Abstract. Abgesehen von einem unreifen Araukarienzapfen, der 1927 von Gothan kurz beschrieben wurde, werden erstmalig Pflanzenreste aus den Jura-Kreide-Grenzschichten des Tendaguru bekannt gemacht. Verkieselte Hölzer vor allem aus kreidezeitlichen Schichtabschnitten repräsentieren die für den Jura üblichen Koniferengruppen wie Taxodiaceae, Cupressaceae und Taxaceae. Daneben konnten Ginkgoaceae nachgewiesen werden. Fusit ist nicht selten, meist aber sehr schlecht erhalten, bis auf ein Stück, das die Merkmale einer wahrscheinlich neuen Art von Glyptostroboxylon, einer Taxodiacee, zeigt. Naturmazerate von Kutikulen sind in den mittleren Saurier-Mergeln (tieferes Kimmeridge) häufig und können möglicherweise Ginkgophyten des Baiera/Sphenobaiera-Typs zugerechnet werden. Damit scheint die Flora von Tendaguru auf den ersten Blick von Gymnospermen extrem stark dominiert zu sein. Diese Dominanz ist wahrscheinlich auf taphonomische Prozesse und auf die selektive Probennahme während der Grabungsexpedition in den Jahren 1909–1913 zurückzuführen. So erscheinen neue Profilaufnahmen im Gelände unumgänglich, um ein differenzierteres Bild der jurassisch-kretazischen Flora des östlichen Afrika – die die Ernährungsgrundlage der meisten Dinosaurier vom Tendaguru bildete – zu entwickeln und phytogeographische Beziehungen genauer fassen zu können. Little is known about the Jurassic flora of East Africa. Therefore a preliminary account on plant remains from the well-known „Saurierlagerstätte” of Tendaguru is presented. Specimens of silicified wood represent typical conifers, such as Taxodiaceae, Cupressaceae and Taxaceae, but also demonstrate the presence of Ginkgoales. Fusite is very common, but mostly not well preserved, except for one specimen which shows the characteristics of possibly a new species of the Taxodiacean genus Glyptostroboxylon. Natural macerated cuticules are abundant in the „middle Saurier-Mergel” (Lower Kimmeridgian) and they at least in part seem to belong to Ginkgophytaleans of the Baiera/Sphenobaiera-group. At first glance the composition of the flora of Tendaguru seems to be biased towards a predominance of Gymnosperms. This is not only a result of taphonomical processes, but also of selective sampling in 1909–1913. Abstract. To derive physiological data of dinosaurs, it is necessary to determine the volume and the surface area of this animals. For this purpose, a detailed survey of reconstructed skeletons is required. The skeletons of three dinosaurs in the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin and two skeletons in the Museum d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris have been surveyed using stereo photogrammetry. Two of the Berlin skeletons were also surveyed with the close range laser scanners of the Institut für Navigation of the Universität Stuttgart. Both data acquisition techniques require a geodetic control network as a geometric reference system. The surveying methods used, together with results of mathematical approaches for the determination of the volume and surface of the animals are presented in this paper. Zur Herleitung physiologischer Daten der Dinosaurier ist es erforderlich, zunächst Volumen und Oberfläche ihres Körpers zu bestimmen. Dazu wurde eine detaillierte Vermessung rekonstruierter Skelette durchgeführt. Die Skelette dreier Saurier im Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin und zweier im Museum d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris wurden stereophotogrammetrisch vermessen. Bei zwei der Berliner Skelette wurden zusätzlich die Laserscanner des Instituts für Navigation der Universität Stuttgart eingesetzt. Beide Datenerfassungstechniken benötigen ein Paßpunktfeld als geometrisches Referenzsystem. AbstractA survey of gastro-intestinal helminth communities of Gallotia stehlini (Sauria: Lacertidae) from Gran Canaria island (Canary Archipelago, Spain), was conducted to determine the prevalence, abundance and species diversity of intestinal parasites in these lizards. Pharyngodonid nematodes were the most common intestinal helminths, three species being Gallotia specialists. Helminth infracommunities of G. stehlini were rich and appear to be closer to the interactive end of the continuum isolationist–interactive helminth communities, according to the high values of helminth diversity. It is the first case of a saurian reptile showing this kind of diverse helminth infracommunity, produced by a large size, a wide-ranging plant diet and exposure to helminths with direct life-cycles.

Ein durchgängig saurer pH-Wert im Stratum corneum ist ein wesentlicher Bestandteil des Schutzsystems der Haut, der eine feindliche Umgebung für die Besiedelung durch pathogene Mikroorganismen schafft. Doch diese Barriere kann bei gesunder und umso mehr bei geschädigter Haut durchbrochen werden. Mykosen, Windel-/Inkontinenz-assoziierte Dermatitis und Wundheilung sind Beispiele für Situationen, in denen durch veränderte Haut- oder Umgebungsbedingungen eine mikrobielle Infektion begünstigt wird. Pilze verfügen über ein komplexes System, mit dem sie den pH-Wert ihrer Umgebung erfassen, um durch entsprechende Stoffwechselreaktionen ihre Adhäsion, Vermehrung und Invasion zu gewährleisten, indem mikrobielle Metaboliten den pH-Wert der Haut weiter erhöhen, bis schließlich eine klinisch manifeste Infektion (Mykose) vorliegt. Menschen mit Diabetes, bei denen der pH-Wert der Haut in intertriginösen Bereichen erhöht ist, sind besonders anfällig für Candidosen. Bei Windeldermatitis und Inkontinenz-assoziierter Dermatitis ist die Ursache für den erhöhten pH-Wert der Haut und die Schädigung der Hautbarrierefunktion der Kontakt mit Urin und Fäzes, ob unter Okklusion oder nicht, und durch Wirts- und mikrobielle Enzyme und Metaboliten wird dieser Zustand aufrechterhalten. Das führt zur Dezimierung der schützenden residenten Mikroflora und ihrer Überwucherung durch Pilze, meist Candida albicans. Die Hautpflege mit leicht sauren Produkten kann helfen, diese Form von Dermatitis zu verhindern und zu behandeln. Der Prozess der Wundheilung ist eine komplexe Abfolge biologischer Ereignisse, die mit dem pH-Wert der Umgebung korrelieren, welcher die verschiedenen Phasen der Wundheilung beeinflusst. Der pH-Wert ist für die adäquate Aktivität von Immunzellen und wichtigen Enzymen ebenso bestimmend wie für die Biofilmbildung. Wenn der Heilungsprozess gestört wird, können Wunden chronisch werden und sind dann durch einen neutralen bis leicht alkalischen pH-Wert gekennzeichnet. Vor diesem Hintergrund könnten die Überwachung des pH-Wertes und die Herstellung eines sauren Milieus als Wundbehandlungsmaßnahme sinnvoll sein.

Abstract:

Background Weigeltisauridae is a clade of small-bodied diapsids characterized by a horned cranial frill, slender trunk and limbs, and a patagium supported by elongated bony rods. Partial skeletons and fragments are definitively known only from upper Permian (Lopingian) rocks in England, Germany, Madagascar and Russia. Despite these discoveries, there have been few detailed descriptions of weigeltisaurid skeletons, and the homologies of many skeletal elements—especially the rods supporting the patagium—remain the subject of controversy. Materials & Methods Here, we provide a detailed description of a nearly complete skeleton of Weigeltisaurus jaekeli from the upper Permian (Lopingian: Wuchiapingian) Kupferschiefer of Lower Saxony, Germany. Briefly addressed by past authors, the skeleton preserves a nearly complete skull, postcranial axial skeleton, appendicular skeleton, and patagial supports. Through comparisons with extant and fossil diapsids, we examine the hypotheses for the homologies of the patagial rods. To examine the phylogenetic position of Weigeltisauridae and characterize the morphology of the clade, we integrate the material and other weigeltisaurids into a parsimony-based phylogenetic analysis focused on Permo-Triassic non-saurian Diapsida and early Sauria (61 taxa, 339 characters). Results We recognize a number of intriguing anatomical features in the weigeltisaurid skeleton described here, including hollow horns on the post-temporal arch, lanceolate teeth in the posterior portion of the maxilla, the absence of a bony arch connecting the postorbital and squamosal bones, elongate and slender phalanges that resemble those of extant arboreal squamates, and patagial rods that are positioned superficial to the lateral one third of the gastral basket. Our phylogenetic study recovers a monophyletic Weigeltisauridae including Coelurosauravus elivensis, Weigeltisaurus jaekeli, and Rautiania spp. The clade is recovered as the sister taxon to Drepanosauromorpha outside of Sauria (=Lepidosauria + Archosauria). Conclusions Our anatomical observations and phylogenetic analysis show variety of plesiomorphic diapsid characters and apomorphies of Weigeltisauridae in the specimen described here. We corroborate the hypothesis that the patagial ossifications are dermal bones unrelated to the axial skeleton. The gliding apparatus of weigeltisaurids was constructed from dermal elements unknown in other known gliding diapsids. SMNK-PAL 2882 and other weigeltisaurid specimens highlight the high morphological disparity of Paleozoic diapsids already prior to their radiation in the early Mesozoic.

ZusammenfassungBei Hochleistungskühen haben subklinische Störungen des Säure-Basen-Haushalts große Bedeutung. Eine Möglichkeit zur Beurteilung des Säure-Basen-Haushalts bietet die Harnuntersuchung. Im Rahmen von monatlichen Untersuchungen in neun Betrieben in Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern und Sachsen-Anhalt wurden bei Kühen aus je fünf unterschiedlichen Laktationsgruppen (frühe Trockensteher, Vorbereitungskühe, Kühe in Woche 0-1, 3-5, 15-18 post partum) Harnproben entnommen und die Poolproben untersucht. Der Harn-pH reagiert signifikant auf die Zufütterung saurer Salze und NaHCO3, die Veränderungen sind aber nur gering. Mit dem Einsatz saurer Salze sinken die Netto-Säure-Basen-Ausscheidung (NSBA) und die Natriumausscheidung signifikant, die Kalziumausscheidung steigt signifikant an. Mit der Zufütterung von NaHCO3 fällt die Chloridausscheidung ab, NSBA und pH-Wert steigen in alkalische Bereiche. NaHCO3 bedingt eine alkalische Harnreaktion, die es unmöglich macht, eventuelle azidotische Belastungen zu entdecken.

Abstract:

The presently reported study identified Saurida lessepsianus Russell, Golani et Tikochinski, 2015 from the west coast of India, which was earlier diagnosed as Saurida undosquamis (Richardson, 1848) due to their morphological similarities. Saurida lessepsianus is characterized by 48–51 lateral line scales, 44–47 vertebrae, 3–6 rows of teeth on tongue and anterior part of stomach black. The identity of this species was also confirmed by molecular examination (phylogenetic analysis of the COI sequences) and the study revealed a genetic divergence value of 0.08 between S. lessepsianus and S. undosquamis. Our study confirms the extended distribution of S. lessepsianus along the west coast of India (eastern Arabian Sea) from the Red Sea-Mediterranean Sea.

Abstract The Pacific saury (Cololabis saira) is a fish of commercial importance subject to unpredictable epidemics of infection by Pennella sp., a parasitic copepod. We analyzed the distribution of fish presenting with newly attached Pennella to determine the region and season in which Pennella first infect the fish. Pacific sauries migrate northward in the spring to spend the summer in the subarctic region, successively crossing the Subarctic Boundary (SAB) and the Subarctic Front (SAF). The fish then return to subtropical waters in the fall and overwinter there. Pacific sauries infected with Pennella were observed on both the north and south sides of the SAF from May to December. Newly attached Pennella, however, were observed mainly to the south of the SAF during the northward migration of the fish in May and June, and only to the south of the SAB during the southward migration in November and December. These results indicate that the intermediate host or hosts of Pennella inhabit the region south of the SAF, with infection of Pacific saury occurring during late fall and spring. Such information may assist in identifying the intermediate host(s).

In this second paper dedicated to report on deep-sea fishes from Brazilian waters, mainly from Bahia, the presence of one family and three species of Aulopoidei is reported for the first time from Brazilian waters: the aulopid Aulopus filamentosus (royal flagfin), the synodontids Saurida normani and Synodus poeyi (shortjaw lizardfish and offshore lizardfish, respectively). The presence of Synodus saurus and Saurida suspicio in Brazilian waters is discussed, and a key to the Western Atlantic Aulopoidei is provided.

Abstract:

Etwa 10–20% der Bevölkerung leiden unter typischen Refluxsymptomen wie Sodbrennen, Regurgitation, saurem Aufstossen und retrosternalen Schmerzen. Bei diesen Patienten ist meist schon aufgrund der typischen Anamnese eine gastro-ösophageale Refluxkrankheit zu vermuten, und bei ca. 30–50% dieser Patienten lassen sich bei der endoskopischen Untersuchung typische erosive Veränderungen in der Speiseröhre nachweisen. Neben der klinischen Symptomatik hat die Endoskopie eine zentrale Bedeutung bei der Diagnostik der gastro-ösophagealen Refluxerkrankung. Die Endoskopie ist beim Vorliegen von Alarmsymptomen immer indiziert. Bei längerfristigen Refluxbeschwerden ist die Endoskopie zur Diagnostik einer erosiven Refluxösophagitis indiziert, und es sollte dabei auch eine Routinebiopsie distal der Z-Linie durchgeführt werden, um eine mögliche Barrett-Metaplasie histologisch nachzuweisen. Ein Grossteil der Patienten weist zwar typische Symptome auf, die auch auf Säuresuppression ansprechen, aber bei der Endoskopie zeigen sich keine Erosionen (nicht erosive Refluxkrankheit NERD). Hier müssen ggf. weitere diagnostische Schritte unternommen werden, um die Diagnose der gastro-ösophagealen Refluxkrankheit zu verifizieren. Weiterhin gibt es Patienten, die unklare, atypische Refluxsymptome aufweisen, wie Atemwegserkrankungen mit Asthma bronchiale, chronischer Bronchitis, chronischem Husten oder HNO-Probleme wie Laryngitis posterior und Globusgefühl. In diesen unklaren Fällen und bei Patienten mit NERD kann eine 24-Stunden-pH-Metrie den sauren gastroösophagealen Reflux verifizieren und objektivieren und es kann eine Assoziation zwischen Säurereflux und Beschwerdesymptomatik hergestellt werden. Alternativ können mit einer probatorischen Therapie mit einem Protonenpumpeninhibitor die Patienten identifiziert werden, bei denen Säure-assoziierte Problematik und Symptome vorliegen. Andere Funktionsuntersuchungen wie z.B. Röntgenuntersuchung, Manometrie oder Szintigraphie sind für die Primärdiagnostik der gastro-ösophagealen Refluxerkrankung weniger oder nicht geeignet.

Abstract:

Se caracteriza la cola en dos especies simpátricas de saurios endémicos de Ecuador. Utilizamos como técnicas de muestreo trampas de goma en ocho transectos de 500 m de distancia y trampas de caída de 80x80x80 cm. Para evaluar la condición de las colas se establecieron las categorías: intacta, ausente y regenerada. Entre 2012 y 2014 capturamos 138 saurios, 125 individuos de Stenocercus guentheri y trece de Pholidobolus montium. Alrededor del 61 % de los individuos tenían la cola intacta. Reportamos por primera vez bifurcación de la cola en Stenocercus guentheri; observamos tres individuos con esta característica.

En el presente trabajo se realizó la evaluación de la herpetofauna de la Reserva del Bosque Húmedo Tropical de Tinalandia. El método empleado fue de transectos en siete sitios de muestreo, de 200 m de largo y de 800m2 por sitio, con 40 horas de muestreo/persona/día. Del total 409 observados, 84 organismos fueron recolectados, 70 anfibios agrupados en 3 Órdenes, 13 Familias y 25 Especies; 14 reptiles (saurios) agrupados en 6 Familias con 8 especies; para serpientes solo I familia con 3 especies. Los anfibios están representados por 6 familias de anuros: Hylidae con 4 especies, que representa el 16%; Brachycephalidae con 3 especies, 12%; Bufonidae, Leptodactilidae y Dendrobatidae con 2 especies cada uno, 8%; y, Ranidae con una sola especie, 4 %. Reptiles están representados por 7 familias: Polychrotidae con 3 especies, 12 %; Hoplocercidae, Gymnotalmidae, Gekkonidae, Corytophanidae, Teiidae con una especie cada una con el 4%, representando todas estas al Orden Sauria con un 32%; y la Familia Colubridae con 3 especies, con el 12% para Ofidios. La Diversidad (Shannon) es 2.17 bitios, que representa a un ecosistema con un valor bajo, lo cual es la respuesta por la marcada dominancia de 4 especies que representan el 8 l. 70 % de la muestra: Lithobates sp con pi 0,284; Hypsiboas rosemberg con Pi 0,208; Eleutherodactylus achatinus con pi O, 176; y, Hypsiboas pellucens con un pi 0,149. Se presenta un endemismo de 64% para las especies registradas. Se aporta con 10 nuevos registros de especies para la zona. El más destacado es el segundo registro para el Ecuador de la especie Epipedobates espinosai. En general, el estado de conservación de la herpetofauna de RNT es estable, únicamente una especie registró una categoría vulnerable (VU) (Hyloxalus awa). En tanto que el hábitat de humedal presenta las especies con mayor abundancia.

Abstract:

SUMMARYA new microsporidian that infects the lizardfish Saurida undosquamis (Richardson, 1848) that are caught in the Arabian Gulf in Saudi Arabia is described here. This parasite invades the skeletal muscle of the abdominal cavity forming white, cyst-like structures containing numerous spores. The prevalence of the infection was 32·1% (135/420). The spores were oval to pyriform in shape and measured approximately 3·3 μm×2·0 μm. The developing spores were found within parasitophorous vacuoles. In mature spores, the polar filament was arranged into 5 coils in a row. Molecular analysis of the rRNA genes, including the ITS region, and phylogenetic analyses using maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian inference were performed. The ultrastructural characteristics and phylogenetic analyses support the recognition of a new species, herein named Heterosporis saurida n. sp.

Abstract:

The transient receptor potential plays a critical role in the sensory nervous systems of vertebrates in response to various mechanisms and stimuli, such as environmental temperature. We studied the physiological adaptive evolution of the TRP gene in the saurian family and performed a comprehensive analysis to identify the evolution of the thermo-TRPs channels. All 251 putative TRPs were divided into 6 subfamilies, except TRPN, from the 8 saurian genomes. Multiple characteristics of these genes were analyzed. The results showed that the most conserved proteins of TRP box 1 were located in motif 1, and those of TRP box 2 were located in motif 10. The TRPA and TRPV in saurian tend to be one cluster, as a sister cluster with TRPC, and the TRPM is the root of group I. The TRPM, TRPV, and TRPP were clustered into two clades, and TRPP were organized into TRP PKD1-like and PKD2-like. Segmental duplications mainly occurred in the TRPM subfamily, and tandem duplications only occurred in the TRPV subfamily. There were 15 sites to be under positive selection for TRPA1 and TRPV2 genes. In summary, gene structure, chromosomal location, gene duplication, synteny analysis, and selective pressure at the molecular level provided some new evidence for genetic adaptation to the environment. This result provides a basis for identifying and classifying TRP genes and contributes to further elucidating their potential function in thermal sensors.

AbstractProtozooplankton are dominant grazers of phytoplankton and an important component of the microbial food web, as a link between pico and nanoplankton to higher trophic levels. Their fast growing rate, relative abundance, biomass and diversity are used as indicators of organic and toxic pollution. The impact of urbanisation on ecosystems and their sustainability and biodiversity have recently been much studied. We studied the protozooplankton ciliate communities during the vegetation period from April to October in two small lakes (Bābelītis, Gaiļezers) and two reservoirs (Bolderāja, Saurieši). The largest peak of biomass (15.7 × 102 mg/l) was found in Gaiļezers Lake in August and of abundance (60.2 × 103 org/l) in Bābelītis Lake in July. The lowest biomass (0.006 mg/l) and abundance (0.12 × 103 org/l) were found in the Saurieši Reservoir station. The most abundant ciliates were from the order Oligotrichida.

Zusammenfassung. Dentale Erosionen entstehen durch den wiederkehrenden Kontakt von Lösungen, die an Zahnmineralien ungesättigt sind, mit den Zahnhartsubstanzen. Dieses führt initial zu einer Erweichung und später zu einem irreversiblen Verlust an Zahnhartsubstanzen. Erosionen werden insbesondere beim übermässigen Konsum saurer Lebensmittel (z.B. Softdrinks oder Zitrusfrüchte) aber auch im Zusammenhang mit gastrointestinalen Erkrankungen (gastroösophageale Reflux-Erkrankung) oder psychosomatischen Erkrankung (Anorexia nervosa oder Bulimia nervosa) beobachtet. Ziel des vorliegenden Artikels ist es, dentale Erosionen zu definieren und ihre Ursachen, Prävalenz und Folgen sowie mögliche präventive Massnahmen aufzuzeigen. Anhand eines klinischen Beispiels eines Patienten mit Reflux-bedingten Erosionen wird eine Therapiemöglichkeit mit direktem Kompositaufbauten der Zähne dargestellt.

Relief sculpture (κοροπλαθική) was discovered by the girl (she traced the outline [σκιά] of her lover on a wall while he was asleep). Her father was so delighted by the resemblance that, since he worked in ceramics, he engraved the impression and fleshed it out with clay. That figure (τύπος) is still preserved in Corinth. After them Daidalos, Theodoros, and Smilis invented sculpture and the plastic arts.
