Abstract:

This article is devoted to the main character of the famous I-novel written by modern Japanese writer Sayaka Murata – "Convenience store woman". The novel brought the writer great popularity and many literary awards, one of which is the most prestigious literary award in Japan – the Akutagawa Ryunosuke Award. Since in many ways this novel is autobiographical and based on Sayaka Murata's own life experience, she managed to deeply reveal many of the current problems of modern society in Japan by the example of the image of the main character in the novel "Convenience store woman".

This paper examines the comparison between two literary works in the form of novels originating from Indonesia and Japan. Compelling women's fiction in Japan hardly began with its two brightest contemporary stars, Kawakami Mieko and Murata Sayaka. Tawada Yoko won the Akutagawa Prize back in 1993 and her work is widely read outside Japan (Tawada has long lived in Germany and writes in German and Japanese). Ogawa Yoko won in 1990 for her novel Pregnancy Diary (Ninshin karendaa, 妊娠カレンダー). In 2004 the Akutagawa went to two young women, Wataya Risa (19) and Kanehara Hitomi (20). There have been English translations of fiction by Japanese women for decades.

Abstract:

We present this dossier on fiction-writer Tsushima Yūko (1947~2016) just as two new volumes of her writings have appeared in print. Two stories came out in Of Dogs and Walls in February 2018 in Penguin Classics, followed by Territory of Light (光の領分, 1979) in April 2018. Both by Geraldine Harcourt, these new translations build on works originally translated in the 1980s, Child of Fortune (寵児, 1982) and The Shooting Gallery (1988).
