Abstract:
This chapter considers whether long-run resource scarcity limits economic growth. It distinguishes between renewable and non-renewable resources, as types of natural capital. Using the example of oil, it shows that the depletion of non-renewables is not a binding constraint. It critiques the peak oil concept, and, in particular, notes that it fails to take account of either technical progress or the impact of prices in allocating resources. On renewables there are serious depletion concerns; the chapter advances the aggregate natural capital rule, and sets out how this provides a rigorous asse

Resources have been essential inputs in the world economy and at the epicenter of technological developments. There are different theories of resource scarcity, but uninterrupted access to resources is vital to modern economies, especially since modern technological applications demand resource inputs from across the globe. Physical depletion and flow disruption, therefore, both pose a series of challenges for policymakers and industry. The examination of China’s use of economic statecraft in the case of the rare-earth crisis and the corresponding response of the European Union, the United Sta

Abstract:
This chapter demonstrates the viability of a new theory for the role of religion in violence by applying it to cases ranging from the ancient to the modern world, and in the three Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Islam, and Christianity). It also describes how scarce resource theory can help elaborate religious violence. Moreover, the chapter reports how religion produces scarce resources, and then concentrates on: 1) access to the divine will, particularly through inscripturation, 2) sacred space, 3) group privileging, and 4) salvation. It is noted that religion is not the cause of all violence.

Abstract:
With knowledge from our deserts, Australians can reshape the human story. Dry Times: Blueprint for a Red Land provides new insights into how our desert environments and institutions work – and how this affects the people living in them, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal alike.
It shows that the desert offers solutions to the challenges of living in an uncertain and threatening age, teaching us new ways to live, manage scarce resources, and cope with climatic extremes, isolation and lack of water and energy. These lessons apply not only to remote regions, but also to cities and entire nation

Abstract:
“Resource wars” refer to the linkages between armed conflict and access to natural resources.Geographically, these wars are frequently represented through world maps of “strategic resources,” combining the physical scarcity and non-substitutability of resources with their uneven spatial distribution and relative geopolitical location to pinpoint “hot-spots.” Yet perspectives on the links between war and resources are much broader than the continuation of resource policies through the use of military force. Similarly, the geographical dimensions of, and geographical perspectives on, these links

Abstract:
This volume combines economics and ecology in a penetrating examination of the natural resources and environmental issues arising from economic growth, development, and change. The author focuses particular attention on the environmental consequences of economic change and argues that the management and conservation of biological resources is a requirement for sustainable economic growth. By setting traditional economic issues within their wider environmental context and covering issues not ordinarily addressed by economists, Tisdell offers an important new perspective on the problem of resour
