ensejou a propositura de estudar métodos e técnicas visando o melhoramento das características físicas e químicas do solo. O experimento foi instalado em área previamente identificada como possuidora de solo salino-sódico no Perímetro Irrigado de São Gonçalo, e para a recuperação fez-se da aplicação dos métodos e da técnica da fitorremediação com Erva-Sal (Atriplex numulária L.), Capim-pé-de-galinha (Eleusine indica L.), Salsa - Brava (Ipomoea asarifolia L.) e Gesso agrícola. A pesquisa constou de oito tratamentos, com quatro repetições, os tratamentos foram submetidos a um delineamento em blocos casualizados (DBC), com os seguintes tratamentos: i) cultivo de atriplex; ii) cultivo de capim-pé-galinha, iii) cultivo de salsa, iv) solo com gesso; v)aplicação de gesso agrícola associado ao cultivo de atriplex; vi)aplicação de gesso agrícola associado ao cultivo de capim pé-de-galinha; vii)aplicação de gesso agrícola associado ao cultivo de salsa e viii) solo sem manejo (testemunha), numa área total de 62 m² conduzido em campo, em parcelas de 1,40 x 1,40 m. Com esse estudo pretende-se recuperar solo afetados por sais, utilizando um método alternativo, mais viável economicamente e sustentável através de plantas capazes de extrair os sais em excesso do solo.
Brazil's Northeast region is characterized by semi-arid climate, and the precipitated volumes usually lower than the evaporation and, making use of vital irrigation for sustainable agricultural production, however, inadequate irrigation management linked to local conditions, has favored processes salinization and sodification soils, promoting the degradation and abandonment of extensive formerly productive areas. Among the areas affected by salts in this region, we highlight the Irrigated Perimeter of São Gonçalo - PB in soil degradation situation with salt problems and this gave rise to the filing of study methods and techniques aimed at improving the physical and chemical characteristics ground. The experiment was installed in previously identified area as saline-sodic soil possessed in the Irrigated Perimeter of São Gonçalo, and the recovery was made of the application of methods and phytoremediation technique with herb-salt (Atriplex moneywort L.), grass crow's foot bath (Eleusine indica L.), Salsa - Brava (Ipomoea asarifolia L.) and Agricultural Gypsum. The survey consisted of eight treatments, with four replications, the treatments were subjected to a randomized block design (RBD), with the following treatments: i) atriplex cultivation; ii) grass-foot-chicken farming, iii) salsa culture, iv) soil with gypsum; v) application of gypsum associated with atriplex cultivation; vi) application of gypsum associated with grass growing chicken's foot; vii) application of gypsum associated with the parsley cultivation and viii) soil without management (control), a total area of 62 m² conducted under field conditions in portions of 1.40 x 1.40 m. With this study we intend to recover salt affected soil, using an alternative method more economically viable and sustainable through plants capable of extracting soil excess salts.

Abstract:
In autumn of 2010 the phenomenon of ‘Greek crisis’ was aggressively developed to a new experience of Greece. As a theatre practitioner from Athens, the specific historical time pushed me to question big-scale narratives of identity, home and belonging-ness. I relocated my training outdoors. My aim was to create a site-specific performance process that investigates place as a psychophysical experience and the ways through which it integrates with the cultural practices embedded in situ. The thesis builds around a Geographical/Buddhist framework where a cultural landscape epistemology outlined by Mitch Rose and John Wylie (2006) is realised through the practice of samatha vipashyana. The accounts of Rose and Wylie organise the examination of space as a body-landscape interrelationship. The Buddhist notion of mindfulness (sati) structures the investigation of the experience in space through theatre and dance disciplines in situ. The Buddhist concept of selflessness (anatta) permeates the performance practice in situ as a discipline of presence. Designated as Geopoetics, the practice of thesis applies meditation practices of breathing and walking to explore site through movement, feeling and activity. It further extends such a process via the disciplines of Somatics, Grotowski-based actor training and Dilley’s ‘dance.art.lab’. It employs the notions of ‘story’ from the Six Viewpoints system and ‘living myth’ of Anna Halprin to formulate a devising process of site-specific performance as an enactment of interrelationship between subject(s) and space. Geopoetics creates experiential containers within which the participant/ watcher is enabled to contemplate and re-examine her political, perceptual and emotional present. Based on its methodology of mindfulness (sati) notions of ‘identity’, ‘home’ and ‘sense of belonging’ are seen as individual or collective modes of attachment which altogether co-formulate the event of landscape. The practice of Geopoetics suggests an inquiry of place through the body for site-specific devisers and performers. It also relates to the discipline of architects, geographers and planners as a practice which investigates space’s contextual paradoxes and dynamics through the body.

This report presents and discusses proofs of the Malgrange-Ehrenpreis theorem, which states that every non-zero linear partial differential operator with constant coefficients has a fundamental solution. The main topic is explicit formulae, and more specifically, how they can be used to prove the theorem. Two different formulas will be considered in detail and the aim is to provide a fundamental and elementary description of how to prove the Malgrange-Ehrenpreis theorem using those formulas. In addition to the proofs, an example of how to use one of the formulas for the Cauchy-Riemann operator is shown. Finally, the report also contains a chapter discussing a few different notable methods of proof and their historical signifance.

Resumo: O seguinte trabalho tem por objetivo abordar a natureza da música humorística em Erik Satie, sua aplicação, função e caráter estético. Para isto, através de sua obra musical, seus escritos, estudos acadêmicos realizados sobre o compositor, relatos e críticas musicais da época, buscou-se, inicialmente, reconstruir a lógica pessoal e composicional do compositor, ambas inerentes. Em seguida, a fim de tornar possível uma análise adequada do humor em suas obras, procurou-se, através da reflexão existente sobre o tema no âmbito da filosofia, atribuir uma definição clara e prática da natureza do humor, do riso, assim como, determinar a gênese de sua má reputação. Abstract: The following work aims to approach the nature of Erik Satie‟s humorous music, its application, role played and aesthetical disposition. In order to do this, we sought, initially, through his musical works, writings, academical studies about the composer, reports and musical criticism at the time, to rebuild his personal and compositional logic, both inherent. Thereafter, for the purpose of making an appropriated analysis of humor in his works, we searched, through the existing reflection on the subject in the field of philosophy, to ascribe a clear and practical definition upon the nature of humor, laughter, as well as to determine the genesis of its bad reputation. Thus, based on the concept of humor and in musicological texts about humorous music, we developed a technical apparatus of recognition and application of humor in the musical‟s scope. With that theoretical referential in hands, it was made possible an analysis of the applicat ion and function of humor in fifteen groups of humorous pieces written by the composer: Gnossiennes; Pièces Froides; Troix Morceaux en forme de Poire; Préludes Flasques (Pour un Chien); Véritables Préludes Flasques (Pour un Chien); Descriptions Automatiques; Croquis et Agaceries d‟un Gros Bonhomme en Bois; Embryons Desséchés; Chapitres Tournés en Tous Sens; Vieux Sequins et Vieilles Curaisses; Choses Vues à droite et à gauche; Heures Séculaires et Instantanées; Trois Valses distinguées de précieux dégoûté; Avant-dernières Pensées; and Sonatine Bureaucratique. Por fim, através de todo o trabalho desenvolvido, averiguou-se a hipótese inicial, na qual a obra de Satie, em função do eleito aspecto do humor, entre outros, é, de fato, um experimentalismo avant la lettre em seu caráter estético.

Thereafter, for the purpose of making an appropriated analysis of humor in his works, we searched, through the existing reflection on the subject in the field of philosophy, to ascribe a clear and practical definition upon the nature of humor, laughter, as well as to determine the genesis of its bad reputation. Thus, based on the concept of humor and in musicological texts about humorous music, we developed a technical apparatus of recognition and application of humor in the musical‟s scope. With that theoretical referential in hands, it was made possible an analysis of the application and function of humor in fifteen groups of humorous pieces written by the composer: Gnossiennes; Pièces Froides; Troix Morceaux en forme de Poire; Préludes Flasques (Pour un Chien); Véritables Préludes Flasques (Pour un Chien); Descriptions Automatiques; Croquis et Agaceries d‟un Gros Bonhomme en Bois; Embryons Desséchés; Chapitres Tournés en Tous Sens; Vieux Sequins et Vieilles Curaisses; Choses Vues à droite et à gauche; Heures Séculaires et Instantanées; Trois Valses distinguées de précieux dégoûté; Avant-dernières Pensées; and Sonatine Bureaucratique. Subsequently, through humorous articles published by Satie and critics published on the composer, we made a comparative analysis of the countercriticism role played by Erik Satie‟s humor against the canon and tradition. Thus, we could demystify the superficial and innocuous character and the idea of eccentricity, amateurism and insanity which trespass his humorous practice, the musical and textual as well. Last, but not least, throughout all the work developed, we verified the initial hypothesis in which Satie‟s oeuvre, due to the elected aspect of humor, among others, is, indeed, an experimentalism avant la lettre in its aesthetical disposition.

En partant des indications de jeu sur les premières partitions de Satie, nous pouvons relever en quoi elles répliquent à l'ambiance musicale de l'époque et à certains de ses héritages esthétiques. Pour mieux mesurer la charge de ces indications et à la suite du travail de Françoise Escal sur la notion de «paratexte » dans le champ éditorial de la musique, nous prenons en considération toutes les mentions verbales des partitions pour piano de Satie et relevons les aspects sous lesquels elles saturent l'héritage romantique d'une part, les pratiques éditoriales qui lui sont contemporaines d'autre part. En examinant comment la relation entre le compositeur et l'interprète est ainsi reconfigurée, nous envisageons la projection de la partition dans un espace éditorial élargi. Ainsi, nous cherchons à traiter des mentions verbales sur les partitions de Satie solidairement au positionnement social du compositeur et aux orientations esthétiques de sa musique. En cherchant des communautés de posture et de fond entre les lettres de Satie et les mentions verbales, nous montrons que le changement de morphologie de la partition permet d'ouvrir un éclairage sur ses modalités de sortie du romantisme et son articulation avec les innovations poétiques d'Apollinaire et Cendrars. C’est en scrutant les subtilités énonciatives qui s'y produisent spécifiquement que nous pouvons produire une image plus nuancée du compositeur dans ses textes et rafraîchir les tenants de sa réputation d'ironiste. Pour ce faire, nous mobilisons une bibliographie aussi bien philosophique (Platon, Canetti, Jankélévitch, Foucault), qu'artistique (Chopin, Schumann, Picasso), que sémiologique (Barthes, Genette)
Based on the play instructions of the first scores by Satie, we can identify how they replicate the musical atmosphere of the period and some of his aesthetic heritage. To better quatify the content of following the work of Françoise Escal on the concept of "paratext" in the editorial field of music, we consider all verbal notes of piano scores by Satie and find aspects under which they saturate the romantic heritage' of one hand, the editorial practices that are contemporary to the other. By examining how the relationship between composer and player is so reconfigured, we consider the projection of the score in an editorial space expanded. Thus, we seek to be about verbal notes on scores by Satie jointly social positioning of the composer and aesthetic trends of his music. Seeking communities in posture and substance between the letters of Satie and verbal notes, we show that the change of morphology of the score broadens on its exit modalities of Romanticism and its articulation with the poetic innovations of Apollinaire and Cendrars. It is scrutinizing the enunciative subtleties which occur specifically that we can produce a more nuances picture of the composer in his lyrics and refresh the issues of his reputation as ironist. To do this, we draw a bibliography as well philosophical (Platon, Canetti, Jankélévitch, Foucault), as artistic (Chopin, Shumann, Picasso), as semiotic(Barthes, Genette)

Design har gått från att beröra produktestetik till att idag innefatta ett tillvägagångsätt samt en resurs vid strategisk affärsstyrning. Beroende på företags erfarenhet och kunskapsnivå betraktas och nyttjas design på olika nivåer i en verksamhet. Sedan 1960-talet har design management kommit att få en erkänd roll inom näringslivet. Däremot existerar fortfarande en spänning mellan design och marknadsföring, som kan försvåra företags vilja att investera i design management. Studiens syfte är att öka förståelsen för hur design management kan fungera som strategisk resurs, genom att uppmärksamma och undersöka vad design har för betydelse i en varumärkesidentitet. Den frågeställning som studien önskar utreda lyder; Vad har design för betydelse för en varumärkesidentitet? Uppsatsförfattarna har utifrån ett hermeneutiskt synsätt genomfört en kvalitativ studie, där en fallstudie motiverats genom triangulering. Betydelsen av design för en varumärkesidentitet har utforskats genom ett studieobjekt; varumärket SATS. Teori och insamling av empiri ha varvats genom ett abduktivt tillvägagångssätt, där intervjuer har genomförts utifrån tre perspektiv; expert-perspektivet, varumärkesperspektivet och varumärkesidentitetsbärarperspektivet. Studiens teoretiska referensram består av identitetsteori och designteori. Teori och empiri har tillsammans med etablerade resonemang inom design management kopplats samman, där Aakers modell, Brand Identity Planning System, har valts ut som central. I en avslutande diskussion binds studien ihop, där uppsatsförfattarna väljer att definiera strategisk design för att kunna belysa studiens slutsats. Studien slutsats är att designs betydelse för en varumärkesidentitet är skapandet av dess helhet och konsekvens genom användarcentrering, tvärdisciplinärt samarbete samt innovativ problemlösning. Design möjliggör för en varumärkesidentitet att förmedla känslomässigt, funktionellt och identifierande värde.
Design that originally only affected products' aesthetics is today known as a key success factor in competitive strategic business management. As a result of the lack of awareness for strategic design capabilities, a broader knowledge for the importance of design management investments is required. The purpose of this essay is therefore to enlighten the potentiality of design management and exploit how design can contribute to the brand identity. The ambition is to be able to answer the question; what significant importance has design to enhance brand identity? From a hermeneutic approach a qualitative method motivated triangulation and abduction. The brand SATS was selected as an investigation objective. The theoretical framework consists of theories of brand identity and strategic design. The main theory is called The Brand Identity Planning System and is in combination with the strategic design theories analysed and presented as the base for the discussion. In conclusion, the authors established a definition for design and found that design has the power to improve the brand identity through a user-oriented perspective, using an interdisciplinary and innovative problem-solving approach. Design can create a consistent brand identity, which along with identification adds superior emotional and functional value.

A quebra da dormência fisiológica de sementes de estilosante (Stylosanthes humilis H.B.K.), leguminosa forrageira de ciclo anual, foi quebrada pelos sais de alumínio, sob pH 3,0, e pelos sais férricos, sob pH 2,5. Sob pH 2,0, ocorreu a quebra da dormência sem o concurso dos sais. O tempo mínimo de exposição das sementes aos sais de alumínio e férricos que proporcionou as maiores porcentagens de germinação foi 6 h para o Al(NO 3 ) 3 , 18 h para o Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 e 24 h para o AlCl 3 e Fe(NO 3 ) 3 . O Fe(NO 3 ) 3 , em pH 2,5, e o Al(NO 3 ) 3 , em pH 3,0, anteciparam o início da germinação em relação ao efeito do pH puro, enquanto os outros sais causaram um atraso no início da germinação. Em placas de Petri, não houve diferença entre as taxas máximas de germinação promovidas pelo pH 2,5 puro e pelos sais de alumínio e férrico. Sob pH(s) 3,0 e 4,0, os sais de alumínio promoveram uma taxa de germinação e um tempo de ocorrência de taxa máxima maiores que os promovidos pelos pH(s) puros, indicando efeito próprio dos sais. A germinação estimulada pelos íons trivalentes foi inibida pelos inibidores da biossíntese de etileno Co 2+ , ácido abscísico e ácido acetil-salicílico, exceto sob pH 2,0. Os efeitos inibitórios dos bloqueadores da biossíntese de etileno foram revertidos pelo ácido 2-cloroetilfosfônico, sugerindo a participação do etileno na germinação. Sementes embebidas em soluções de sais de alumínio, sob pH 3,0 apresentaram um aumento na produção de etileno, em comparação às expostas ao pH puro. Já sob pH 2,5, não houve diferença entre os efeitos causados pelo nitrato férrico e o pH puro, indicando que o efeito foi causado pela condição acídica.
Dormancy of seeds of Townsville stylo (Stylosanthes humilis H.B.K.), an annual tropical forage legume, was broken by the aluminum salts, under pH 3,0, and ferric salts, under pH 2,5. Dormancy was also broken by pH 2,0 solution with no salt, highlighting the role of low pH in the process. Minimum exposure time of seeds to the aluminum and ferric salts to promote the highest germination was 6 h for Al(NO 3 ) 3 , 18 h for Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 and 24 h for AlCl 3 and Fe(NO 3 ) 3 . Ferric nitrate, in pH 2,5, and aluminum nitrate, in pH 3,0, anticipated the onset of germination as compared to pure pH; however, the other salts promoted a delay of germination. Under pH 2,5, the acidic condition sufficed for dormancy breakage of Townsville seeds in Petri dish. In pH(s) 3,0 and 4,0, aluminum salts promoted a germination rate greater than that caused by pure pH(s), indicating an effect of the ion. Germination as stimulated by the trivalent ions was inhibited by the inhibitors of ethylene biosynthesis Co 2 +, abscisic acid and acetyl-salicylic acid, except under pH 2,0. The inhibitory effects of ethylene biosynthesis inhibitors were reverted by 2- chloroethylphosphonic acid. Aluminum salts in pH 3,0 induced a large increase in ethylene production, in comparison to seeds exposed to pure pH 3,0. Under pH 2,5, there was no difference among effects caused by ferric nitrate and pure pH, indicating that the effect was caused solely by acidic condition. In pH 2,5, the dormancy breakage seemed associated to pH, whereas in pH 3,0 the effect seemed caused by aluminum ions.
