Abstract:
Abstract Cyanobacteria are the rich resource of various secondary metabolites including toxins with broad pharmaceutical significance. The aim of this work was to evaluate the antiproliferative, neurotoxic, genotoxic and mutagenic effects of cyanobacterial extracts containing Microcystin-LR (MCLR) in vitro. ELISA analysis results showed that MCLR contents of five cyanobacterial extracts were 2.07 ng/mL, 1.43 ng/mL, 1.41 ng/mL, 1.27 ng/mL, and 1.12 ng/mL for Leptolyngbya sp. SB1, Phormidium sp. SB4, Oscillatoria earlei SB5, Phormidium sp. SB2, Uncultured cyanobacterium, respectively. Phormidium sp. SB4 and Phormidium sp. SB2 extracts had the lowest neurotoxicity (86% and 79% cell viability, respectively) and Oscillatoria earlei SB5 extracts had the highest neurotoxicity (47% cell viability) on PC12 cell at 1000 µg/ml extract concentration. Leptolyngbya sp. SB1 and Phormidium sp. SB2 showed the highest antiproliferative effect (92% and 77% cell death) on HT29 cell. On the other hand, all concentrations of five toxic cyanobacterial extracts induced DNA damage between 3.0% and 1.3% of tail intensity and did not cause any direct mutagenic effect at the 1000 µg/plate cyanobacterial extracts. These results suggest that cyanobacteria-derived MCLR is a promising candidate for development of effective agents against colon cancer.

Abstract:
Background: The GRPR-antagonist 68Ga-SB3 visualized prostate cancer lesions in animal models and in patients. Switching radiometal from 68Ga to 111In impaired tumor targeting in mice, but coinjection of the neprilysin (NEP)-inhibitor phosphoramidon (PA) stabilized 111In-SB3 in circulation and remarkably increased tumor uptake. We herein report on the biological profile of 111In-SB4: 111In-[dAla11]SB3. Methods: The biological responses of 111In-SB3/SB4 were compared in PC-3 cells and animal models. Results: Gly11/dAla11-replacement deteriorated GRPR-affinity (SB4 IC50: 10.7 ± 0.9 nM vs. SB3 IC50: 4.6 ± 0.3 nM) and uptake in PC-3 cells (111In-SB4: 1.3 ± 0.4% vs. 111In-SB3 16.2 ± 0.8% at 1 h). 111In-SB4 was more stable than 111In-SB3, but PA-coinjection stabilized both radiotracers in peripheral mice blood. Unmodified 111In-SB3 showed higher uptake in PC-3 xenografts (8.8 ± 3.0%ID/g) vs. 111In-SB4 (3.1 ± 1.1%ID/g) at 4 h pi. PA-coinjection improved tumor uptake, with 111In-SB3 still showing superior tumor targeting (38.3 ± 7.9%ID/g vs. 7.4 ± 0.3%ID/g for 111In-SB4). Conclusions: Replacement of Gly11 by dAla11 improved in vivo stability, however, at the cost of GRPR-affinity and cell uptake, eventually translating into inferior tumor uptake of 111In-SB4 vs. unmodified 111In-SB3. On the other hand, in-situ NEP-inhibition turned out to be a more efficient and direct strategy to optimize the in vivo profile of 111In-SB3, and potentially other peptide radiotracers.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The levels of physiochemical, heavy metal and microbiological pollution in different oil contaminated regions of Tiruchirappalli city were reported in the study. The water and sediment samples from four different oil contaminated regions in Tiruchirappalli city were collected during monsoon 2015. The sampling regions were divided into two category such as heavy oil contaminated regions (oil shed / oil washed regions) and bus stand regions. In oil contaminated water sample, counts of TVC, TC, TS, FC, FS, VC, SAC, SHC and PC were in the range of 21300 126000, 1620 13200, 240 1050, 250 1130, 100 250, 120 180, 80 160, 130 200 and 260 560 CFU/mL, respectively. In soil sample, the TVC, TC, TS, FC, FS, VLO, SC and PC ranges were 56000 218000, 3100 14800, 350 1260, 330 1420, 150 300, 110 240, 120 200, 160 260 and 410 1060 CFU/g, respectively. The results of this study indicated that oil shed regions gor higher pollutions tha bus stand regions. This study gave a special emphasis on the determination of the levels of pollution and also identified the vulnerable regions. Hence, throughout impoundment and continuous monitoring is needed.

Abstract:
Three new fungicides, azoxystrobin, fludioxonil, and pyrimethanil, that belong to different chemical classes are highly effective in managing citrus green mold and are being registered for postharvest use in the United States. Recirculating in-line drenches provided a significantly improved efficacy compared with standard low-volume spray applications. To prevent pathogen contamination of drench solutions, two oxidizing disinfectants, sodium hypochlorite and hydrogen peroxide/peroxyacetic acid (HPPA) solutions, were evaluated. Inhibition of conidial germination of Penicillium digitatum was dependent on the pH of the solution and the exposure time for each sanitizing agent. Chlorine (50 mg/liter) and HPPA (2,700 mg/liter) effectively inhibited germination in 40- and 240-s exposures, respectively, at pH 7. All fungicides tested were compatible and effective with HPPA, whereas fludioxonil, azoxystrobin, and thiabendazole, but not imazalil and pyrimethanil, were compatible with chlorine. In laboratory studies, sodium bicarbonate (SBC, 3%) significantly increased the efficacy of the three fungicides (250 mg/liter) and had no adverse effect on their stability in aqueous solutions. Fludioxonil (300 mg/liter)-SBC mixtures were still highly effective when applied 24 h after fruit inoculation. In experimental packingline studies, SBC or SBC-chlorine improved the efficacy of fludioxonil, whereas azoxystrobin was effective with and without these additives. Heating of drench solutions of fludioxonil (300 mg/liter) to 50°C did not improve decay control. In conclusion, in-line recirculating drench applications and fungicide-sanitizer-SBC mixtures significantly increased fungicide efficacy and provide an integrated approach for optimizing fungicide efficacy. These strategies also should minimize the selection for resistant isolates of the pathogen.

Abstract:
Chapter 6 examines changes in political participation among voters, focusing on a key indicator in the study of democracies: electoral turnout. Data on state election outcomes between 1974 and 2007 show that turnout plummeted in the first election after constituencies became reserved in the 1970s. Gradually, there was a narrowing gap in voter turnout between SC-reserved and nonreserved constituencies, but after more than 30 years there was still a difference of several percentage points. Exploring the reasons, the chapter shows that this variation in political participation it was not mainly due to caste bias, or feelings of being disempowered, but rather because of the weaker networks and mobilizational capacity of SC politicians. As the political experience and mobilizational capacity of SC politicians has increased, so has voter turnout.

Abstract:
AbstractChanging legal and parental practices across Europe led to a higher share of parents practicing shared physical custody (SPC) upon separation, who tended to be more affluent and less conflict-ridden. Since SPC became more prevalent, profiles of SPC parents pluralized. Far from these developments, no clearly defined legal pathways toward SPC existed in Switzerland before 2017. Profiling the Swiss case, we examine the prevalence of SPC families, and its associations with parental health and well-being before these legislative changes. Among 875 separated parents of 1,269 minors, SPC (i.e., child alternates between parental homes at least 30% of the time) was practiced by about 11% of the sample. A higher share of SPC parents was highly-educated, yet more financially strained compared to other parents. Although no overall differences in health and well-being emerged between SPC and other separated parents (e.g., with sole custody), SPC-health-linkages varied by gender and education. We conclude that lacking institutional support for SPC and gender-biased employment practices reinforce traditional custody models. Because of costly childcare and more skewed time splits among Swiss SPC parents, SPC may represent more of a resource drain—at least economically—than a relief for the parent shouldering more care duties and expenses.

Abstract:
Mobile GPU computing, or System on Chip with embedded GPU (SoC GPU), becomes in great demand recently. Since these SoCs are designed for mobile devices with real-time applications such as image processing and video processing, high-efficient implementations of wavelet transform are essential for these chips. In this paper, the author develops two SoC GPU based DWT: signal based parallelization for discrete wavelet transform (sDWT) and coefficient based parallelization for discrete wavelet transform (cDWT), and the author evaluates the performance of three-dimensional wavelet transform on SoC GPU Tegra K1. Computational results show that, SoC GPU based DWT is significantly faster than SoC CPU based DWT. Computational results also show that, sDWT can generally satisfy the requirement of real-time processing (30 frames per second) with the image sizes of 352×288, 480×320, 720×480 and 1280×720, while cDWT can only obtain read-time processing with small image sizes of 352×288 and 480×320.

Abstract:
This chapter examined Fenton and sequencing batch reactor (SBR) treatment of pesticide industrial wastewater. The optimum operating conditions for Fenton pretreatment of the pesticide wastewater were H2O2/COD molar ratio 3.0, H2O2/Fe2+ molar ratio 10, pH 3 and reaction time 60 min. The COD and TOC removal were 58.51 and 39.76%, respectively and biodegradability (BOD5/COD ratio) increased from 0.02 to ~ 0.30 after 60 min reaction time. The reaction followed pseudo-first order kinetics with a rate constant (k) of 0.0083 min−1. In the post-treatment by aerobic SBR, five different Fenton operating conditions were investigated and H2O2/COD molar ratio 3.0, H2O2/Fe2+ molar ratio 25, pH 3 and reaction time 60 min appeared to be the most significant (p < 0.05) operating conditions. The Fenton–SBR treatment at 12 hr HRT achieved COD, TOC and BOD5 removal efficiency of 96.7, 97.7 and 93.3%, respectively. The Fenton-SBR process was effective for the treatment of pesticide wastewater.

Abstract:
Fung-E Hong of the National Chung Hsing University devised (Adv. Synth. Catal. 2011, 353, 1491) a protocol for the oxidative cleavage of an alkene 1 (or an alkyne) to the carboxylic acid 2. Patrick H. Dussault of the University of Nebraska found (Synthesis 2011, 3475) that Na triacetoxyborohydride reduced the methoxy hydroperoxide from the ozonolysis of 3 to the aldehyde 4. Reductive amination of 4 can be effected in the same pot with the same reagent. Philippe Renaud of the University of Bern used (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2011, 133, 5913) air to promote the free radical reduction to 6 of the intermediate from the hydroboration of 5. Robert H. Grubbs of Caltech showed (Org. Lett. 2011, 13, 6429) that the phosphonium tetrafluoroborate 8 prepared by hydrophosphonation of 7 could be used directly in a subsequent Wittig reaction. Dominique Agustin of the Université de Toulouse epoxidized (Adv. Synth. Catal. 2011, 353, 2910) the alkene 9 to 10 without solvent other than the commercial aqueous t-butyl hydroperoxide. Justin M. Notestein of Northwestern University effected (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2011, 133, 18684) cis dihydroxylation of 9 to 11 using 30% aqueous hydrogen peroxide. Chi-Ming Che of the University of Hong Kong devised (Chem. Commun. 2011, 47, 10963) a protocol for the anti-Markownikov oxidation of an alkene 12 to the aldehyde 13. Aziridines such as 14 are readily prepared from alkenes. Jeremy B. Morgan of the University of North Carolina Wilmington uncovered (Org. Lett. 2011, 13, 5444) a catalyst that rearranged 14 to the protected amino alcohol 15. A monosubstituted alkene 16 is particularly reactive both with free radicals and with coordinately unsaturated metal centers. A variety of transformations of monosubstituted alkenes have been reported. Nobuharu Iwasawa of the Tokyo Institute of Technology employed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2011, 133, 12980) a Pd pincer complex to catalyze the oxidative monoborylation of 16 to give 17. The 1,1-bis boryl derivatives could also be prepared. Professor Renaud effected (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2011, 133, 13890) radical addition to 16 leading to the terminal azide 18.

Abstract:
This chapter is based on an empirical research study that attempts to gain an understanding of the social customers' behavior by identifying the factors that influence their decision to participate in social customer relationship management (CRM) programs. A social behavioral model (SBM) was developed in this study. The construction of the SBM was partly based on two popular models: technology acceptance model and theory of planned behavior. The data (n=305) were analyzed with exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and path analysis. Attitude, usefulness, and perceived risk are the most influential factors in SBM. Other variables—social identity, perceived ease of use, perceived behavioral control, perceived enjoyment, and satisfaction—affected intention indirectly. Subjective norm and image did not affect intention directly or indirectly; therefore, these two variables were dropped from the SBM. The resultant conceptual framework provides a stronger theoretical basis for understanding the behavioral aspect of social CRM implementation.

Keiji Maruoka of Kyoto University (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2009, 131, 3450) and Yujiro Hayashi of the Tokyo University of Science (Chem. Commun. 2009, 3083) independently developed organocatalysts for the enantioselective α-benzoylation of aliphatic aldehydes such as 1. The product 3 can be readily carried on to, inter alia, either enantiomer of the epoxide. Chengjian Zhu of Nanjing University designed (Adv. Synth. Cat. 2009, 351, 920) a chiral salen complex that mediated the enantioselective opening of both cyclohexene oxide (4) and cyclopentene oxide. This reagent combination might also engage just one of the two enantiomers of a racemic cycloalkene epoxide. Lin Pu of the University of Virginia established (Organic Lett. 2009, 11, 2441) a BINOL catalyst for the addition of ethyl propiolate 7 to an aliphatic aldehyde 6 to give the alcohol 8 in high ee. In a complementary approach, Do Hyun Ryu of Sungkyunkwan University found (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2009, 48, 4398) that an oxazaborolidinium salt catalyzed the addition of 7 to 9 to give 10 with high ee and high geometric control. Jianliang Xiao of the University of Liverpool devised (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2009, 131, 6967) an Ir catalyst for the enantioselective reductive amination of a ketone 11 to the amine 13 . Karl B. Hansen, Yi Hsiao. and Feng Xu, then all at Merck/Rahway, showed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2009, 131, 8798) that it was possible to hydrogenate a vinylogous primary amide 14 to the amine 15 with high enantiocontrol. Takashi Ooi of Nagoya University designed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2009, 131, 7242) a chiral P-spiro tetraaminophosphonium catalyst that mediated the enantioselective addition of anilines to nitroalkenes such as 16. The product 18 could be carried on to the 1,2-diamine, or to the α-amino acid. Masahiro Terada of Tohoku University devised (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2009, 48, 2553) a BINOL-derived phosphonic acid to catalyze the enantioselective 1,2-addition of the enamide 20 to the imine derived from 19. Yixin Lu of the National University of Singapore found (Organic Lett. 2009, 11, 1721) that a cinchona alkaloid-derived thiourea effectively catalyzed the enantioselective conjugate addition of nitroalkanes such as 22 to the acceptor 23.

Keiji Maruoka of Kyoto University developed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2012, 134, 7516) an organocatalyst for the enantioselective anti addition of 5 to 6 to give 7. Barry M. Trost of Stanford University developed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2012, 134, 2075) a Mg catalyst for the enantioselective addition of ethyl diazoacetate to an aldehyde 8, and carried the adduct onto 9. Professor Maruoka designed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 1187) for the enantioselective addition of a ketone 10 to the alkynyl ketone 11 to give 12. Naoya Kumagai and Masakatsu Shibasaki of the Institute of Microbial Chemistry found (Org. Lett. 2012, 14, 3108) that 14 could be added under very soft conditions to 13 to give the anti adduct 15. René Peters of the Universität Stuttgart added (Adv. Synth. Catal. 2012, 354, 1443) the azlactone formed in situ to 17 in a conjugate sense to give 18. Kaïss Aouadi and Jean-Pierre Praly of the Université de Lyon prepared (Tetrahedron Lett. 2012, 53, 2817) the nitrone 19 from the inexpensive (–)-menthone. Dipolar cycloaddition to a range of alkenes proceeded with substantial diastereocontrol, as illustrated for 20, which gave the crystalline adduct 21. Jeffrey S. Abstract:
Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a chronic, autoimmune disease which can affect the blood vessels, the visceral organs, and the skin. SSc, most commonly, develops between the ages of 30 and 50, but it can be seen at any age. In terms of skin involvement, SSc can be classified as limited or diffuse. Its etiopathogenesis is still unclear. Microvascular dysfunction is thought to be followed by immunological activation, collagen and extracellular matrix deposition, and finally fibrosis. Diagnosis is based on clinical presentation. Sclerosis of the metacarpophalangeal and/or metatarsophalangeal joints is the major diagnostic criterion, whereas sclerodactylia, digital ulcers (DU), and pulmonary fibrosis are the minor criteria. SSc is diagnosed with one major criterion or two minor criteria. Detection of autoantibodies can help the diagnosis. Antinuclear antibody (ANA), anti-centromere antibody, anti-scl 70, RNA polymerase 1 and 3, and anti-fibrillin antibody can be found positive in SSc. SSc must be differentiated from all sclerosing diseases and the diseases with Raynaud’s phenomenon. Visceral diseases, such as primary pulmonary hypertension, primary biliary cirrhosis, and infiltrative cardiomyopathy, should also be considered in its differential diagnosis. The main treatment goal is to target visceral involvement.

Abstract:
The effect of sintering atmosphere on densification of Al–SiC compacts was investigated. Dimensional changes were monitored in situ in a dilatometer in flowing nitrogen, nitrogen/hydrogen mixture (95/5 by volume), and argon. Two grades of SiC powder were used—F240 characterized by large particles and FCN13 with very fine particles. Mixtures containing 10 and 30 vol.% of SiC reinforcement were prepared in a Turbula mixer. Green compacts of about 80% of theoretical density were made of each mixture. For comparison, compacts made of pure aluminum powder were also investigated. It was shown that nitrogen is the only sintering atmosphere producing shrinkage. This ceramic constituent lowers the sintering densification. Metallographic examinations of sintered composites revealed that sintering of compacts occurs in the presence of a liquid phase exclusively in nitrogen. The melt appearing in Al–SiC compacts is capable to wet the solid phases, which makes shrinkage possible and is beneficial for metal/ceramic bond formation.

Abstract:
Magnesium alloy parts have the merits of low specific gravity, high specific strength, electromagnetic wave-proof shelter, and recyclability; therefore, it has been extensively applied to 3C and car industries. However, the processing and forming of magnesium is quite difficult to control due to magnesium’s hexagonal close-packed (HCP) structure, making the slipping face of itself less than the FCC material. Currently, common processing methods of magnesium alloys are die casting, semi-solid forming, and plastic forming. In the employment of a fixed-speed method for extrusion, the extruded sheet had serious defects in the forms of cracks on the surface. Hence, in this research, AZ31 magnesium alloy sheet metals were processed by hot extrusion using a variable speed method. The formability of AZ31 sheets under converging dies was investigated. Three converging dies with semi die angle of 20°, 30°, and 40° were used. Experiments were conducted and analyzed utilizing the Taguchi method. L9 orthogonal array was used to design the experiments under extrusion ratio of 35.9. Four important process parameters considered in this research are the heating temperature of the billet (320°C, 340°C and 360°C), the temperature of the container (300°C, 350°C and 400°C), the initial speed of extrusion (2mm/sec, 3mm/sec and 4mm/sec), and the lubricants (boron nitride, molybdenum disulphide and graphite) applied in the extrusion. The influences of these parameters to the extrusion load and the resulting mechanical properties were investigated. Moreover, the microstructure of the extruded sheets was observed to provide better insight of the formability. As a result, the optimal combinations of the process parameters were determined for the maximum tensile strength.

Abstract:
Performance evaluations of rocket engine turbopump drive turbines are difficult to obtain from turbopump or engine firings due to measurement limitations and operating point restrictions. The Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) Turbine Test Equipment (TTE) was developed to provide an accurate, economical method of measuring the performance of full-scale turbopump gas turbines. By expanding air at pressures as high as 435 psia (3.0 MPa) to atmospheric conditions, the TTE provides metered air at nominal conditions of 100 psia (0.69 MPa), 550 °R (350 °K), and 15 lbm/sec (6.8 kg/sec) with run times of 100 seconds or greater. A 600 hp (448 kW) direct current dynamometer and gearbox provide turbine power absorption for speeds up to 14,000 rpm. This paper describes the MSFC TTE and its performance including the performance envelope, turbine inlet flow quality, and measurement uncertainty.

Abstract:
Irradiation Assisted Stress Corrosion Cracking (IASCC) is a matter of great concern as degradation of core internal components in light water nuclear reactor. To clarify the IASCC initiation conditions of baffle former bolt (BFB), constant load stress corrosion cracking (SCC) tests were carried out in simulated PWR primary water (290, 320, 340°C) using C-ring type specimens. Based on the SCC test results, IASCC initiation time becomes shorter with increasing fluence and increasing applied stress, IASCC initiation threshold stress becomes lower with increasing fluence. A test temperature effect was observed in SCC initiation time, but it was not clear the effect of test temperature for SCC initiation threshold stress. These results suggest that IASCC initiation threshold criteria can be described with stress in specimen and fluence. This paper describes the whole evaluation procedure to secure structural integrity of irradiated baffle structure in PWR primary environments, including the threshold stress diagram of IASCC initiation and the irradiation creep formula.

California experienced a 300% increase in loss of propulsion (LOP) incidents since its distillate fuel regulation came into effect in 2009. The compression ignition (Diesel) engines aboard modern cargo ships over 10,000 gross tons use 3.0% sulfur Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO). This fuel must be heated to flow through the fuel lines because at normal ambient temperature HFO has the consistency of tar. Distillate fuel in contrast does not require the high temperatures, and the thermodynamics of cooling metal, gaskets and seals resulted in leaks, along with filter clogging from engine buildup scrubbing. In addition, the cost savings of using HFO are significant over the use of distillate fuel which is typically around US$300 more per ton.

Full text
Abstract:
Metallic residues are distributed heterogeneously onto small-arms range soils from projectile fragmentation upon impact with a target or berm backstop. Incremental Sampling Methodology (ISM) can address the spatially heterogeneous contamination of surface soils on small-arms ranges, but representative kilogram-sized ISM subsamples are affected by the range of metallic residue particle sizes in the sample. This study compares the precision and concentrations of metals in a small-arms range soil sample processed by a puck mill, ring and puck mill, ball mill, and mortar and pestle prior to analysis. The ball mill, puck mill, and puck and ring mill produced acceptable relative standard deviations of less than 15% for the anthropogenic metals of interest (Lead (Pb), Antimony (Sb), Copper (Cu), and Zinc (Zn)), with the ball mill exhibiting the greatest precision for Pb, Cu, and Zn. Precision by mortar and pestle, without milling, was considerably higher (40% to >100%) for anthropogenic metals. Media anthropogenic metal concentrations varied by more than 40% between milling methods, with the greatest concentrations produced by the puck mill, followed by the puck and ring mill and then the ball mill. Metal concentrations were also dependent on milling time, with concentrations stabilizing for the puck mill by 300 s but still increasing for the ball mill over 20 h. Differences in metal concentrations were not directly related to the surface area of the milled sample. Overall, the tested milling methods were successful in producing reproducible data for soils containing metallic residues. However, the effects of milling type and time on concentrations require consideration in environmental investigations.
