Comparative morphology of the cement delivery apparatus of three lepadomorph barnacles indicates that the lepadid Lepas anatifera is unable to relocate voluntarily, whereas the two scalpellids Pollicipes pollicipes and Capitulum mitella can. Mean relocation speeds of up to 50 μm d−1 were measured for both scalpellids, which are probably underestimates of maximal rates given the absence of a directed stimulus. Our ability to reconstruct the evolutionary history of deep-water scalpellid barnacles (Crustacea: Cirripedia: Scalpellidae) and to understand their geographical distributions and ecology, is limited by the lack of a robust classification system. Records of cirriped species in the family Scalpellidae from the Nordic Seas are scarce. New records of the four species Amigdoscalpellum hispidum (G. O. Sars, 1890), Ornatoscalpellum stroemi (M. Sars, 1859) Tarasovium cornutum (G.O. Sars, 1879) and Weltnerium nymphocola (Hoek, 1883) from the eastern part of the Norwegian Sea are reported. A number of stylasterid corals are known to act as host species and create refuges for a variety of mobile and sessile organisms, which enhances their habitat complexity.
