Abstract:
“English is the only foreign language taught in Saudi schools as part of the mandatory curriculum and therefore enjoys a relatively high status” (Carfax Educational Projects, 2016, p. 10). The teaching of English as a Foreign Language (EFL/L2) within the basic curriculum of Saudi Arabia commences in the fourth grade. However, in spite of the best efforts of the Saudi Ministry of Education (MoE) to develop English learning in schools, the language proficiency of Saudi high school leavers remains insufficient to carry out even basic interactions, let alone undertake university study through the medium of English (Al-Johani, 2009; Al-Seghayer, 2014; Alhawsawi, 2013; Alrabai, 2016; Khan, 2011; Rajab, 2013). In fact, the recent Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT, 2017) demonstrated an overall average score of 64 of 120 for Saudis who took the TOEFL iBT between January and December 2016. This paper therefore seeks to examine the factors responsible for the low EFL performance of Saudi students on completion of their high school studies. In order to do so, the researcher randomly selected 60 school leavers and 30 teachers who responded to an interview designed to elicit the underlying causes of such poor English proficiency. The results revealed that the reasons fall into a number of discrete categories related to the student, the teacher, the learning environment, and the curriculum.

Abstract:
We investigated the mediating role of product status signaling in the relationship between materialism and product satisfaction of Saudi and Malaysian adults. We performed structural equation modeling to analyze data from 894 Generations X and Y participants in Malaysia and Saudi Arabia, who responded to a self-administered survey. Contrary to previous research findings both from Malaysia, and from North American and other Western-culture samples, there were positive significant direct effects of materialism on product satisfaction for consumers in both countries. The results of the mediating effect (materialistic values → product status signaling → product satisfaction) indicated that, for Saudis, the effect was positive and moderate in strength, whereas for Malaysians, the effect was positive and strong. The overall results showed that product status signaling acted as a partial mediator in the relationship between materialistic values and product satisfaction. On the basis of these results, it is important for marketers to understand that both Malaysian and Saudi consumers—Saudis in particular—tend to rely, and focus, on the symbolic meanings attached to products that will only be successfully communicated if the symbolism in the product is socially and visibly recognized by these consumers. Suggestions for future research are offered.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper explores the main reasons for which progressive Saudis can be optimistic that women will eventually achieve their rightful place in society in general and in the employment sector in particular. A critical analysis is performed of the social, cultural, and religious background to gender inequality as well as of the current state of women’s education and employment. The evidence considered of the everlasting gender discourses in Saudi Arabia includes examples from the girls’ home economics textbook for Grades 7 and 8. This paper confirms that Saudi society is witnessing a growing acknowledgment of the undeniable Scriptural basis for women’s participation in all aspects of public life and an accompanying dilution of the influence of the some conservativeUlamaas enforcers of a narrow and literal interpretation of Islam. This paper also confirms that important institutional and policy changes are underway that are creating new educational and employment opportunities for women. The result is that the deeply entrenched gender issues that has for so long characterized the Saudi education system and society as a whole is being challenged by progressive Islamic principles and by a variety of institutional reforms, among other factors.

Abstract:
AbstractBackground:Political unrest in the Middle East heightens the possibility of catastrophe due to violent conflict and/or terrorist attacks. However, the disaster risk reduction strategy in the Saudi health care system appears to be a reactive approach focused more on flood hazards than other threats. Given the current unstable political situation in its neighboring countries and Saudi Arabia’s key role in providing humanitarian assistance and disaster relief to those affected by internal conflicts and wars, it is essential to develop a framework for training standards related to complex humanitarian disasters to provide the requisite skills and knowledge in a gradual manner, according to local context and international standards. This framework could also support the World Health Organization’s (WHO; Geneva, Switzerland) initiative for establishing a national disaster assistance team in Saudi Arabia.Problem:The main aim of this study is to provide Saudi health care providers with a competencies-based course in Basic Principles of Complex Humanitarian Emergency. Methods:The interactive, competencies-based course in Basic Principles of Complex Humanitarian Emergency was designed by five experts in disaster medicine and humanitarian relief in three stages, accordance to international standards and the local context. The course was piloted over five days at the Officers Club of the Ministry of Interior (MOI; Riyadh, Saudi Arabia). The 33 participants were from different health disciplines of the government sectors in-country. The participants completed the pre- and post-tests and attended three pilot workshops for disaster community awareness. Results:The overall knowledge scores were significantly higher in the post-test (62.9%) than the pre-test (44.2%). There were no significant differences in the pre- and post-knowledge scores for health care providers from the different government health disciplines. A 10-month, post-event survey demonstrated that participants were satisfied with their knowledge retention. Importantly, three of them (16.6%) had the opportunity to put this knowledge into practice in relation to humanitarian aid response. Conclusion:Delivering a competencies-based course in Basic Principles of Complex Humanitarian Emergency for health care providers can help improve their knowledge and skills for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, which is crucial for disaster preparedness augmentation in Saudi Arabia.

Abstract:
Security is an increasingly important issue for business, and with it, the need for authentication. The use of biometric systems for personal authentication is a response to the rising issue of authentication and security. As with any new technology, user acceptance is often hard to measure, thus, in this work, a study of user acceptance of a biometrics authentication system in e-commerce, such as online banking within the Saudi society, was conducted. The study examined whether Saudis are practically willing to accept this technology by involving 306 participants in a large scale laboratory experiment that actively tested a biometric authentication system in combination of a survey. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) was adopted as the theoretical basis to develop the research framework in which the model has proven its efficiency as a good predictor for the study’s application.

Abstract:
After a thorough review of existing studies of clinoptilolite zeolites, three areas for potential investigation of the Saudi Arabian zeolites were found. They are the characterizations, the catalytic activity, active sites, and uses of natural clinoptilolite zeolites. First, no analysis is available worldwide to compare the percentage weight of local zeolites with those sourced from other countries, nor does one exist for the establishment on the zeolite conversion of MBOH with water on acidic catalysts at lower temperatures. Secondly, a review of current literature on the topic revealed that basic and active sites of Saudi Arabian zeolites have yet to be examined. Future investigation of zeolite catalytic activity can be achieved by methyl butynol test reaction (MBOH) and absorption-desorption of ammonia. In the characterization of a range of international materials, the methyl butynol test reaction was utilized, including on natural zeolites, natural clays, and synthesized hydrotalcites. However, the catalytic performance of natural Saudi Arabian clinoptilolite zeolites by test reaction of MBOH conversion has not been yet investigated. Therefore, this article also includes an outline of the general testing conditions and parameters required to execute the accurate characterization of local Saudi clinoptilolite under optimal test conditions. Likewise, knowledge of the important active acidic centers of local materials is prescribed. This can be ascertained by determining the conditions together with the test parameters for the application of the “temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia” method in order to obtain an accurate determination of local Saudi clinoptilolite acidic centers. Additionally, an outline of the catalytic activity of worldwide clinoptilolite is given in this article together with kinetic investigations of other sources for the clinoptilolite zeolite in order to form the basis for the testing of local Saudi clinoptilolite. The percentage average of chemical composition (Wt.%) of natural clinoptilolite from various countries is also included. Finally, a future research plan is proposed here. This will form the basis for a complete study or survey to be compiled detailing the modifications needed to increase the surface areas for Saudi natural clinoptilolite zeolites using different methods of modifications. This could enhance its application as acid catalysts for use in the retardation of coke formation and for membrane separation on cationic exchange.

Basic, Saudin. "Magnetic Holding of Synthetic Quartz For Precision Grinding." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2014. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/5615.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this research work is to investigate the practicality of magnetic workholding of non-magnetic synthetic quartz during high-speed grinding. This research work is sponsored by Quartzdyne and will be used as the starting point to applying single-piece rounding of its quartz. Hypotheses were created that would permit the authors to conclude that magnets are in fact worthwhile workholders for non-magnetic materials. Designs of Experiments were used to reject or fail to reject the null hypotheses. Experiments were carried out using a custom HAAS lathe, modified into a grinding center with an NSK live spindle, and neodymium-iron-boron magnets used to obtain both the holding and shear forces. Lastly, purchased polyolefin foam bumpers were used to increase the shear force, values were obtained with the Starrett force measurement machine. Input variables for the Design of Experiments (DOE) comprised of the holding force, feed-rate, part rotation, and in-feed size of cuts. Sample rotation relative to the magnets was the singular output variable. Experimental results were fitted with the correct distribution and modeled. Once a statistically significant model was attained input settings that minimized quartz sample rotation were determined and used to create an optimized program. Two sets of experiments were needed before the data could be properly fitted with a model. Thirteen out of fifteen samples remained stationary during the optimized program, which was adequate in failing to reject the second null hypothesis; a static sample at 350 RPM will remain static when undergoing high-speed rounding of its outside perimeter. Comparison of cycle times was crucial in reaching this conclusion; in fact, the cycle time of 7 minutes and 58 seconds for the optimized program was substantially less than Quartzdyne's estimated batch flow per piece cycle time of around 15 minutes. Obtaining a model was not possible or needed for the first hypothesis due to all experiments having zero rotation, therefore the authors also failed to reject the first null hypothesis; a static sample sandwiched between two permanent magnets with adequate holding force will remain stationary during rotation (min 250 RPM) Larger in-feed size cuts are possible when the quartz is square in shape –interrupted cuts. As it becomes cylindrical, cuts were reduced to experimental levels. Also, due to the amount of material being removed, the resin bonded wheel required dressing, without it rotation is expected. Variation was noticed while quantifying the shear force; it is attributed to the polyolefin foam bumper with its inconsistent coefficient of friction. A more uniform material, which can provide repeatable shear force values, would lessen the variation. All optimized program samples turned out perfectly round- even the two that had slight rotation.

Abstract: This work sought examine the interrelationship between the strategy of the Family Health and the Center of Pyscholsocial Attention - CAPS in the care of subjects with mental disorders in Campinas-SP. It had as specific objectives: to characterize the system of mental health of Campinas-SP, in structure of the network of assistance (physical aspects, organizational and human resources) and in user population of this service; identify with the professionals in service the feelings of fear and anguish, as well as the expectations and evaluations of them about the care of the bearers of mental disorders, and to understand the inter-relationship and the action strategies on mental health that the professionals created between these two services. For this, the outlook is used theoretical and conceptual of Institutional Analysis, the concepts of Core / Field and arrangements to support matrix/ teams of reference, technology working and psychopathology of work, which targeted in the analysis of data and quantitative in nature qualitative found. The data were derived from nature quantitative information on structure and production of CAPSIII the council, which guided, in turn, the choice of two services participants of this research. Then proceeded with the collection of data in the participating units (2 CAPS and 1 UBS), which was held observation and interviews with professionals such services. The results indicate that there are difficulties of CAPS with the tools of production of these services. With respect to care for people with mental disorders in both services proved to be a importance of the role of nursing to mediate demands clinical or psychiatric these subjects. However, it is only by strategies for interdisciplinary activities which produces a full care, which are meetings of staff, supervision and support matrix. The latter is an arrangement which, along with the teams of reference, help make the interrelationship between the different professionals such services that make this care. Percebeu that there is much that is moving in the care bearers of mental disorders, but through interdisciplinary and intersectoral action, which will form a network of care, seems to be the most appropriate strategy to overcome this challenge.

Abstract: By means of the present study, we analyzed the organization of mental health actions in the basic health network of the city of Campinas (SP), from the implantation of arrangements for the management called Matricial Support. These arrangements aim to advance the enlargement of the clinic of health interdisciplinary teams and reorient the demand for mental health. By deviating the logic of indiscriminate referrals to the logic of co-responsibility, it intends to produce a larger solvability to health assistance. We created focal groups with mental health professionals, from reference teams and managers, and we searched for, under the optics of the hermeneutic-critical approach, an interrelation of their main argumentative lines in a narrative way, with the purpose of combining the analysis with the construction of meanings for the material produced. After these narrative constructions, we produced a narrative goal, linking the different plots and joining them to the social-historical context of mental health and collective health. With that, we intended to contribute so the discussions generated by the professionals may be signified in the interior of political and assistance transformations in the area of mental health. Key-words: mental health, basic health care, matricial support, management.

Abstract:
Globalisation has significantly added to diversity in the workplace, requiring leaders to acquire new skills to negotiate and operate in international environments; this is especially true in the case of multinational corporations where relationships can be complex and mono-cultural management styles can fuel conflict. The proximity of individuals from different cultures raises consciousness of difference; therefore, leaders must be able to deal with the reactions of those with different backgrounds to themselves. Awareness of cultural diversity informs the way leaders define their roles and responsibilities and requires them to carefully apply themselves to team management. This study proposes a theoretical model to address team-level concerns and examines how social identity strengthens the relationship between leadership behaviour and effective leadership. Accordingly, this study evaluates two styles of leadership: charismatic (Conger and Kanungo, 1998) and ethical leadership (Masuda, 2005); it relates them to two aspects of social identity (team identity and leader prototypicality). Propositions are developed concerning how these styles of leadership would be expected to influence leader effectiveness. It is also hypothesised that team identification and leader prototypicality moderate these relationships. This means that social identity and leadership behaviour can interact to create a more effective leader, which may reduce conflict, increasing group cohesion and affective commitment to the organisation. This research utilises a quantitative approach to achieve its objectives. The research participants were selected purposively from the study population, Saudi Arabia Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) due to its successful implementation of cultural diversity. Paper questionnaires were distributed to 500 employees and 100 team leaders; 351 employee questionnaires were collected and these employees were taken from different groups covering 90 separate leaders. A multilevel modelling analysis was used to test the study‟s hypotheses regarding the relationships and interactions between specific variables. This study contributes to the existing literature on leadership and social identity by providing empirical data regarding the significance of two leadership styles (charismatic and ethical) for increasing leader effectiveness; this effectiveness is strengthened when team identity and leader prototypicality moderate these relationships in private organisations in a culturally diverse context. The study findings have meaningful implications for leadership training and development.

Alrashed, M. M. M. "Molecular genetic basis of recessively inherited retinal dystrophies in the Saudi population." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2014. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1418835/.

Full text
Abstract:
Inherited retinal dystrophies (IRD) are a remarkably genetically and phenotypically heterogeneous group of inherited eye diseases, with over 190 causative genes identified to date. In the highly consanguineous Saudi population, autosomal recessive forms of IRD are thought to account for the overwhelming majority of cases. Consanguinity is known to increase the frequency of recessive disorders since it increases the coefficient of inbreeding, which is a measure of the percentage of the genome that is identical by descent. Homozygosity mapping, targeted candidate gene analysis and whole exome sequencing were used to identify the causes of IRD in the Saudi population. Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is the most common form of IRD, and mutations in the RP1 gene cause both recessive and dominant RP. Mutations in RP1 were found to be a common cause of recessive RP in the Saudi population. Novel and previously identified homozygous mutations in the KCNV2 gene were identified in a cohort of patients with a distinct recessive retinal disorder, ‘cone dystrophy with supranormal rod response,’ demonstrating phenotype/genotype correlation. In addition, a founder homozygous CABP4 mutation was identified in four consanguineous Saudi families with clinical features including congenital nystagmus, stable low vision, photophobia and a normal or near-normal fundus appearance, and no symptom of night blindness. Causative homozygous mutations were also found in the IRD genes RBP3, RDH12, CRB1, BBS4, CNGA3, CNGB1, EYS, RLBP1, ABCA4 and PCDH12 in Saudi patients. Four novel candidate genes for retinal degeneration were identified in this study. Potentially pathogenic homozygous variants were identified in EMC1 (c.G430A, p.A144T), KIAA1549 (c.2399_2400insAA, p.T800fs809X), GPR125 (c.C2504G, p.S835C) and DHX29 (c.C2738T, p.A913V). In the majority of cases (31 families) the genetic cause of IRD was identified, demonstrating the power of homozygosity mapping and whole exome sequencing. In four families (3 multiplex and 1 simplex case), however, no potentially pathogenic homozygous variants were identified, indicating that other novel loci and genes may be implicated as causing IRD in the Saudi population.

Abstract: This thesis was composed of studies conducted on 287 women: pre menopausal (69) and post (218); the last with (n=84, WHRT) and without (n=134, WTRT) hormone replacement therapy (HRT), attended at the UNICAMP university hospitals, São Paulo state. The volunteers were recruited from Hospital de Clínicas (n=193) and CAISM hospital (n=94). They aged from 20 to 82 years (y). Postmenopausal women were 40y old and above and presented amenorrhea for at least 1 year. WHRT women were subdivided in 2 groups: one using conjugated estrogens (0.625mg/day, n=48) or estrogen associated with medroxyprogesterone acetate (2.5, 10% of all or 5mg/day 90% of all, n=36). The methodology was characterized by the menopause definition and through questionnaires and a clinical exam. The objective of this study was to verify if HRT, estrogenic or combined, modified plasmatic oxidative markers. The end-point for atherosclerosis was the measurement of common carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), as well as its metabolic regulation. The study also dtermined the activities of several proteins of lipid metabolism: lipoprotein lipase, hepatic lipase, cholesteryl ester and phospholipid transfer protein under HRT estrogenic or combined. ELISA, nephelometric, enzymatic and radiometric methods were used to determine several parameters: cholesterol, non HDL cholesterol (NHDLchol), HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol triglycerides (TG), apolipoproteins (AI e B 100), lipoprotein (a), Lp(a), autoantibodies against oxidized LDL, epitopes of oxidized apolipoprotein B100 (anti-D, anti-D2 e anti-A); activities of CETP, PLTP, HL LH and LPL, catalase, nitrates, TBARS, lipid peroxides, CRP. The radiologic common carotid intima-media thickness was done by Doppler ultrasound. The data were analyzed by the SAS statistical package. Multiple linear regression analyses were used to assess the influence of diverse biochemical markers on carotid IMT. In this study several postmenopausal anthropometric and biochemical effects were pro-atherogenic: increases in IMT, BMI (body mass index), WC (waist circumference), antibodies against oxidized LDL and anti-apoD antibodies titers. HRT showed beneficial actions, decreasing HL activity, reducing anti-D2 antibody titers, increasing HDLchol and catalase activity. The nitrate concentration, TBARS and hydroperoxides showed no changes with HRT. HRT improved the women¿s lipid profiles but not ApoAI and B100. decreased hepatic lipase and increased HDLchol, an anti-atherogenic lipoprotein, reduced anti-D2 and increased catalase activity. Although HRT was insufficient to modify IMT, the multivariate analysis demonstrated that conjugated and estrogen HRT modulated IMT through triglycerides concentration, CETP (negative) and lipid peroxides a situation differently from non-treated women that presented 7 modulators; under estrogenic treatment only TG regulated IMT. As well the hormone treatment influenced favorably excluding the effects positive of CRP. This study reinforces the higher risk of CAD in post-menopausal women and the beneficial action of HRT by improving lipid profiles. It changed favorably HL, HDL-cholesterol, decreased antibodies against oxidized apoB100 and increased catalase activity indicating reduced oxidative stress; not less important are the results showing that HRT although not changing carotid IMT, modified beneficially the relationship of precocious atherosclerosis and its modulators suggesting an atheroprotective action

Chapter Six demonstrates how the Saudi regime’s nominal promotion of women’s rights is largely manipulation rather than real empowerment. State policy to empower women goes hand in hand with serious human rights abuses and repression of feminists and other activists. This chapter discusses the emerging feminist scene in Saudi Arabia and the struggle of women for equality and basic rights.

Abstract:
This chapter examines how geology and climate create vastly different groundwater situations. Effective management of groundwater depends upon full consideration of these differences. The chapter begins with a distinction between confined and unconfined aquifers and a look at artesian wells, with a focus on Australia’s Great Artesian Basin. The characteristics of different rock types are illustrated by four basic aquifer rock types in sub-Saharan Africa. The chapter then turns to non-renewable aquifers in North Africa and Saudi Arabia. The fast-recharging Edwards Aquifer in Texas then provides a quite different story with its sensitivity to short-term climate variability and concerns about endangered species. The chapter concludes with a discussion of saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifers and the potential of brackish groundwater for water supply.

Abstract:
This chapter examines various radical and incremental changes and innovations (physical, economic, educational, societal, and cultural) introduced by the government of Saudi Arabia in view of the slogan “modernization without westernization.” The slogan highlights the government efforts to encourage incremental change to integrate development or modernization with the traditional values. However, the authors aim to confirm whether this is an incremental change accepted by the public or a radical change where the tradition is being replaced by westernization, that is, whether it is modernization with or without westernization. The approach taken in this study is to examine the literature in order to find some evidence that supports or refutes the slogan. The authors also conducted a questionnaire survey involving 237 respondents in order to determine their perceptions toward this slogan. The results provide strong support for both modernization and westernization since these two practices have brought about many positive changes to Saudi Arabia. Thus, if one were to include certain Saudi values into the concept of modernization, particularly those related to culture and religion, one could safely say that the slogan or motto, “modernization without westernization,” is true or acceptable only up to a certain extent. In other words, the findings suggest Saudi society is more accepting of both “modernization” and “westernization” as long as they do not go against the basic tenets of Islam.

Abstract:
At the end of 1990, Saddam Hussein’s invasion and occupation of Kuwait in August of that year dominated headlines internationally. US President George H. W. Bush, an oilman, saw that by annexing Kuwait, Hussein would control 20 per cent of the global oil reserves almost on a par with Saudi Arabia’s. That would deprive Riyadh of being the swing producer able to cause rise or fall in petroleum prices. Such an eventuality had to be aborted with the backing of the international community, with Saudi Arabia as a crucial part of the project. After convincing King Fahd, on the basis of dodgy evidence, that Hussein was readying to attack his country, Bush got invited by Fahd to send US troops to the Desert Kingdom. It was thus that Saudi Arabia became the center of the century’s last major war. By December 1990, the Pentagon, leading a coalition of twenty-eight nations, thirteen of them Arab or Muslim, assembled the most lethal fighting machine since the Second World War to confront 545,000 Iraqi troops in Kuwait and southern Iraq. The fighting between 16 January and 28 February 1991 ended with the defeat of Iraq and the liberation of Kuwait.

Abstract:
This chapter examines marriage patterns in Arabian history and how knowledge of these patterns became a key element of Saudi Arabia's modern genealogical culture. It begins with a review of new historical evidence from the central Arabian oasis town of al-Ghāt, which reveals the way marital patterns preserve knowledge about premodern status hierarchies. It then considers Hamad al-Jāsir's use of marital patterns as a tool of lineal authentication, a practice epitomized in his study of a historically maligned Arabian tribe, Bāhila. It also shows how al-Jāsir made use of Arabian marital patterns as a form of ethnographic data that could serve as a basis for rehabilitating the reputation of historically maligned Arabian tribes and advancing a nativist ethical blueprint for modern Saudi society in which tribal and religious values could cohere harmoniously against perceived external threats.

Abstract:
This chapter continues the book’s analysis of religious freedom in Muslim-majority states by looking at the third of three categories of regimes that are each defined by their political theology. This category is religiously repressive states. It defines the basic features of religiously repressive states, portraying them through the concept of Islamism, a form of political ideology. It identifies Saudi Arabia and Iran as the standard-bearers of this category and focuses on other countries in this category around the world, which total 21. This chapter makes the case for “Islamoskepticism,” though it also argues that this view does not explain everything about this type of regime.

Abstract:
Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) on buried pipelines results from simultaneous presence of tensile stress, a corrosive environment, and a material that is susceptible to SCC. ASME B31.8S provides a basic framework for determining the SCC susceptible segments of buried pipelines. In-line inspection (ILI) has been effective in the industry for locating and sizing SCC on pipelines. There are some inherent limitations in ILI tools that should be recognized in the development of a comprehensive SCC Integrity Management Plan. Saudi Aramco operates a combined pipeline network of approximately 22,000 kilometers in length. A significant number of Saudi Aramco pipelines were built prior to 1980 with tape coating, thereby increasing the susceptibility to SCC. ILI results from 26 pipelines showed presence of SCC out of 93 pipelines inspected using electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) and ultrasonic crack detection (UTCD) technologies. These cracks were later verified through direct examination. Besides the basic framework provided in ASME B31.8S, there were no existing criteria to prioritize the susceptible pipeline segments for the SCC threat. Therefore, Saudi Aramco conducted a comprehensive three-phase study to establish a robust integrity management plan for pipelines with SCC. This paper covers details of the third phase of the study, which is about SCC integrity management planning. Companion papers address Phases 1 and 2. The third phase of the study developed SCC integrity management plans (SCC IMPs) for pipelines with SCC based on the work completed on the first and second phases. The SCC IMPs covered SCC susceptibility profiling along pipeline segments, engineering assessment of SCC features, growth analysis, and a process to respond to the SCC threat. The SCC response strategy included further ILI plans, excavations plans, hydrotest benefit assessments and other mitigation measures, such as pipeline partial replacement and recoating. The approach of the SCC IMP will be deployed on all Saudi Aramco pipelines in the future, to prioritize SCC susceptible segments and their mitigation plans.

Abstract:
Geographical and racial differences in the incidence of thrcmbo-embolisn could be related to basic dissimilaritiesin the haemostatic system in different ethnic groups. However reliable comparative population studies in haemostatic parameters is lacking. The large expatriate ccmnunity in Saudi Arabia offers such a chance.Subjects tested were all healthy blood donors (aged 20-50 years) and were classified on the basis of ethnic origininto three categories (1) Arabs n=750, (2) Westerns (Americans and Europeans) n=400, and (3) S.E. Asians (Filipinos) n=570. The measurements done included PT, PTT, TT, Reptilase time, Plasma fibrinogen, AT III, Plasminogen, F.VIII:C, FX, α-2 Antiplasmin and Platelet aggregation in response to ADP (20.0, 2.0, 1.0, 0.5 & 0.25 uM), Collagen, Arachidonic acid, Adrenaline and Ristocetin (1.5, 1.2 & 1.0 mg/ml).There were no significant ethnic differences in the measured plasmatic clotting tests. This contrasts the finding of many smaller studies. Besides no significant ethnic differences were noted in platelet aggregation response to high doses of ADP (20 uM) or Ristocetin (1.5 mg/ml) and to Collagen. However, 45% of the S.E. Asians displayed abnormally inhibited responses to Adrenaline when compared to Arabs (34%) and Westerns (35.2%). Asians also displayed more inhibited responses to lower doses of ADP (2.0 & 1.0 uM) . On the other hand, S.E. Asians showed the lowest incidence of inhibited Arachidonic acid responses (9%) when compared to Arabs (24%) and Westerns (26%) . Similar racial differences were noted in response to low doses of Ristocetin (1.2 & 1.0 mg%) where Arabs and Asians showed high incidence of abnormally reduced responses (26-28%) when compared to Westerns (15%). No evidence of enhanced aggregation could be detected in Westerns. Changes of climate and/or dietary habits could be important factors influencing the haemostatic system in such a way that reduces ethnic dissimilarities.

Abstract:
The last decade has brought a row of substantial changes that have profound implications for the traditional hydrocarbon resource-rich economies. Economic conditions may change radically either throughout a decade or within months. The question is whether there is no other option for a hydrocarbon resource-rich economy than to be held hostage to the fluctuations in global oil prices. The general answer to a changing environment is: Adapt! From the macroeconomic perspective, this means diversifying the economy to broaden the income base and significantly reduce the dependence on oil revenues. The Saudi Vision 2030 represents a complex plan for substantial socioeconomic adjustments that are about to move the economy toward a more diversified and sustainable one. This discussion paper examines the preferred diversification paths for the Saudi economy in more detail, with a focus on the foreseen adjustments in the sectoral composition of the economy along with broader macroeconomic shifts. The evaluation of the foreseen diversification impacts is based on the updated Vision 2030 Input-Output Table that maps the changing structure of the Saudi economy over the coming decade. We discuss the assumed expansion of the diversification frontrunners, their changing contribution to the overall economic activity and identify the preferred diversification paths for the Saudi economy. The advances in economic diversification are measured by applying the Shannon-Weaver index to sectoral GDP and household income. The expected sectoral changes are wide-reaching, so the basic macroeconomic relations are also subject to adjustments. We also conduct a sensitivity analysis to examine the effects of the foreseen diversification on the resilience of the Saudi economy to external shocks.
