Abstract:
Introduction Cutaneous scars represent a common surgical complication, yet no effective drug therapy for scar treatment currently exists despite huge patient and physician demand. A connexin 43 (Cx43) carboxyl terminus (CT) mimetic peptide, alpha Connexin Carboxy-Terminus 1 (αCT1), has demonstrated efficacy in improving long-term scar appearance in pre-clinical and clinical trials. However, current understanding of the mechanism-of-action by which αCT1 improves long-term scar appearance with early intervention treatment is not well understood. Unlike other regenerative organs such as the liver, the adult mammalian heart does not regenerate tissue lost following injury such as myocardial infarction (MI). Instead a non-contractile fibrous scar develops that in the longer term leads to the development of heart failure (HF). In contrast to the adult, neonatal mammals, including mice and man, retain potent cardiac regenerative capacities and can replace myocardium lost following injury. Understanding the mechanisms underlying scar free repair in the neonate may help in development of new approaches to reduce the impact of myocardial inju

This suggested a path of investigation within a song cycle for solo baritone and 17 musicians, where a musical space is extended beyond an imagined 'popular' world, through the creation of 'models' – based upon my own popular-music inspired songs – which are then set into 'perspective' through various combinations and transforma

Anaplastic Lymphoma Kinase (ALK) is a Receptor Tyrosine Kinase (RTK) and an oncogene associated with several human diseases, but its normal function in humans and other vertebrates is unclear. Drosophila melanogaster has an ALK homolog, demonstrating that the RTK has been conserved throughout evolution. This makes Drosophila a suitable model organism for studying not only Drosophila ALK function, but also to study mammalian forms of ALK. In Drosophila the ligand Jeb activates ALK, initiating signaling crucial for visceral mesoderm development. The activating ligand for mammalian ALK is unclear

We thus examined the expression and localization of several key components of the TGFβ/activin signaling pathway during tail regeneration of the leopard gecko.
