Abstract:
The landmark paper discussed in this chapter is a systematic review assessing the commonly used faces pain scales employed to aid children in the self-report of their pain intensity. The review provides a critical evaluation of the Faces Pain Scale, the Faces Pain Scale-Revised (FPS-R), the Oucher pain scale, and the Wong–Baker Faces Pain Rating Scale (WBFPRS). The reviewers found that the psychometric properties of the FPS-R supported its superiority for use in research. Although they found that children, and many staff, expressed a preference for the WBFPRS, the reviewers had major concerns

Abstract:
In theory construct validation secures good measurement by balancing all available evidence. But does it do so in practice? This chapter argues that validation of well-being scales as currently practiced is unduly selective about what evidence counts. It is not enough to check whether a measure correlates with other measures and indicators that background theory deems relevant if this background theory does not include normative and conceptual considerations about the nature of well-being. In this sense psychometrics commits theory avoidance. Its root is a disciplinary convention of evidential

Abstract:
Over the past few decades, there has been a revolution in the approach to scale development. Called item response theory (IRT), this approach challenges the notion that scales must be long in order to be reliable, and that psychometric properties of a scale derived from one group of people cannot be applied to different groups. This chapter provides an introduction to IRT, and discusses how it can be used to develop scales and to shorten existing scales that have been developed using the more traditional approach of classical test theory. IRT also can result in scales that have interval-level

Abstract:
This chapter begins by introducing the readers to finding existing scales that may meet their needs. It briefly summarizes the key concepts they should look for in a scale—reliability, validity, and feasibility. It discusses what is meant by these various terms and how they are measured. The chapter also contrasts the categorical versus the dimensional approaches to diagnosis and classification. Finally, it compares the medical versus the psychometric ways of trying to reduce measurement error.

Abstract:
Journals are becoming increasingly more stringent in their requirements for what must be reported in articles about the psychometric properties of scales. This chapter reviews three of the most commonly used guidelines; the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing, the STARD initiative (Standards for Reporting of Diagnostic Accuracy), and the Guidelines for Reporting Reliability and Agreement Studies (GRRAS). It abstracts portions of these guidelines that are most relevant for scales used in research settings. These cover the reporting of test development, reliability, and validity.
